Video Encoder can't read MPEG-2 video track

I've recorded some MPEG-2 videos from a new Sony camcorder,
and I can't turn them into FLV files using Flash CS3 Video Encoder.
Each time I open the settings window, it says "This file has no
readable video track."
However, the mpeg's play fine on ALL my media players (Real,
Windows Media Player, etc.).
I've found a workaround -- I have to use some freeware to
convert the MPEG-2 files into MPEG-4 files, and then the encoder
can read them. But I'm still mystified as to why the Adobe encoder
won't read the MPEG-2's.
Any ideas?
Peter

I wrote an article on MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 usage in Flash Video
encoders on Community MX. It's a free article, and it might help
you get your MPEG-2 encoded without any transcoding to MPEG-4. If
you have any questions after reading the article, let me know:

  • Some computers can't read MPEG 2 Videos

Ok.... I'm a bit bamboozled by this one:
I've got a custom preset that I use to send previews to our clients. I've Pasted the Settings below.
Just recently tow of my clients couldn't play the video. Both were mac systems, one of them an almost brand new Macbook Pro.
Their quicktime just said it was not a proper movie file. They play fine on my system (Powermac G5 with leopard) I've played it on my friends Powerbook G4 with no worries.
Anyone got any ideas what's up with this?

If you want a universal codec and your clients all have quicktime 7 or newer, H.264 is your guy. The other option is to do a quickie "DVD" of your mpeg2 video: use DVD SP or iDVD to make the video, (use whatever menus you want), then "burn" the DVD to your hard drive. The either burn a DVD from there, Toast it, or deliver it however you want.
DVD Player will play those image files if you deliver on some sort of hard drive (I don't know what plays those .img files on Windoze); if you deliver a regulation DVD-R, it will play on anything that can play a DVD-R (set top, Mac, Windoze with appropriate software); mpeg streamclip can extract the video and audio to a large variety of formats and it's free. mpeg streamclip can convert your m2v files as well as you need, to just about anything, including mpeg1.

PS: the reason Quicktime doesn't include mpeg2 playback for free (and QT is free), is that mpeg2 requires a royalty payment, so Apple charges those users who need it. Almost no one actually does outside of the pro world. Consumers get by with actual DVDs (the DVD player software pays a license fee, too, but you get that when you pay for OS X; users can download QT for free and pay Apple zero), mpeg1, H.264, DV streams, etc.

  • "Can't Read Or Write to disk" Video Won't Transfer To Ipod

I have transfered videos to my ipod in the past but I have two tv shows from the Itunes story that won't transfer.
They are in the correct mpeg 4 whatever format. My itunes is the most resent version, but for some reason I keep getting the same error.
"Cannot Read Or Write To Disk".
    HELP??!!
      Windows XP

I've got this problem too. My 5g iPod 30gig syncs after about 3 minutes with iTunes then after loading songs and videos after 10 minutes i get the same message your getting - "Can't Read Or Write to disk". I think theres some kind of USB2 conflict or something. All my other USB devices work fine. All my drivers and software is up-to-date.

  • How can I view mpeg videos using QuickTime?

Having difficulty viewing old mpeg files on my Macbook Pro.. QuickTime won't play it... says:

    Hi,
See if VLC can play the MPEG video. VLC can play most formats that QuickTime might not be able to play.
If you like QuickTime, give Perian a try. It's a plug that allows QuickTime to play more video formats.
    Hope this helps.

  • How can I get MPEG-2 video into Final Cut Pro X?

Hello!  I have several MPEG-2 video files on which I need to perform some edits.  When I tried to import them into Final Cut Pro, I learned that Final Cut Pro can't import MPEG files.  Okay, so I went into QuickTime and exported one as 720p.  20 minutes later, I had a video that I could load in FCP.  Awesome.  Except that when I watched the video, the audio was waaaaaaaay out of sync.  So, is there a different way I could get this MPEG-2 video into a format that FCP will like while keeping video and audio together?
I would keep trying a few different things without direction, but these videos are like 90 minutes long and the conversion process is lengthy.
    Thanks!

Although I looked up the equipment, I couldn't find what kind of MPEG2. I'm assuming program stream.
I don't know why you had the sync problem with QT. You could bring it into FCP and detach the audio and manually line it up it's off by a constant amount.
Or you can use MEG Streamclip. You will also need the playback component, which is $20. Follow the instructions on the Squared 5 site to install it. Streamclip is worth having even if you don't use it this time around.
    Good luck.

  • Can't read m4v video files since I've installed Itunes 10.4 update.

    Hello,
I've bought video files on Itunes Store which were working perfectly so far on my macbook pro.
Since I've installed Itunes 10.4, when I launch m4v files, I just have a black non active screen, no message, nothing else.
Other video or audio files can be read.
I'm using mac OS X 10.6 so it's supposed to work.
My other mac (Imac) which is using Itunes 10.3 can read these m4v files without any problem.
So I tried to get back to Itunes 10.3 (for my macbook pro) but I can't cause the Library has now been created with a more recent version of Itunes.
Please tell me what should I do...

    Hello,
I have the exact same problem... anyone knows what to do?

how can I play MPEG-4 files in Premier Elements?  It plays in iTunes but I only see video in Elements

    LGSh
Lots of questions, lots of answers needed as mentioned by Hunt. But please include what version of Premiere Elements that you are using when you reply.
How are you importing these file into your Premiere Elements project?
After you drag your file to the Timeline, do you see both an video and audio component (on Video 1/Audio 1) or is there nothing on the Audio 1 track? If you can see a wave form or file on Audio 1, have you checked all the program's volume settings including Edit Menu/Preferences/Audio Hardware and the ASIO settings?
    More later.
Please do not hesitate to ask if you need clarification on anything written.
    Thank you.

  • ITunes can't read my iPod Video 5th Generation

    Hey guys,
So my iPod was messed up for a while back, but I managed to reset/restore it so it's basically at a clean slate. Now when I plug it into my computer, it shows the normal "Do not disconnect." screen and it even shows up on My Computer.
The problem is: iTunes can't read it. It shows nothing on the side panel of iTunes. I tried doing all the device manager things and everything seems to be good. I have an iPod Nano 3rd Generation and it works perfectly well on my iTunes when I plug it in.
Any suggestions on how to get my iTunes to read my iPod Video 5th generation?

    Watcha,
I haven't had any of these problems yet, but getting ready to download the newer version of Itunes. I have a HP Pavilion PC-based laptop with Windows 7, and also an IPOD Video 5th Gen. So I really hope I won't get any problems. Sorry I didn't have any solutions and hope your problems were solved.

  • Can quicktime play an video track with multiple alternate audio tracks?

    Hi,
If I have a video track with multiple alternate audio tracks (say different languages), can a user select the audio track of his choice and play in Quick time?
    Thanks,
    Apurva

Does quick time/ safari have this capability?
QT (i.e., the QT structure embeded in current Mac OS/device IOS versions) has the ability to switch between alternative audio tracks assuming the file is properly encoded and the compression format is supported. QT 7, QT X, iTunes, and similar app player GUIs can switch between such tracks during playback but the QT plug-in cannot. In a similar manner, devices like TV can switch between such tracks but an iPhone cannot just as an iPhone can select "Chapters" but the QT browser plug-in cannot but an iPhone file programmed with both chapters and alternate audio tracks can be played back through a TV device and access both chapters and alternative audio tracks.
What I want to use is one video track with alternate audio tracks in a set level manifest and play this using HTTP Live streaming. I'm using the manifest mentioned here :
    http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-pantos-http-live-streaming-07#section-8.7
Since I do not use playlists, I am not familiar with the approach in your example. If I want alternate audio and/or video tracks, I create standalone video files with these features built in. Nor do I use RTSP if that is what you mean by "live streaming" of content. If I want to "stream" the content, I use "Fast Start" files programmed to open in the QT player app which supports these features or create reference or QT Media Link files that do the same thing.
As you mentioned, Safari on my iPhone is playing the default/first alternate audio track mentioned but not giving an option to switch tracks.
Neither Safari nor the Video app GUIs on your iPhone have a built in switching option. The only way to switch to alternate audio tracks is to do so with QT 7 Pro or possibly iTunes before loading or streaming the video file. (Am still speaking about a standalone file here and not a programmed playlist/RTSP switch.)
However Quick time on my Mac machine only plays the audio with the the video stream and not the alternate audio track.
The QT player app GUI only switches between tracks that are stored as part of the standalone file. Basically, QT files may contain up to 99 individual data tracks. In alternative audio videos, multiple audio tracks are added to the file by an editor like QT 7 Pro but only one track is designated as "active." All other tracks are designated as "inactive." The QT player GUI allows the viewer to select which audio track he or she wants to hear and then turns off the current audio track and turns on the selected audio track. Otherwise all active tracks would play simultaneously.
Is there a way to switch tracks on my iPhone on Safari?
As previously noted, the default track can be manually changed by QT 7 Pro or, I believe, iTunes (used to have this capability) before actually loading or streaming content.
    Does quicktime have this capability?
As far as I know, only with regard to stand alone files programmed with multiple alternate tracks. I am not a HTML, HTML5, or Java programmer so I assume there may be web alternatives here but they would be beyond the scope of my expertise.
Do you know any free player that can do this?
Again, I don't use either playlists or RTSP so I've never had a need to look for/use alternative players that might meet your needs. I simply find it easier to build files that work correctly in current player app/device GUIs already having these capabilities.
Or the very last option, can I build a player to do this? If yes can you suggest where/how I start?
Once again, I assume this might be possible but not part of my experience since, for my part, easier work flows are available.

  • Can't assign chapter track to video track

In the "Creating a Chapter List" help screen, step 17 says "Choose the main video or audio track from the Chapters pop-up menu." But when I do that, the Chapter pop-up menu only gives me the Text track as an option. How can I get the video track to appear as an option? Thanks for any advice.
    Eric

I'm using QuickTime v6.5.2. If you're using v7, your screens might look a little different from mine.
To connect the chapter track to the video track, go to "Get Movie Properties" (Apple-J) and select the chapter track in the left-hand popup. In the right-hand popup, select "Make Chapter".
In the main properties window, there will be a window that shows the tracks controlled by the current chapter track, and a pair of buttons to set or unset the chapter owner track. When you hit the set button, a pop-up should give you the names of all the tracks that can be tied to the chapter track. That's where you should choose the video or audio track.
Does that help, or am I just telling you what the manual already confused you with? 8-)
