Video iPod restarting/rebooting?

As I play music - shuffle songs - I periodically forward along until I find the song I want. Lately, the iPod will turn itself off and back on again. I'll try to advance a song, then the screen will go black with the Apple logo appearing seconds later, then I'm back at song 1 again.
Has anyone had this happen to them?
Thanks

HI ok this is an exact post I answered to the same question on here but it solved my problem. its been like two weeks now and no problems at all no more resetting when skipping through songs
ok just an update to my previous post so it did once again the reseting that is so now what i did was contacted apple, they suggested that I download the ipod udpate and manually run that update to the ipod...so I did that and like a week or 2 ago and since then no resetting during it playing through the whole day and skipping through songs.
hope that helps out others here

  • Video IPod automatically reboots

Hi - I have a 30GB video IPod. I use it mostly for podcasts. Recently, when trying to load a podcast, the IPod reboots. I try to reload, and it reboots again. This has happened with a few other podcasts as well. Most other podcasts, songs, etc., load fine. I receive podcasts from the same site that run fine...any ideas? Thanks.

Any audio file that is encoded at 64kbps at a sample rate of 32.000 khz or higher in mono with your EQ on on your ipod on will crash it. Apple's answer to this is turn the EQ on your iPod off until they can fix the problem.
So if you turn the EQ off on your iPod it won't crash. The other thing you can do ishave each podcast start 1 sec into it within getinfo << otions << start time 1 sec good luck

  • Playing video causes iPod to reboot

    Hi there,
Seems as if I'm having a problem with my video playback. I just picked up a 60 gig 5th gen model, and everything has been great. However, attempting to change position on a video track (for instance, moving forward or backwards in a playing video) will sometimes cause the whole iPod to reboot.
So far I've not been able to recreate this on any videos downloaded from iTunes. It seems to only happen on the four .mp4's that I converted from .avi files... anyone have any ideas why this would occur? They are not mono, like those podcasts that had problems.

Since you have completely messed with your computer, you may want to wait for a verry experienced Discussions Member to help you, someone with over 3 bars...
Try being specific on what you have executed on services.msc, your iPod firmware version, and your iTunes firmware version (iPod should be at 1.1.1 for 5G iPod and 6.0.4 for iTunes).
I nominate bnoir, btabz or Masna to answer this a little better after you repost with specific information

  • 5.5 Gen Video Ipod rebooting when trying to play certain PodCasts.

    Hi,
After enjoying an Ipod Nano for a year and loving every minute, I went ahead and purchased the new 80GB Video iPod.
Its great but it has a tendency to reboot for no apparent reason when playing certain PodCasts. For example: Its impossible to play the Buzzcast episode: BuzzCast 09/27/06 - "Microsoft protects your ****". The Ipod shuts off and reboots every time. I'm using Itunes 7.0.1 and the Ipod is running the latest available firmware.
Can anyone else who also owns the new 80GB iPod download this particular episode and confirm?
By the way, I've also noticed that even though the iPod is connected / docked with iTunes and clearly visible in the panel to the left, The message "Waiting for iPod" is displayed when trying to re-sync a while later. The only way to get iTunes to make contact with the iPod again is to physically disconnect the cable and reconnect, (even though the iPod icon was still clearly visible to the left thus indicating already established contact with the iPod) Weird!
    Anyone else having this experience?
    Input appreciated.
    Kind regards / Alex

WHAT was apple thinking when they released iTunes 7.0 and firmware 1.2!? I installed in on my 60gb Video and the whole thing went to pot.
    1. It sounded horrible
    2. It would only allow me to download about 25% of my movies to the iPod (I have a large library and I take movies on and off depending on what I feel like for the trip I am taking.)
AppleCare Support was USELESS. Here is what I finally figured out to get the pod working right again:
    1. Uninstalled iTunes 7 from my computer (PC).
    2. Went into the registry editor and deleted all remaining references to iTunes.
    3. Restored the firmware to the version that came with the iPod last January.
    4. Used the 2006.06.28 firmware updater
    5. Installed iTunes 6.0.5
It works like a charm, just like it did before Apple "made things better."
AppleCare told me that they could not support songs ripped from my CD's, or any video that had not been purchased from iTunes. I am certain that the reason for this had nothing to do with their wanting a monopoly on music and video that will work on an iPod. Then he offered to report the problem I was having to their development team.
I asked him if other people were having problems with iTunes 7. He said the question was not relevant to my problems! I pressed him more for an answer and he continued to parrot what Apple has obviously told him to say. "My new 80gb Video is working fine. I have not had the problems you are having."
    DON'T UPGRADE TO ITUNES 7!!!!
I have ordered an 80gb since he said they work so flawlessly. Reading in this discussion, it appears that plenty of new 80gb users are frustrated too.

  • Ipod Restarts during videos

I just got a new Ipod last night. Between then and tody I loaded a couple videos on it that I downloaded from Itunes. I downloaded them just for the purpose of seeing if the Ipod would play them. All seemed ok - I got them loaded on after light troubleshooting, but when I go to play the videos from my Ipod, the Ipod will restart after about 20 seconds. The video loads fine, looks and sounds awesome, then all the sudden you get the black screen with the apple logo. I have tested this with more then one video.
Any ideas as to what I might be doing wrong? I really want to figure this out, as the video feature is what pushed me into buying this.
    Thanks in advance!

I noticed that, while the Ipod is plugged in and ejected from Itunes, it will play an entire video with no flaws.
It is only when I am running off the battery that I have this problem. I thought maybe my battery was shot, but, after the Ipod restarts, the battery meter is still full, and I can start playing songs from there with no troubles.
So it would seem this re-starting problem only happens when I am running off the battery - but not when I am plugged into my USB.
Should I still give that Ipod Updater a shot? Or does this sound like it might be something else?

  • 30 Gig Video iPod reboots when playing certain podcasts

    Hi everyone,
I listen to an audio podcast called Diggnation. I usually put it on my iPod so I can listen to it in the car on my way to/from work.
I have posted about this over at the Revision 3 forums. Here is the thread for anyone who may be interested:
    http://www.revision3.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2149
To sum up: I have tried turning off the EQ (as suggested in the Apple Knowledge base article here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304490) and it does NOT make a difference. My iPod still reboots. Aside from that, disabling functionality on my iPod is not an acceptable solution. Especially when this problem doesn't exist on older iPods (I had a friend with an older one test this for me.) My iPod ought to be able to play a simple MONO MP3 file.
If anyone else wants to try this, I had the problem with the November 9th, November 23rd, and November 30th episodes of Diggnation that I downloaded through iTunes. The only thing I've found in common with all 3 of those files is that they are all MONO and not stereo. The Nov 16th version was stereo and did not cause me any reboot issues. If I convert these problem files to WAV and back to a stereo MP3, I have no reboot problems.
I have tried resetting my iPod. I have tried removing the podcast from my iPod and copying a new download of it back on to the iPod - no difference.
Any suggestions? Or does anyone at Apple know what's going on here?
    Thanks.

The only thing I've found in common with all 3 of
those files is that they are all MONO and not stereo.
The Nov 16th version was stereo and did not cause me
any reboot issues. If I convert these problem files
to WAV and back to a stereo MP3, I have no reboot
    problems
Why not simply convert them to stereo MP3? You don't
need to first convert them to WAV.
Well, if I use the MP3 conversion in itunes, the file still reboots my iPod. So I have to use another program to convert it to a WAV and then back to MP3 - there are probably other programs out there that can do this in one step, but the one I already had requires the extra step. Besdies, I shouldn't have to do this at all. It should just work, shouldn't it?
Aside from that, disabling functionality on my
iPod is not an acceptable solution.
You are right. It's obvious that turning off the EQ
is simply a workaround until it gets fixed.
    Oh, wait, it's fixed.
Update your iPod with the newest firmware (1.2.1)
Well, please note that when I started this thread, I was indeed up to date on both the latest version of iTunes and the latest version of the available firmware.
I just tried this update (1.2.1) and it seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks, apple!

  • Computer not recognizing ipod as video ipod

Hi, I purchased a 30G video iPod today and did not install the CD that came with it. I already had the software installed for my 4th Gen 20G iPod so I thought I could just plug in my new pod using that software. It occurred to me that I should have installed the new software. So I did.
But now I think it's not actually recognizing the new iPod as a 5th Gen video iPod because it's not allowing me to view any mpg files that I downloaded onto it. I can view the TV shows that I purchased from iTunes fine.
I've tried updating the iPod software and restarted, but it still doesn't recognize the mpgs. Do I need to reformat the new iPod? I'm an idiot.
Any help would greatly be appreciated!

Since my iPod was correctly recognized on another similar OS X 10.4.6 system, the problem must lay in the 10.4.6 system that exhibits the problem and not in the iPod itself. Looking at the iPod Updater 2006-03-23 (the installer for the updater, not the updater itself) with Pacifist (which lets you examine the packages included) there is an installer for System UI Server embedded in the updater installer. Running the update installer and selecting a custom install shows that the SUIS (System UI Server) package is unavailable--probably because it is for an older system (10.3.x ?). Using Pacifist, I forced an install of the SUIS package and rebooted--the system was a bit unstable. I then ran the 10.4.6 Combo Updater on top of that (I had tried just the 10.4.6 Combo Updater earlier in today, but it alone didn't hep). This time the Combo Updater removed the system problems and both iTunes and the iPod Updater 2006-03-23 application both recognized the iPod as a video iPod (I have the black model and its icon should show up as black at all times). Music correctly copies now.
This was a deep rooted system problem that reveals some deep issues with the software updater designs.

  • Video Ipod frozen

I have had my video ipod for about a month now and i just bought some software to convert dvds to ipod format. It worked, but when i was watching the dvd, my ipod froze. I clicked menu and put it to sleep. I then turned it back on and clicked on now playing. When i did, It went to a black screen with the backlight on. I have tried reseting it and hooking it up to my computer, but nothing has worked. I need some ideas.

If the normal reset doesn't work, there isn't anything left to try...... except this one thing. Yesterday, there was a thread. About ten people in this thread had the same problem as you and nothing worked. A guy came on, posted this reset method and everyone was jumping for joy. I'd never heard of it before, so if you try it, PLEASE POST BACK AND LET US KNOW IF IT WORKS...
    1. switch hold on and off and reset the pod normaly.
    2. If the Pod reboots push Center and Play until the Pod turn off
    3. Flick the hold-switch on and off slowly (one on and off per second or slower) until the Pod restarts with the normal black screen with the apple. If the iPod is not reborn after 10 switches wait a little an restart the procedure at 1.

  • IPod Continuous Reboot

i have a 60gb 5g iPod that I have owned for about 2 years. last night, when I was switching artists that i was listening to, the HD started making its seeking noises while it was spinning and refused to switch to the other track. this had happened to me before, so i rebooted the iPod and went back to the main menu but showed that i had NOTHING on the iPod - all of my music and videos were gone.
so, i proceeded to restart it again and plug it into my laptop. the ipod was recognized briefly by iTunes and i started backing up everything off the iPod thinking that the HD was going bad. after copying about 100 megs of stuff off of the ipod, the copy stopped and the ipod restarted.
now the ipod is stuck in a continuous reboot loop, backlight off and apple logo on the screen. i am able to get this into disk mode but it is not recognized by my computer. i can also put it into diagnostic mode. i can feel the HD spin up but it just wont boot into the iPod OS or be recognized by iTunes (in either disk mode or normal mode). there is not rockbox or iPod linux installed on my ipod nor have i done anything with iPod Wizard
so... is the HD bad? i do not get a sad mac or a folder icon when turning the ipod on.

I'm having the same problem with my ipod, i guess my best bet is to take it to the apple store

  • Video iPod keeps crashing since latest firmware update

This has happened to me several times since the last update. Playing certain podcasts will cause the ipod to crash and reboot. Worst case was today. I had 4 unplayed episodes of the podcast 'Universe Today'. I clicked on one, the iPod crashed, rebooted and when I went back to that podcast directory 3 of the 4 episodes were gone (no longer listed) and the 4th was an empty file. All episodes play properly in iTunes. Very frustrating! Since I don't play games on my iPod, I guess the next step is to restore it to a previous rev.

    Hello there Xpectro,
Thank you for asking your question. It sounds like after you upgraded to Mavericks the computer started quitting unexpectedly. I would start by checking the disk for errors with the Disk Utility and repairing any that are found.
Disk Utility 12.x: Repair a disk
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5836
If the issue persists or the no errors are found I would try resetting the SMC and performing a Safe Boot in that order.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

The instructions are different depending on the type of MacBook Pro you have.
    and
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564?viewlocale=en_US
    Starting up in Safe Mode
To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), follow these steps.
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key.
The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
After the logo appears, you should see a progress bar during startup. This indicates that your computer is performing a directory check as part of Safe Mode.
To leave Safe Mode, restart your computer without holding any keys during startup.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,

  • Error 1418 on BRAND NEW Video ipod - Only 48 hours old!

    Hi,
Just upgraded from a click wheel ipod to a new 80GB video Ipod. Installed itunes 7.02 and everything worked fine. Last night got the message saying an update was avaliable for my ipod so I clicked update and since then I get the following messages
    1. The ipod could not be read from or written to.
    2. The ipod is in recovery mode and needs to be restored
    3. Unknown error - 1418
    I have tried
    1. 5r's
    2. Reformat through windows
The ipod now says it is corrupt and needs to be restored through itunes but itunes only returns the 1418 message.
I have googled this to death and there seems to be alot of issues with the new firmware. I am really annoyed as I havent even had chance to listen to my music yet and ive spent alot of money on it.
Any one have any ideas please, any other Video users had a similar problem after the firmware update?
    Thanks

The link works for me. However, here's the post.
iTunes7 & 5th gen iPod updating - is this possible solution? (winXP)

Downloaded iTunes 7 and you've gone through the 5 R's until your red in the face?
    * This probable solution 'stumbled upon' using a 60GB video. I have no idea if the process will work the same for nano. But if your desperate and have backed up your library... full steam ahead.
If you've noticed that your iPod does not show up in My Computer, but shows up in iTunes, and the new Update or Restore option within iTunes (Summary tab of a recognized iPod) doesn't work (choosing 'Update' gives you error 1417 and 'Restore' gives you error 1418 - whatever they mean) then give this a try:
    1. Restart your computer - just to make sure we're all on the same page
    2. Start up/Load iTunes
    3. Connect your iPod to your computer - it may take a little time for iTunes to connect to your device
    4. When the dialogue box pops up telling you that a new version of firmware (ver. 1.2) is available choose: INSTALL
    5. As iTunes shows you a progressive bar of 'installing' (the bar scrolls across again and again) use the "Safely Remove Hardware" option in your taskbar and stop "Apple iPod USB Device". The computer will then tell you that the device can now be removed
    6. "Installing" continues... plug in/connect iPod again. The "Install" continues like nothing's happened. Weird, huh?
    7. Apple logo and Update status bar should now appear on your dimmed iPod screen (because of no backlight)
    8. At this point, dialogue box pops up on computer to tell you that updating continues
    9. "Do Not Disconnect" symbol will then show on your iPod
    10. Process finishes after a time, and now the Summary tab says the iPod has been updated.
HA!!! If this is all that troubles you - HUZZAH! And I hope this helped.
Now that we've come this far... I've found that when I normally open iTunes and plug in my iPod to aunto-sync, I now get ERROR (-50) -> Mac needs to get a database online or something to tell me what these 'errors' mean so I don't freak out when I get one...
    1. Go BACK to the Summary tab or your recognized deive in iTunes. Now choose RESTORE. Make sure whatever is on your iPod can be replaced
    2. This part takes time
    3. Computer will pop with dialogue box saying that iPod is restored and being changed to factory settings
    4. Prompt then pops up for you to name your little iPod. At this stage you can choose to 'Auto-sync songs and vids when connected' or 'Auto-sync photos' and from which directory. It's up to you.
    5. iTunes will then thank you for registering your iPod. From this point, the files are copied to your device. Depending on how large your library is affects how long this process takes.

Action: Tried it on my iMac G4 thinking I could reformat it. Mac understandably does not read it as a drive. I tried the following three connections:

    QUESTIONS:
Has the 5G iPod reached a point where it now pulls too much power to be read by USB? Is HP not giving me correct specs regarding the performance of the Notebook's USB? Why can I update my iPods with firewire on my Mac but not the PC? Any suggestions regarding what I should try next?
    Thanks.
HP Pavilion dv notebook Windows XP

Solution was found: HP was encountering a conflict with a trial version of Symantec Security Center and Norton Anti-Virus causing an incomplete install of iTunes.
The following actions resolved the problem. Uninstalled both Symantec applications, uninstalled QuickTime 6*, installed QuickTime 7.1.3 (iTunes would not install successfully prior to this step, seems redundant but worked), installed iTunes 7.1 (with Quicktime 7.1.3 again), connected iPod 5G which was finally recognized, received error that iPod was currupted, restored iPod and is now working fine.
I hope that this helps someone else with similar video iPod problems.

  • 60G video iPod with +15G free can't see iPhoto albums, -50 error

Everything had been running smoothly in my 60G video iPod with photos and videos and music. With more than 15G free on my iPod, space isn't an issue. For reference, I have iPhoto 6 and iTunes 6, both completely updated (as is QuickTime). I've deleted the iPod photo cache on the hard drive. And, because of a previous iPhoto problem, I've rebuilt my system from the hard drive up recently.
Here's the problem: I don't know why iTunes "suddenly" can't see the iPhoto albums. It can see the iPhoto library, but won't let me select specific albums. I don't want all my photos on my iPod, plus it's a +30G photo library so it wouldn't all fit anyway. All I know about what happened right before this problem is, and I quote:
    Q: "What happened?"
A: "That beachball thing spun for like 5 minutes so I restarted."
Q: "What application were you using at the time?"
    A: "Who knows?"
(To which I'm desperately thinking "Count to 10, you're the adult...count to 10, you're the adult...")
In hunting around on my hard drive, I can also see that there are a bunch of random gifs and jpegs in the Pictures folder. It looks like the Apple website blew up, piece by piece (a gif for each tab across the top, for example) along with some widgets and something I don't recognize.
After deleting my iPod photo cache, I could get iTunes to start updating the iPod again, but now it doesn't see anything but the whole iPhoto library. I tried selecting the whole library, but I got the -50 error again (can't update, error unknown). I use the iPod extensively as a traveling photo album, and now (because I deleted the iPod photo cache I assume) I don't have ANY pictures.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Fixed!
Adding new photographs to my Library seems to have sorted the problem out. So if anyone else has this problem, a holiday to Amsterdam is the cure

  • Video ipod update Freeze

having just installed the updated software for my video ipod,
when playing movies the picture freezes after 30 seconds or so
and then plays without sound! I have tried to reset numerous times but it does not help. music and picture files are fine though.

If you don't want to wade through all the responses, I'm copying here an extract of the answer I gave in that thread:
For those people like me who don't have firmware 1.0, I've modified the procedure a bit to suit our purpose. Here's what needs to be done for downgrading to firmware 1.0 without losing any data for new iPods that only come with firmware 1.1 Installation CD:
-Connect your iPod to your computer, ensures its updated via iTunes, then disconnect it from PC and exit iTunes
    - Download iPodSetup 2005-11-17 here:
    http://appldnld.m7z.net/content.info.apple.com/iPod/ww/win/061-2225.20051128.PDW nw/iPodSetup.exe
    - Download iPodWizard here:
    http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=153441
(download the release, top link of the two)
    - Uninstall iPod for Windows 2006-1-10 and reboot
    - Install iPodSetup 2005-11-17
-Connect your iPod to PC, make sure iTunes is not running
    -Launch iPodWizard.
-In the top left, click "Open Updater"
-Locate the iPod Updater.exe located in a sub-folder where you just installed iPodSetup 2005-11-17
-In the "Firmware:" drop down menu, select "5th Generation iPod (v.13.6.0)"
-Click "Load" just to the right of the drop down menu
-In the iPodWizard Essentials box on the right, it should say "Found 1 iPod drives:"
-Click "Downgrade Firmware". I'ts very quick.
    -Close the iPodWizard
-Again, make sure iTunes is not running
-From your Start menu, run iPod Updater 2005-11-17 and click "Update", not "Restore"
-Once the update is completed (it takes a few minutes), exit the iPod Updater and run it again to view the new firmware number. It should read:
