Video Ingest Options

I was hoping to get a little guidance from folks on an idea I had.  Long story short, I have a  Sony mini-dvd camcorder that has been giving me fits in Premiere.  The video it takes looks good on the DVD but when I import it into Premiere the end product has artifacts on it when I pan around with the camera.  From all the discussions and reading I believe this is the result of a lot of things including the process of decompressing and recompressing the VOB files and just poor camera work by me.  I have been hoping/planning to buy an HD camcorder, either going with AVCHD HDD (though I probably need to update my PC for that) or going with a firewire tape based camcorder.  I hate to go with tape, only because it means I'm stuck buying media...but I hate to have to buy a PC if I go AVCHD.
So, here was my idea.  In some simple testing using an old Pinacle Dazzle I had it seems like if I use the mini-dvd camcorder and then simply recapture the content off it it directly through the dazzle into the PC I get a fairly decent fix.  Basic testing shows the screen artifacts are gone or greatly reduced.  I'm hoping this lets me wait for the technology to catch up to where I want it to be. So, 2 quesitons:
1) Does this make sense as a work around, since I'm essentially recapturing the content to avoid the decompress/compress issues.
2) If so, does anyone have a good product they would recommend for capture?  My Dazzle is old and only works on an old XP machine I have.  I'm not sure if there are good and bad capture products out there, so before I wasted some money on a borked solution I thought I should ask.
3) Am I just fooling myself, and should I break down and buy a tape based camcorder (preferably HD)?
For some examples here is what I am talking about.  First, a video from my camcorder imported by Premiere from the DVD.

This is the same video captured through the dazzle.  Not perfect, but looks much better to me.

THANKS!

I would not use the Dazzle to capture my video unless I also planned to use Pinnacle Studio to edit it. Lower-end capture hardware like that is made to pretty much work only with the software that's bundled with it.
A better solution is a DV bridge, like the ADS Pyro AV Link, which has a street price of under $150 but captures virtually any video as DV-AVIs, the ideal format for editing on any PC-based video editor.

As for your DVD camcorder, you should get pretty good results (at least as good as the original) if you use the project preset for a Hard Disk Camcorder. Although, as you know, the DVD camcorder is sort of an antiquated format and a new cam may be in order.
BTW, if you don't mind sticking with standard def video, Sony miniDV camcorders (tape-based) can be had on eBay for about $100. MiniDV is the ideal format for editing on a PC or Mac, and going to that format may be the most economical means to improve your workflow.

  • Video card options for a new Mac Pro

My G5 recently died on me and I am getting ready to upgrade to a Mac Pro. My question is regarding the video card options. I will be using Aperture 2, Photoshop CS2, and Final Cut Studio, but, not doing HD work. I am trying to decide between the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB and the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB.
As my G5 has stopped working, I was not prepared for an upgrade and I am trying to cut corners where I can. Does anyone have any experience comparing these two cards? Am I being to nitpicky about a $150 upgrade? My gut feeling is that I should not be questioning the extra cost and go with the NVIDIA, but, just want to make sure that I am not wasting money for a difference I will not see, as I do not play games on my Mac. Any opinions and input from other users is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Very interesting, I went to that link and then followed the one for Pro Apps:
    http://www.barefeats.com/harper10.html
And, it states that the Radeon with less memory will consistently outperform the Nvidia on programs like Final Cut and Aperture. Guess I AM better off saving the money. Thank you for your direction!

  • MB 915/G Combo MS-7058 video card options or suggestions on the new market

First off my apologies. I wasn't sure which forum to place my question under,
    Retired Motherboards or Video Cards.
Quick summary I'm looking to upgrade my video card on an older mother board and have run into problems with a new board working. I think the problem is a backwards compatibility issue.  I need help  with a list of what video cards I can buy that are available new preferably if not a list of where to go and what to watch for. I would like to increase the speed/ram. My skill level is around, open the case swap out the item and insert the disk. With a search forums and try to find the answer/follow directions or suggestions.
    In more detail,
I'm looking to upgrade my video card from NVIDIA GeForce 6 Series  NX-6600  256mb card on a an MSI 915P/G combo. The install/instruction manual lists under the above combo name MS-7058 (v1.X) ATX Motherboard and  below the image of the board there is also the text of G52-M7058x1.
The video card option for placement is in the sole PCI Express X16 slot (no on motherboard graphics and/or connection options I know of)   and I assuming from what I've tried researching that the PCI Express x1(mentioned elsewhere but all suggestions were cards no longer for sale) is some sort of standard of limit and my motherboard is too old despite newer cards fitting into the slot and claiming backwards compatibility to the "PCI Express or Pci Express 2.0".
Part of that possible assumption of my issue comes from the fact the mother board can have ether DDR1 or DDR2 ram for memory  but a video card with DDR3 ram would not work. Also the software from the included disk and from the from the website install correctly for the card to function other than the basic windows drivers leaving the card unable to run any games.   For reference the video card purchased and tried was a  EVGA Geforce GT 610 SC9super clocked) with 2 GB of DDR3 Memory. Which i hopefully will have returned for a refund soon.  I spent most of the day trying to install the software by their program , by launching from disk directly, from downloading the most current version from the manufacturer's website and checking with Microsoft for possible system change updates.
My original invoice August 2005 lists the  pre order lists the Item VGMS-NX6600/256E   then under description MSI NX6600-TD256E/PCIEX/256MB for the grand price of $169.00  deleviery receipt lists the card as item VGXM-X66DHEJTZ1   Description XMEDIA 6600 256MB PCIE DVI/TV
Power Supply 630 watts installed July 2008 I can not get the full listings of voltage and amps per connectors without taking the powers supply loose from the case(which requires shutting the system off, so I hoping I won't need to but will if the information will help). I do not feel power is an issue due to the size and the power supply was unneeded upgrade,  that I just wanted to replace when swapping out a motherboards damaged from a lighting hit or power surge. System was running fine for years.
    General system information
Windows XP professional SP3 All updates current.
    Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz
2.00 GB of Ram DDR 1
    Videocard  NVIDA 6600   Driver 6.14.12.9573
3 hard drives of varying sizes 500GB,1TB and 2TB  Plus one external  with external power supply 1.5TB drive
If more information is needed please let me know.
The best advice and help would be a list of currently for sale video cards that will work with links to places (and the actual model even better) like New Egg,  or if there is such a card at the local Best Buy(outstanding advice on this non compatible/working card....I won't digress into my own mistake of buying there). I'm way out of date on information and standards about computers and hardware and need help  figuring out what Video Cards to look at for purchasing.   Preferably new, then re manufactured with warranty then used...  The main game I play that strains my system but is playable is call of duty modern warfare 2 and would like to run 3 if possible. Although better rates with COD MW2 and COD 4 MW.

100% correct on the mother board
The card I had tried was EVGA---GeForce-GT-610 2GB DDR3 I can't post external links but it was from Best Buy. The  box claimed requirements are that it needs PCI Express or PCI Express 2.0 compliant motherboards with one open graphic slot.  The best I could get out of it was slightly working with Windows XP basic driver which no games would run. No selecting drivers helped from the Add Hardware program.
So I should make sure it lists "PCI Express X16" and  " version 1 " "1MB(in reference to what part?)" or words to that effect?  I was mislead by the box above for capability and "NVIDIA" on it, am I correct in assuming it was a generic whore knock off which bought the rights to stick NVIDIA name on the outside for a standard or software?  Especially since the actual video card says EVGA and not NVIDIA on it....  I won't make that mistake hopefully again.
Due to age I was buying a cheap fill in card,(old one was working fine but I figured a good training/practice exercise and to see how much better the games looked  to encourage me going forward on my first build) until I can start ordering and building to  the current upgradeable standards.   I'm trying to catch up on standards and not  have a firewire or zipdrive experience. Although I might put a 5 1/4 disk drive in unused bay for show    I would prefer not to buy another per-assembled option and decent computer part stores near me are lacking. Or I lack knowledge of their locations. If it matters I'm in Charlotte, NC USA
My budget is up to about $200 although I would like to stay around $100.00 (usa dollars) if possible. I think that gives me realistic options even with places like Best Buy. If I'm not, please correct me. I'm aware best Buy will give me a special 30-50% price increase  but my local options for shops are hurting, the "best place for reputation" is a story of shame.

  • Imovie media browser only has one option, "Mobile". other videos had option for medium and small. mobile option wont import into iDVD. other videos gave me the Medium option, why not this one?

help! imovie media browser only has one option, "Mobile". other videos had option for medium and small. mobile option wont import into iDVD. other videos gave me the Medium option, why not this one? need answers ASAP!

    That is your answer then.
    Large is 960x540
    Medium is 640x480 (or 720x480)
    Mobile is probably 480x272.
It is offering you the sizes that make sense given the size of your source material.
As a trick, you might try this. In your project, put a short 640x480 clip in the project as the first clip of the project. Then keep the rest of the project as is. See if it will let you share now in Medium. It will not look as good, because there are not enough pixels to cover the Medium size, but it might work.

  • Video Playback Option in "Preferences/Audio-Video Out"

The following did not make it into the User Guide, though it did get into the troubleshooting docs:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/332121.html
332121 Video Playback option in Audio/Video Out preferences (Encore DVD)
A new option was added to the Preferences menu of version 2.0 of Adobe Encore DVD. When you select Edit > Preferences > Audio/Video Out, you see an Automatic option in the Video Playback section. This option is selected by default, allowing Encore DVD 2.0 to play video in a Standard Direct3D mode. If the feature is not selected, then video playback will be in GDI mode.
The only reason to deselect this option is in the case of poor preview playback or black video. In order for the change in preference to take effect, you must close the Monitor panel and then reopen it.
    Background information
Encore DVD 2.0 (unlike previous versions of Encore DVD) uses the Premiere Pro playback engine for video playback. Premiere Pro has three Desktop Display modes: Compatible, Standard, and Accelerated GPU Effects. In Compatible mode, video is played using the GDI. In Standard mode, video is played using Direct 3D. In Accelerated mode, video is played using Direct 3D with GPU.
The default setting for Encore DVD 2.0 is comparable to Premiere Pro's Standard mode (Direct 3D). When the Automatic option is deselected, it is comparable to Premiere Pro's Compatible mode (GDI).
If Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 detects a Direct 3D error when previewing in Standard mode, it switches to Compatible mode. Encore DVD 2.0 does not have this capability, nor does it provide the same option in the User Interface for the user to switch between the three display modes. This is why the Automatic option was included in the Audio/Video Out preferences.

    Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
Sounds like you've been shooting at p ("progressive") frame rate (..24p or similar).
iMovie can't handle that (..except for JVC's 720p footage..) and it thinks that each frame is a "field" (..half a frame). It therefore plays those frames at double speed, thinking that there should be two 'fields' to a single frame.
Did you shoot at a "p" frame-rate..? If so, you'll need to convert the material, with some other program, so that iMovie can handle it.
I can't remember offhand what software might do this, but if you were shooting in HDV hi-def (which is recorded in the camera using the MPEG-2 video system) you may be able to use MPEG Streamclip (click on that blue link) to "unscramble" your material.

  • Final Archived video export options?

    Final Archived video export options?
    Hello All
What is the best method for exporting video for archive purposes, once you’ve done all you editing, correcting, toning, grading and so on.  So that you can have a master corrected file incase the Premiere file should become corrupted or something else.  I deal in 10-20 short clips maybe 10-15 seconds each and I want to keep them in an uncompressed HD format.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks
    Mark

If you're talking about master output media, as Harm says, the important thing is that you use a lossless codec such as Cineform or Lagarith.
If you're talking about the actual prproj files, you don't have much choice other than Project > Project Manager > Trim Project.  This will remove unused material and give a few other options.   Store the whole project  - trimmed material and all - -on a removable drive.
Before the days of cheap storage, the rushes would be deleted and, if ever needed again, re-digitized and reconformed using the prproj and EDL files.

  • Nokia N95 video share option

    Hi,
I have an N95 according to the manual I have a video share option, so I tried to use this against a video share server that I can access, however in the call options as it states I dont have the option.
I have the latest firmware, unbranded using EURO1 firmware.
Anyone know how to activate the video share option in the handset... I was told it was in tools-> settings-> but again i dont have that option..
If anyone has it can you tell me which firmware you are using, or if the Nokia mods can tell me how to activate it... or tell me who I can call at Nokia to get it activated... since I dont see why I dont have teh option on an unbranded firmware, I understand on an operator branded handset not being there.

I've installed no applications recently. I have a few games and stuff like that but I've had them since I got the phone and have had no problems.
I just tried the idea of taking the memory card out and trying to record, but the camera won't even work because it says "Memory Full - close some applications and try again."
I don't understand why it says this when my memory isn't remotely full and no background applications are open.

  • Video menu option is missing from my iPod menu.

I purchased a 60gb photo ipod approximately two weeks before the video release. When the video release software was available I downloaded it and the "video" option appeared on my iPod menu. A few weeks later I ordered my first videos from Itunes. After downloading the videos and updating my iPod, I found the video menu option was gone from my iPod. I have reset my ipod, deleted and installed new software, used the updater and have never been able to get the "video" menu option to show up again on my iPod. I can view the video in itunes but I can't get it onto my iPod. I just downloaded the latest iPod and iTunes software today and still no luck. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, were you able to fix it? I love the iPod and would like it a lot more if the video function worked for me. Thx for the help.

  • ITunes 'Video Size' option not available.

My earlier version of iTunes was getting cranky and stopped working earlier today. I took it off the box and reloaded the new version. It works fine except for this one thing noted above. My videos always fill the window now, no matter their original size was. With some older vids, this can be quite annoying as they get too blurred. When I check the the 'Video Size' option, it's greyed out and unavailable. I can't get the option when I'm watching the video either.
BTW, I'm not having this problem in QuickTime.

This is an old thread, but in the latest iTunes, edition 10.4, I found myself unable to use the keyboard shortcuts to change the size of the video from iTunes.
I dug around and found no way to get that feature to work.
What does work, though not as easily (I do prefer shortcut keys), is to right click in the video window to show the options (you do have to do it several times should the first request not change the size as much as you like). Otherwise, you can just click and stretch or shrink using the bottom right corner tool in Snow Leopard or any corner in Lion.

  • Iphone picture/video messaging option diappeared

i went to send a picturetoday only to discover that the picture and video messaging option was completely gone in my text. then i went into my photos on my phone and went into the sharing option and the only one missing was mms. how can this be fixed?

Did you change your AT&T data plan as part of the upgrade? MMS needs to be enabled on the carrier side - might try calling AT&T (611 from your phone).

  • No video output option at movie project setting can not use my blackmagic video card

no video output option at movie project setting can not use my blackmagic video card

There's no change if I hold command-R to boot into recovery. The mac chimes on powerup but nothing else seems to happen.
The machine has an SSD drive in it so I can't even listen to hear if it is loading anything or acting differently when I try different keypresses.
As I had some spare RAM lying around, I've tried swapping that in but no change there either. I still suspect it's a software rather than hardware problem, but without any way to control the boot up, I'm not sure how I can fix it.
I do have remote time machine backups - is there any way of restoring these manually, perhaps by removing the drive from the mac and copying the backup data over using another system? (Unfortunately I don't have any other mac systems to experiment with this, though)
