Video information for .avi, etc., besides .mov

.mov files have extra information in Finder, such as it shows the video length, etc. in Get Info. It doesn't show this information for .avi and other video files. How do I get it to do this?

I wouldn't count on it being available until those formats offer better metadata support. The relevant information is definitely present in the metadata included with the file in .mov files, and isn't there in .wmv files. I have a .mov file that I converted to .wmv using QuickTime. The original has the pixel dimensions and duration in its metadata, the converted version doesn't.

  • IPad2 Camera recording video to mp4 or something besides MOV?

Is there a way (or an app) to have my iPad 2 camera recored to e.g. mp4 or somthing other than .MOV?
When sending .MOV to others, the video is a) large file and b) rotated 90 degrees.  Grandparents also don't have a clue how to play .MOV
I can use handbrake (or other tools) to convert to mp4 but haven't yet figured out how to get the video to play upright.  Even when I do, this multi-step process is really keeping us from using the iPad for creating video.
I stopped by the Apple Store and they had no clue what I was asking about, but did at least know what handbrake was (which I found strange.)  When the rep started to use Google to look up what I was asking, I figured I could just do that myself as well as ask here.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

.mov is using mp4 as the video. If you don't like the file size, don't shoot stuff in hi def.
Vlc, QuickTime  play .mov files just fine.

  • Change Video Information for Multiple Videos

I recently loaded a lot of TV episodes into itunes so i can watch them on the iphone. Unfortunatly they all appear under the Movies tab. Is there any way that i can change multiple videos at a time (their information) to appear under TV shows? If so can i also add season and episode information?

You have many ways of loading the play list data. Here is an
example where the data is hard coded into an Array

  • Editing/adding track info for tv shows and movies in iTunes 12.1 for Mac.  Does anyone know how to do this?

    iTunes 12.1.0.50
    late 2012 iMac running OS X 10.10.2
I can no longer edit or add the track information for tv shows and movies.  If, for example, there are 26 episodes of a tv show in a season and I want to edit their entries in iTunes to reflect 1 of 26, 2 of 26, 3 of 26, and so on, how do I do that?  With the 12.1 update, they took away the old info box.  Very irritating.

The use of the right clicking while holding down the Option key for the "old" info box worked through iTunes 12, but when 12.1 came out, that option went away.
So edit the info with a proper tag editor (before you even add it to iTunes).
Use -> MetaZ and/or -> Subler to edit movies/TV shows.

Both the AVI and the MOV file extensions refer to the file container and not the compressed data the file contains. Both are generic file containers in that each may contain any valid combination of audio and/or video data that is compatible with the codec component configuration of the system on which the file was created. On the other hand, whether a file is playback compatible, conversion compatible, and/or edit compatible depends on the data actually contained in the file container. So, you are basically dealing with two separate issues here—the container and what is inside it.
Basically, if you want to make your files ediit compatible with iMovie, you must change your file container to one that is acceptable to iMovie and convert the data to edit compatible audio and/or video compression formats as may be necessary. The best approach is to determine what codecs were actually used to create the original AVI files and add them to your system if possible. In most cases a codec package like Perian can be added to your system's codec component configuration to may the AVI file playable. Once they are playable, in the QT 7 app then they can be chnged or converted to file types and compression formats that can be edited in iMovie. (While Perian handles most codecs commonly used to create AVI files, it does not handle all possibilities and, while the Perian codec package still works under cureent Mac OS versions, its development group has decided to drop further development/support of the package.)
Background: AVI is a file container originally developed by Microsoft back in 1992 but for which official support was discontinued about 11 years. Despite its limitations, Windows users still tend to use this file based on its open source ease of use and generic nature, thus, making its use so popular that most users are unwilling to switch to more modern but less generic file types. Since some AVI legacy compression formats have never been transcoded for the Mac or use beyond OS 9 or OS X PPC platforms, it is often important to know what specific compression formats are contained in the AVI file to know which codecs to add to your system and which not to add in order to avoid possible codec conflicts.
You can use many different converters to convert AVI files to iMovie edit compatible files. Most third-party apps contain their own buit-in codecs which do not relay on the Mac codec component configuration. Free ones, like HandBrake, usually have limited conversion capabilities while those that have more varied outputs are usually commercial in nature and will cost you additional cash. QT 7 Pro or the free MPEG Streamclip app allow you to access you own system's component configuration and use any available codec component like DV, AIC, MPEG-4, H.264, Photo JPEG, etc.—all of which are iMovie compatible for editing purposes—but only after making the AVI file QT 7 player compatible.
In order to determine what compression formats wewre used in your AVI files you can
    1) Try checking the Finder "Info" window,
    2) Use the "Inspector", "Media Info", or "Properties" window of any player app that will open the file, or
    3) Use a general media utility app like "MediaInfo" to read the file characteristics.

  • The App Store asks to "verify" my personal information, For my name, state, credit card, etc. I don't even live in the US and I don't have a CC, nor do I want to give away my personal information. I just want to download free apps. Any work-arounds?

    Title says it all.
I'm really getting sick of websites getting more and more into your business. Google forcing you to get a G+ account and asking for your identifying information, for example (like your phone number).
It's extremely irritating, and I'm opting out of everything that enforces the such. If Apple begins pushing like this, I will just close my relationship with the company and obtain apps by using third-party software to force them onto the phone.
But before going that far, I'd like to find work arounds.
First of all, I don't even know why it asks me for my "state". I don't even live in the USA anymore, as I moved to China (though I won't use the Chinese store as I don't speak or understand the local language, which is Chinese).
All I want... is to continue using the English App Store to get free apps from here in my home in China, without getting stopped by Apple asking for more info on me. I don't want to share my name, I don't want to share my address, and I can't even complete the form as I no longer have a "state" and don't have any credit info.
So that's just that. If there's no way around it I'll find another way to install apps without the App Store.
Sorry for the message tone, I'm just really irritated with the way the internet is getting.
    Thanks in advance!

The living issue is complex in my case. Legally speaking, I have no personal residence globally. I just live wherever my father goes, which is everywhere. I'm an expat and it seems that these sites aren't really expat-friendly. They seem to be built for localization and assume everyone stays in the same place.
I don't know what I'd be considered. I'm a US passport holder and live in China, but I only speak some Chinese and I can't read it (it using non-latin characters is just too much for my mind's memory to handle). Besides that, I'm not interested in popular Chinese apps. They tend to just be annoying and kooky and generic and put together badly, often full adware and spyware (speaking for most Chinese software, in fact). In fact, a lot of apps I want are illegal in China (YouTube, Facebook, etc) and I use a VPN to use the services. I assume I wouldn't find these apps on the Chinese store. In fact, last I checked, there wasn't many English apps on the Chinese app store. This is probably due to their strict moderation or something.
I've been going to international schools since I got here and college would be in English too. I can speak some Chinese, but not read it.
Well, I guess the answer is that I can't use the App Store in English. So I guess I'll just sign out everything on my phone involving my Apple account and just start using third-party tools to do my business.

  • How to see thumbnail for avi videos in finder?

I see thumbnail pictures for mpeg files but for all avi files it's just a blank white icon.
Is there some kind of video player I need to install to get this preview thumbnail to appear for avi files?
I have MIRO installed which plays them but still blank white icons in finder window.
    Thanks

    Scott,
Thanks but I got that far already setting my movie folder to show icon previews which it does.
But my problem is all the .mpeg movies DO show a picture on the icon, BUT only that extension shows an actual picture, where all my .avi movies only show a blank white icon with no picture from movie.
So my guess is that I am missing some kind of plug-in for the avi movies?
    Thanks
    Patrick
My avi movies default to QuickTime. I just changed that to VLC and the icon is now the VLC cone. The actual icon for many videos seems to be the first frame in the movie. I see this with .mp4 as well as .avi and .mov.
Interestingly after I reassigned QT to the avi I had changed to VLC, the VLC icon remains. Maybe a reboot will change it back?
Anyway, I like the first frame, usually the title to be the icon, but if you use VLC as the default you can change it to the cone.

  • Removing video information before playing a movie [ipad 2]

Hi, The reason I am here at the forum is because I find the video information showing up everytime I select a movie to watch very annoying and wanted to find a way to remove it and make video playing instantaneous. I got used to my iphone playing videos immediately after I select whatever to watch and want to make it similar to my ipad. ive tried searching the net for some answers and most of them were just about how to play videos continuously. I do hope Apple Support will be able to help me thanks.

Because the CD does not have digital encryption that has to be broken. As I said above, what is illegal is the breaking of the encrytion. It isn't so much the actual copying of the DVD content itself, which one could argue could be legal in many different "fair use" applications.
Yes, I agree it doesn't make sense, but that is how the badly concieved law reads...
    www.copyright.gov/legislation/dmca.pdf
    www.copyright.gov/title17/chapter12.pdf
So it is still illegal for Apple to create software designed to break DVD encryption, at least in the USA and other World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) member countries who recognize that law.

  • I need help to decide which macbook pro is best for photo editing, editing movies and doing all the rest too like excel, word etc. 13"

I need help to decide which macbook pro is best for photo editing, editing movies and doing all the rest too like  microsoft office products ...excel, word etc.  I am new to the apple world and have liked the idea of the MAC Book Pro 13" but really dont know if this is good enough or if the computer will soon crash?
    13-inch: 2.6GHz
    with Retina display
    Specifications
    2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
    Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz
    8GB 1600MHz memory
    512GB PCIe-based flash storage1
    Intel Iris Graphics
    Built-in battery (9 hours)2

That's a fine machine and, with 8GB of RAM and 512GB flash storage should serve you well for light video/photo editing as well as for 'normal' usage. And it should last you for years to come.
Good luck in making your decision!!

    Glenn,
I tried upgrading to leopard, even bought the software and brought it home but it wouldn't let me. So i went back to apple, gave them the specifications of the machine and been told my machine is simply too old for leopard. This is incredible to me because it really isn't THAT old (i think just a little over 6 years maybe) and yet i'm left out on the curb when it comes to using newer apple products. I understand technology moves on but the mindset that i am supposed to dump a perfectly working machine after a couple of years or face not being able to use any other apple product is counter to what thought apple was about.

  • Artifacts in Using Save As for AVI to MOV Conversion?

When I SAVE AS a compressed avi file to mov, I am seeing artifacts (they look like interlacing errors) in the final mov file, vs the same frames in the .avi file.  Can I avoid this somehow?  The avi file was compressed with the BlackMagic Intensity code (I think it's motion jpg too).
The file sizes are the same.
Bummer, I bought Quicktime Pro just for this.  Any help appreciated.
    Thanks

Can anyone here tell me why two duplicate laptops treat the avi-to-mov conversion so differently and why I must export at 480p?
As to QT playback, either the codec component configuration is different on each system or the the AVI file contains a legacy video codec that is turned on for system "A" but left off for system "B" but which is included in the Perian bundle installed on system "B." With reguard to the forced conversion rather than a simple "Save As..." action, please confirm the video codec name given in the "Inspector" window for each system. I suspect that either the video codec is different on each system or that the Perian version of the same codec with a different name may be forcing the "Export" conversion.

  • Watching saved videos on iPad (AVI or MOV)

Can I watch saved video on my iPad?
I have videos shot in avi format. but i cant seem to upload them on see them my iPad (either through Drop Box or any other source)
Do i need to convert the avi files to mov so that I can see them on my iPad?
What format videos will be visible on iPad?
    Ash

The iPad cannot natively view AVI videos. You'll either need to convert them to a supported format, details of whiich can be found in the tech specs:
    http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/
or look for an app that can play AVI. Note that AVI is a container format and can use any number of codecs, so the app will have to support the codec your AVI videos contain, as will any coverter software you use.
    Regards.

  • Adding album information for videos

Unlike adding MP3 metadata, it appears I CANNOT add an "Album" name for my videos. Sure I can select "Album" across the top but unless the album metadata is on the file when I import it, I cannot edit it in iTunes. This is very frustrating as my videos aren't just Hollywood movies but I have many teaching videos with parts 1-10, say, and I need to be able to group them together under an "Album". When I click on "Get Info" there is NO OPTION to type in a an Album NAME (like when working with MP3s). Is there some way to do this MOST BASIC function without resorting to outside software? It is extremely frustrating when software developers try to put you in a box and don't anticipate all possible needs. How could they possibly leave out the ability to type in an Album name?!? Any workaround would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps I need to revert to an older version of iTunes since so many things have been screwed up with version 12. Thanks.
