Video Files in iPhoto?

Is there any way to play video files that are stored in iPhoto? I'd hate to export all of the just to play them in Front Row.

There is no native support of iPhoto video files in Front Row at this time. You need to either add them to iTunes or your Movies folder.
You can add them to iTunes by turning off copying in iTunes and dragging the videos into iTunes.

How do I copy my video files from iPhoto to iMovie? The two + hour wait for thumb nails and hour long wait looking for the right videos kills the time I have to edit.

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • How do I export video files from iPhoto to a backup external hard drive for safekeeping?

How do I export video files from iPhoto to a backup external hard drive for safekeeping?  Each time I try, the video will not play from the external hard drive.

Use the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with Kind = Original.  That should get the original video file exported.  Try to export one to the Desktop first and open it with Quicktime Player.  If all goes well export the rest to a folder on the EHD. How is the EHD formatted?  It should be OS X Extended (journaled).

  • How do I transfer video files in iPhoto to iMovie?

I downloaded some photos and video files from my Canon 7D to iPhoto.  When I try to upload the videos Facebook and Youtube do not recognize the video files as being video files, possibly because they are in iPhoto.  Will transferring my video files from iPhoto to iMovie enable me to upload the video files? And how do I convert my video files to MP4 files?

I've found dragging & dropping onto desktop & then drag & drop into iMovie works okay

  • 'Lost' or 'un-linked' video files in iPhoto 11

    Hi Everyone,
In a nutshell, it seems that iPhoto can't find most of my video files, even though they are still there on the HDD. Additionally, it won't let me drag them onto / into the app.
Just updated to the latest iphoto 9.2.1 and the video files in my library (apart from some recent ones) won't play. If i click the thumbnail, the page goes to a ! in a triangle. If there is an image next to it on the thumnail page, that image will load. With the video file, if i go to File > Reveal in Finder > 'Modified File' /or/ 'Original File', they're both greyed out, which implies that iPhoto has 'lost' the file.
If i do the same with the image file, i can reveal the original in the finder, and see that the video file (ie .mov) is still there alongside the image file, and if i double click it, then it loads in quicktime and plays perfectly. If i try to drag that file into iphoto, i get the error
    Unreadable Files: 1
The following file could not be imported. The file is in the iPhoto Library.
(It then gives me the true path and file name).
I have started up iPhoto with Cmd (or whatever it is) and ticked all of the boxes to rebuild the folders etc, but it doesn't work, and the fault remains.
At least i have the files (have heard some horror stories about iPhoto 11) but can anyone tell me how to get it all back working?
    Cheers, and thanks in advance

Thank you Terence for taking the time to reply - and thank you v v v much for giving me the answer!
Using iphoto library manager to rebuild the library meant that i could then add the images that weren't showing up, to get a full library back again.
Incase anyone else is coming after me:
i rebuilt the library with iPLM
went to the old iPhoto library and showed the contents of the package (right click on the iPhoto file)
Dragged over whole folders full of images / videos from the 'Masters' folder
    Told it to ignore duplicates.
Also i found this, though it's dependent on you not having opened the library with iPhoto 11:

    though it may help someone.

  • Used "Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto" now my video files in iPhoto have an error message "A necessary data reference could not be resolved."

As the title states, I used the app "Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto" to get rid of 6 GB of duplicate pictures.  However, now when I go to view a video in iPhoto, I get the error message "A necessary data reference could not be resolved."  I am able to view the video clips (with sound, etc.) in Finder.  However, I want to know if there is a way to restore them in iPhoto?????
    Thanks,
    Leslie
I see that the suggested solution is to restore from back-up... is there anyway to do that without bringing in ALL of the duplicate photos I just deleted?

Try going back to QuickTime 7.4, we've seen the same problem occur with the 7.5 update. How did you make the .mov file that plays all of the files? For us, the problem shows up with reference movies (such as that .mov) made on a Mac, but works fine if it is created on Windows.

  • IPhoto won't play videos (with QT7), after renaming video files in Finder

    Hi folks,
My iPhoto9 played video files with Quick time when double clicking the video files in iPhoto. Yesterday I renamed approx 50 video files in Finder (double clicked and renamed them). Now iPhoto won't play them when double clickling. The only way to play them is to a) drag/drop to vlc or b) double click them in Finder.
How can I tell iPhoto to play the video files (interesting fact: the meta data still shows the video old file names)?
    Can anyone help me? Thanks!!!!
    Thanks
    AS

I have not changed default seetings, so I assume I'm running Managed libary.
The yes, that's the case. So, to do this you had to access the Package File and then rename the files. Wasn't the fact that the files are not directly accessible a hint?
I tried overwriting iLife09 (without deleting the version that was on -> it didn't help!!)
Nor would it. That might restore the applications (though without removing the receipts it won't be very effective) but the problem isn't the Applications. The problem is that you have corrupted the Library.
What if I delete iLife and reinstall it. Will iPhoto then be able to play the videos (that I previously renamed with Finder)?
No. Because, again, it will not undo what you did in the Library folder.
As you have no back up, you no have exactly one option: Create a new Library and start over from scratch, importing the originals from the Library you trashed.

  • Can't transfer video out of iPhoto...

Hi- hope this is the correct place to post this- if not please re-direct me.  Thanks.
question: I can't transfer video file from iPhoto (9.5.1) to iMovie (10.0.4).  The video is 6 minutes and 465MB.  I tried to trim but that doesn't shorten actual file.  Any suggestions?  There seems to be a size limit.   Also- what's strange is that when I click "import" from iMovie,  I can't find any library of iPhoto events.  So, I tried to drag the file from iPhoto to iMovie (seems to work for smaller files) and that's when I discovered I couldn't drag this bigger one.  Thanks,
    Brad

Can you export the video to the desktop as kind = original and see if you can then import it to iMovie

  • Questions on how to utilize still/ Video files from 3Gs using iLife 09?

    Hi,
Just got back from a trip where I took a bunch of stills and videos using the my 3Gs. I just downloaded them onto my Mac using iPhoto.
    1. How do get the video files from iPhoto into iMovie as it seems that iPhoto imported it all.
    2. How do I get the images that were taken with Location services turned "ON" to display the location they were taken?
    3. Will location mapping also work with iPhone video files?

Maybe someone in the iMovie discussion forum would know some of the specifics from iPhoto to iMovie. I thought I remember seeing a way to import straight from my iMove.

  • Video Files Import into an IMAC

Can someone lend me their advice ...
I am using a PC and creating a POWERPOINT show ... I have different tools to take this show to convert it into a video file (like MP4 etc).
What Ia m trying to do - is to merge a video file and pictures - the pictures to follow the movie - and throughout this "show" - one MP3 file will be played.
So the questions is - importing a video file into IPHOTO - is this possible - and if so - what is the best file type to convert the PowerPoint into???
Once I am able to create this show - then the plan is to put it into IMOVIE - and cut a DVD ...
Any suggestions - input - ideas - would be greatly appreciated!

Great Guys! Thanks for the advice!
I like using PowerPoint for it's ability to have total control on objects like text and graphics on 1 slide - in a show. Timed to music - it can produce some dramatic affects. I ALSO like the easy ability to take a MP# file -and if I have let's say - 33 pictures - it automatically splits the song equally - to each picture of the show, enabling an easy finish.
What I would LIKE to do - is to use PowerPoint transitioning affects on about the first 7 slides (pictures) - then - take that out as a video file - PULL IT into IPHOTO - then - add the remaining pictures to complete the show - ALL timed to one MP3 file.
Basically - I have other programs that can convert (export) the Powerpoint show (file) to any video output - I just need to know which one would work with IPHOTO. Adding these into IMOVIE - enables me then to cut a DVD, which then can be duped ...
    Make sense???
I SO appreciate your expertise and suggestions as to the file types to use - or anything else you would recommend! THANK YOU!
Again - its the file types that I am seeking advice - that will work with IPHOTO!

  • Short video files

Is there a way to move a video file from iPhoto to iPhone 3G? If so, which file format is best to use? I have 10 second or less clips from digital camera that I want to put on iphone. Right now they are .avi but wouldn't sync with photos in designated folder.
    Thanks for any suggestions!

You should use iPhoto's "reveal in finder" option from the contextual menu to find the actual videos, then use the iTunes import feature to put them into iTunes. From there, either convert them to iPhone/iPod format and then sync up from the movies tab, or try and leave them as is and do the same. Your iPhone should be able to use them from there.

    Detail:
I've recently purchaced a 4TB Thunderbolt drive to store my "vast" music and photo libraries. iPhoto had an issue reading the moved library, so I bought and used iPhoto Library Manager to "rebuild" it. Apart from much of the original data such as date taken & camera used etc, it appears to be working well. The aforementioned mpg video was taken some 9 years ago, using an early model "iMate" smart phone, and opens and plays fine on iPhoto, but I cannot open it with anything else, (I've tried iMovie, VLC players, Wondershare and Handbrake) nor can I share it. I just want to edit it, and share it with family.
    Any help would be appreciated...

No - not iMovie, VLC, Wondershare or Handbrake... Quick time starts with a "CONVERTING", then I get
I've looked at the "tell me more" links, tried downloading some of the movie players there. I'm begining to think the file is corrupt.
Thanks for getting back to me again though - appreciate it...

how do I import my video files from old iPhoto - in time machine - to new iPhoto?  Photoes came across, video said incompatible.
i have moved from a mac pro to a mac mini,
Mini now has mavericks and latest iLife stuff, I clicked import, was all good, then at end, no videos came across.
Is Mavericks,/iPhoto having a compatibiltiy issue with some video formats....???
Your help is appreciated gang.: )

Please describe exactly what you did. In moving to a new machine no importing is involved. The best way is to simply connect the two computers together and drag the iPhoto library from the old one to the pictures folder go the new one and launch iPhoto
