Video filter question

Hi all,
I am using the Video Filter effect "Soft Focus", an FxPlug under "Blur" in FCP 5.1.2
I was messing around with the parameters and found that when I have the amount set to 0 (which should be no effect, right?) and let's say the strength is at .25, the image is still blurred. Why? I have the amount set to 0. Is it because of the strength? But the strength shouldn't matter because there is not amount set. I find this with several "blur" filters...that when the amount is 0, there is still distortion in the image.
What am I missing?
Jonathan

No not really - the parameters are the parameters.
If you reduce the Strength to 0 then it should have no effect with Amount also at 0.
I haven't used that filter but I'd assume you can define the centre of where the effect would be - that's likely where the Amount will come into play. An Amount or width of aperture, like a lens is my guess as to why they called it Amount.
Just have to play with them and learn them.

  • Video Filter - Basic 3D Question

    Oh great and wise ones,
Basic 3D Filter question. Problem, whenever you have an image/video clip twisted along its axis via the Basic 3D filter, the corners/edges get cut off. Are there any filters/tricks to manipulating an object in 3D space? I'm not looking for anything fancy here, just the basics. Or should I assume this is what Motion is for?
    Thanks!
    lance

    Hi -
Double click on the clip with the Basic 3D effect applied in the timeline.
Click on the Filters tab in the viewer.
At the bottom of the Basic 3D section you will see a control for Scale.
Adjust the Scale control until the edges of your frame are not being cut off.
If your frame is starting full frame and rotating, this means you might want to keyframe the Scale control so that it starts at 100% when the frame is flat to us, then becomes less as the frame rotates on edge, thereby keeping the edges of the frame visible.
    Hope this helps.

  • Video Filter Missing: AE

I keep getting a series of messages saying Video Filter Missing: AE.ADBE MagicBulletMojo as well as a string of various messages after "Video Filter Missing: AE...." I was wondering if the "AE" in that message meant that it was coming directly from a plugin within After Effects. I am trying to track down exactly why this is happening in my particular project if it was from something within After Effects or from Premiere.
I know that I have seen similar error messages with "Video Filter Missing: PR...." in other forums. So my biggest question is:
Does the AE or PR in the middle of the error correspond with the application that I was using the video filter in that is now missing?
    Thanks!

Placed the afx cs4 Fast_Blur.plugin on /Applications/Adobe Premiere Pro CS4/Adobe Premiere Pro CS4.app/Contents/Frameworks/MediaCoreUI.framework/Fast_Blur.pluginand nothing... ignored as when placing it on Plug-Ins folder...
Where is this mediacore folder on win?
Thanks for the suggestion, but I think that the Mac CS4 afx "Fast_Blur.plugin" isn't comptible with the Mac CS4 Premiere.
I don't own a CS3 mac version... does anyone knows if it has the fast blur? I could try to use that file...

  • Video Filter does not work.

    Hello.
I have been using Final Cut Pro 4 for a while and it worked fine before. But recently, any function of Video Filter does not work. I apply them to the clip, but the image does not show any changes on Canvas.
    Is the software's problem?
    Thanks in advance.

For a reason unknown to me, FCP's preference files (there's 3 of them) will sometimes become corrupted and need to be trashed. Usually the symptoms are things just not working as they did earlier, or weird issues like the 3 Way Color Corrector looks different than before ... stuff like that.
FCP Rescue is a freeware app (yes, you'll need to download it) that will create a backup set of preferences, thereby retaining all of your settings. Then when (not IF, but when) FCP's preferences become corrupted, you can run FCP Rescue to replace the bad set with a fresh new set.
Otherwise you can delete the files yourself (make sure FCP isn't open at the time) and the next time you launch FCP, it will revert back to the factory settings.

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
    Assuming a Managed Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Why is the Video Filter "Shift Fields" Automatically being added to my clips?

In the timeline, I've been noticing that FCP is randomly adding the "Shift Field" video filter to about 75% of all my clips in the timeline.
    Is this common?

I don't think in my case FCP has ever wrongly applied the filter when I just was editing from the Viewer to the Canvas. Only when copying footage from sequence to sequence, I discoverd problems.
By the way. You can select all the 'faulty' clips and choose Conform to Sequence from the menu, and al should be right...

Good points, all. Thanks for your contribution, Rienk.
"Conform to Sequence" is a function I have never used, did not know it even existed, thanks for that, too.

  • Motion + Video Filter order

I have two things going within one edited shot.
    1) I zoom into a still photo via Motion.
    2) I use the widescreen Matte video filter.
The problem is that it seems like Motion overrides the matte video filter, so that when
I zoom into the photo, the photo expands but so does the Matte filter, which I don't want.
I want the matte filter to stay put over the moving image
    Any tip?
    Thank you,
    MP

Remove the Widescreen Matte filter from the clip, leaving only the motion effect.
Once this is done, click on the clip on the timeline to select it.
Go to the menu Sequence > Nest Item(s), or type Option + C to nest the clip.
When the Nest box appears, click OK to create the nest.
Now the clip on the timeline has been converted to a self contained nest, so apply the Widescreen Matte to it.
You should see the Widescreen masking the motion.
If you want to make changes to the motion once the clip has been nested, double click on the nest and the original contents will appear. Make you changes and these changes will be reflected when you return to the sequence containing the nest.

  • Video Filter missing: AE.keylight 906?

    Hi,
I am a complete noob when it comes to editing video in Adobe. I've been looking for a solution to my problem in other places, but my attempts were futile.
    Here's what I did:
I edited a video clip in Adobe After Effects, dealt with the green screen using Keylight, then exported my work as an Adobe Premiere Pro Project. Once that was done, I tried opening the project in Premiere and a window popped up saying "Video Filter missing: AE.keylight 906." I clicked OK and found that Premiere does not show my edited green screen. It merely shows the original - I think I'm right in saying that is because the video filter is missing, as the message stated. How do I fix this? Help please!
    Thank you for your time.
    MP

My guess for the choppiness would be that you used the default uncompressed render settings from After Effects; this likely made a very large file that, unless you have a really stout and fast hard drive setup (e.g. RAID), you will not get real time playback. Uncompressed is good in that, well, it's uncompressed and therefore doesn't add any further image degradation, but it can make for a lousy editing experience, as you've found.
Depending on what your source footage is (you didn't mention this originally), and what your intended destination/delivery format is, you might be able to use different render/export settings from After Effects for a more playable file in Premiere. Later, you could rerender the composition to the uncompressed version and replace the original; this will give you better performance for further editing in Premiere, and then later will give you higher quality output. This is often referred to as proxy editing, and there are a couple of ways you can go about this, if it's something you want to attempt.
Regarding the loss of edits when moving from Premiere: there shouldn't be any loss of edit points, necessarily, but what you might be thinking of is the loss of transitions. Since Premiere Pro works with tracks and After Effects works with layers, the two programs have different methods of representing and creating transitions (e.g. dissolves). In Premiere, you can put two clips next to each other in the sequence on a single track, and add a dissolve between them; however, in After Effects, a layer can only contain one footage item, so to create a transition between two layers, they must overlap. There are analogs for certain transitions--a dissolve, for example, is just a change in opacity of one layer that is over another--but other more "fancy" transitions must be recreated more manually. In short, you shouldn't have to worry about the timing of your edit in Premiere changing when moving to After Effects, whether you use Dynamic Link or whether you simply copy and paste from Premiere into AE.
Hope that helps a bit more. And Mr. Brougham is my dad's name

  • Using You Tube video clips question:

After importing several clips from You Tube (of varying quality) to incorporate into an editing project, the clips look okay and play  full screen, in the "source" window, but when I put them in the timeline and play them in the "program" window, they are thumbnail size.  Why does this happen? I tried converting...but still no luck.

Re: Using You Tube video clips question:
The short answer here is, don't.  (Assuming that if it was yours in the first place, you'd have the original and not have to use the upload.)
And Bill, you should know better than to help someone violate copyright law.
yeah, i beg to differ on this. i have 100s of videos on youtube i did back when it first started before i saved my finished projects... (from 2005-2008 i would just record, edit, post, delete, because it was just random junk of me hanging out with friends, or just v-logging about stuff i needed to blow steam about) so one of these days i'll have to go through and download them and burn them for archives. • Can someone explain the FCE "Levels" Video Filter to me?

    Hi,
I need help with the FCE "Levels" Video Filter - I cannot find any documentation anywhere which explains precisely what this filter does and how to use it properly (Googling 'levels "input tolerance" "final cut express"' yields no results!!).
There are five sliders (Input, Input Tolerance, Gamma, Output and Output Tolerance) but playing with them, it's not obvious what they do or how they compare with the Photoshop "Levels" filter for still images.
In particular, I would like to map settings on a Photoshop "Levels" filter to settings on an FCE "Levels" Filter to achieve the exact same results in terms of adjusting the underlying images.
If this can't be done exactly, does anyone know of an FCE Filter which replicates the Photoshop Levels Filter.
    Can anyone help? Thanks.

It's not a very useful filter, and is not directly comparable to the Photoshop Levels filter. There is no histogram, which I consider essential.
Input & Input Tolerance lighten the image (they work together)
    Gamma adjusts midtones
Output & Output Tolerance darken the image (they work together)
Problem is, you have to drop the sliders off their default settings to get them to work at all. Start by dropping the Input and/or Output sliders to 20. Then adjust the companion Tolerance sliders down to see the effect.
I think you'll have more luck with the Color Corrector filter, which has sliders for Whites, Mids, Blacks & Saturation. Among other things, you will find the numeric levels sliders more comparable to the PS Levels controls.

  • Applying one video filter to multiple clips

How do I apply just one video filter to multiple clips on a timeline in FCP7? "Copy and paste attributes" does not give me the control to select just one filter to apply, for example there is a color corrector and sharpen filter in the copied clip and all I want to paste is sharpen.

Double click on a clip on the timeline that has the sharpness filter with the settings you want to apply to additional clips.
When that clip has loaded to the viewer, click on the filters tab. You will see a list of all the filters you have applied.
Now, on the timeline, select all the clips you want to apply that filter to (you can hold down the Command key while clicking on the clips to select multiple clips).
Once the destination clips are selected, move your cursor to the Viewer window Filters tab display, and click down on the Sharpness filter and drag it to any one of the selected clips on the timeline.
It will be applied to all clips.

  • Copy Video filter to multiple clips

How can I copy the color correction filter all the clips?
I can add the filter to all the clips by selecting them and going to Effects>Video Filter> Color>color correction and the filter show up in every clip. But when I adjust the white using the dropper it apply it only to the clip I have selected or have double clicked if all are selected.
I can Modify>copy filter> 2 ahead, but how do I apply that color correction to all the clips?
    Thanks

FCP Forum probably better spot for this one.
Anyways it should work across the board, that said, however, unless the clips are all pretty much matched well, color correction settings for one clip will not be the same as other clip, what I usually do is save the general settings as favorites, drop them on a clip then check each clip for any further tweaks

  • Video filter to desaturate red component

I have a video that has too much saturation in the red component, causing skin tones to appear excessively pink. In Photoshop, I can "Hue/Saturation", select "Reds", then adjust Saturation to -15 to get a good result. Is there an equivalent video filter in Final Cut? Everything I've tried affects the overall picture too much, typically causing a green/blue shift rather than desaturating the reds. TIA.

You can use a 3-way CC and use Limit Effect to narrow in on the reds, or you can use RGB balance and only adjust the reds. You can also use Color to get more control with curves and a proper levels and HSV control.

Yes, but it will be manual labour. Just go through all your clips and remove each instance where you have used it. Maybe it is shown in the timeline in a different color or with diagonal stripes through it, I don't know.
