Video import from Canon A640 now hanging iPhoto

Hello,
I used to be able to import pictures AND video AVI files from my Canon A640 camera, but since I don't do video that often, at some point (I'm not sure exactly when) when I import into the latest iPhoto it just hangs with the beach ball.
If I move out the AVI (from the memory card) and import just the photos, no problem.
The gist here is something changed in iPhoto to now hang when it hits a video file. I now have to use VisualHub to convert the video to MP4, then import into iPhoto.
Any ideas?
P.S.
I initially thought iPhoto was maybe trying to convert the video, but after ~8 hours just sitting there beach balled, I killed it.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. How big is the movie file that you're having problems with. iPhoto is known to balk at importing very large movie files directly from the camera. If you use Image Capture or a card reader you can upload them to the desktop and then import into iPhoto without incident. I don't know what the cutoff point for the movie file size is but there is one.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Aperture doesn't show video imported from Canon 5D Mk 3

When I'm importing video to Aperture 3 from Canon 5D Mk 3, the files show up in Aperture with black screen. Sound is OK and the duration is unchanged but there's no image. In Finder, Quicktime and for example After Effects the video shows up normally so I can convert it to other formats, but that way it's more complicated than it should be.
Also, when using Compressor to convert the files the end result is the same. Haven't tried to import the videos to Final Cut Pro X yet... Has this happened to anyone else and what can I do to fix this? I tried to import a file to my girlfriend's Aperture 3 and it worked normally there.

Thanks, but can you elaborate as I'm new to both video and FCE. What are the item property of the clips versus in the sequence, can you advise me what settings to use, how can I find these properties? any info will help
    Cheers

  • Can't import from Canon Rebel into Yosemite iPhoto.

Updated to Yosemite 10.10, iPhoto 9.6,  which recognizes my Canon Rebel T5i and shows a video but won't import because "there's a problem downloading" which tells me nothing. Any ideas?

I had posted this issue in multiple spots so I'll answer in general and paste everywhere for others to learn what's taken me hours to figure out. I've spent nearly a work day dealing with his issue, needed the video for a work project. Anyway, short answer to a known problem, call Canon (or your camera manufacturer).
Turned out my video wasn't corrupt. I had to take the card out of the camera and insert into Mac's SD slot (which is a card reader so you could go the USB card reader route) and imported directly into iMovie. Downloading into iPhoto, Image Capture and even dragging onto my Desktop still wouldn't work for some unknown reason (probably related to my old laptop) but I was able to finally import the video as a .mov file directly from the card.
For newer Canon cameras, there is no communication setting of Normal and PTP in the menu settings as both the Canon rep and another commenter reported. The Canon rep said they are updating their utility to Yosemite OS 10.10, that it wouldn't take 6 months but he couldn't commit a timeframe. You don't need the camera software anyway if you're tethering and importing into iPhoto.
Seems the easiest solution is inserting card into computer SD slot or using a USB tethered card reader. Hope this helps save others some aggravation although I've learned my lesson about early adoption and "upgrading" to new Apple OS. If it ain't broke.....wait, then wait some more.

  • Problems importing videos recorded from my iPhone 3GS to iPhoto

I am having problems importing any videos recorded from my iPhone 3GS onto iPhoto. iPhoto keep giving me the following error:
"Error downloading Image. iPhoto cannot import your photos because there was a problem downloading an image."
If anyone else is having the same problem, please advise on how to fix.
    Thanks,

I am having the same problem...
and Image Capture ( didn't know we would normally be able to use it, but you can) also give an error
    "Import Error"
Now I have used "ITimelapse pro" to transfer some timelapse movies (about 3 that are about 30 to 60 seconds long) that I made to the phone's photo library.. and I has a very long video that I mistakenly made - (15 minutes long or so) and I "trimmed" it to be a few minutes long. -- and used "JotNot" to send a photo to the photo library... otherwise I have only some regular photos (about 40 ) and about 2 regular videos in the library.
so any suggestions... ( I am emailing all that I can to myself ... maybe ridding everything will help)

Hi this is my first post on this site.
I am having trouble trying to import video files from Canon Vixia hfs10 to imovie'11. The computer does not even recognize this camcorder. When I do a PC connection, iphoto comes up, but all it tells me to import are the pictures that I have taken.
No matter what I do, I cannot find the folder for my camcorder in the device section in the finder.
When I try to import it on imovie, I only get an option for facetime camera and not my vixia.
    Please help!

  • Importing From Canon Vixia HF M30 to Final Cut Pro

Hey there, I have been trying to import to final cut with some success. Importing From Canon Vixia HF M30 from my sd card.
    I used the easy setup.
    FORMAT HD
USE HDV APPLE INTERMEDIATE CODEC 1080I60
I go to log and transfer select the clips I need and click add to que.
So perfect there are my clips in my bin, I bring them to my timeline and a green line appears above my video, uugggggh. I know this is a rendering issue but why.
Please help does anyone know why this is happening.
This is very frustrating, I have been trying to read the other discussions I didn't see anything on it let alone the info on the net, trying different things just not working for me.
    Thanks Gang

Your camera records AVCHD. Convert to prores 422 or prores 422(LT) on log and transfer and make sure your sequence matchs your footage.

  • Why won't Aperture 2 support RAW files imported from Canon 60D when it does from my Olympus DSLR?

Why won't Aperture 2 support RAW files imported from Canon 60D when it does from my Olympus DSLR?

I'm afriad the fact that your Olympus dSLR is supported is no relevance.
The Raw from every model of camera is different. Note: that's every model not every brand. So, the NEF produced by a Nikon D40 is not the same as the NEF produced by a D60, the CR2 produced by a Canon 350 is not the same as the CR2 produced by a Canon 400.
Support for individual camera models has to be added one by one, and Apple will update the OS to work with the most recent version of the software. That's an incentive for you to keep up-to-date. So, for support for your 60D you'll need 10.6.5 plus Aperture 3 and/or iPhoto 11.

  • When importing from Canon XL2, audio is delayed by 5 seconds

When I import from Canon XL2, the audio track is there, but it is off by a few seconds. At first it was only about 1 or 2 seconds, but when I re-imported it got worse. It's fine when I import through iMovie, but I lose my multiple audio tracks.
I know I can re align on the timeline, but that's not the point!
    Thanks for help

You may have nearly filled up your hard disc.
1 hour of DV is about 13GB. Trying to capture a 2nd hour would take you up to about 26GB of space used up on your hard disc.
It's better to capture to an internal disc, or to a FireWire-connected external disc, as USB - even USB 2.0 - can't necessarily keep up with the constantly sustained data throughput speeds which DV needs.
A Mac needs about 10% of your total hard disc space to be empty, to allow for its internal 'housekeeping', log files, virtual memory files, etc. So if you have an 80GB internal disc, with, say, 13GB of operating system & programs, plus, say, 20GB of pictures, plus, say, 13GB of documents, and you add 13GB (1 hour's worth) of video, that's 59GB, and you'll need about 8GB of free space, that's 67GB accounted for, leaving about 13GB empty for your 2nd hour.
But that spare 13GB of spare space may be scattered around the disc, and not all in one sequential region, which may be why you're getting stuttering.
Not only that, but there may be 'dropouts' on the tape (brief signal disappearance) which may not show on the camcorder (..because many camcorders substitute a previous frame of video for any damaged frame..) but may only show up when you try importing. This may happen if, for instance, you recorded at a slower than normal speed, e.g; LP speed instead of Standard Play speed.
So check, first, how much empty space you have on your internal disc, and see if your external disc can be attached by FireWire, instead of the - what's becoming almost ubiquitous - USB connection.

I'm having trouble with video imported from my camera memory card. The video breaks up and pixelizes when it's directly imported from the memory card. That makes the video useless. Why does this happen? It doesn't do that in any other video editing software. Thanks for the help.

    More info please:
    Type of camera?
Was the card formatted in the camera doing the shooting?
Type of files the camera is set to record?

Running LR 5.6 on OSX 10.9.4.  Can't import from Canon 7D. Any ideas?

For future reference, if there is an error message, you should probably quote it in your original message on the subject.
"Could not be read" indicates that you do not have WRITE permission to the destination directory when you try to import, so change your permissions.
"not recognized" might indicate the camera card itself is corrupted or the card reader is failing ... or the problem might go away if you change your permissions.

You can't edit a video out of iTunes.
You would have to edit the video from the original film, either on your computer, or iPhone.

Video's get big quickly, however, assuming it's not too big, just attach it to your email and send it along.
This isn't a reliable method because you just don't know what the limits are on both ends. It is much more reliable to use a free file transfer service like Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, Amazon Cloud Drive, YouTube, etc and just send an email link.
    Eustace Mendis wrote:
You should compress the video file before transferring. Just click on the name video file and go to the File menu. Compress ... is there. The compressed file will have the same name as the original, with a .zip suffix.
That's not the way to compress a video file. Video files are already compressed using lossy codecs like H.264, and if you apply a lossless codec like ZIP you may end up with zero additional compression. In some cases, applying ZIP to a lossy compressed file may cause the file to become larger.
The correct way to compress a video is to export it from iMovie (or whatever) with the correct settings for the destination (email, YouTube, iPad, etc.).
