Video Effects Die Out

Hey,
Near the end of a video I'm making, the video effects I'm using just gradually stop. I'm using Edge Work and Flase Color, the video is 1:47 long, and the effects start dieing at 1:36 or so. Does anybody know why? Thanks!

.. so how do I check the format?..
YOU did select the 'format' of your project in the 'Create New Project' dialog...
.. I'm not sure which harddrive it's on..
.. if you don't know.. me no psychic ... same: when creating New Project, you did choose a location.. somewhere ... somehow ..
.. I do have an external one connected... ..
.. and you're using it as 'out-of-the-box'? ...- which is usually wrong formatted ... follow advice given here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh1009.html
to use iM in its all shining glory, use it as a DV-editor, meaning: iMovie is by concept for working with firewire connected miniDV camcorders...
as long as you use iM as meant, no computer skills needed, if you try to teach the dog new tricks - you need some background know-how..
here's a good start for beginners:

  • Is it possible to set IN/OUT points for video effects within a single clip in PE4?

    Hello,
In PE4, Is it possible to use keyframes to simply turn certain video effects on/off at different points within a single clip ?
Some effects (i.e. Invert)have a Blend With Original setting which makes this easy to achieve, but others (i.e. Ripple)do not.
I understand how to use keyframes to adjust effect properties at different points within a clip, I just can't find a way to simply 'turn-off' or bypass an effect for a period of time.
    Thanks All, CB

    Chris,
As Steve points out, most Effects are OFF, by default (usually setting their parameters to 0). I just add a Keyframe for that Effect, with those properties, where you want the Effect to be OFF (but check that each Effect that you use starts as OFF, just to be sure). Then, in between the OFF settings, I add Keyframes with the desired parameters to invoke that particular Effect.
One can also use the Razor/Sissors to cut the Clip into segments (just do not move them) to keep the Keyframes in one area of the original Clip. I usually work on the entire Clip, as once the Keyframe is set to OFF for that Effect, no more Keyframes are needed.
Some Effects also have a Bypass setting, that can be Keyframed (in P Pro, and assume in PE). This can be handy to fully turn OFF any Effect. Note: even in P Pro, not all Effects have a Bypass setting.
As usual with PE (and P-Pro and PS), there can be a couple of ways to accomplish the same thing. One can choose the method that suits them best.
    Good luck,

  • Premiere Elements 7: track matte key video effect does not work?

I want to use the track matte key video effect to fade out some cropped video clips. So I did a test:
    first track: video clip
second track: PNG file, black with white circle
third track: video clip with FX with second track (here: Video 5) and luminance
As you can see in the picture the small preview pic above the effects shows the effect like I expected: a circle with the content of the third, lowest, clip. But the large video preview shows the first clip.
    What did I do wrong?
I tested other settings and track orders. No efforts.

Bill, thanks again for your help! Good tutorial. That's what I need in principle! My try was a bit more complicated ...
But I can't help. The white area stays (see screenshot top left corner). Only some of the small blurred area around the shape shines through as I could see playing around without blurring the video clip.
    I used:
title with white (it is 100% white) shape and blur effect above
video clip with track matte effect and matte alpha on the title track, reversed (blur effect on whole clip like in the tutorial)
Rendering and export does not change anything.
    I'm feeling a bit stupid.

  • What are the video effects used in this video

I was just wondering if anybody could help me. I was intrigued to find out what kind of video effect is used in this video at 0:16 - 0:18 and if theres a name for this type of video and editing used throughout the video such as the continous stream of different videos etc.

Do you mean the distorted lips or the bad tv reception.
The distorted lips can be anything from Bulge to Mesh Warp to Liquefy.
The bad TV reception can be started with the Bad TV Effects Presets that comes with AE. You can modify or edit these as you like.
I know of no specific style name that goes along with any part of this video other than lazy. It looks like nobody had an idea of what they wanted to do so they just shot a bunch of stuff and threw every effect they had in their bag of tricks at the project. Turn off the sound and it's impossible to tell what it is about. I don't mean to be critical but there's not much original here that I haven't seen a zillion times going back to the Video Toaster days. (probably before you were born). It's nothing more than a bunch of quick cuts and jitter.
Load up about 100 layers, trim them do different lengths from 5 to 30 frames, Select half of them, apply Bad TV1 to that bunch, Apply Bad TV2 to the another 10 random layers. Add tint, bulge, to a few more. set a couple of position and rotate keyframes to a few more then add wiggle to those, then use the Keyframe Assistant to sequence the layers and you'll be pretty close. It should take you about 15 minutes.
If you've got a specific question about how they made this jitter or how they made time stutter ask away. If used to tell a story these techniques are all useful. If you just want to create a jarring montage then follow my suggestion in the previous paragraph then run Brainstorm a couple of times.

  • Help with adding video effects.

Okay, so I am very new with Adobe Premiere Pro CS3, and decided to start working with video effects.
So far I can add an effect onto a video clip that I dragged down from the source monitor, but that applies the effect to the whole video track. I want it to start and end at a certain point.
I have read the Adobe Help Viewer on effects many times over and over, but still, I cannot get it to work.
I have set in and out put points in my Timeline, and went into the effects controls and peaked around, but have had no success at all with getting my effect to start and end at a certain point.
Can anyone help me out a little bit? I'm sure you are all Pro's at this, haha.

You will also find links to many

  • Which video effects for vhs lp mode?

a single vhs tape containing six hours of video is captured to mpg format. as you can imagine, the quality is lower than one might like. studying every video effect offered by pp4 would take me a lifetime. can you suggest a few effects i might look at for improving the quality of this low quality video?
    --david (neophyte pp4 user)

Craig's right though, I know it's a pain and will take a lot more HD space, but if you can capture as DV, make your changes, and then export to mpg the results will be much better. I made DVD's of three old VHS tapes that were multi-generation copies and decades old. They were concert videos shot from the audience with VHS, and they had faded out terribly over the years. I mostly just did some sharpening and adjusted the color, gamma, light, and contrast. I also deinterlaced with TMPGEnc while doing the mpg conversion. They all came out quite a bit better. The bigger challenge was restoring the sound.

  • Video effects for a horror/thriller trailer

I'm working on recutting a trailer as a different genre and I was wondering how to do a couple of effects.  How do you do the white flash on the screen(not a dip to white transition but in the middle of the clip) and the flash that shows a negative of the original image like you see in some horror/thriller trailers?

    Hi owiseone,
Here's how I would construct the effect.
    Create the "negative image" effect.
Apply the Invert effect: Video Effects > Channel > Invert
Try different Channel Options. I chose "Lightness."
Desaturate the colors on the negative image.
    Apply a Fast Color Corrector
    Take Saturation down to 0.
Adjust the Input Levels slider to taste
Make the effect flash on and off with the original clip by using the Strobe effect, or by manually adding the effect to Add Edits.
    First, do the following
Copy paste the clip to V2.
Remove effects from the clip on V1.
Do either of the following to the clip on V2:
Apply the Strobe Light effect: Video Effects > Stylize > Strobe Light and adjust parameters to taste.
With the Razor tool or the Add Edit keyboard shortcut, create splices that are several frames long, create them either the same length, or random durations. Delete portions of the clip between the add edits.
Play back the effect and adjust parameters until you're happy with the effect.
Set up a range to play In to Out
    Enable Loop Playback
Adjust parameters in any of the effects as they play In to Out.
    Hope that helps!
    Kevin

  • Use of video effects

I wonder if there's a novice out there like me who has tried to edit effects for an old VHS and found some short cuts?  eg. I have an video that's only about 20 years old but because it was taken inside at night it's quite dark and grainy, not to mention the movement from the amateur photographer?
Instead of playing around with controls like brightness, saturation etc which seems endless, are there any quick tips out there?
    thanks,

As Bill points out, video from a old VHS source would be difficult to enhance as it would kick the grains high and the output might start looking more shabby.
What I would do here is that - (after enhancing the clip to whatever extent you can) Import these clips in a bigger project setting and then Scale these clips down and place them in the center to create a picture in picture kind of effect. With the backgroud being the same clip scaled up to fit the entire screen, but may be with Black and white effect applied and with a good amount of blur applied, so that the background movie does not disturb the foregroud clip.
This trick helps solve a couple of things if nicely done.
    1) The old VHS footages are usually of smaller dimension and nowadays the playback monitors are usually HD ones - Creating a Picture in Picture (Video in Video) effect helps showing up the VHS footage in a smaller window and it atleast gives a feel that the video quality has improved a bit.
    2) Having the same clip, blurred and with some effects, gives a feel that the entire screen is filled with relevant content.
Do try with a small portion of your footage and check if this helps.

  • Cannot drop pictures into video effects window (not the usual problem)

    Hi there,
I cannot drop jpgs into the video effects window. I checked http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5700460&#5700460 and http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7384222&#7384222 and they got me going, but my issue is slightly different.
The plus sign appears when I click and drag the picture out of finder and into one of the open windows in video effects user backdrop window. When I release the mouse button, nothing is dragged to the location. I have tried different picture locations, moved them to the desktop first, and different picture locations, but no luck.
Any ideas? I’ll run disk perms in the meantime in case it is something goofy, but if anyone has any ideas I’d be grateful. Just got my first Mac two days ago and love it so far

    Hi,
Did the Pic file come from another computer ?
    Manually navigate to the Pic.
Highlight it and do a "Get Info" (Apple Key and I together)
DO you Own it and have Read and Write Access (near the bottom when you expand the various tabs).
Make sure you are the Owner and have Read and Write access.

  • Adding more than one video effect

I have a short clip that I want to give both the "aged film" look to as well as make it black and white.
Both these effects are available under Window > Clip Adjustments, but I can't figure out if it's possible to use both at the same time. Anyone know? Thanks.

In general, no, you cannot do two video effects at the same time.
However, black and white is a special case, because you can achieve this using Video Adjustments.
You can select Aged Film and then adjust to Black and White in Video Adjustments.
Try setting the Saturation slider all the way to the left (0%)
Then, move the Contrast slider to the right until it is around 50%.

  • Urgent, in the middle of project and missing ALL video effects!!!

I had to do a wipe and reload recently and when I reinstalled FCP I have NO video effects or audio effects in the viewer, nor when I click on Effects>Video Transition all greyed out.
I have Final Cut Studio 1 and did not install the whole studio suite-I only installed FCP from the suite as i am short on space on my MBP. I did install all the extra stuff outside the other apps.
    Where are they???
BTW My plugins folder in the app support library has:
    Text Scramble.bundle, Title 3d.bundle, Title Crawl.bundle, & Vector Shape.bundle

ok, I may have just screwed up... please read this forum to help me find out if I did or if something is really wrong.

  • How to create this video effect in my videos?

Hi all, new here, just got Premiere Elements 7 a week back, and must say i'm impressed...
I came across a video effect in a song found here (found from 0:53 till 1:30) where the screen goes completely white for a fraction of a second in a smooth manner and the picture returns again after that.
In fact i also want the effect of the fast forwarding of the video (audio remains the same) for a few seconds, which can also be found in the same clip in the same duration as i stated earlier... But till now i haven't been so successful at applying these...
Can you please help me out? Thanks!

For the "flash to white" you might take Paul's suggestion and invert it, i.e. placing the white matte on the Video Track (VT) above your footage, and Keyframing its Opacity. Personally, I'd look at doing this with Keyframing of Levels and cutting in a few frames of the white matte. Not sure about PE's Levels Effect (might look into some of the other "brightness" Effects too), but I'd be doing this in PrPro, which has a few more similar Effects.
One tip on the "fast-forward:" this was likely shot that way, with the camera mounted on a sturdy tripod and the a momentary switch used on the camera to do "stop motion" as the actors moved in the scene. If you do the Time Remapping, make sure to shoot on a tripod, so that the background does not change positions, only the actors to keep it looking clean. It also appeared to me that the videographer shot a few frames without the talent in the scene and these were either created in camera, or were inserted. I might have imagined this, but its use could be effective also. To keep the Audio at the exact pitch and speed, when Time Remapping, you'll want to use a soundtrack, and not rely on the Audio from the camera. You can do some work with the camera Audio to try and maintain pitch, but it can be a lot of work. Even for ambient sounds, i.e. the background sounds of the field, or forrest, I'd keep it, plus the soundtrack, separate from the Video stream.
An older Sci-Fi parody, "Ice Bandits" used a bit of stop motion freeze-framing and also under-cranking of the camera, for both Audio & Video, to create a humorous take on this Effect. If you can get a copy of that (might be on DVD?), look at the battle-scenes near the end. Heavy makeup changes were also incorporated to simulate "aging" when the action was sped up. The Time Remapped Audio contributed to the humor aspect, as the voices took on a "chipmunk-like" sound, and even the SFX were sped up too.
I don't see much real stop motion anymore in video, as much can be done in post. Back in the cine days, it was used for all sorts of effects. Jack Boseburg did a three-film trilogy, called "Trolley," that incorporated a lot of real stop-motion camera work. In his film, he controlled the camera with an intervelometer.  I doubt that you could find a copy of this, however, as it was never commercially released.
    Good luck,

  • PRE 9: multiline title   overlay with a "warp wave" Video effect

I am trying for the following effect: Overlay a photo of a garden that is transmuting from a plane photo to a cartoon image (I have succeeded with this part of the effect) with a title. On separate part of the time line I have created a title that will be a video overlay of the photo & starts out with 0 opacity goes to 100% as "warp wave" Video effect (I have succeeded with this part of the effect) & then straightens out to be normal text --this is the part I can't correctly do.
When I figure out how to do the above I still have to move this sectional piece to overlay the Garden photo, which could be problematic
I will gladly change this method if there is easier way to accomplish the title, which is a multiline overlay to  a photo with a "warp wave" Video effect that straightens out the text.
    Has anyone done something similar?

Although it sounds like you're creating your title effect on a separate timeline? Not sure why you're doing that. It makes much more sense to just put it on a video track above your background.
If the Title is in a different Project, then Exporting/Sharing with Transparency must be considered. A Title in PrE will have Transparency, but one must take that into consideration, when doing the Export/Share, for use in other Projects. This is where the Millions of Colors + comes in, with many formats/CODEC's. The + is the Alpha Channel, and will be needed for Transparency.
    Good luck,

  • Video Effects Problems

When I go through my video effects and preview them I get white lines, white fragments (blocky), and or the whole screen turns white. When I click on the first effect it works fine and I can adjust the settings but when I go to the next one, thats when video turns bad. I have to click out of video effects to reset the image. This problem just started for me. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem.
Also, I recently installed FCE 4. Would this have anything to do with it. Since installing FCE 4 my rendering time has slowed way down in iMovie 06.
    Thanks.

    T -
I get a similar problem when I preview effects. I just assumed this was some kind of result of max-ing out on processing the preview, so I usually just click onto some other effect outside of the Quartz composer and then click back in and it's fine. I wouldn't worry about it, unless what I suggest won't work. I found this when I was looking to find out why adding video effects takes so long to process. It looks like video is just processor-intensive, any way you look at it.
    good luck.....
