Video Format for mac?

Hey everyone i just got my new MBP. And i was wondering what formats i need to have my videos in to play and edit them on my mac... my mac grabbed alot of my videos that i had from before that were i believe quicktime format. but i have new ones now in AVI that wont play on my mac or show up in the I-video library
Can anyone tell me what format these need to be converted to and possibly a free converter that i can use.. (Widows or Mac)
Thanks
DJ

What, exactly, are the videos you are trying to convert?
If they are MPEG2 videos (eg from a DVD) then you will need to get the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component ($20, downloadable from Apple) in order to play and convert them, even with MPEG Streamclip. Because of the error message you said you got, it sounds to me like you have some MPEG2 videos.
If you are converting videos on a Mac you want to convert them to QuickTime, not to AVI. If the videos are standard def, then you want to convert them to QuickTime using the Apple DV/DVCPRO NTSC codec (you will see this in MPEG Streamclip). If the videos are hi def then you want to convert them to QuickTime using the Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC). Don't try stuffing an AIC video into an AVI file, it isn't going to work, as you found out.

  • Best video format for mac and pc

    Hello,
I recently embeded an mpeg video, flv, mp4, and swf video file to my web page. I then asked several pc users to go to my page and see if they could view the animation clips. They were were able to view all clips, but the mpeg and flv clips automatically downloaded to their computer. I don't want that to happen. The mp4 did not download, and it worked as well.
How do I stop this from happening? I ask becuase it seems flv is used by mac and pc users alike, and I think I may use said format.
What is the most widely used video format by both mac and pc users?
... should I just stick with mp4 since it worked without down loading?
    rekh
    code i used...
    <iframe width="410"
      height="357"
      src="http://www.mysite.tv/myfolder/myfile.mp4"
      frameborder="0"
      allowfullscreen=""></iframe>

Colin has pointed you in the correct direction.
I'll bet you're using just plain text "links" to your files. That method by-passes the browser plug-in and can cause issues (especially on Windows).
You need solid html code that gives the browser plug-in all of the needed instructions.
Another thing that may have happened is that your fast start files have lost their fast start abilities. This happens with any fast start file that is then edited and uses a regular "save". Save As will restore the fast start feature (even in files that do not normally have it).
AVI is dead. Do not use it.
Many WMP formats (codecs) are not yet ported to the Mac OS so that delivery container should also be ruled out.
H.264 Video codec (default in most Tiger app exports) also requires the viewing machine (Mac or PC) have QuickTime version 7 installed.
Since not all machines can install QT version 7 (requires 10.3.9 or Win 2000 or XP) maybe you should rule it out, too.
    So.
    What are we left with?
Maybe QuickTime format using MPEG-4 Video codec and AAC audio?
They would only require QuickTime version 6 be installed. Since version 6 has been around for over 5 years it may be your best option.
But you're still going to get complaints from PC viewers.

  • Pinnacle Video Capture for Mac

After talking with a bunch of salesmen (considering getting a DvD writer), I took the advice of someone in the Apple Store and bought a Pinnacle Video Capture for Mac to copy my laserdiscs. It was $100 before tax, and didn't do stuff I don't plan on doing anyway. I did spend another $25 to get an S-video cable.
I installed the software and connected it up to my LD. I started capturing the movie, and selected S-Video (although in the small window they showed, I didn't see any difference between that and video out. I selected a max time from a limited selection, and let it record.
After a while, I went downstairs and saw that the audio and video were not synchronized at all. I let it continue.
After a while I came down again, and the movie was finished, so I stopped it. I found the MP4 - it was in the iTunes movie directory, and played it in iTunes. I fast-forwarded it to near the end, the voice and video were way off-set.
I haven't tried burning this yet.
Quicktime player doesn't think this is a valid movie file. I selected "open with" and "other" and the recommended applications had iMovie greyed out.
Why in the world would the audio and video record at different speeds?
Do I have to buy software to edit the movie down to the correct size?
    My Mac has:
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 4 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: IM71.007A.B03
    SMC Version: 1.21f4
I noticed the Pinacle Video Capture program was still running, so I tried to quit it, and got a window asking for my administrator ID and passsword to allow Pinnacle Video Capture to make changes. Why?

The audio drifted out of sync because the Dazzle doesn't support locked audio. For short videos (say, under 10 minutes) this won't be very noticeable but when you capture longer videos it becomes progressively worse over time.
What do you want to do with your Laserdisk copies? Watch them on your iPod? Edit and/or burn to DVD?
A device like the Canopus ADVC-110 will do the video/audio conversion properly, keeping the audio and video in sync regardless of the length of your video. It converts to DV, not to MP4, and you would use it with iMovie or Final Cut (not iTunes). However you can export your video from iMovie or Final Cut to iPod/AppleTV formats.
The Dazzle device will not work directly with iMovie or Final Cut.
ps. If all you really want to do is transfer your Laserdisc videos to DVDs, it will be a whole lot faster & simpler to get a DVD player/recorder that has analog inputs and record directly to DVDs. There are many brands & models to choose from and many good ones are as inexpensive as the $100 you spent on the Pinnacle converter.

Is this happing because the external is formatted to PC and not mac?
    Yes that is correct.
Will I need to get a mac external hard drive if I wish to continue to save my documents like this?
If you no longer use a PC you could format this drive for the Mac. However be aware that formatting a drive will erase all the data on it. So you would need someplace to copy the data off this drive to while you did the re-format and then you could copy the data back.
You could get another drive, format it for the Mac and copy the data to it. Then re-format the original drive and use it as a backup drive. Always good to have backups.
Post back with the drive type and size of the current drive, if you are doing backups now and how and if you still need to access this drive from a PC.

  • Best video format for converting DVD to NAS for widely sharing

Summary: The article shows you with an easy workaround for
copying DVD to NAS for streaming by ripping DVD to NAS friendly video
    format on Mac and Windows
I recently purchased a NAS to store all my music/photos etc on. I
can stream stuff to my iPhone/iPad using the NAS software. What I want
to do is rip all my DVDs (over 400) to my NAS, but I’m not sure which
format to do it in, to play nice with my Apple TV2, Xbox 360, iPhone,
iPad etc. I wanna get some advice as to what format to rip in and what
    software to use?
Learn some tips from online, I got know that to copy dozens of DVD movies to NAS,
you need to get the content off the DVD disc as a protection-free and
easily readable element for NAS. In this case, at the first place
powerful third-party software for backup DVD to NAS is what you need.
There are many, many DVD ripping tools on the market. I’ve tired a pile of them.
    Brorsoft DVD Ripper
is the best one I’ve tried yet. It is capable of ripping DVD to MP4,
AVI, MKV for NAS streaming with no quality loss; it also enables you to
copy DVD main movies for backup onto NAS in .vob format. And what I’ve
learned is that MP4 would be one best target format for it is fully
compatible with nearly all media devices including iPad, iPhone, PS3,
Apple TV, etc. If you are running on Mac OS X, turn to  DVD Ripper for Mac. If you haven’t got the software, download it now and let’s start the conversion.
Ripping and copying DVDs to NAS
    1. Launch the DVD ripping program for NAS devices . Then
click "Load DVD" to import the DVD files you want to convert. To select
the subtitles you like, simply click Subtitle and select the one you
prefer. P.S. Before start the conversion, you can choose to backup DVD mian movies.
    2. Click Format bar and choose your desired format. To store
hundreds of DVD's on NAS, you can rip DVD to .mp4, or .avi, .mkv, etc
compressed format. And click Settings bar, you can adjust the level of
compression to suit the quality you want.
Tip: If you like, you can click “Settings” to change the
video encoder, resolution, frame rate, etc. as you wish. Keep in mind
the file size and video quality is based more on bitrate than resolution
which means bitrate higher results in big file size, and lower visible
    quality loss, and vice versa.
    3. Press the "Convert" button to start ripping DVD for NAS streaming.
After the conversion, click Open button to find the output files.
Make sure the wireless network connection is accessible among the NAS
and Apple TV, PS3, HD TV or other media players. Then just enjoy the
high quality DVD movies anywhere anytime.

I've always found encoding with Handbrake and choosing the Apple TV2 preset is an excellent place to start and video encoded using that preset will work on my iPhone 4, 4S and iPad 2.
If the files encoded using that preset are too big for one's taste they can always encoded at a lower average bit rate rather than using the default 'Constant Quality' of 20.
Later on I'm sure the Handbrake group will have an AppleTV '3' preset supporting the 1080p format supported by the ATV3 and iPad '3' but using such a preset would not create a file usable on the iPad 2 or the iPhones.

  • Any experience with Aunsoft Video Converter for Mac

I have a Panasonic Lumix FZ100 camera, and I am unable to download my High Definition movies from the camera to my Mac.  I have tested out the Aunsoft Video Converter.  Is this the best programme?
I can also get this bundled with a DVD ripper.  Will this work on my Mac, and can it convert or rip foreign DVDs (actually PAL but formatted for UK)?
    Ann-Marie Wasley

I am using some Aunsoft programs. Hope my information helps somehow.
The Aunsoft Video Converter for Mac is a nice program. I usually use it to convert my videos (AVCHD .mts format) that shot with my Panasonic camcorder to the Apple ProRes format for editing in Final Cut Pro X. Sometimes I also convert differnt videos to the MOV or MP4 format to watch on my idevices (iPad, iPhone, Apple TV, Macbook). The converter program worked nicely.
It seems your Panasonic Lumix FZ100 camera also shoots video in the AVCHD (.mts) format. If you want to convert your video footages with Aunsoft converter you need firstly transfer the video files from your camera to Mac using the USB cable that comes along with your camera. Then load the videos from your computer into the video converter. The .mov

  • AVC - Any Video Converter for Mac

    Hello,
I've been in search of a "complete" replacement for (now discontinued) VisualHub for converting "many"
video formats to the ones I use most frequently (DV, DVD, iTunes to name just 3).
Today, I found "Any Video Converter for Mac"
<http://www.any-video-converter.com/mac-software.php> but want to see if there are other Mac users out there, uh, using it. It's shareware: $44.95, so I'd like to know if it's worth the money b4 plunking down that much cash.
Anybody here who has a "review" on this app would be helpful.

    Brie,
Just the 3-minute clip length on the demo. This prevents testing it on full length videos when the original cannot be edited "natively" by Mac OSX. That is, when you have a five minute clip in .wmv format, no editing means the clip can't be snipped to less then 3 minutes for testing with AVC.
The obvious: Flip4Mac can be used for this but that's another $29.95 (or more- it's tier priced based on editing capabilities) on top of the $44.95 for the AVC app.
The other thing which caused me to ask for reviews by users of the paid version is that some formats required downloading additional codecs from the developer of AVC. I know from experience that installing codecs "willy-nilly" can lead to system instability. So it's either pay for the version of Flip4Mac which can edit the wmv type files or take a chance that the additional codec from the developer will let me edit a longer than 3-min. wmv file (with the aforementioned risk).
This is a relatively new developer, and I am not an early adopter. Logically, I thought there might be one of those early adopters out there who could point the way for the rest of us (video editors). The obvious goal: making more video stock available for use in iMovie projects.

Since I upgraded to 10.9.5, my macbook no longer recognizes my external  hard drive. How do I fix this?  External hard drive is a 1TB Toshiba formatted for mac.  Worked fine until latest upgrade.

Solved the problem by dumping my external HD onto another computer. Re-formatting and re-installing the data.  Not what I wanted to do but it solved the problem.

  • IPod is formatted for windows but i need it formatted for mac

i just got my iPod a couple days ago used from best buy and hooked it up from my mac not aware that it was formatted for windows. when i try to restore my iPod it just freezes up my computer. do i really need it formatted for mac in order to get good performance?

Right. If you restored it in Windows the iPod will still be formatted for Windows.
Now see if you can restore it on your mac.
Also, know that Windows-formatted iPods work fine in Mac OS X. The only "problem" is that you cannot update the iPod's software on your mac if another software version is released. You would have to do that through Windows.
If you plan on using your iPod with both Operating Systems, you may want to keep it formatted for Windows.

  • What Download Video Program for Mac is as Good as Orbit is for Windows??

12/29/2008. Friends, I have searched and searched and searched for a video download program for Mac that will download videos from almost any website besides just YouTube and such, but to no avail. The latest OrbitDownloader 2.8.1 for Windows is excellent and will do this for Windows on a PC. What similar download video program for Mac will perform as excellently or almost as good?? I've tried Firefox's Video Downloader Helper but can not get it to work. I've tried Mori but don't know how to get it to work. I've tried Perian but again don't know how to get it to work, I just get a window that says "Uninstall." I will really appreciate finding such a program for Mac, for my iBook G4 which has Leopard OS X 10.5.4 and WiFi. Many thanks. Chuck Y., Chicago

1/2/2009. Thank you all for your help. I love this wonderful feature I find about Apple Discussion Forums, so many friends. I did not know about Perian's instructions until you informed me. [www.perian.org/#watch] I'm glad that I gave the example of "POV Inheritance," because it is somewhat complex. First a person must locate the POV Inheritance website. For Perian, to go into Windows Activity at that point shows only that line. No one told me that I must click the wee arrow to the left of that line. Then a long drop list appears. But none of those help. So one must return to and on the website click "Watch the streaming video online" or ". . . now." That brings up another sub-website on which a person must click "Watch the Full Film." Then one can choose between five "chapters," and go into Windows Activity again. Then appears "net + public affairs player: video." Then one clicks the small arrow on the left of "net+ public affairs video" and sees 17 selections. All except one are small kbs. One has a large megabyte file. Select and Command + C that, and then go into Windows Downloads and Command + V [paste]. Then the download begins. And the person must do that for each of the five chapters. The other option is not to click any of the "chapters" but instead click "Watch the Full Film," and then click Windows Activity and then the small arrow left of "net + public affairs : video" and on the drop down list appear, among many, the five separate chapter files [the ones with large megabyte files], and continue as per a few lines above. The Perian procedure is simple. Getting to the line to be downloaded, in this case, is more complex, and so a good example from which to learn.
RealPlayer 11.0.0 [or 11.0.1] and its RealPlayer Downloader work very well too and may be simpler.
Thank you all and Happy New Year cruising with your Apple Macs. C. Yopst, Chicago

  • ATI 5770 1GB Video Card For Mac Pro dvi hdmi cable

I am sending video signal over a 50FT HDMI To DVI from my Mac Pro (3,1) via ATI 5770 1GB Video Card For Mac Pro (5.0 GT/s) (181062917108) and I cannot get a constant signal to my TV. The signal stays on for a few seconds or several hours or my TV (Samsung) says there is no signal or I get just a gray static screen.
I never had a problem before with my previous video card the 512MB nVidia GeForce 8800GT with a 25ft long cable. Any ideas people?

A cable of about 5 meters (16 ft) can be manufactured to Category 1 specifications easily and inexpensively by using 28 AWG (0.081 mm²) conductors.[114] With better quality construction and materials, including 24 AWG (0.205 mm²) conductors, an HDMI cable can reach lengths of up to 15 meters (49 ft).[114]
    from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI
You may need a higher-quality cable or a lower resolution for your display to make this work without an HDMI Repeater.

I've had a 1TB external hard drive for the last year and never had a problem with it until now. Suddenly, it is showing as read-only, however, it's formatted for Mac. How am I able to fix this? Do I have to re-format it?

Usually that means the drive is malfunctioning. Back up all data on it, if you haven't already done so, then erase and restore. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it.
