Video Ipod - Half Mac/Half Windows?

I have a Video Ipod that is currently formatted for the Mac. I would like to use about half the storage capacity to transfer files between Macs and PC's and the other half as my Macintosh-formatted ipod. I really don't want to format the whole thing for Windows since I rarely use Windows at home.
Is it possible to partition the ipod so that one partition is the Mac partition that iTunes sees and syncs with and the other partition is a FAT32 partition?
thanks

I doubt you will succeed in this plan however, you can try the non-destructive partitioning software that is available. Or in theory , backup your data, use disk utility to do two partitions, one HFS and one FAT32 and see if iTunes freaks out or not, if it does, restore it. I imagine there may be some details, but in DU you can look now to see the type of partition the iPod uses, since if it is mounted it is just another drive.

How do I change my Ipod from mac to windows format?? My Imac is not working at the moment, but I want to use my Ipod on my PC. How do I get my Ipod(mac formated) to get work on my PC??

Use iTunes on the PC to restore the iPod, or install XPlay on the PC without changing the format. Restoring the iPod will erase everything on it.

  • Formatting 3rd Gen ipod from Mac to Windows

    Hello.
I need to format a 3rd Gen iPod from Mac to windows for my Father in Law.
So please can anyone tell what the process is?
    Many thanks,

The iPod is formatted for both PC and Mac, I used to use mine with a PC, bought a Mac, plugged it in and it worked with the Mac no problem. I'm not sure that this works both ways though, if you're having problems you could try this link for help: http://ipod.about.com/od/restoreandreformatipod/a/ipod_reformat.htmhttp://

  • Reconfigure iPod from mac to Windows detrimental?

Have: video iPod, G4 w/current iTunes library, new PC
Don't have: DVD burner, network for the 2 computers.
Trying to get iTunes library from G4 to PC. Would like to use iPod as hard disk, but configured to mac. Can I reconfigure iPod to Windows for the transfer or will that adversely affect iPod long-term?
With no network connection, DVD burner, or other storage (external hard disk, flash, etc.) Is the only other option to burn CD's for transfer?

    1. Reformat your iPod as FAT32 with Disk Utility.
    2. Move your iTunes Music folder to your iPod in the Finder (Default is Home->Music->iTunes).
    3. Import your music into your PC's iTunes library (using "Add to library..." in iTunes). Make sure it's copying the music from your iPod to your PC's hard disk, which it should do by default but I'm not certain.
    4. Plug your iPod back into your Mac and reformat as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    Hope that works.

  • Video ipod not recognized by windows at all

My new video ipod suddenly cannot be recognized by Windows. I'm not really sure what happened - one day I was able to plug it in and have iTunes automatically start and sync, and now whenever I plug it in I just get the message "do not disconnect." Also, the iPod is not recognized by Windows - doesn't even show up in "My Computer," though it does show up in "Device Manager" and in the "Safely Remove Hardware" dialogue.
What could be wrong? I already uninstalled iTunes and Quicktime and reinstalled them, to no luck. I also installed the new iPod system software 1.3 but also no luck. Finally, I uninstalled all of my USB ports and forced Windows to reinstall them, but that didn't work either. The first time I put in the iPod after that I got a dialogue box that it had recongized the new hardware and was installing the iPod, but nothing ever came of it.
However, both iTunes and my video iPod are fully functional, and I have taken VERY good card of the video iPod.
Any idea what could be wrong???

I tried it, setting it to E. It didn't work. Tried the same thing after setting it to disk mode and it didn't work. Just the same old BS about "Do not disconnect," but it isn't recongized anywhere on the system except for Device Manager and the Disk Management tool you mentioned. No acknowledgement from iTunes or in My Computer. Meanwhile both iTunes and my iPod work fine, but they can't communicate with each other.
I AM GOING INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have tried every trick in the book that I could possibly think of. Not only did I uninstall and reinstall iTunes, QuickTime and the iPod helper, but after I uninstalled them I COMPLETELY nuked them, eliminating every file and clearing extraneous references out of the registry. Then I reinstalled from the CD going by the instructions by the letter. I thought for sure it would work now but for some ridiculous reason it doesn't.
I am completely at my wits' end.................. What the heck can I do???
PS: I also have Linux installed in a secondary extended partition, which is on my hard drive but not counted as C. Not sure if that makes any difference.

  • Using ipod w/ mac on windows

okay, my friend wants to hook his ipod up to my computer, and share some of my songs, but the problem is that he usually uses a mac with his ipod and i have windows on my computer..
if he wants to hook his ipod up to my computer will i have to reformat the ipod, and will that in turn delete his songs that he already has his ipod..
    please help!

"if he wants to hook his ipod up to my computer will i have to reformat the ipod, and will that in turn delete his songs that he already has his ipod"
Yep, Windows computers cannot read Mac formatted iPods (or anything else Mac formatted).
And in any event, are you asking us how to share copyrighted material?
I ask because if you are, the forum Mods (our Hosts) will remove the post.

    iPod: Frequently Asked Questions
Learn the answers to some of the frequently asked questions (FAQ) regarding iPod.
Question: I have both a Mac and a PC. Will my iPod work on both?
Answer: No, not at the same time. iPod is configured for either Mac or PC. You can use the iPod Updater to restore iPod to work with a Mac or a PC (depending on which version of the updater you use). See "Restoring iPod to factory settings" for more information. Note: Using the iPod for Mac on a PC, or using the iPod for Windows on a Mac, is not supported by Apple. FAT32 is the format used by Windows, and while some FAT32 iPod models may work with your Mac, Apple only supports using the iPod shuffle in FAT32 format on Mac. For more information see the iPod shuffle Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).
Question: Can I use an iPod formatted for Mac on a PC, or an iPod formatted for Windows on a Mac?
Answer: It is not possible to use an iPod formatted for Mac with Windows. This is because Windows does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive.
You can convert an iPod formatted for Windows into an iPod for Mac by using the iPod for Mac Software Updater on the Apple website. Note that once it is reformatted, it will only work with Macs. You need Mac OS 9.2 or Mac OS X 10.1 or later to reformat an iPod for Windows into an iPod for Mac.
Note: Using the iPod for Mac on a PC, or using the iPod for Windows on a Mac, is not supported by Apple.

  • Connect Ipod to Mac and Windows

I started to connect my Ipod to my Windows computer. Now I bought an Imac. I want to connect my Ipod to my mac without loose all the songs I have loaded to my Ipod from my Windows pc.
    Is that possible ?
    Thanks in advance for help.
    Cheers from Copenhagen - Frank

Strictly speaking using a Windows formatted iPod on a Mac isn't supported however many people use one without any issue. iTunes will allow you to use an iPod formatted for Windows on a Mac but Apple currently only supports using the iPod shuffle in FAT32 format on Mac. This means you will have to make sure that any time there is a software update available you do this on a PC. If you updated the software while the iPod was connected to the Mac you would end up erasing and formatting the iPod for Mac.
If you only intend using the iPod on the Mac from now on, you could transfer your songs to the computer and then Restore the iPod on your Mac. Restoring will erase and reformat the hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation: Restoring iPod to Factory Settings with iTunes 7
If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7 A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you prefer something more automated there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others as well, they are generally quite straightforward. • Mini DV Video - Storage for Mac and Windows

I have about 16 hours of miniDv video that I have imported through iMovie and is now saved on an External HD connected to my Time Capsule. I have a Windows machine wirelessly connected and I would like to be able to access these files. I do not seem to be able to open the saved files. Any thoughts on either how I could make this content readable by both Mac and Windows?

To read it in iMovie on Mac, your drive must be formatted as Mac OS Etended (journaled).
For Windows, you drive can be formatted FAT32 (readable and writable by Mac (but not by iMovie)) or
you can format as NTFS, which is read only by Mac.
Your best bet is to format a different drive as FAT32 and copy these files to it.

  • Updating Video IPod Once Formatted for Windows, Now Using Mac

The subject pretty much explains it all. I'm trying to update my ipod to the latest software version, but when I attempt to update it, it says that it can't be updated because the Ipod is already formatted to Windows.
What should I do about this situation?
    Thanks

i do not set to auto update. I see no real point in having 2 hard drives full of the same music. I have backed up my MP3s on 4 dvd's. I like to keep my hard drive clear for other projects.
There are tools to bring the songs back off the ipod. Maybe I'll let that run over night. The TV shows I purchased were on the windows machine. Maybe they will be lost forever.
I guess I won't be installing this update anytime soon.

  • How do I save tracks in order to format ipod from Mac to windows?

I have been given an ipod that was originally used on a Mac but i have Windows. Is there any way I can save the tracks before formatting it ?
When i plug in the ipod to my computer it only gives me the option of formatting it.
There are some 11 g's of music and i can't bear to lose it.
If backed up the music on a Mac could I then re-load the tracks from it once the ipod has been formatted for Windows?

Yes you could, Macs can read Windows formatted iPods. • IPod with Mac and windows

I currently have a 1st generation iPod Touch with the iTunes library on my macbook. I am using a windows xp system at the office which also had iTunes installed. Will I be able to sync the iPod with both computers or will this create an issue with the libraries?
    Thanks ahead of time!
    S

You can't sync can't sync iPod with multiple computers or libraries. If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer or with more than one library you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different:
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
    Syncing Music to iPod
