Video editing problem in PS CC 2014
I'm editing a video in PS CC 2014. When I hit the play button to review my clips, it just jumps to the end of the timeline. I have "Enable Timeline shortcut keys" checked, and if I hit the space bar it does the same thing. Never had this happen in the previous version.

In your third example, one needs to have a "Real" background layer.
That can be done by going to Layer>New>Background from Layer.
(a photoshop document can only have one background layer)

Video Editing Problems. URGENT
I bought a $600 Sony Handycam HDD yesterday. I need to edit the footage I shot with it today by no later than tomorrow night. I can hook up the digital camcorder to my laptop, but then when I try to import the clips into iMovie HD it wont work. Quicktime wont even play the files when I drag them onto my desktop. I am utterly confused and frustrated. Please someone help me out with this one. Should I just call Apple support or what?
I understand these computers to be Video, Music, and Picture editing computers. It is so very frustrating to have a problem as simple as this with a machine that was designed for this very thing.

1) Buy the Quicktime MPEG-2 component from the Apple Store. This will allow you to play the video in Quicktime and then allow you to convert it to a DV stream.
2) Download MPEG StreamClip…

3) Once you have your video in DV stream format you can import it into iMovie. -
Hello. I am new to imovie. i have version 5.0.2.
Imovie help says: To trim a video clip using direct trimming: Select the clip you want to edit in the timeline viewer. Position the pointer over the end of the clip until you see the pointer change. Drag the end of the clip to remove the frames that you want trimmed.
I can't get the pointer to change. It will not allow me to edit in the timeline. Am i missing something? Any input would be greatly appreciated. This is driving me nuts.

Some of the little quirks of imovie are the hardest to figure out.
But, if you can get it to work once, you'll never have another problem!
Place the playhead at the end of the clip and a little "+" sign will show up. Click and drag. As soon as you clic, it will change.

Imovie 9 green screen -- audio and video editing problems
I seem to have discovered that once you add a video (the "front" part) to a background using green screen, you can no longer do certain edits on the front part's audio or video.
I tried to do a manual audio fade on a certain clip, and it didn't work. Now I am trying to bring the entire audio for a certain clip down to zero, and even though the little speaker icon shows no sound waves, normal 100% sound is coming from the clip.
Likewise with the video. I tried to do a Split Clip on the front part and it simply didn't work.
Anybody have some words of wisdom? Thanks.Thanks for the suggestion Brad, that makes sense... However, I was hoping there was a "straight" iMovie solution.
I'd prefer to not have to 1) spend any money and 2) use a program to do something iMovie is already supposed to do. -
Have purchased a new computer but can not install elements 12 since it has been installed on an older laptop. This is a one time user program, is there a code that can be put in or a small fee to pay to be able to use the program again. Never installed the video editing and hoping this can be installed with no problem.
If the laptop is still connected Launch Elements in Expert Mode. Go to the help menu and sign-out. That will deactivate usage on the laptop.

Best video editing software available 2014 for iMac
Need suggestions for best video editing software available Nov 2014 for iMac.
If by best you mean the most editing tools and effects available, and used by most professional video studios, that would be either the Adobe Premiere Pro suite, or Avid. Neither of which is cheap. Final Cut Studio used to have a pretty generous share of that professional market, but FCP X was such a radical change to the app (not to mention not even being able to open standing FCS projects with it), many former FCS users switched to Adobe or Avid.
For inexpensive and still a lot of power, FCP X is a steal. -
Hi everyone! I downloaded CS6 for a graphic design class that I was taking. I later found out that you could edit videos with the essentials portion of CS6 since it no longer has to be extended like in CS5. I went to import some videos from bridge and bridge would not allow me to do so. I also tried to open the files in Photoshop and I as I was looking at the type of files that I could open like quicktime files, wmv., mov., etc., I could not find anything relating to opening videos. The only thing that showed up were types of image files to open. Did I buy a faulty version of this program? Is there a way to get the video editing feature back on here or do I have to breakdown and buy Photoshop essentials separately?

Edit in Adobe Photoshop CC 2014
When in Lightroom 5 and I select "edit in Adobe Photoshop CC 2014" it doesn't create a copy in tif or psd format (or jpg format) like it did in previous versions. A box use to pop up allowing me to set the file type, color space etc then in Lightroom I would get a second file (filename-edit.xxx) and photoshop would open that file for editing. I am very use to this workflow from my previous versions of LR 4 and cs3... Any help is appreciated!
By the time the image is open in Photoshop is no longer raw image data. You are not working on the raw file in Photoshop. The only difference in your workflow is when that TIF file is saved. Since Lightroom and Photoshop are in sync the saving of that secondary file is postponed until the end of the Photoshop session. But any work you do in Photoshop is saved to the TIF file. The only difference is the point at which the file is saved. So you really don't have to change your workflow at all. Photoshop, by itself, cannot do anything with the raw image data.
To expand a little further, Photoshop cannot edit raw image data. When an image is sent from Lightroom to Photoshop, Camera Raw is used to interpret the adjustments that have been made in Lightroom. The image is then converted to a standard RGB image. When Photoshop and Lightroom are "in sync" that converted image is sort of "suspended" in Photoshop. You make the adjustments using Photoshop, and then the image is saved to a TIF or PSD file depending on your Lightroom preferences. When Lightroom is newer than Photoshop/Camera Raw then Lightroom will give you the choice of creating the TIF image that includes all of the Lightroom adjustments, or to open the image in Photoshop. If you choose the latter, then the image will be opened without creating the TIF, but all of the adjustments you made in Lightroom may not be applied because you are using an older Camera Raw. That may or may not create a problem. Something that you will have to decide. -
MacBook Pro 15" video card problems (i think)

This is what happened:
I use my mbp heavily because I edit a lot of videos with Premiere. I also use lightroom / photoshop alot + games. I also installed Parallels desktop late 2013. I don't know if that is relevant but anyway. Everything started late 2013 (a little after installing parallels actually) when there are moments when the audio wouldn't work and I couldn't adjust the volume. It would come back anyway so i didn't mind it. Then the fans were on high speed for little activity. After that the keyboard backlight couldn't be adjusted and wouldnt work. I ignored all of these cuz i wasn't troubling me at the time. In January i left for france to study - I use bike all the time and once stupidly placed my laptop on the basket going to school (rough roads). I had a class with html so I had to open Parallels, my teacher pointed out the fans and how loud they were. That day, parallels desktop said i must upgrade to windows 9 or it will restart every 2hours. I didn't of course. I didn't have time to.
After that (a few days later i think) my laptop would randomly turn into a black screen but it's still on (the power LED is on) I tried turning it off by pressing down the power button and then turning it back on. It worked the first time. During the first week, the frequency of it happening grew. It would do it almost 3 times a day. during that same week I tried to do an SMC reset. It fixed the keyboard light, fans and audio but not the black screen thing. It just keeps on happening around 1-3 times a day. It only happens when I'm using it btw, never when I just leave it. ALSO, after a few days, it would take longer hours to open my mbp again. I mean, the screen would turn black. i would turn it off, then on again. I will ONLY hear the hard drive moving but no startup sound and no grey screen and apple logo. nothing.
The following weeks after that, I asked a friend to help me out. He suggested that I install gfxCardStatus because he said it might be my video card. He instructed that I keep it on intergrated only. So I installed that and did what he said I thought it worked for a while because the black screens stopped happening (even when gfx keeps on going back to dynamic) BUT NOW, MY LAPTOP WOULD FREEZE (not turn black). I'd shut it down using the power button but it still takes me hours to open it again. Sometimes, I'd wait for the battery to drain because it would startup when i charge it (sometimes)
I tried doing AHT as well to confirm the video card problem, but the results are no problems found. I really don't want to replace my logicboard here in france. everything is more expensive here. ;__;
Today I uninstalled parallels to see if that might have had anything to do with my problem now but i think that's just wishful thinking.

Storage options for video editing
For video editing is it better to use an external drive as the scratch disc or use an internal (non-bootable) drive. I keep getting conflicting information. I would like to get an additional 500gb for my system (Mac Pro G5)but don't know what direction to go. Any advice/opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Well it all depends. Certainly, there's many good reasons to install a second internal drive. But I think it's better to use this as a "clone" of your startup drive. When I have a stable OS and application combo, I clone my startup drive to the second internal drive using carbon copy cloner (available at versiontracker.com). After cloning, I always try starting up from the clone to make sure everything's working. Then I can do a software update, install additional apps, and if my system goes south either from updates or some sort of corruption, I can quickly restart from the second internal drive and get back to work.
I've installed a sata card and bought a 5 bay sata enclosure from macgurus. Trays are about $ 25.00 and drives keep getting cheaper. I can quickly swap out drives and you can also stripe the drives if you need faster thru put.
I used to have as many as 11 firewire drives chained to my g5 and it worked great for years. But then things went seriously south and it took many months of troubleshooting to figure out the problem. It seemed like different brands of firewire drives did not play nicely together. I've been working with the sata enclosure for 2 1/2 years without any problems. -
Suggestions for setting up external storage for video editing please?
I am just starting up as a one-man video-editing business, using a 24 inch iMac running Snow Leopard, with Final Cut Studio. I have realised I'll need an external hard drive for HD footage, and I also need to get some back-up solution in place. Looking for speedy i/o, I would like to connect via the ethernet port (if only eSata was included in the iMac, eh!)
I've been planning to get a Drobo, but looking around the forums I see that people say it's too slow for using as a working drive to keep all my source footage, so I've been looking at the G-tech 4 Tb, as it says it is designed for media-content production. Does anyone know if I could use two of the drives for working from and two as back up? Or would it be better to keep back-up entirely seperate, and get a Drobo for that for the G-tech to back up to?
But I am also wondering whether a Mac Mini could be a worthwhile addition to this set up? I find myself sitting around waiting for rendering to complete on clips in my timeline (not to mention exporting to Quicktime conversion!), and I wondered if I put a Mac mini with Xserve installed (Apple store offers this with two 500gb hard drives inside), maybe I could farm the rendering out to the mini while I get on with editing on my iMac? That would require two installations of FCP, which I thought was allowed, but just today in a forum I saw that one would have to be a laptop... anyone have any suggestions for getting rendering done without stopping FCP from doing other things simultaneously?
Also I don't know if that arrangement is even feasible... I see all these things like Xsan and Artbox... as a one workstation editing suite, does FCP handle all the dataflows for external working drive and external back ups okay without having to introduce more controllers?
And can anyone explain to me how I could set up an ethernet connection to an external hard drive, or does that require the extra controllers mentioned above? I've seen it said that you can do it via ethernet, but haven't seen how you can actually go about doing it.

IMO i'd avoid drobo like the plague. G tech drives have served me incredibly well working on a huge variety of broadcast projects (just over the water from you in Bristol), I've had no probs with FW800 when using DVCproHD, pro res is ok, sometimes a little slow with multiple layers and of course it eats up storage space. so I'd go for 2 4tb drives, keep the backup one in a different location.
one tip that has saved me countless times is to format them as follows:-
mac os extended (not journalled)
create 2 partitions
partition 1 - make this small (1gig) and call it "drive a - do not use"
partition 2 - the rest of available storage and call "drive a"
this is because the boot sector of the drive is within the first partition and with this method if it goes down it can be re erased without losing all your footage.
If you call your backup drive the exact same name and have the exact same folder structure, you will not have to relink if you get a problem.
Ignore getting a mac mini for rendering, won't help at all in FCP. instead I would make every attempt you can at buying a mac pro rather than an imac. much more expansion/speed possibilities and a more robust solution.

Just received delivery of a Lenovo G550 with the following spec:
2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo,
4GB (DDR3 - 1066Hz) RAM,
500GB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce G210M (512MB)
Windows 7
The entire purpose for buying this laptop, was for video editing and it is the best spec I could find for my needs and budget.
So what's the problem?
1) Windows 7 is installed as 32-bit, not 64 bit. Why is this? I was given no choice in this decision.
2) Only 2.96GB of that juicey RAM is being used by Windows 7. I need as much RAM as possible for video editing.
3) Lenovo sent NO install disc. - When I eventually get a virus or my HDD fails, I have NO WAY to clean install the very product I have just purchased! (A laptop with Windows 7 OS).
Considerations:
As I understand it (please comment if there are alternative views on this); The 64-bit architecture is only useful for compatible software which has been designed to run 64-bit.
The video editing software I use is "Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 9.0"
The suggested problems with Windows 7 run as 64-bit include:
* Possible lack of driver compatibility support.
* Possibility of 32-bit programs running SLOWER in 64-bit environment, than their native 32-bit environment.
* Higher running temperatures & processor cooling issues.
* No performance gains for all other programs running as 32-bit (email, internet browser, etc).
The suggested advantages with Windows 7 run as 64-bit could be:
* Full utilisation of the 4GB RAM. (Presently limited to 2.96GB)
* Faster rendering and video editing tasks in 64-bit environment.
Questions:
4) How can I get an install disc for Windows 7? Shouldn't this come with the computer?
5) Do you think the potential hassle and architecture conflicts are worth suffering, to get the reported performance gains of 64-bit architecture and the remaining unused RAM?

most of people are having trouble with installing windows and drivers, so companies has found as this as solution to send recovery dvd -if asked- or using hidden partition to recovery system - like one key recover - instead of.
but if you ask me, they need to send dvds.

Multiple Hard Drives for Video Editing with Premiere Elements 8?
I'm using Premiere Elements 8 for video editing. These are the specs I'm using:
The camcorder I used to shoot the footage is a Sony Handycam with model number HDR-SR12. It's a digital HD video camera recorder that shoots in NTSC 1920x1080i HD recording. The footage was shot with AVC HD 9M (HQ), which records in higher image quality mode. The video camera is connected to my computer through a USB cable.
The computer itself is a Windows 7 desktop computer. The CPU is an HP Pavilion Elite HPE-150f PC with Intel Core i7-860 processor. I imported the video into Premiere by selecting "File" --> "Get Media From" and then choosing the third option from the top.
My import option is NTSC/AVCHD/Full HD 1080i 30 5.1 channel, which matches the specs of the camera I shot the footage with.
Even with the patch 8.0.1 that should be preventing crashing, the program keeps crashing upon startup with one specific video project. Using the exact same video files for that project, I recreated the video, with Elements, and never ran into the problem. Both times, I had the patch installed.
At the moment, I am using only the single internal hard drive for everything (software, OS, video editing, etc.). It is 1 TB in size. However, I am informed that one hard drive is not recommended for video editing, and that I need at least two hard drives, one for OS and one specifically for video editing. I was also informed of FireWire 800 and eSata; however, it does not appear that my computer supports eSata.
Can this problem be resolved if I have an external hard drive and connect it to my computer with FireWire 800 (which the computer supports)? If not, what can be done so this problem doesn't arise in the future?

When you import the footage is there a red line across the whole of the timeline?

As you have the recreated project working fine I'd be inclined to put this down as a one-off glitch. If it happens again on a different project then it may be more worrying. You may want to consider using save-as to create multiple versions of your project (note this does NOT duplicate the source clips - so you won't be eating up much extra disk space). You could for example use save-as to create a daily version - ProjectName-Mon, ProjectName-Tue etc....

I'm running Lr 5.6 and just updated to Ps 2014.2.1 on a Mac and now when I click edit in Adobe Photoshop CC 2014 Ps opens but with and empty window. I see on the internet that many other people had this issue when they went to Ps CC 2014 and Adobe says to update to Ps 2014.1 to fix it but I'm past that and having the same problem. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Ps but no change. Lr in creative cloud says uninstall unavailable.... Please help!!!
