Video files on my external HD won't play on my iMac

I recently backed up my iPhoto library onto an external drive due to space issues on my desktop iMac. I did this through the export option in iPhoto. All of the photos have transferred beautifully, however the video files are no longer playing. They have become .MOV files and open through Quicktime. The screen is black and the audio has disappeared, however they still appear to be the length that they are supposed to be (i.e. the duration time of each file is displayed properly). When I try to open them in iPhoto, it simply tells me that file type is unsupported, which leads me to hope that they just need to be converted before being played.
I have checked the forums and the only information I can stumble across is from 2011 and makes me think that the files are lost and irrecoverable.
Someone please help and tell me that I can still watch my videos. They are personal videos from the last 10+ years of my life, so I would be devastated if they are gone.
Thanks!

Get a second external drive, drag both the iTunes library and the pictures to it, launch iTunes with the Option key held down, and point it to that instance of the library. This also works with iPhoto, but see below.
A drive or partition needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended in order to hold an iPhoto library or for Time Machine to back it up.

  • How do i transfer video files to an external hard drive to free up space?

    How do I transer video files to an external harddrive to free up space on the computer? it seems that the files i transfer stay on the computer harddrive as well as the external.

    Once you copy (which is what you are doing when you move files to another drive) the files, you must then take the original files and delete them by putting them in the trash and then emptying the trash.
    Be sure you test the copies to make sure they work before you delete the originals.
    Best of luck.

  • IMac 2008 OS10.9.1 external dvd won't play movie DVD's

    iMac 2008 OS10.9.1 external dvd won't play movie DVD's. Other DVD/CD's are recognized.
    My internal DVD/CD p-layer/burner stopped working 3 years ago like many other iMacs did.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is all red because I am ******!

    I have discovered, no thanks to Samsung techs, what the problem is, and it might be revealing for others, as well. It seems that DVD Player, which is the app Apple provides in OS x for (naturally) playing videos, doesn't work with external drives if the computer has an internal drive – even when, as in my case, the internal drive is dead.
    I have learned, however, of the existence of a couple of alternative, free applications that run video and audio disks with external optical drives, and one of them, at least (VLC), seems to be widely acclaimed. Does anyone know whether bypassing DVD Player could be a bad idea? There were some gripes from one or two reviewers about awkwardness with playing audio DVDs with iTunes, but I'm not sure what they meant when they said that you have to click on individual items in a selection. Would that mean, for example, having to click on each movement of a Mozart trio? That I couldn't play an entire album's contents of another kind of music without clicking on each song?
    Getting the internal optical drive replaced would be prohibitive, even if the parts could be obtained, so I guess I'm stuck trying to deal with the external drive I have and finding the best replacement for DVD Player that I can find. The interesting thing is that the drive works beautifully with a MacBook Air I tried it with, so I guess that is because the Air doesn't have an internal drive?
    Wouldn't you think that Samsung techs would know all this? The one I spoke to told me to make sure that my system preference for CDs and DVDs was set to open automatically with DVD Player and sent me all kinds of FAQs, plus a way to get an RMA number for a return. Not a word about difficulties with Macs having an existing internal drive. And all after spending a very long time talking with me about what was going on, what the error message was, and so on. I guess the message hasn't gotten to them.
    I hope this information will be helpful to someone.

  • Why can't I import video files from an external hard drive?

    I am using Adobe Premiere Elements 12 on Mac OSX 10.7.5 trying to import video files from a Lacie Rugged External Hard Drive using both firewire and usb, neither with any luck. The error message I receive is:

    We can't import through the video importer either because the hard drive doesn't show up. We can, however, drag the videos to the desktop and do it that way but we'd like to avoid doing that if possible.

  • Working with video files on compatible external drive with imovie09

    I have run out of room on my MacBook Pro hard drive, so I have moved all of my video files onto a compatible external hard drive. How do I work with these file in imovie09, do I need to import the files back onto the computer or can I work with them from the external hard drive, if so how. Also, is it possible to after completing editing to save just the project on the computer rather than the hard drive or will that cause a "source video" issue.
    Ultimately, I would like to have all of the source video saved on the external hard drive and the projects saved on the computer
    I had no problems working and saving the files when just using the computer, the external hard drive has complicated things for me. Thanks.

    How did you move all of your video files? The best way in iMovie '09 is to do it in the Event Library. Make sure you're viewing hard drives (click the disk icon at the upper-right corner of the list of events). Then drag the events you want from your internal hard disk to the external one. That way iMovie keeps track of where the source files are located.
    You can do the same with project files in the Project Library, too.
    If you've already moved the files in the Finder, to do it cleanly, I'd recommend moving them back to the iMovie Projects and iMovie Events folders in your Movies folder. Then launch iMovie and move them as explained above.
    Or, make sure the iMovie Projects and iMovie Events folders are at the top level of your external hard drive. When you launch iMovie, it looks in those places for footage and projects, and will make them available.

  • Brand New Apple User trying to import video files from FreeAgent External..

    hard drive. Previous Dell owner and now I have converted. I have files saved to my FA Drive in a .MOD version and cannot play them on my Apple. What do I have to do to accomplish this? I have a JVC Everio HD camcorder.
    Any help for a newbie would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!

    Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    .mod are a JVC custom version of MPEG2 files. You should be able to play them in VLC. I would guess that your goal is actually to get them imported in such a format that they can be used in iMovie projects etc. It appears from this Apple article that many of the Everio models are compatible with iMovie 08 (you are out of luck if you wish to use the superior iMovie HD 6). I would simply suggest connecting the FreeAgent drive, load iMovie 08 and point it at the files.
    If you don't get anywhere I'd suggest posting in the iMovie forums as the chaps with real experience of video handling hang out there.
    BTW this forum is for the much older iMac (Flat Panel) models; as a new user I expect you have an Intel iMac.

  • Mountain Lion combines video files from an external SDHC memory card.

    Hi there!
    I just installed Mountain Lion and was very surprised to discover when inserting a memory card from my digital camera (not direct camera to Mac but through the direct slot on the MBP) that all videos I took where combined in one single - huge - Quicktime file.
    Clicking on it gives me an "Open Clip" window where I can launch individual video snippets. However several of these Massive files don't even work... (Upon clicking it gives me a "Could not complete operation" covered by a forever-lasting loading icon... (which never loads).
    I'm wondering if it's a feature that can be switched off?
    I haven't experimented yet, but would hate that the Mac sees all videos as a combined file, and maybe confuse the digital camera writing mode when I put the card back in the camera.
    Any feedback is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Calx

    Thanks David,
    You're right - it's MTS files.
    I had previously found the 'show package contents' right click but it doesn't seem to work consistently.
    i.e. On one 'source' it works, on another it loads a blank page. When I access the second source on an older Mac (non-mountain Lion) it reads about 30 MTS video files which all work properly.
    I really don't understand the logic in combining several hundred video files & create a composite huge file.
    Either way - thanks for your valuable suggestion!

  • Videos encoded with Apple Animation Codec won't play properly in QT7.5

    Quick Time version I have installed is 7.5 (149.5). I also have Perian 1.1 and Mpeg2 codec for QT.
    All of a sudden, all videos I render using Apple Animation Codec with alpha channel won't properly play in QuickTime, nor in Preview (when you click on .MOV file and press Space). They actually play, but colors are all screwed up and it looks like it's playing only alpha layer. I tried same movies on my work buddy's Mac and everything looks perfet. I also tried importing those videos into Flash, and everything works fine, but when I have to preview them in QT or using Finder's Preview, they look crazy. I can't send any screenshots since this thing happens on my work iMac (new aluminum one, Leopard 10.5.4, all updates installed) and I am at home now.
    I tried reinstalling QT but to no avail, nothing changed. I've looked through Library/QuickTime subfolder, and only items I could find were QuickTimeMPEG2.component, Perian.component, ffmpeg.component, and AppleIntermediateCodec.component.
    I'm slowly going crazy over here, because nothing I tried worked.
    Is there any way of completely removing everything QT related and reinstalling it from the scratch ? Please help!
    Thanks in advance!

    Hah, found out what's the problem. It is not my computer, it is not my QuickTime got corrupt. It is QuickTime's bug decoding movie file encoded using following combination of settings:
    Quick Time encoder
    Compression Type: Animation
    Depth: Millions of colors+ (alpha channel included)
    Quality: Best
    ParticleIllusion
    Output options
    Save Alpha - enabled
    Remove Black bg from RBG channels - if this item is enabled, this is exactly what gives QT problems trying to encode it. I repeat, this option must be enabled in some cases (it removes that nasty black-dirt-looking extra halo glow around the object that already has some kind of glow applied to it). It makes your animation rendered with alpha channel a lot better looking and animation seamlessly blends with any kind of colored background. Well, QT has problems "reading" this format.
    In the same time, if you import such animation rendered with this option enabled into Flash, everything looks perfectly fine. It's just QuickTime won't play it properly.
    Every single Mac I checked has this same problem, and it's not Mac's problem, it is QuickTime problem.
    I have two examples, you can see it yourself:
    First one is when black bg is still present in RGB channels (animation looks exactly as it should):
    http://www.sasha-z-creations.com/quicktime/Example_BlackPresent.mov
    And second one is when black bg is removed from RGB channels (colors looks weird):
    http://www.sasha-z-creations.com/quicktime/Example_BlackRemoved.mov
    I repeat, both examples look exactly the same (great looking) when imported into Flash dev utility.
    Cheers!

  • I want my flash video file NOT to load until I hit play...how can I do that?

    I am wanting this to improve the initial download speed of the page. I have already added a Poster Frame to video's, however it still seems to be loading the video file and just autoplaying.  Is there a way to NOT load the video file until the person hits play?  This is the AS3 script I used...
    import fl.video.VideoEvent;
    myPoster.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, playMovie);
    function showPosterFrame(event:Event):void {
    myPoster.visible = true;
    function hidePosterFrame(event:Event):void {
    myPoster.visible = false;
    function playMovie(event:MouseEvent):void {
    myVideo.play();
    myVideo.addEventListener(VideoEvent.PLAYING_STATE_ENTERED, hidePosterFrame);
    myVideo.addEventListener(VideoEvent.COMPLETE, showPosterFrame);
    I am using Dreamweaver to put the pages together via the Insert - Media - Flash...then putting the .swf file in the page.
    Thanks,
    Arguilo

    you can start the video and then stop it.  it will continue to download (which you can monitor).  when the time is right, you can enable the video's play button.  before the video's ready to start, you can entertain your users.

  • Video playback problems: ok in VLC, won't play in quicktime/MPEG streamclip

    Hi,
    I have files made in .mov format in Final Cut Pro. When put on my MacBookPro, they lose their file extension. If I add the extension back on again (or not) they play in VLC. Only the audio will play in MPEG stream clip. I have downloaded perian, and the mpeg-2 extra for Quicktime, but Quicktime will still not play these files.
    VLC file format says: audio files are sowt. The video file is mpgv codec.
    The sad thing is I need to use Transana, a video analysis software, which only works with Quicktime.
    I have checked out lots of forums, but nobody seems to have a good answer for this problem, assuming that the Perian or MPEG slipstream or the Quicktime add-on fill fix it.
    I'd be very, very grateful for any advice.
    Thanks very much

  • Video Streaming in Windows media player won't play through Airport Extreme

    Hello and thank you for reading my issue.
    I have the current square shaped airport extreme base station. My mother has a Windows XP system on her Toshiba laptop and she takes an online class which has video streaming for the lectures. When we connect to the network wirelessly or with an ethernet cable through the base station, the video will not begin to buffer and won't play from the website. It just states ready and doesn't buffer. However, if we connect the laptop straight to our cable modem without the base station, the videos stream and play perfectly. Anybody know how we can fix this to play through the wireless network? Thanks a lot.
    MacBook Pro 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    I've played with all sorts of software settings and configurations. This is what worked for me, but I'm not sure how it would work for anyone else, or if the issues are even related, but here goes.
    1 - Turn multicast rate to 1 MBPS in the drop down menu found in Airport Utility>Airport icon>Wireless Options Button.
    2 - Turn off multicast in Windows Media Player or Real Player
    3 - Turn on Video Overlay Optimization check box in Real Player.
    These things worked for me, hopefully they will help or give you some ideas for your own situtation.

  • I installed snow leopard and now videos on my Xfinity home page won't play

    I installed snow leopard and now videos on my Xfinity home page won't play

    You may be in the same boat as me.
    I deliberately bought a refurb Feb 2011 MacBook Pro, because it would have originally shipped with Snow Leopard. I have to run an application for my job, which does not run under Lion.
    Unfortunately, Apple is now upgrading all Snow Leopard machines, before selling them as refurbs. I purchased a legal copy of Snow Leopard, and have tried various downgrade solutions that I found posted on the net, without success. No matter what I do, it always goes into "three beep mode" after trying to install Snow Leopard.
    The latest development came this evening, while I was talking to the "geniuses" at Apple. Apparently, there is now a firmware revision that loads the first time you run Software Update under Lion, and it locks the machine so that it can't revert to Snow Leopard.
    The only option they have been able to offer me so far, is to return the machine and get a refund. This is maddening, as I HAVE to have a Snow Leopard machine, and can't find any other way to purchase one.
