Video Encoding Error after system upgrade
I recently upgraded to the new Maverick OS. I needed to burn some DVDs. Other than the other idvd projects needing to reconnect with the media they worked fine. but I have one that keeps aborting DVD burns with the error that it was aborted during video encoding. Has anyone else experience this glitch? Does it have anything to do with maverick? I have tried reconnecting the media, using different encoding formats, nothing has worked so far.
I too have the same issue. No problem before upgrading to Mavericks. This is what I found.
If I am using something I created in iMovie I have no problems. If I have a file not created from iMovie, I get the error sometimes. I create a lot of files from Handbrake to put on my Apple TV. If I select Apple TV 2 in Handbrake, I get the error when putting in iDVD. If I choose Normal encoding (default), I don't have the issue. Both are M4V files and are MP4 format. I look at the difference in the file encoding from command I in finder and there is very little difference. The one that won’t work has a codec called AC3. The one that works doesn’t have AC3 listed. In Quicktime, I do a command-I and I find the data rate is slower on the one that works. Other than that they are identical. Very strange. I am going to do what works.

[solved] Opera & Sublime Text have graphic errors after system upgrade
Hi all,
I hope this was not already answered, but I couldn't find anything in the wiki or the forums.
Since a pacman -Syu yesterday, Opera (from official repo) and Sublime Text (from the AUR) have some weird graphical glitches:
Opera: http://i.imgur.com/7XfPK.png
Sublime Text: http://i.imgur.com/q5guw.png
(The menus in Sublime Text do work without graphical glitches, I am pretty sure they are drawn with GTK. The rest uses some custom drawing methods AFAIK.)
Other programs, including 3D-accelerated games, work fine like before.
I first suspected the catalyst driver, so I went to the wiki and read that it is now in the official repos. So I installed that version. Same effects. So back to the version from Vi0L0s catalyst repo. Did still not work. Then I tried the catalyst-generator package with the same effects.
Then I looked in pacman.log to see what was upgraded. I then downgraded the kernel and all packages that seemed to have something to do with graphics. Still the same error. Downgraded more packages and finally managed to break X11 :-/.
I then upgraded everything again so at least most things work.
I now have this kernel version: 3.6.2-1-ARCH
I am using systemd.
My graphics card has a Radeon HD 7750 Chip.
My pacman.log: http://pastebin.com/RK8cngNq (The upgrade that caused this was at 2012-10-16 14:43)
Has someone a idea what I can do?
Thanks,
Kevin
EDIT:
I now run pacman -Syu on my notebook. Both programs work like a charm. The notebook has an Intel GPU. So it must be an issue with the raden driver. I'll try downrading that again...
Yet another EDIT:
Didn't work. Here is what I have done to downgrade:
1. Removed installed catalyst version (installed libgl and lib32-libgl temporarilly so pacman would not remove all 3D-related stuff).
2. Downloaded all catalyst related packages from the Arch Rollback Machine from 2012-10-08 and installed them using pacman -U
3. Downgraded X and other related(?) packages:
# cd /var/cache/pacman/pkg
# pacman -Uf xorg-server-common-1.12.4-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xorg-server-1.12.4-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xf86-input-evdev-2.7.3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz freeglut-2.8.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz khrplatform-devel-8.0.4-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz mesa-8.0.4-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz lib32-mesa-8.0.4-4-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz libglapi-8.0.4-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz libgbm-8.0.4-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz libegl-8.0.4-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz xf86-video-vesa-2.3.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
Had a running X after this, but Opera and Sublime Text are still broken.
Now upgraded again...
Last edited by kch42 (2012-10-19 14:39:13)To find out, which libraries are involved, I executed opera and subl using strace and then went to a python shell to filter the output for libraries (finding stuff that looks like lib*.so, only catching the middle part) and printing the libraries that both strace logs had in common.
These libraries are loaded by both programs:
X11
Xau
Xcomposite
Xcursor
Xdamage
Xdmcp
Xext
Xfixes
Xi
Xinerama
Xrandr
Xrender
atk-1.0
bz2
c
cairo
canberra
canberra-gtk
canberra-gtk-module

equinox
expat
ffi
fontconfig
freetype
gcc_s
gdk-x11-2.0
gdk_pixbuf-2.0
gio-2.0
glib-2.0
gmodule-2.0
gobject-2.0
gthread-2.0
gtk-x11-2.0

ogg
pango-1.0
pangocairo-1.0
pangoft2-1.0
pcre
pixman-1
pixmap
png15
pthread
readline
resolv
rt
stdc++
tdb
vorbis
vorbisfile
xcb
xcb-render
xcb-shm
z
Some of these libraries have nothing to do with graphics, after filtering these out:
X11
Xau
Xcomposite
Xcursor
Xdamage
Xdmcp
Xext
Xfixes
Xi
Xinerama
Xrandr
Xrender
atk-1.0
cairo
canberra
canberra-gtk
canberra-gtk-module
equinox
fontconfig
freetype
gdk-x11-2.0
gdk_pixbuf-2.0

pango-1.0
pangocairo-1.0
pangoft2-1.0
pixman-1
pixmap
png15
xcb
xcb-render
xcb-shm
Both use a lot of X* libraries. But I already downgraded X and the graphics driver and that didn't work...
I still have no idea, but perhaps someone has? -
IDVD video encode error when burning to DVD
I am trying to burn a new copy of a project I successfully burned to DVD 2 years ago. I have not changed the source material. After the menu renders and video encoding begins I immediately get an error message "video encoding error." There are no menu warnings. All video is successfully previewed. Nothing has changed from the previous burn. The project info box shows all video and audio properly encoded and present.
What gives? The way from FCE or FCP has been the same for me for lot's of years since FinalCut 1.2.5 I think (was no Express or Pro then)
And QuickTime Conversion never worked for me - I guess You were lucky two years ago.
FCE/P to iDVD
Several things
• How to go from FCE/P to iDVD
• Free space on Start-up hard disk
• Encoding
• Brand and type of DVDs used
• Burn speed set
• iDVD BUG
• Chapters
How to go from FCE/P to iDVD I do
• Disable Screen and Energy saver
• IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mix-down
• Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
• Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
• Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
• NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
Free space on Start-up hard disk
I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
Just double click on the Hard Disk icon (top right on DeskTop) and read on bottom part of this windows frame e.g,
( in English - 1 of 14 selected, 38.24 GB FREE)
Encoding
• I use Pro Quality encoding if material (video + menu) exceeds 40 minutes ! if less I use Best Performances
Brand and type of DVDs used
• I use Verbatim
• I use DVD-R
Burn speed set
• I set down this to x4 (or x1) - BEST IS NOT BEST at all only fastest and results in Maximum amount of BURN ERRORS !
iDVD BUG
• One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to
the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither
of them will work.
Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
Use of Chapters
• I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
• NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self
• No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
Material used to build movie
• video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this e.g. .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
• audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
• photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
Trash iDVD pref. file and run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.
from post ??
May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screen-saving

GDM errors on VMWare after system upgrade
After a system upgrade today, I'm getting this when GDM starts:
gdm-binary[595]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server for log errors
There aren't any errors in the Xorg log. The vmware driver is explicitly listed as being loaded:
Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/vware_drv.so
Modul vmware: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
vmware: Using vmwlegacy driver everything is fine.
vmwlegacy: driver for VMWare SVGA: vmware0405, wmare0710
When I run gdm, I get this:
** (gdm-binary:970): WARNING **: Failed to acquire org.gnome/DisplayManager
** (gdm-binary:970): WARNING **: Could not acquire name; bailing out
There are several gdm processes running. When I kill them, they're all restarted with the same results.
I've reinstalled xorg-server, xorg-apps, gdm, and xf86-video-vmware.
From what I've gathered, there's a problem with the video driver.
Any recommendations on troubleshooting this?Solved for me using the solution in this post: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1072193
I wouldn't mark the present thread as solved, however, since the original poster was experiencing issues with VMWare, while my own problems were on VirtualBox. -
Youtube Video Format Error after OS 3.0 Upgrade
after i upgraded my iPhone 3G OS 2.2.1 to 3.0, none of the youtube videos are not playing and displaying this error message "This movie format is not supported."
anyone has a clue on what is going on? thanks!
ps. i am using the youtube application that came with the phone.I'm getting the same message when I try playing a podcast I just downloaded. I've also upgraded my iPhone 3G to OS 3.0 and my iTunes is ver 8.2.1 The podcast is "peasinapodcast's" with Jim Gaffigan. I haven't tried any others yet, but I can see from those reviews some other iPhone users are having the same issue.

startx runs on root (with strange x environment) with no problems

Guess it's due to the mesa update and using the legacy nvida-173xx driver

Finding: Incorrect SQL throws a random error (after 2005 upgrade)
Hi I thought that I would share an experience that we found after upgrading a system to 2005:
Due to the upgrade of SBO, one of our addons didn't work properly after upgrading it to 2005. Basically the code would break in random places (while stepping through it in the Development Environment).
After some time we identified the error was being thrown because a sql query we were using was incorrect due to the changing of the DB structure in the upgrade. The weird thing was that it didn't throw an error at rs.DoQuery(query) but actually would step into the recordset and then the addon would suddenly stop working - hence the reason it took a while to identify it was the sql causing the problem.
Anyway updating the sql fixed the problem, but if anyone else is finding strange behavior whilst trying to identify why an addon might stop working after an upgrade, you should check any sql being used is still correct....
DanielThe first versions of SBO2005A SDK (PL00 to PL04) was the say the least VERY buggy... PL05,06 and now 07 seem to get things under control... Any rampup version of 2005 should at least get up PL05 ASAP... I didnt have many problem with the SQL, but "Server produced an error was a very common error".. my problem was primarily in matrixes (add/remove of lines), itemevent (pval internal COM error) and the dangerouse UserTable error due to currupted object in it....

I have Studio 8 and am trying to use Flash Video Encoder for
the first time to convert a wmv file to flash. When I add the video
and seek to start the queue, I get an error message which reads,
"The output file could not be written because you do not have
enough system privileges." I'm really green at this - can someone
help? Thanks so much.I used to get this issue when I was trying to pull info
directly from cd-rom. Copy information locally and then try to use
flash encoder..it should work. let me know

Fonts went strange after system upgrade
After 'pacman -Syu' i rebooted and my fonts started looking strange, kinda bigger.
In some places its not even noticeable but again in other places it is x(.
I'm using Flubox as a WM and i really don't think this has anything to do with the WM.
I was wondering if anyone else experienced some similar problems after this upgrade?

I tried clearing the font cache but it didin't help.
Any ideas?I'm having a similar issue. Only difference is that fonts looks smaller than before the upgrade.
I don't think this has something to do with KMS, because that update was a week ago an no problem was detected. This small fonts issue is probably related to recent updates on xorg- stuff.
Moreover, the strange thing here is that only GUIs fonts got smaller. Fonts on firefox (the webpage, not the user interface) looks exactly the same as before.
What should we do? -
Screen blinking after system upgrade
Hi!. Last evening I made a system upgrade (-Syu), this morning I've turned the pc on and I've discovered my screen was blinking, the problem starts when grub finishs and starts Arch. I've searching in the forum but I didn't find anything. The problem is solved partialy when the screen resolution is changed to 1280*960 (the original is 1280*1024), at this resolution, the blinking dissapears.
My graphic card is a Sapphire Radeon HD 6570, the driver I have ever used is xf86-video-ati.

Anyone knows what's happening?
ThanksHello everyone!
After upgrading to kernel 3.14.1-1, I suffered from the problem of screen flashing rapidly when I booted into the Arch Linux.
Problem Description
As we know, when the kernel boots from the grub, it firstly enters a text model where the resolution of the screen is low. At this stage, "Welcome to Arch Linux!" is printed on the screen. And then it loads some kernel modules and the video display becomes normal with a correct resolution supported by the monitor. If Xorg is not installed, it will stay at a command promt asking for user name and password. The above is a normal kernel booting process. Here the problem is:
When my Arch Linux kernel tries to change from the model with low resolution of the screen to a normal video model, it fails. After loading the video card driver, the screen flash once and I can see the kernel change the resolution of the screen correctly, but the whole screen begin flashing rapidly. The screen flash makes me feel very dizzy. At the same time the position of the screen display is also wrong. The screen splits into two part: the right part of the screen should be on the left while the left part of the screen should be on the right side. Each long line of text is splited into two non-continuous fragments.
After downgrading to the linux kernel 3.12.9-2, all the problems disappear. It should be the problem from kernel 3.14.1 I think since the problem begins when I upgrade my kernel to that version.
System info
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz
Platform: x86_64
kernel version: 3.14.1-1 from core.
GPU model: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Caicos PRO [Radeon HD 7450] [1002:677b]
GPU driver:xf86-video-ati(for Xorg). I did not use the Catalyst driver.

Slimer qt fonts & wierd encoding issues after the upgrade to qt 4.5
After the upgrade to qt 4.5, all qt apps have really slim fonts http://i42.tinypic.com/2ln8x10.png
here on an older screenshot http://i42.tinypic.com/2chmbnn.png.
Also there are some glitches with the encoding http://i43.tinypic.com/16ke3o6.png, after i press something it fixes itself http://i44.tinypic.com/2ds302d.png
Last edited by Maki (2009-03-15 11:26:55)About the slim fonts... this is actually a fix with qt4.5. Old qt didnt respect some system font settings so now that it does, tweak ~/.fonts.conf how you want it.
And about glitches... there will be some minor problems untill kdemod rebuilds against the new qt, you can rebuild workspace yourself if you dont want to wait for them. -
No battery life after system upgrade
I've searched this forum and found a few notes about significant battery problems after Android upgrades. Immediately after upgrading my Droid X, my battery life went from more than 24 hours to about 4 hours. The battery is very hot and takes about 6 hours to charge. Clearly something is draining the battery. The Verizon tech folks declared it a faulty battery and are sending a new one. I am certain that's not the problem, especially since others have reported the same issue.
So I hoped to wipe the cache before having to do a factory reset -- it was suggested as a possible solution. I have found some instructions for wiping the cache, but I can't seem to get the instructions to work. I power off my Droid, then hold the home key. Nothing happens. So I can't get to the menu that gives the options mentioned. Can anyone help? I loved my Droid until this update... I really need my phone to work as I am self-employed. I am my own IT department!Hi dazzie,
I understand your discontent; I would be frustrated if my phone's battery drained for no apparent reason. Please run your phone in Safe Mode as recommended by Cody21 (thank you!). Safe Mode temporarily disables all applications that have been installed via the Android Market. Performing this troubleshooting step is necessary to determine whether a 3rd party application is the cause of an Operating System / Application issue.
I have checked my resources and I learned that similar battery issues have occurred with other devices upon a software upgrade due to third party applications that are not fully compatible with the upgrade Operating System and a Factory Reset has resolved most post upgrade issues. Please do a Factory Reset as this may resolve your concerns.
Please keep in mind that performing a hard reset will remove ALL data including the Google account, system data, application data, application settings, and downloaded applications. -
[SOLVED]Problem with logging in after system upgrade
Hi,
I'm encountering some problem after rebooting my machine just after last upgrade. Few minutes ago I was sure I found the source of the problem when system hang on "Reached target Graphical Interface" message. Reason - nvidia drivers had to be replaced with legacy version (https://www.archlinux.org/news/nvidia-340xx-and-nvidia/). But it didn't help. Also it made things a little bit worse. Because now my system uses nvidia-340xx and it seems drivers are fine but when login screen of lightdm should appear screens stay blank... and nothing happens. I simply can't do anything.
What I noticed is also xfce4-session was upgraded (4.10.1.3->4.10.1-5) and maybe this is the separate problem? but I can't downgrade this package as some time ago I removed all contents of /var/cache/pacman/pkg.
What I have is arch on pendrive so I can chroot into existing system.
Any ideas?
Last edited by jakub (2014-10-08 22:09:02)I found something similar to line
(EE) Mar 07 14:05:07 NVIDIA(0): WAIT: (E, 0, 0x837d, 0)
these values are not exact as I'm too tired now to rewrite the real ones from screen
maybe I should install some older nvidia drivers (these 340xx are broken somehow I think). Unfortunately I don't have my /pkg content anymore.
Where can I download packages like nvidia-340.32-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz from? (according to pacman.log I had this version back in July and it was working fine I think).
I could also start X with Nouveau drivers but not xfce (anyway I would like to install old nvidia drivers back)
