Video Format - iPod vs. Apple TV

I'm not sure where to post this topic because it spans several categories. But here goes anyway.
I love the idea that we can download content from the ITS and play the same file on either the iPod or the Apple TV.
However, when I create my own video, such as through Quicktime or iMovie, I have to create two separate files, one for the iPod and one for the Apple TV.
Does anyone know how we can get around this? It's a tremendous waste of space and time.
Thank you very much.

You don't need to create two separate files. Just as you can play the files you download from itms on both your ipod and your tv, so you can play the ipod files you create yourself for the ipod on your tv.
Of course you need to be aware of the difference in quality between files for the ipod/tv and those created for the ipod only, but this difference applies to both files you have downloaded and files you have created yourself equally. If you are happy with the quality of the downloads over the tv, there should be no reason you shouldn't be happy with your own ipod conversions over the tv either.

    hi Murali!
there's some info on that in this document:

that FAQ is actually a bit out of date. as of itunes 6.0.2.23, some files can also be converted by itunes. see:

  • Apple developer notes on video format for iPod, Apple TV and iPhone

I have been doing a bit of searching on information for converting video for the Apple TV and came across this web-page which contains technical information of converting video for the iPod, Apple TV and iPhone.
If you are after information on bitrates, b-frames, levels, profiles, low-complexity, etc. then this may help:
    http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2007/tn2188.html
What is interesting to note, whilst 5Mbps is the maximum bitrate, the Apple TV supports spikes up to 12Mbps.
Happy reading and please feel free to add more links to useful information on the video format for the Apple TV.

I have downloaded the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - Trailer #2 .mov file and this streams quite happily on the Apple TV. This has a total bitrate of 6505Kbps and an audio bitrate of 192Kbps @ 48KHz and video 23.98fps @ 1280x544.
So, according to the Apple TV spec., the audio is well above 160Kbps and the video bitrate is well above 5Mbps. So why does it play at all on the Apple TV let alone stream without stuttering? Maybe its because the video height is 544 rather than the full 720, but why does the Apple TV get to see it?
I don't know the answers, just offering this as an example of a video that is freely available for anyone to try out which clearly exceeds some of the maximum specs for the Apple TV.
Has anyone found or got anything that beats this?

  • Does iPod play latest PSP video formats?

Is it true that the iPod can play the same video formats as the PSP?
The reason I ask is that recently PSP added support for playing AVC mpeg videos
at arbitrary bitrate, and I don't know whether iPod can handle the same.
The same as in directly copying over the videos without touching them.
How this came about was I was downloading the "Ancient Chinese Secrets" videos
via bittorrent ( http://www.mininova.org/tor/1002146 if you are curious)
And I found that on the PSP the bitrate was NOT constant, so it must be the
new arbitrary bitrate, and they only play in the /VIDEO/ folder of the PSP. So this is the newest format of AVC mpeg4. I was wondering if iPod supports these new formats as well. Can anyone who is knowledgeable answer this question. Or
better yet, download them and try playing them. Thanks.
I am hoping iPod supports these latest codecs, if not hope they include them
    in the future.

    here are the video formats

  • Convert for iPod vs Apple TV

Movies from the iTunes store play on both iPods and Apple TV but I have some non-iTunes movies that I need to convert so they will play. I didn't realize there was a difference between the video destined for iPods vs Apple TV. What exactly is the difference between these two conversion commands under the Advanced menu in iTunes?

    The following is from: http://www.apple.com/itunes/store/podcaststechspecs.html#formattingvideo
You format any video for iPod or Apple TV the same way. It used to be a slightly different story, but now however, they recommend not modifying specifically for iPod. The specs below should enlighten you...
Formatting Video for the iPod, the iPhone or Apple TV
    Back to top
Although iTunes can play a variety of .mp4, .m4v, and .mov video formats, Apple TV, the iPod, and the iPhone require more specific formats.
The iPod and the iPhone support up to 640x480 while Apple TV supports up to 1280x720. To optimize for all three platforms, we recommend that your source file is at least 640 pixels wide and that you use the built-in iPod converters in Compressor ("H.264 for iPod"), QuickTime Pro ("Movie to iPod") or iTunes ("Convert Selection for iPod"). Each of these maintains the aspect ration of your source file and results in an M4V file containing H.264 video (Low Complexity version of the Baseline profile) and AAC-LC audio. If you want to maximize the screen area of a wide-screen TV, your source file should have an aspect ratio of 16:9 (e.g., 640x360). If you want to maximize the screen area on the iPod, your source file should have an aspect ratio of 4:3 (e.g., 640x480).
Because it uses H.264 Main Profile, QuickTime Pro's "Movie to Apple TV" converter will result in a video that will not sync with the iPod.
Refer to the specifications below if you are not using the built-in converters in Compressor, QuickTime Pro, or iTunes.
iPod and iPhone can play the following video formats:
H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Low-Complexity version of the Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
H.264 video, up to 768 kbps, 320 x 240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
Apple TV can display H.264 video, up to 5mbps, 1280x720, 24 fps, Progressive Main Profile. Apple TV supports AAC-LC audio up to 320 Kbps. The gating factors for video are bit rate and frame rate. The following are some sample conversions generated by the QuickTime Pro when choosing "Movie to Apple TV":
    Input Output
    640x480, 30fps 640x480, 30fps, 3mbps*
    1280x720 24fps 1280x720, 24p 5mbps*
    1280x720, 30fps 960x540, 30fps 4mbps*
    1920x1080, 24fps 1280x720, 24fps 5mbps*
    1920x1080, 30fps 960x540, 30fps 4mbps*
    1080i up to 60fps 960x540, 30fps 4mbps*
    *Represents an average bit rate.

  • What is the best way to format Videos for ipod touch?

What is the best way to format Videos for ipod touch? Used Quicktime Pro/ Export (iPhone setting). Videos aren't as crisp as downloaded Videos. Compressors /ipod video Setting also looks crapy (with bitrate med & High). What should I use?

Visualhub is a transcoder with multiple input and output formats with specific setting for iPod,iPod touch. Costs around $19-used to work great but recently everything I convert suffers audio crash than closes out the player. Hopefully they will fix it.
Elgato H.264 hardware transcoder is $99 dollars(USB stick that plugs in to Mac)-speeds up encoding of any file quicktime can handle, settings for apple tv, iphone/touch, ipod,Sony PSP. Worth the cost if you transcode a lot of video for the Touch or own an elgato HD tuner. Files work flawlessly and look great.
Mpeg streamclip-free. Works great, has presets or can customize the output.

  • Convert WMV to a video format for iPod?

    Hello,
I have a WMV recording of a Microsoft Live Meeting event. It is 1.5 hours in length, about 31MB and 4 fps. I need to convert it to a video format that can be played on a video iPod. When I try to export as MP4 from Premiere Pro CS4, the file size really balloons. What settings can I use to keep the file size similar to that of the WMV?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
You could try using the Apple iPod Video Small preset in AME under H.264 format after customizing the Target Bitrate and Maximum Bitrate. Try reducing these bitrate values. You could use the Estimated File Size that shows up at the bottom of the AME Settings UI as a rough guide to the final file size.To change the bitrate values, first launch AME Settings UI by clicking on the Settings button in AME batch after selecting the batch item.
    Hope this helps. Thanks.

  • Quicktime exported "Video format not supported by the iPod".  Why?

    Any help appreciated.
-I just downloaded new version of quick time 7.6.4, alongside iTunes 9.00, paid for Quick time Pro, entered the key code successfully and the Pro-only options of Quick Time become available.
-I exported my quicktime video files "movie to iPod". (File type m4v).
    -Added file to iTunes library.
-When I sync my ipod (160GB "classic"), i get an error saying the "video format is not supported by the iPod". (I can watch downloads from the Itunes store without a problem.) It happens several times.
    Any suggestions?

    MagnusX,
I feel your angst on the Apple Rep poor communication skills, we've been there too, so as end users, we try to help other like yourself who comes up against a brick wall.
Your iPod classic firmware 2.0.4 support the following video format
H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
Most likely the resolution or bitrate doesn't fall into the supported Video spec.
If you are using a Mac, I suggest you download a free video converter, called handbrake
You can also Google for other version of the video convertor if you are using Windows.

  • Video format for ipod classic 30gb

    Hi,
I've just bought a music video from the iTunes Store, but, when I try putting it on my older click wheel 30gb Ipod Classic, iTunes tells me it wasn't copied to the Ipod because it cannot be played on the Ipod. I checked the music video's format and found out it was m4v. Could that be the source of the problem? If so, do I have to convert it to mp4 or something similar? And how do I do that?
    Any advice or help?

A 30GB iPod that plays video is a 5th gen iPod.  NOTE:  The 4th gen "classic" iPod with color display may also be 30GB, but those iPods cannot play videos.
Video format may be an issue, because the first iPod with video capability had a lower limit for video resolution. And if the video is "HD," that video is too high-res for even a new iPod classic.
NOTE:  You can convert videos in iTunes using the command
menu bar -> File -> Create New Version -> Create iPod or iPhone Version
but that command is disabled for videos that use DRM (copy protection).  A purchased video (such as a musiuc video) from the iTunes Store uses DRM.  For purchased videso that are HD, you may be entitled to also download the SD (standard definition) version at no cost.  The SD version may play on your iPod.

  • Syncing/Video Format issue from iTunes to iPod touch

I recently upgraded to a 4th gen touch from 4th gen iPod. All my previous videos were able to be synced properly. Ones I just purchased from iTunes store, however, I cannot load onto my iPod touch. I'm not able to sync it nor drag it into my device to upload.
This is the message I receive when syncing: +"Some of the videos in your iTunes library, including "xxxxxx" were not copied to the iPod "xx" because they cannot be played on this iPod."+ When I clicked further the message reads +"...the video format is not supported by this iPod."+
All of these are regular ole TV shows in MPEG-4 format. Yes, I can watch them on my computer. Yes, my software is up to date. Yes, I have iTunes 10 (and reinstalled it). Yes, my properties are to automatically sync my TV shows (which is why I'm constantly getting above error message). Yes, I restarted and reformatted my iPod touch.

Have you tried using the Create iPod and iPhone Version in the Advanced tab of iTunes? That opion is made to convert most formates to the iPod and iPhone compatible formats.

  • Apple video format.

Wouldn't it be awesome if, Apple changed their video format to ".flv"? or at least include it?
this would mean: less space, lighter decoding, and no more convertion of video files.
    SUPPORT!!

Give that FLV is an Adobe-proprietary format and Apple has a strong preference toward open standards such as h.264 and AAC, the formats currently used in the iTuens Store, and given that Adobe has never been able to deliver a version of Flash Player suitable for Apple's iOS devices and has now announced abandonment of further development Flash for any mobile devices, it's highly unlikely that Apple would consider offering content in FLV in the future. But you can suggest it to them here:

  • When I convert a .mov to iPod video format, the sound disappears

For some reason, I have a .mov file that loses its sound when I convert it to m4v. This doesn't happen on all .mov files, only a few. Any suggestions on things to check for/solutions?

What software are you using to convert the videos to iPod format?
If you are using Quicktime Pro, or iTunes 6.0.2 to do the conversion... then that is probably where your problem lies.
Neither QT Pro or iTunes has the ability to successfully encode a muxed video file. You'll end up with video and no sound.
You'll need to use some other software to do the conversion. There's a handful of software available. Just search the forums and you'll find many titles mentioned.
I think iSquint has become quite popular.
