Video Flicker & Creation of SD DVD (16:9) from a HDV edit...

Hi Everyone,
We have just completed a project on HDV.
Shot on HDV using Sony FX1E
HDV Edit using FCP HD
Video Card is Declink HD Extreme.
Problem 1:
Flicker while we render video:
When we render the timeline, the rendered output some times has a flicker that appears. It happens to everything, video, background animation done using motion anything you name. Then if we re-render the same, it goes off next time itself or sometime later. Not quite sure when and why ? We have to check to ensure no flickering is there before we step into the next stage.
The only problem that i could think of is. We have only 1 harddisk in the system. So the OS is in the same drive in which the project is also getting executed.
Problem 2:
Creation of SD DVD (16:9) after finishing HDV edit.
Compressor, the **** product is a royal waste or is that we do not know how to use it. or should we be using something else to make a SD DVD from a HDV edit.
We completed the project by taking a Uncompressed movie output and taking it into another Matrox sytem and created a SD DVD using Adobe Encore DVD. So the job got over, but what is the way to do the same in FCP & DVD Studio PRO.
Making a HD DVD is perfect, we tried that and it worked well.
We look forward to the comments from all you experts.
Thanks in advance.

Power MAC G5   Mac OS X (10.4)   Decklink HD Extreme - Video Card

One of the interesting and clever things about OSX is that data is not necessarily written to disk when you think it is - it first goes into a buffer and the buffer is written to disk at times of the OS's choosing. This allows the OS to handle multiple tasks etc. 'at the same time' - it stores things up and then milliseconds or perhaps seconds later writes them to disk. Remember that this includes all processes - and when OSX is running there might easily be literally hundreds of separate little OS-level programs running, all needing to do this or that with files on disk, not just the programmes you think you have running, like FCP or Safari.
The net result of this is that you have no control over when the disk is needed by the OS - and although this isn't a problem normally if you're using Safari or Word or something, when you are handling streaming media like video, it can be a very big problem. If you are playing a piece of video (which must maintain a constant data rate) and the system absolutely HAS to do something to or from disk, your video playback can take a hit, skipping a few frames. If this happened on a long playout to client it would be uncomfortable, but if it happened on your delivery master it could be horrendous.
If you keep your media on a separate disk, the problem disappears, as OSX can do whatever it needs without interrupting the flow of video off the other drive.
So don't so it, it's just waiting to bite you in the a55.

  • Flickering or shuddering in FCP videos on line and on DVD

    HI,
I have edited a 12 min video in HD on Final Cut Pro, with 1080i HDV on a MacBook Pro. I am trying to put videos on the web with Vimeo and Blip.TV and make a SD DVD on DVD Studio Pro, and so far all the videos flicker, especially in the parts with lots of movement. I have tried deinterlacing, and it does not make a difference. I have tried output into different forms and these all flicker when on blip tv or Vimeo video hosting websites.
Does anyone know what format and exact settings to export these videos from FCP in, and if I should use compressor or not?
I have tried posting a similar question and got no answers, and look on the web for answers and everyone seems to have a different answer. I need to finish this project asap and this final step is really holding me up.
    Thanks for your help!

Oh yeah, the video is HDV 1080i. But my final output needs to be in SD. I tried cutting and pasting the movie into a new SD timeline, but every clip needs to be resized, that would take forever!

  • Extract DVD videos, to author a new DVD using iDVD...?

I want to extract seveal chapters from a few DVDs, and then make a new DVD (using idvd) from these chapters.  What is the best method/video format I should use to extract the chapters to begin with, so here is minimal loss if quality in the final DVD? I was thinking of using Handbrake to extract chapters (from several DVDs) as mp4 files, and then use iDVD to author a new DVD from those files. But what format in Handbrake should I use to ensure best quality? Is Handbrake the best way to go anyway? Thanks, Fox.

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

    Hi Stan,
I just want the user to be able to run my video clips either on a

formats on a single disc. I am new to this and am not sure what format
is most widely used for standard DVD players. Thanks for your response

  • OS X Lion.  video flicker/scramble

OS X Lion. When dragging a file from Downloads folder to desktop I acquire a sudden video flicker/scramble on my display

Ahh, I'd forgotten about that feature since it is not really that easy to find and I always use MPEG Streamclip which does an outstanding job. However, I just tried it with a 10 sec intro I had (the only .mov I had available) and it did not work either. I'll be sending in a feedback - may i suggest you do the same.
In the meantime, try MPEG Streamclip - I've used it for a long time.

We facing a Video flicker issue on clips captured using VTR or clips taken as data to adobe premiere? Please advise how we can overcome this flicker issue. We have tried field change and flicker removal on adobe but seems nothing working.

Hi, a few questions that will help us to help you-
    Format/source of video being captured?
How is it coming in (analog, HDMI, etc)?
    Sequence/capture settings?
Where do you see flicker - in Premiere Program window, or on MXO2 video output?

You're better off by creating a data DVD through the Finder or elsewhere than attempting to use iDVD or similar software to create a video DVD. Locate the video files in the Finder and burn them as you would any other file.

  • Video flicker on Compaq Mini 311c - 1020EO in Win 8 (32bit)

    Hello,
Upgraded my Compaq Mini 311c - 1020EO to Win 8 32bit and all seems to work except VIDEO Flicker intermitantly.
Tried to load Nvidia driver ( 320.00 and 314.22 ) but when I run the installation the drivers cannot id the hardware as being compatible ??
Please help with some ideas !!

    Hello PALaz,
I am  surprised you don't have more issues with Windows 8 working correctly on your machine, since it is an older machine.  Have you tried to install the driver in compatibility mode?
Visit HP Support and get the Windows 7 drivers for the hardware you'd like to try.
Download the driver to your desktop (your driver is here)
Allow the extraction to complete but close the installation process when it comes up.
Navigate to the C:\swsetup\ folder.  You will see your driver listed here.  They usually have a name like "sp56737".  Navigate to this folder.
Within your driver's folder you will see a "setup.exe" file.  Right click this file and select Properties.
    Navigate to the "Compatibility" tab.
Click the box that says "Run this program in Compatibility mode for..." and also select Windows 7 from the drop down menu.
Check the box which says "Run this program as administrator" at the bottom
Save these changes and double-click the "setup.exe" to begin the install.
Once the install completes reboot your PC and verify the functionality of the piece of hardware.
Please let me know if this helps.
    Good luck!

  • Compressing large video files on to a dvd

How can I put 10 GB of raw video footage on a 4.7 GB dvd? What kind of compression would I use to keep good quality?

As pointed out, if you want a video DVD, then use 90 Minutes Best, and you will want to compress your audio to an AC3 file. Then you have to bring both into DVD SP to actually author a disc. You cannot just files on a disc to create a video DVD.
If you want to send files to someone else so they can edit the video, then you do not want to compress the video at all. If you compress the files, then someone edits it and then compresses again (to DVD, web, etc.) then the video will be double compressed. This always results in the loss of quality. Never compress video you want to edit, only compress the final output.
That being said your file will not fit on a DVD. Two choices, use a portable hard drive, or use Toast to automatically segment the video onto as many discs as needed. The person who you give the discs to (Mac or PC) can then re-combine the segments on their hard drive using a program that is automatically burned onto the discs.

  • How do I mute the sound from the video camera when burning a DVD

Hi there.  I'm a new user of Elements 8.  I have compiled some clips and added a soundtrack to the movie,  When you preview the file you don't hear the sound from the video camera but when I burn it to a DVD you still hear the video background.  How do I burn the DVD without the background sound from the video camera?  On the DVD I only want to hear the soundtrack I added.
    Thank you,
    Doug

Thanks guys.  Both options worked.  Dowside to deleting audio (option I went with) appears to be that you lose the audio forever.  So if I ever wanted to bring the audio back I wouldn't be able to.
You are partially correct in that the Audio is no longer on your Timeline. It is still in your Project Panel, and you can move it back to your Timeline if ever needed. The complete removal from the Timeline is why I work with the Audio Mixer in cases like this. Also, on could alter the Gain on a Clip by Clip basis.
With using the audio mixer it appeared I had to mute each clip separately.  When I highlighted all the clips and selected mute for audio 1 it wouldn't mute all of the selected clips.
The Audio Mixer works at the Track-level, and not at the Clip-level. That is why I use it so often - one click, or slider adjustment affects the entire chosen Track. If it did not work at a Track-level for you, something is wrong. Now, if one has Clips on different Tracks, then Muting of all of those would be required, or one would have address things on a Clip-level basis.
Any way to use the audio mixer to mute the clips in mass?
See above for how it should work, and also the exceptions - Audio on several Audio Tracks.
Good luck, and remember that your Audio still resides in the Project Panel, should you ever need it again.

  • More then 2hrs to compresse 60minutes VIDEO file in MPEG 2 DVD BEST QUALITY

On my Dual 2.5 GHz 4GB RAM, is this normal ?

It took 3h30 minutes. Will I see a difference using DVD Fastest Encode ? For exemple, can it be possible to have a problem like the DVD freezing in some DVD player because I'm using a faster Encoding setting like DVD Fastest ?
This is my workflow for now:
-Export from FCP, AUDIO ONLY current settings, self contained.
-Export from FCP, VIDEO ONLY current settings, self contained.
-Import to Compresor the self contained files and compress the audio file using Dolby 2.0 before sending to DVDSP.
-Import to Compresor the self contained video file and compress using DVD Best quality MPEG2 2-pass before sending to DVDSP.
I do NOT export from FCP directly to Compressor.

I recently had some 8mm film transferred to DVD. I am trying to edit the film clips using Premier Elements 4.0. so I can reburn the films on a single BluRay disc. Some of the film clips copy into the project but others don't. I tried copying the VOB filed onto my hard drive and then changing the file extensions on the VOB files to MPEG but this was no help. Some of the VOB files contain numerous film clips but my software does not appear to be able to recognize them as such. I need to know if replacing my old Premier Elements with the new Version 13 would solve this problem or not. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    What do you have now.....
What computer operating system do you have?
We can go into the finer points of source and your intentions, but for now it would appear that you are using SD 4:3 source media to get to a HD 16:9 result. Lots to discuss in this regard.
What was given to you on the DVD disc? DVD-VIDEO 4:3 or something else?
If DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, you should expect to find on the disc a folder named VIDEO_TS. That is your target for your video files.
If you were given a DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, then all you want from it are the video files, specifically
VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, and so on through that series until possibly getting to
VTS_02_1.VOB, and so on. How many files you have beyond the VTS_01_1.VOB file will depend on the size of the DVD-VIDEO.
Does the above scenario apply to you?
The alternative might be someone giving a DVD disc (data disc) which contains just the VTS files mentioned which were copied from
the VIDEO_TS Folder. So, you do not get the whole VIDEO_TS Folder, just the essential video files. Does this scenario apply to you.
I see no need to replace your Premiere Elements 4 with a later version unless you have a huge project and need a later version that will be a 64 bit application running specifically on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit computer.
Consider...Premiere Elements 4 and if you have DVD-VIDEO on DVD....
    1. Place the DVD disc in the burner tray
    2. Open Premiere Elements 4 and set the project preset for NTSC DV Standard (assuming you are working in a NTSC setup)
    3. Go to
    Get Media
"DVD, Digital Camera, Mobile Phone, Hard Drive Camcorder, Card Reader"
"Adobe Premiere Elements - Media Downloader" and its Advanced dialog.
Set the Source in the latter dialog for the drive which has your DVD disc inserted in its tray
You should see your VTS_01_1.VOB thumbnail in the "Adobe Premiere Elements - Media Downloader" Advanced dialog.
With this VOB selected, click on Get Media to get the file from there into the project.
    Should work fine.
Complications may be involved if the people who processed your footage gave you something other what is described above.
Please review and consider, and then we can plan our project strategy accordingly.
    Thank you.
