Video Filters - Color effects

I want to keep one item in my shot in color and the rest of the clip in black and white. I know this is possible, but I don't know what tools or filters to use for it.
*Any help would be awesome.*

  • Video filters for FCP 5.1

    Hey everybody-
    I'm sort of new to FCP, and have a question about filters.
    I've tested out all the video filters in version 5.1, but none of them create the effects I am looking for-- little color, almost pale looking.
    Am I able to create this effect on FCP, or must I use a filter on my actual camera lens? I'm using a canon xl2...
    Below are some shots from movies that replicate the look I'm going for:

    Thanks for your help!

    Main Menu/Effects/Video Filters/Color Correctio/Color Corrector 3way - lower the 'Sat'. (chroma saturation)
    Here's a great tuturial that expands a bit on the processes involved.

  • Export video with Lumetri effects - 2 to 3 videos render fine, after that flickering, colored frames

    After I spent 45 minutes waiting to be transferred to to right department with the support chat, only to find out technical support isn't available during the hours I called, I am going to try this outlet to get some advice:
    I have about 50 video files to export, each 20 seconds to 2 minutes long. They all have Lumetri effects on them (I suppose that's what causes the problem).
    I can render 2, maybe 3 videos without problems. The next one might be fine for a while, but then all I get is strobelight frames, flickering, and different color frames. One time I even received a blue screen of death. I restart Media Encoder, add files to the queue, same thing happens. 2 - 3 will work, after that it exports garbage.
    I am using Premiere Pro CC to edit the video, Media Encoder CC to export it.
    The original footage is HDV 50i - 1440 px by 1080px - 1.333 pixelr ratio.
    Besides some dip to black and cross transitions the only other effect is a title layer with some static color effects on it, and 2 Lumetri effects (warm midtones and dream 1).
    I thought at first maybe it is because I encode in FLV, 1800 mbps, but also when I used uncomressed AVI with the same settings as the original footage the same problem occured.
    I have two ATI radeon HD 6950s 1GB in my pc hooked together with cross fire, 16GB ram, the project file is on a SSD, the raw footage on a HDD. AMD Phenom II x4 processor with 3.4 GHz.
    OS: Windows 7 64bit.
    I did update to the latest GPU driver last night - that didnt fix the problem.
    Since I noticed the fans becoming quite loud during rendering, I did put two Ice packs from the freezer on top of the case and pulled it away from the wall a little bit to allow for better cooling (and it did stay a lot cooler with the ice packs).
    I do also get funky looking frames inside Adobe Premiere after trying to watch the footage with the Lumetri filter for a while. I'll have to restart the program and it'll work fine.
    Any suggestions what I could do? Settings, or something? I dont want to attend to my machiene for so many hours, importing 2 video files at a time, having to review each of them for errors. I'd rather set it up once, and let them all render...

    @Peter Garaway:
    Thanks for the response.
    I use two Lumetri effects:
    Warm Midtones
    Dream 1
    Both applied directly to the clip of raw footage which is in the sequence that gets exported. There is actually one sequence, where I fixed some of the footage putting it into another sequence first, then the sequence into the final sequence that gets exported.
    All my clips have both Lumetri effects applied to them. The flickering took place randomly, but it would definitely get worse the more I attempted to render (the first 2 to 3 no problems, on the 3rd or 4th maybe a few flicker seconds in the middle, any more would be 100% flickering - if any flickering or only like a green solid...)
    Now Shrishti from tech support insisted the problem was within the sequence. And that kind of made sense, because once we successfully rendered one sequence, there would be no more trouble rendering it a second time, even if the program was already in flicker mode. And also for some reason while we were playing around with it when one sequence failed, even after restarting Media Encoder, it would fail again afterwards.
    However last night after it failed I would just try again, doing 2 at a time and it would be successful.
    Now I say it failed, but of course no errors no nothing... Just as in the result didn't look the way it was supposed to.
    Also I want to mention that especially when I kept it running after it failed (meaning you leave it runnning, producing only garbage) the fans of my computer kept running louder and louder. Not sure if it was the GPU or CPU. Rigth now it keeps rendering in Software mode and the fans are barely louder than under normal usage.
    I use the AMD catalyst driver which I downloaded from here:
    http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonaiw_win8-64.aspx
    While Shrishti was trying a couple of different settings at one time the screen went dark, as it came back on there was a message coming from the windows tray, saying the display driver had crashed, but recovered. One time I also received a bluescreen message, which I will try to attach to this post.
    well i guess it doesnt have too much information on there other than... what is that? a memory address?
    This happened I believe after the first attempt with the updated driver (I updated from 13.3 to 13.4 )

  • Video filters not working when applied to sequence clips

    I have looked through the forums and haven't found the solution to my problem. I am having problems with video filters on clips in the timeline. I have footage that needs color correction. In the viewer I created a 3 way filter for one clip, saved it, and applied to all clips in the browser. They all open corrected in the viewer. (I did this because i was reviewing the clips with my client).
    When I put the clip in the timeline it does not indicate it needs a render, the filter does not appear on the clip, but when I double click and open the sequence clip in the viewer the color correction tab is there. I've removed attributes and tried again several times, both using the menu with the clip selected, and by doulbleclicking the clip into the viewer and apply the filter there. The tab is always there but the filter does not appear on the clip. It only appears when the process is done to clips from the browser inthe viewer. I've checked the RT for unlimted, I've done a render all video, I've checked settings under the render tab and filters is checked. I've gone into another project and have the same problem in a different project with different clips. I had a recent project where I used a blur effect and it worked fine. My video is DV and my sequence settings are DV NTSC.
    I've run out of my ideas and comments from ither threads. What is my next troubleshoot? Should I delete preferecnes? I haven't done that with FCP, can I do it myself or use Rescue? Could that create other problems for me? Any other ideas?
    I work in Afghanistan and have no resources here for any Mac support besides books and forums.
    Thanks

    Hey Catrina
    Not sure what the issue is with your application of the 3-Way Color Corrector in the Browser. My guess, is that perhaps you only thought you applied the "saved" instance of the 3-way corrector but instead applied a default neutral instance of the corrector.  How did you save the correction you applied to the other instances?  A good method is, having applied and tweaked it as needed to a sample clip instance, you can drag a copy of it out of the clip's Filter tab and drop it directly into your Browser window.  To check, then double click that Browser instance of the corrector to open it in the Viewer window and see if has the corrections settings as expected and no the default ones. If so, go ahead and drag it to another clip instance in the Browser and then drag that clip to your sequence ... has the correction "stuck" bow? But while we figure it out, for now, why not just apply the saved correction directly to the clips in the sequence?  Regarding trashing your preferences ... download Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion.  Very straightforward to use.
    Cheers

  • Video filters screen setup

    Hello All,
    Help please...
    I have tons of filters/plugins. When I open my video filters screen (from the effects window), I always have to arrange my window so that I can see the majority of the filters. Is there a way to have this setup when launching FCE HD so that I don't have to always re arrange my video filters window?
    I have a custom setup that I am using with two monitors. Viewer, Canvas & Browser on one screen and Effects & timeline on my other monitor.

    You can make custom window arrangements of course, but they won't leave contents of windows open as I think you'd like. Might I suggest that it's more efficient to access the filters from the Effects menu rather than from the bins in the Effects tab of the browser.

  • Videos and special effects... (?)

    Okay I just found these.. they are great! But I was wondering... is anyone else having issues when filming either backlit or in the snow?
    My vids are... as best described... "mucky" looking!
    Is there not an option to increase the contrast or to 'vivid color' saturate the look?
    Thanks...
    ===== and for those that do not know about the special effects: =====
    Chapter 5 Using the Video Camera page:53
    Recording Video with Special Effects
    You can record video with a variety of special effects on iPod nano.
    Note: Video effects can only be selected before recording. iPod nano can’t add effects
    to or remove effects from recorded videos. You can’t change video effects settings
    while recording.
    To record video with special effects:
    1 Choose Video Camera from the main menu.
    2 Press and hold the Center button to display the video effects palette.
    3 Use the Click Wheel to browse the effects, and press the Center button to select one.
    The viewfinder screen appears with the selected effect.
    4 Press the Center button again to start recording with video effects.
    5 Press the Center button to stop recording.
    If you exit the Video Camera screen to play back your video, video effects are turned
    off. To resume recording with a video effect, repeat steps 2 through 4.

    Okay, why am I the only one who couldn't figure out how to get Special Effects with my video camera? The User Manual instructions: see pg 7, which is correct and pg 53-54 seem to be written incompletely; and (as I read them) indicate that with "Video Camera" on the screen, the center black button should be held down, thus providing the choices of Special Effects. WRONG. What does provide the array of Special Effects, is to select Video Camera (with the black center button), opening the lens of the camera. Before recording begins, hold the center black button down until the Special Effects are displayed, THEN select one and begin recording with it by quickly depressing the black center button. To end, again depress the black center button.

  • Video filters not working anymore in FCE 3.5.1

    My video filters (i.e. color correction, levels, RGB balance) don't seem to be working anymore. The only things I've done lately are upgrade to 3.5.1 and also OS 10.4.8. I believe this problem started happening after the 10.4.8 upgrade.
    I've been working with video for some time, but am relatively new to FCE. My workflow was to doubleclick to open the filter, make the adjustments to the filter settings, then drag the filter to the clip on the timeline. This was working just fine but just doesn't work anymore.
    Other things such as transitions work fine. LiveType and Soundtrack also seem fine.
    Anyone else have this problem, and how did they correct it? I have a project due tomorrow afternoon and would like to be able to fix ASAP.
    Thx in advance.

    Tom,
    First:
    I did trash my prefs, first thing. However, I might not have gone deep enough with this. I only trashed User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.FinalCutExpress.plist.
    I produce a 10-minute weekly announcements DVD and as such have very little downtime for my apps. The project I'm working on now is much more important, although only about 6 minutes, but it's crucial and I didn't want to risk downtime if I screwed up by trashing something else and possibly causing me more work. So I've had a feeling maybe more should have been trashed.
    Second:
    To better explain my incorrect workflow, I've created some movies you can find here:
    http://little-works.com/sepia_ex.html
    In this first example, I created an exaggerated color for a sepia tone, something I would never use. If you click the link and go on to the next page, you'll see where I apply that filter to the clip in the timeline (it's actually a still picture, not a video clip), and beside that, you'll see the unchanged result. BTW, I did render that still after I applied the green sepia filter.
    What happened when I first installed FCE was that any and all changes I made in this manner immediately presented themselves (in other words, they "worked"). Now I see no change at all.
    I burned a rough cut of this project yesterday and it looks fine, but I've worked as an art director for too many years and am very picky! I know it's fine for my audience but a) I know it could look better b) I want it to work right.
    I appreciate any and all help on this. I've been a Mac user for over 20 years, but am a newbie to FCE and am learning on the fly. So far my results have been great and very much appreciated by my audience(s), but I want to go much deeper into the program, as I am only touching the tip of the iceberg and don't want to develop bad habits from the get-go!
    Thx --

  • Water color effect does not work with solid fills?

    I have a solid color and apply the water color effect, though it doesn't do anything to the solid fill? I am applying the effect that is under Photoshop filters.  Is this only meant to be applied to bitmaps?
    Thanks.

    It works bvut you relly cannot appreciate it since it has no tonal range it is fr more obvious with an image but if the image is like all one color and one tone it will not make it look like you painted it by hand.
    You can definitely see it much as it is inteded to work on an image.
    This is a gradient filled rectangle with a feather and drop shadow and the watercolor effect.
    Here it is without being rasterized and withthe watercolor effect.
    Here it is withopt the watercolor effect and without being rasterize you can see the effect does little in the way of what you might expect it is even less obvious as a solid filled closed path.
    But on an image with has a larger tonal range you can see it much better.

  • FCP crashes when Video Filters folder is double clicked

    I edit in FCP 5.0.4 with 2 monitors and like to keep the Video Filters folder open as a separate window along with the Effects folder. However, my custom window layout with this setting has disappeared and when I try to open Video Filters, FCP crashes. I've used FCP Rescue to no avail and have re-installed FCP software.

    I am capturing to a Ciprico dual channel U320 array attached to a ATTO UL4D SCSI controller. I don't use the system for these data intensive captures all that often and sometimes I have no problem at all and other times I do. I noticed that the raw movies would play in the quicktime player ok without stalling or dropping frames so the issue seems to be with final cut. The last time I had this problem was with playing back 720p DVCProHD files and it would only play for a few minutes and then give a error message about dropping frames and suggesting lowering the number of audio tracks and changing the RT settings. I am thinking there must be a software conflict. We just installed FCP 6 and this was the first capture I did with it and had the same old problem right off the bat.

  • Making a browser tab of video filters

    I've forgotten how to do this. I want my video filters to be displayed as list in the browser window (in addition to the pull down menu, of course.)
    Thanks!

    Are you saying the EFFECTS tab isn't there? Command-5
    Are you saying you want the VIDEO FILTERs folder to be a TAB? Click and drag it up to the tab area. Or dbl click to open it as a window and drag it to the TAB area of the browser window.
    Good luck,
    CaptM

  • Is there a way to change a button's color effect using actionscript 3?

    I have an array of buttons that are just text and I would like to change the color effect to a blueish color when clicked/active.  I can obviously do this in the property inspector, but I would like to change it programatically.  Is there a class I can use to accomplish this?  Thanks!
    Jesse

    You could try setting the buttons 'opaqueBackground' property. If you assign it a color in hex, like 0x00FF00, it should color the button.
    myButton:Button = new Button();
    myButton.opaqueBackground = 0x00FF00;

  • Flash CS5 doesn't save advanced color effects on symbols

    In CS4 I'm used to inverting instances of my symbols by using a color effect:
    Style: Advanced
    Red: -100%  xR  +255
    Green: -100%  xG  +255
    Blue: -100%  xB  +255
    However, everytime I save these settings in a CS5 file, upon opening the settings have changed to:
    Red: 0%  xR  +255
    Green: 0%  xG  +255
    Blue: 0%  xB  +255
    Has anyone else had this problem? I'm on mac OSX with the 10.0.2 update installed.

    Had a couple students encounter the same issue.
    They had complex animations of graphic forms made from overlapping white and black pieces. Setting the blending mode to multiply allowed them to overlap the animation on top of imagery. Alternately some people needed to invert the black to white and blendmode:screen it onto darker textures and colors.
    This is easily accomplished through advanced color effect by multiplying everything by -100% and then offsetting by 255.
    Unfortunately these values aren't saved...
    You can use some code to do it, but this will get in the way of any timeline tweening. Our workaround was to drop any secondary animations of the graphic animation in a container and use code to modify _that_ clip.
    import flash.geom.ColorTransform;
    var ct = new ColorTransform();
    ct.redMultiplier = -1;
    ct.greenMultiplier = -1;
    ct.blueMultiplier = -1;
    ct.redOffset = 255;
    ct.greenOffset = 255;
    ct.blueOffset = 255;
    myClip.transform.colorTransform = ct;
    There might be another way around this that I missed, but it's a bummer that user entered values with observable and useful results aren't saved.

  • Can't see video in Color

    Hello there. I am using an iMac 17" with an ATI Radeon X1600 video card. When I import a video to color from FCP, I can't see any type of preview. I can see the video in the time line, however I can't see any scopes or waveforms. I already thought it was a problem because "Update UI During Playback" wasn't checked, but after I checked that, nothing changed.
    Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

    Not sure if this helps, but I had two NVIDAI GeForce 7300s installed. On a hunch, I pulled one out and the video and scopes suddenly appeared.

  • Why does my video shows interlacing effects

    I am importing HD videos from my Canon Legria HF200. On my user account the videos show interlacing effects, while on the other user account on the same iMac the videos are perfectly imported. We looked in preferences in order to find differences in settings but we could not find any.
    I guess I modified a setting somewhere on my account which my partner did not on his.
    I tried updating iMovie but it is already the most recent version (9.0.2).
    I tried reinitializing the settings but could not find how to do it.
    Can anybody help?
    Thanks a lot!

    You should check out this thread. It will explain why you are seeing interlacing in iMovie with the Legria HF200.

    This is a known issue with all Canon Legria (PAL) camcorders. If you do a search with the term Legria, interlacing and iMovie you will find a number of threads.
