Video format for ipod classic 30gb

Hi,
I've just bought a music video from the iTunes Store, but, when I try putting it on my older click wheel 30gb Ipod Classic, iTunes tells me it wasn't copied to the Ipod because it cannot be played on the Ipod. I checked the music video's format and found out it was m4v. Could that be the source of the problem? If so, do I have to convert it to mp4 or something similar? And how do I do that?
Any advice or help?

A 30GB iPod that plays video is a 5th gen iPod.  NOTE:  The 4th gen "classic" iPod with color display may also be 30GB, but those iPods cannot play videos.
Video format may be an issue, because the first iPod with video capability had a lower limit for video resolution. And if the video is "HD," that video is too high-res for even a new iPod classic.
NOTE:  You can convert videos in iTunes using the command
menu bar -> File -> Create New Version -> Create iPod or iPhone Version
but that command is disabled for videos that use DRM (copy protection).  A purchased video (such as a musiuc video) from the iTunes Store uses DRM.  For purchased videso that are HD, you may be entitled to also download the SD (standard definition) version at no cost.  The SD version may play on your iPod.

  • Apple developer notes on video format for iPod, Apple TV and iPhone

I have been doing a bit of searching on information for converting video for the Apple TV and came across this web-page which contains technical information of converting video for the iPod, Apple TV and iPhone.
If you are after information on bitrates, b-frames, levels, profiles, low-complexity, etc. then this may help:
    http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2007/tn2188.html
What is interesting to note, whilst 5Mbps is the maximum bitrate, the Apple TV supports spikes up to 12Mbps.
Happy reading and please feel free to add more links to useful information on the video format for the Apple TV.

I have downloaded the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - Trailer #2 .mov file and this streams quite happily on the Apple TV. This has a total bitrate of 6505Kbps and an audio bitrate of 192Kbps @ 48KHz and video 23.98fps @ 1280x544.
So, according to the Apple TV spec., the audio is well above 160Kbps and the video bitrate is well above 5Mbps. So why does it play at all on the Apple TV let alone stream without stuttering? Maybe its because the video height is 544 rather than the full 720, but why does the Apple TV get to see it?
I don't know the answers, just offering this as an example of a video that is freely available for anyone to try out which clearly exceeds some of the maximum specs for the Apple TV.
Has anyone found or got anything that beats this?

  • How to change video format for iPod touch

please can anyone tell me how to convert my .avi files to the format that will play on my iPod touch!
I've managed to convert a couple in iTunes but the rest of the files won't import to iTunes so I can't use that converter!
I've also tried something called MPEG streamclip but that keeps telling me there's an invalid frame rate and won't work!
Any ideas please, the only reason I bought the 32gb was so I could watch my videos!
    Thanks

On a MAC use iSquint to do your conversion. Get it from version tracker. It's free and fantastic. It will also convert flash (.flv) and .mov files.
One thing to remember is that the default is video scaled for the iPod Classic/video which is smaller than the iPoT. So the settings should be "Optimize for iPod" Quality "High" "H.264 Encoding" then select "advanced" enter 480 in the width and whatever pixel height is required to keep the aspect ratio the same as the original .avi movie. e.g.:
    496 x 272 = 480 x 264
    512 x 208 = 480 x 196
    512 x 216 = 480 x 203
    512 x 288 = 480 x 271
    528 x 288 = 480 x 260

  • Video Player for Ipod Classic

Does anyone know if there are any portable video players compatible with the new Ipod Classics? I got a good deal on a Sonic Impact V55 player, but when I received it I soon found out that my new 80gb classic would not work on it. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Bruce

Nope, thanks MPAA. See here: http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/news/comments/apple-locks-tv-out-in-new-ipods-b reaks-video-add-ons/
The Apple Store does list the MyVue goggle things as compatible, so you can watch videos on your ipod, look like lawnmower man and get a wicked headache all at the same time.

  • Convert WMV to a video format for iPod?

    Hello,
I have a WMV recording of a Microsoft Live Meeting event. It is 1.5 hours in length, about 31MB and 4 fps. I need to convert it to a video format that can be played on a video iPod. When I try to export as MP4 from Premiere Pro CS4, the file size really balloons. What settings can I use to keep the file size similar to that of the WMV?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
You could try using the Apple iPod Video Small preset in AME under H.264 format after customizing the Target Bitrate and Maximum Bitrate. Try reducing these bitrate values. You could use the Estimated File Size that shows up at the bottom of the AME Settings UI as a rough guide to the final file size.To change the bitrate values, first launch AME Settings UI by clicking on the Settings button in AME batch after selecting the batch item.
    Hope this helps. Thanks.

  • I have an IPOD Classic 30GB.  I thought the battery was not recharging so I bought a new battery and had it installed.  The device will come on and has a message on the screen "Please wait.  Very low battery."

I have an IPOD Classic 30GB.  It would not stay on but a few seconds so I thought the battery was not recharging and bought a new battery.  I charged the new battery overnight and when I turned it on I could see the apple for only a few seconds and it would go off.  I tried the trouble shooting suggestions and reset the device. The screen is frozen with the message "Please Wait.  Very low battery." I also thought it might be a problem with the display but since it is on now, I'm not sure what is going on with it.

There are several types of iPods that are "30GB," 3rd gen ("dock connector"), 4th gen ("click wheel" or "photo"), and 5th gen ("video").  This documents shows the iPod models

Which one is your iPod?  Do you use a Mac or Windows PC?  Do you have a power adapter?

  • PLEASE help: video on new iPod Classic 160gb

    Hi all,
I would be really grateful if someone could help me. I was lucky enough to receive a shiny black 160gb iPod Classic for Xmas to replace my old 3rd Gen one.
However I'm having a bit of trouble with videos. I have downloaded some video podcasts via iTunes store that have synced to my pod and play fine. However I have just downloaded some TV shows from the internet - they play in iTunes and are listed in my iPod under"My Devices" but I just can't find them on the pod.
    Any ideas????

Hiya and thanks for your respose!!
I downloaded them from a torrent site but they did say they were specifically formatted for iPod use - the file format is MPEG4.
However, I've also tried downloading a video podcast from directly from iTunes (again in MPEG4 format) that hasn't synced to my pod either.
It seems the only video I've managed to sync is a podcast I downloaded about a year ago and two music videos I had from importing CD's.
Any further help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • I added 2 cd's to itunes 11, I have an ipod classic 30gb, how do I export the albums from itunes to my ipod?

Hi Ihave an ipod classic 30gb, i imported 2 cd's into itunes on win xp pro sp3, how do I export the albums from itunes to my ipod?

It depends on how you previously added content to the iPod?  Or are saying the iPod is currently empty, and you want to add these albums to it?
If you want to sync your entire iTunes music library to the iPod, which may or may not be just these two albums at this point, you can do the following.  Select the iPod in iTunes, so that you see the iPod's "management" screen.  If you are using the latest iTunes 12, you do this by clicking the "device button" on the horizontal bar that goes across the iTunes window (near the top).  The button's icon looks like the connected device.
On the iPod's screen, there is a sidebar (along left side of window).  In the sidebar, under Settings, click Music.  To the right, the iPod's Music settings screen is shown, where you tell iTunes how to sync songs to the iPod.  Near the top, there is a checkbox for Sync Music.  Check that box to enable automatic syncing.  NOTE:  If that box is not already checked, checking it will replace the iPod's existing content with content from your iTunes library.  Any songs on the iPod now that are not in your current iTunes library will be lost.
Below that setting, there are two options for how to sync songs.  30GB is a decent amount of storage space, so if your entire iTunes library can fit on your iPod, you can use the option to sync Entire music library.  Then click Apply.  iTunes syncs your entire iTunes music library to your iPod.  Going forward, any changes to your iTunes music library (such as adding more albums or songs) will sync automatically to the iPod, the next time it is connected (or when you click Sync if already connected).
If your situation is different, please reply back with more details.

  • Windows won't format my iPod classic 160 GB

Hi, I’m having trouble formatting my iPod classic 160GB.
It started after I plugged it into a computer I don’t really use to put some new music on it, and then when I went to use the iPod the next morning I had to choose language and everything was gone. It worked fine the night before with both the new music and the old, but now it says in the settings of the iPod that I have 0 KB free, even though there’s nothing on it (all the space is filled with “other”, and I don’t know what that means).
When I connect it to the computer it says I have to format it to use it, but when I try to do so Windows can’t finish formatting. It also just shows up as “portable disc (E:)” instead of the name I’ve given it. I’ve tried putting it in disk mode and then it shows up with the correct name, saying I have 117 GB out of 148 GB left to use. Which is correct, but windows still won’t format it, or scan it for errors in error checking. If I try checking for errors when it’s not in disk mode a window pops up saying that they can’t access the disk.
I bought this iPod last year so it’s not old. I really have no clue what do to from here and I would appreciate help so much!!

  • IPod classic 30gb not holding charge

As stated above I have an iPod classic 30gb. After a few mins of removing from charger the iPod dies. Is there any way the battery can be replaced.?

You can hope that when it dries out that it will work. You shouldn't have turned it on yet....so let it sit for a few days and then see if it works. Other than that there isn't much you can do.
