Video Graphics Card and the iMac

Can the video graphics card you have in the iMac be replaced with another graphics card?
Or is it hardwired in? Sorta like a wysiwyg?

Darren, thx for the list. I didn't think think the graphics card could be changed out, but I think it was worth asking.
Besides that, I think the Radeon 9600 card is a good enough card anyway

  • Can i add a video graphics card to the HP TouchSmart 420t

I just purhased an HP Touchsmart 420T and I'd like to know if I can add a video graphics card?

This is the same answer that has been given for every model over the past 3 years and continues to be the case.
For all intent the graphics cards in the Touchsmart desktops are NOT upgradable, even with a "standard" MXM card since the motherboard and BIOS are custom made for HP and do not support additional non-HP graphics cards and their firmware/BIO

  • How can you tell if your video/graphics card is failing?

I have been playing World of Warcraft for over 7 months now (insert geek jokes here), and I have never experienced the problems that I have been experiencing with WoW this weekend.
I was hoping that it was just a connection/internet issue with WoW, but when i play on my laptop (and older Powerbook G4), screen loads aren't slow like they are on my Intel iMac.
Yesterday and today have been horrible. I'll get disconnected at least 4-5 times (which NEVER happens) and when I am finally logged into my account for game play, it's horrible lag. And even then, it takes a while for the background or other characters to load.
I'm worried that it's my video/graphics card and might be failing. How would I know if this was the case?
I am still hoping it's just a connectivity issue and has nothing to do with my card. But I don't know at this point.
    I'm very frustrated.
Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Suzanne

Wow, ok, sounds like you are on the exact same path that I'm on. I'm a WOW player also, have had my iMac since 2008 (and play wow alot, raiding, etc) and recently it fried it's graphics card. I just replied to your thread about HDDs... so please see that response.
I'm convinced it's a heat issue and I have a feeling the latest OSX update may have changed something about the fan speed that caused extra heat to build up. Just a theory.
Anyway, your options are very limited for "fixing" a screwed up graphics card. Hopefully you have AppleCare, otherwise you're looking at ~$500 to fix this.
I'm not going to bother. Just bought a new monitor and graphics card for my 4y.o. Windows machine and will be using that from now on. I'll miss the Apple display and the operating system, but the hardware doesn't make me happy at all.
    Good luck!

  • Do I need to replace video graphic card or power supply unit on hp compaq presario sr2180nx

    hello all
i saw a similar post over 4 years ago, however it doesn't address my issue.
my pc started stalling when i attempt to turn it on.  It wouldn't come on. Then after several tries every now and then it would come on. I was told through searching that it could be the video graphic card or the power supply. Therefore once i had the computer back on.  I never shut it off. However, i could reboot and it would come on.
Now it won't come on again. So i don't know what to replace. The video graphic card or the power supply.  If it is the graphic card, do i replace the one previously installed or add a new one. And if adding a new one, what is recommended to be compatible with my 300 watt supply unit? I'm lost as what route to take and how.Below are the details of my unit.
HP/Compaq Presario SR2180NX desktop PC with a P5LP-LE motherboard with an Integrated graphics using Intel GMA 950.
*Integrated video is not available if a graphics card is installed.
Also supports PCI Express x16 graphics cards
    300 watt supply.
thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Is there an add-in video card in the slot? If so, remove it and try to turn on. If the problem is the video card it will turn on. If not it is the power supply.

  • P6510y graphics card and PSU

I just bought a new HP p6510y Desktop and I really would like to upgrade the graphics card from a ATI HD4200 to a HD5750.  Is that feasible and could anyone give any more info about possible Graphic video card upgrades and Power supply units?  Thanks

Upgrading to a pci x16 graphics card is posible (I upgraded to a GeForce GTX 460)Yes, power supply is needed. (I upgraded to a 600 watt)
Upgrading the Graphics card has other benifits, it will free up resorces used by the system onboard video as in the utilization of your RAM. (need to change the primary video graphics card in the bios from onboard to PCI-E when you have your new graphics card). Your windows experience of the RAM  will change from 5.9 and if using a Geforce GTX 460 to 7.5, Substansial increase in PC performance.
Games played with upgrade with graphics card World of War Craft, Magica, Counter strike and Eschalon: Book 2 with no issues.
    Other upgrades possible:
Athlon II x4 630 to a Phonom II x4 955 will increase your windows media index score from 7.2 to 7.3 Overclocking not availible with current motherboard that i know of...
Ram DDR3 PC3 8500@1066MHz, see HP support, have not done this yet, but may run at 1333mhz with a PC3-10600 upgrade utilizing two RAM slots and not three or more?
To get a machine that gets a windows index score of 7.3, 7.5, 7.5, 7.5, 5.9  (windows experience index is an option in teh windows control pannel). Not a bad machine for the price with a little personal upgrade touch.
If you decide to upgrade the motherboard, with a sata3 harddrive and with a little overclocking of the Processor and Graphics card you may get a 7.7, 7.7, 7.7, 7.0. Maybe someday i will try this.
USB 2.0 on front and back and USB 1.0 on bottom back. 3.0 has a great increase in speed if upgraing motherboard.
SATA 1 no real way to inclrease the data perormance of 5.9. Need SATA 2 or 3 and is not aplicable on current motherboard, SATA 3 recomended if you get a new motherboard.
Hell, why not just keep the HP computer case?
HP P6510Y, AMD Phenom II x4 955 (upgraded), 4G ddr3 10600@1333 MHz, GeForce GTX 460(upgraded), 600 watt Thermaltake TR2 power supply (upgraded). 27 inch HP 2709 Active Matrix TFT lcd (bright and colorful for gaming compared to others in my personal opinion).

  • Graphics card and motherboard bios

i have recently purchased a hp pavillion p6 2371ea, trying to play a game i realised the new pc was not up to spec. having now bought a nividia gtx 650 ti im struggling to get it to work. the machine already has an intergrated graphics card in it. ive tried to find the right option in bios to disable the intergrated graphics card. the problem is the joshua h61-uatx motherboard doesnt have the option of the graphics card and the ability to disable it. any ideas as to how i can over come this issue?

Here are the specs for your HP Pavilion p6-2371ea Desktop Computer. According to the specs, this model shipped with Windows 8 and a 300 watt power supply. To use the GTX 650 Ti you will need to upgrade the power supply to a 500 watt or 600 watt unit. The Corsair CX500 and CX600 are known to fir most HP comsumer desktop computer cases and come highly recommended. The next thing you need to do is DISABLE "Secure Boot" and ENABLE "Legacy Support" in the BIOS. Doing these things should resolve your issue.

  • IMac, graphics card and Final Cut Studio

I have an iMac, Intel Core Duo 1.83G, 1 GB 667MHz RAM. I finally made the plunge and bought and tried installing FCStudio 2 but it wants a different graphics card. Can my CPU support FCP and if so, what graphics card is recommended and what sort of RAM do I really need to run this well? Or am I better off getting a different computer? Thanks for your advice

... what graphics card is recommended ...
AFAIK you cannot upgrade your graphic card in any iMac. Did you check the system requirements for FCS?

  • Video graphics card after wiping dv6000 clean and starting over with windows 7

i recently had a virus on my hp pavilion dv6000 notebook and it ate pretty much everything. the person who worked on my computer just started it over new with windows 7. this notebook was originally windows vista. i have tried to install the sims 3 which i have just bought brand new and it keeps saying that the video graphics card is not supported. i went to the update i found on hp.com but there isn't a choice in the systems options for windows 7 on this notebook model. what do i do now?

seems like sims 3 does not support your hardware w/c is your graphics card. updating drivers wont do much
but still if you want to update your graphics driver try going to hp.com and place in the search box your laptops product number and the hit enter, look for software and driver downloads link and you will see therer all the applicable updates for your hardware..

  • Graphics Card Options on iMac 20 and 24 inch

I hate thelack of consumer graphics cards options for the iMac. I was going to buy the 20" iMac and upgrade the memory to 256MB when I decided to check out the 24".
On the Canadian site, to upgrade the 20" X1600 card to 256MB is $150. On the 24", to go from the Geforce 7300 128MB to the Geforce 7600 256MB is only $90. Ram 'AND' better(slightly?) graphics card upgrade.
Can someone explain as I asked an Apple retailer and they couldn't.
I went into CompuSmart afterwards and they actually had a X1600 card but it had 512MB on it. (For $150, I'd think I'd get an upgrade to 512, not 256).
I guess us consumers don't need more powerful graphics cards.
    iMac Core2Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Let me see if I can explain this to you.
The grahics card in the iMac 20" is an ATI Radeon X1600. It comes standard with 128 MB of VRAM. You can upgrade the VRAM to 256 MB for $75 on the U.S. store. That's $150 on the Canadian store.
The standard graphics card in the 24" iMac is an NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT with 128 MB of VRAM. The upgrade option here is not just adding more VRAM, but putting a whole new card in the iMac. The 256 MB VRAM option for the iMac 24" is a NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT with 256 MB VRAM. That upgrade is $125 on the U.S. store. That's $90 on the Canadian store.
The only way I can think that this is possible is because, in Canada, ATI's cards might be more expensive than NVIDIA's cards.
There is no option on any iMac to get any graphics card with 512 MB of VRAM in it.
    Hope this Helps

  • Can I change the graphic card in my Imac 21.5 2012 year

Can I change the graphic card in my Imac 21.5 2012 year.

You can't change the graphics card on 2012 model of iMac (unless you are talking about the THICK iMacs then I don't know). If you do want to change graphics card, then it probably needs expertise on soldering skills. CPU, RAM and HDD/SSD can be changed. The RAM is not soldered in. I have seen someone changed the RAM. Please check iFixit website for information on 2012 iMac:

Also, don't forget that the screen is glued.

Hello, I have a Mac computer with NVIDIA 750M dedicated graphics card and monitor EIZO but the problem was there when I was working with Windows and Acer monitor. When I open a file from Camera Raw in PS this is smaller than the screen so I double-click with the tool "hand" to fit on the screen, but the picture loses sharpness and becomes blurry. If you magnify the image even only slightly with the tool "zoom" the picture comes back clear. In Camera Raw instead is always sharp. I solve the problem by turning off the graphics card in PS but often use plugin that need the graphics card otherwise the processing time is much longer. I ask for help.
    Thanks.

Why does iPhoto not recognize the .jpg pics from a Kodak C875 now? I can stick my memory card in the iMac and import them that way, but iPhoto will not import the pics from the camera.

There have been many issues reported with Kodak cameras - serach the forums for them
Actually the best practise is to use a card reader to import your photos, verify that they are imported ocrrectly and wait at least one backup cycle and then use the camera's format command to reformat the card and erase it - this assures no lost photos and always having the card properly formatted

  • What is the difference between the Intel HD Graphics 5000 and the Intel Iris Pro Graphics in  the current iMacs

What is the difference between the Intel HD Graphics 5000 and the Intel Iris Pro Graphics in  the current iMacs?

I am assuming you are talking about PPC Macs? Those haven't been manufactured or sold in years (since early 2006 I believe) when Apple started using Intel processors. There are still some apps which run on PPC code only which makes them incompatible with the last three Mac operating systems.
There are different Applecare products depending on which Mac product you buy, although the coverage is about the same (except for iOS devices).
