Video Gaming troubles with MacBook and software updates.

I've got a question again about The Sims 2 for Macs. I've got a MacBook and have had it for almost a year now. I got the Sims 2 for it when I first got it and it has always worked perfectly on the computer. Well a few days ago, I ran a software update for the first time in a while and now the game won't work at all! When I double click to open the game, the CD drive doesn't even run. The icon bounces at the bottom of the screen for a minute then disappears.
The updates installed were for OS X 10.4.10, Security Update, QuickTime, Front Row, iTunes and an Audio Update. I don't think it's a coincidence that the game quit working as soon as I installed these updates. DOes anyone know which one could have caused it and/or is there a way to undo a software update without restoring the whole system?

Sorry, I cant help much, but this is the intel iMac forum. You may have more luck in the correct MacBook forum.

  • Unable to connect to network with Safari and Software Update

A user I support has encountered a problem with networking. He is unable to connect to the network with Safari and Software Update, but IS able to connect and surf with Foxfire and some other programs. Another unusual symptom is that he actually can connect to one web site (which is in his Bookmarks Bar) with Safari, but can't connect to anything else. He's also unable to navigate off of that one site he connects to. When he runs Network Diagnostics, he gets all green lights (no problems). He has fixed permissions, deleted Safari Cache and .plist, rebooted - not fixed yet. He's using 10.4.8 on a PowerPC G4. Any ideas appreciated (this is the wierdest I've seen in a while!).

Here's what he did. After reading your post, he created another location in his network preferences, entering EXACTLY the same info that was in his old location (he even used the old DNS addresses), except using a new location name. Then he chose the new location and "everything worked". It's one of life's great mysteries. Thanks for your help - it is appreciated.

  • Problem with MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1

I've installed the MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1 on my 17" MacBook Pro. Seems to have fixed any keyboard issues I may have been experiencing. But every time I run software update this particular update wants to be installed again. I've run the install three times and it's still being flagged as being needed.
    Anyone else having this problem?
Only thing that I suspect is that it's because I've got my HD formatted as case-sensitive. I've noticed that formatting a drive as case-sensitive will break several popular games.
Can't we standardize on case-sensitive volumes yet, it's the 21st century for crying out loud!

    I had the same issue.
How did you figure this out?
I was on the phone for almost two hours (mostly waiting) with support and they simply came up with 'Archive' and 'Store' and 'Rebuild' your system, which quite frankly would not have fixed this issue because I still would have a case-sensitive drive.

  • HELP! Problems with MacBook after software updates install.

    Hi Guys,
I have a friend of mine that has a MacBook. After a while without doing the software updates she connected her MacBook on the internet and there was a lot of software updates to do, so she went on and install everything. She describes me that the problem was with Tiger 10.4.11, it pop up a "Warning Sign - Error" and freezes she says.
She re-start the computer and It get stuck on the gray window with the Apple with the lil circle spinning endless.
Is there any tip or something that I can help her?...
    [Sorry about my english... lol)

    Hello coreanomac!
The following Apple Support article is good for working through the problem. Based on your explanation of what happened, follow the advice of the "Try a different software update source" and "Installation fails during 'optimization'" paragraphs of the "Troubleshooting an unsuccessful installation" section:
Mac OS X: Troubleshooting installation and software updates
Also reading the "Before Installing" section may be useful, as well.

  • Problems with Macbook after Software Update

I haven't updated my Macbook in a long time, so I decided it was time I probably did. Software Update had updates for iTunes, Quicktime, and a 2009-Security Update. Everything seemed to be going okay. After the downloading and installing finished, it said the Security Update couldn't be installed and moved it to the trash. Then it prompted me to restart my computer because the other two installed okay.
After restart, when my computer started back up, my Macbook is messed up. The doc is missing. I open a finder window, and it shows the main folders, but all the things on the right (where it shows the drive, applications, and such) is missing. I tried to back up my files, but it can't even read there is a blank disc inserted (keeps asking me to insert a blank disc). And it wont let me shut down my computer, or restart it. I click restart, and it seems like it accepts it, but it just doesn't do anything. The dashboard wont show up when you hit F12. This mac is all messed up.
I don't know what happened here, all I installed was iTunes and Quicktime from the Software Update (security update didn't install), and all this happened. Any idea what happened and how I can fix this?
I'm using Mac OSX Tiger 10.4.11.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
There's a variety of things you could try, but first as to why it is doing this. Probably your drive was slightly corrupted. If it was minor you might not have noticed it, but when the updates tried to install, the whole thing compounded and led to a whole bunch of things missing.
First, try to repair your drive. Boot from the System installer disc that came with your computer or is the one for the version you currently have on there, select language if applicable, choose utilities, run Disk Utility and verify (and repair if necessary) the drive. You can verify a drive from DU on your main drive while booted but I have found this can result in incorrect reporting of errors. To repair your drive you have to run it from a drive other than the boot drive anyway.
Next, boot from your drive in [Safe Mode|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393] and repair permissions. You can repair permissions while booted from the installer disc but this uses the permissions configuration on the installer disc which may be out of date if you have run any updates on your computer. Booting your computer to Safe Mode restricts the number of things running on your computer while permissions are being run and does a bit of spring cleaning at the same time.

    [Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751]
+Summary of above from BDaqua+ (couldn't have said it better):
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer (Edit: Do not use this disc if it is not the same general version as what you have currently on your computer, e.g. use a Tiger disc for a Tiger drive, not a Panther disc), then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Then Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes."
Report back after you have done this. It may be that you have to use a more powerful utility such as Diskwarrior.
Once the drive is repaired you can try re-applying the two updates, though often it takes a full archive and install, plus re-application of all updates, to get everything working again.

    Finally, on updating:
    Updating
Certain steps appear to minimize the risk of an update producing problems.
Number one is to make sure you have a bootable clone backup of your computer in case you do need to back out of it again. This is the only guaranteed way of not having to worry about the results of an update.
Some like to boot from their installer discs or an external backup and verify (and if necessary repair) their internal drives as well as drive permissions. This is done with Disk Utility. You can verify a drive while booted from the same drive but sometimes this produces spurious errors. Repairing a drive (if necessary) has to be done while booted from another disk.

You can also go to the step of booting into safe mode to do the install.

I like to download the update onto my computer and install it from there rather than let Software Update do it. I know a few people who had problems with doing the update via software updater found a manual install to work.
    Repair permissions again afterward.
It helps to only install one update at a time and to run the computer for a while to make sure it is behaving well.
The more cautious even like to unplug third party peripherals (see [comment by BDaqua|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9040746#9040746]).
Almost all of the above steps (except backup) have been questioned (e.g., [Permissons repair|http://www.macworld.com/article/52220-3/2006/08/repairpermissions.html] as to necessity. Probably many people have done successful updates without doing them. I say they can't hurt, they can very likely do good (especially if your computer isn't regularly maintained), so why not do them to be safe?

  • Mini DVI-to-Video Adapter troubles with MacBook

    Hello,
I recently purchased a Mini DVI-to-Video Adapter (the one with Composite and S-Video output) to use with my MacBook to use my computer to watch movies on my TVs. The TVs are very late model, so they may not work, but when I plug the Adapter into my computer and then plug the Composite Video cord into my TV, the TV's picture is black and white and has four replications of the desktop. It is very fuzzy but the TV is clearly receiving some input from the desktop. Does anyone have any ideas of how to correct this, or is it just because the TVs are so old? Thanks for the help.
    -Bill

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, schumawm.
Most likely the wrong timing/resolution is being sent to the TV. If mirroring is turned on in Display preferences under the Arrangement tab, uncheck the mirror box to turn mirroring off. Then set the TV's resolution to 640 x 480 as a starting point. 640 x 480 may be all that an older TV is capable of.

  • Trouble with 6.0 software update

Hi there, I have just updated the software to 6.0 and purchased some tunes, but when I connect I am told that my software cannot download the tunes as my software is out of date, yet I am using the latest version? I have Windows XP and 15GB ipod. Any feedback much appreciated.

Do you mean, when you connect your iPod to the iTunes PC, you get that message?
If so, sounds like you need to run the iPod updater.

  • Trouble with iPod and iTunes update

alright, I put another post on this board about the problem, but no responses really helped. I also went way back and read many other posts, and have yet to find anything that relates to my problem. I also searched through google, and found nothing. There are many things that are similar but don't cure my problem. Everytime that I plug my iPod into my computer to update it, a message pops up saying, "Attempting to copy to the disk 'M@'s IPOD' failed. An unknown error occurred (-69)." I have seen error messages that have a (-36) or a (-50), or something like that, but never any that have a (-69). Sometimes a few songs will actually update, but most of the time, none do before this error message pops up. Also, whenever I plug it in and it starts to try the update, the iPod begins making a small buzzing sound; this seems odd to me. I have uninstalled and removed iTunes from my computer and reloaded it, updated the iPod multiple times, I have done all of the famed "5 R's", but nothing has yet fixed this problem. I honestly have no idea what to do and have been spending hours over the past few days trying to fix it, but nothing is working. Please somebody help me with this, because I fear my iPod may just be broken. It is a click-wheel 20GB that I've had for about a year and a half. Someone please try to help with this one...Thanks

  • Major Sync and software update issue with windows 7 and iphone

Loved my iPhone 3g and love my 4.0! My only concern is syncing and software updates are sporadic.
When I first purchased and sync'd my 3g on my laptop, that I had since 2005 w/XP home 64bit, it would constantly (1 out of 5 times) show phone was disconnected and could not sync. Purchased a desktop, 2009 w/Vista 64bit (same issue mentioned continued) then upgraded to windows 7 64bit (same issue mentioned continued).
Both pc's are authorized and contain the same apps and software. I went through all trouble shooting steps (authorize/deauthorize, phone hard boot, sync w/airplane mode on and/or off, uninstall and or reinstall iTunes, etc...) when both phones would brick after software updates on both pc's.
The last software update 4.0 and most recent 4.2.1 went well on laptop with XP and no longer shows sync issue. The problem continues on the windows 7 and backup has completed successfully 3 times.
Long story short, I have to pray the laptop never dies because iTunes, syncing and software updates on XP works now! The problem with software update, backups and syncing persists on windows 7.
    * I was able to apply 4.2.1 software update on XP and then connect to windows 7 to sync and backup successfully. I then disconnected/reconnected iphone to windows 7 and problem happened again, unable to sync phone was disconnected error message.

I've had my new pc for over a year, never had any probs syncing my iphone (then a 3G but now the big 4!)
I went to sync updates to Apps and a couple of tunes I had downloaded straight to my phone only to get an error message 'iTunes has stopped working - windows is checking the problem' followed by another messaged telling me there was a problem causing the program not to work correctly. Windows will close the program and notify me if a solution is found'
Well..... I have NO music on my iPhone and every time I try to sync, the same error messages come up and the bloody program shuts down....
