Video iPod setting preferences, updating of videos

I have a 5th Gen. Video iPod which works very well but I'm a bit confused about using it with two computers and having downloads from Music Store coming into one or the other one. Plus under the Preferences area, Videos, it is checked 'Do not update videos' but it is greyed out so I can't even select auto update or manual =
1. is the Videos choices greyed out because they're automatically set because this is a video ipod? it doesn't seem to let me choose whether to update or not
2. I have a G5 and a 12" Powerbook and this iPod. Sometimes I'm finding things at the Music Store, including videos, on my G5, but I use the video iPod with the Powerbook. I've set up Music, Podcasts and Photos for manual updates. But what about Videos? I don't see a way to set that up and am concerned I'll download videos to the G5 but then not be able to move them to the video iPod, or the 12" PB which is my main video computer.
Thanks.

You have a good suggestion ....so, because I set up
ViPod to get music and podcasts manually that will
control the video selections? I'll check out your
explanation...seems logical. Much thanks.
Right. If you set your iPod to automatically update music, it will automatically update videos. However, as you use two different computers, that may not work for you.

  • Using a second computer with an ipod set to manual update

I want to prevent my ipod 60GB video which is set to manual update on my G5 from being updated when I plug it into my powerbook. The powerbook assumes the ipod is available for auto update. How do I mount the iPod without iTunes automatically replacing its contents. I can't "preset" iTunes in its preferences to treat the iPod as a manual drive as it just says: "no iPod connected. As soon as I attach the iPod the auto update starts. Are there keystrokes to interrupt the update so I can set the iPod preferences on my Powerbook?
    Thanks

Hold down the ⌥ and ⌘ keys while connecting your iPod. Keep them down until iTunes has opened and your iPod shows in the Source list.

  • Cannot update 5G iPod setting after 1.2 update...

Has anyone else run into this problem. I updated to iTunes 7 today along with the 1.2 update for my 5G iPod. I am running Mac OS X.
After the update, my video playlists were removed from the iPod. Checking the iPod setting showed that the video playlist were no longer checked to auto sync. The problem is my iPod will not stay connected long enough for me to update this option. The iPod is recognized when I connect for once iTunes realizes the songs are up to date, the iPod disconnects. If I check to sync the video playlist and apply, an error message will appear saying that the iPod could not be found.
Any ideas or anyone else have this?

Ok well, i'm having a problem updating my ipod. Are you saying i should not even attempt to update and be glad for the block? I keep getting error messages.
But i totally agree with you. I'm frustrated. I can't add songs to my ipod and itunes won't even recognize the ipod. I've tried reverting to v6 and tried restoring as well. Always ending up with ERROR. Apple should have tested every version on every OS system. How long could that take??? 2 weeks with as many ppl working as they do. If i asked alll the ppl who had trouble with this new version if they could wait 2 weeks for a perfected version, what would they say?? THEY WOULD SAY FREAKING YES!
I would also agree that for close to $500CDN for an ipod... it should definitely last longer than a year. I'd say at least 3 or 4.
And if it does come to the end [ipod dying] i won't buy another. I think i will go back to the retro days of bought and burned cds on my trusty sony cd player.

  • Are all security updates automatic or can I set preferences?

I was out for a couple of hours. When I came back to my Macbook I had a notification that a security update had been installed.
    1) Is there any record anywhere of what update was installed?
    2) Do I have any choice or can I set preferences about when and if downloads/updates happen and are installed?
I know there is a list here: Apple security updates - Apple Support
but I want to know if there is place on my machine where i can see the updates and compare  . . just to see if, for example the December 22 update is installed.
I can also see other updates in the app store but I don't see any security updates and the updates that are listed there don't have any dates attached.
    Thanks very much,
    Michael

Thanks, I did have that setting checked for security updates but I guess it hasn't happened automatically, if ever. In fact, this article seems to be saying this was the first automatic one ever?
    http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/12/23/us-apple-cybersecurity-idUSKBN0K108W20 141223
So, is there a place that I can see what security updates have been installed?
I can see all the app updates in the app store but not security "patches."
    Thanks again,
    Michael

  • IPod cannot be updated Unknown error-48

Help - have installed iTunes 7.0.1 and am trying to keep ALL the music on my iPod so have tried to set the options to manual update. But although the computer senses the iPod is connected, when I try and drag new files to my iPod, I get the message "iPod cannot be updated Unknown error-48" Any advice gratefully received

    Hey!
Just an update since last week.
Still comes up with the "Unknown Error_48" when coupled to the Mac.Doesn't sync to iTunes and says it's upto date in the summary.Never had any issues like this (until iTunes 7 and 1.2).Kinda renders the whole iPod thing a bit useless.
Being able to update the library on your Pod is essential.Otherwise what's the point? My Pod still 'works'but not quite the way Apple intended I think.
    SORT IT OUT APPLE!!

  • IPod Won't Update with New Playlists and Audio Only

My iPod will not update new playlists that have been created or add any audio files from iTunes. Videos come over just fine. Powerbook 12" G4 with 10.4.4, iTunes 6.0.2. Latest iPod software, 0106, deleted the old iPod updates. Also, did a hard reset on the iPod.
Under my administrator test login, playlists and songs come over fine, but I can't seem to get it to work in my regular account. Any idea what do do without reformatting my hard drive and reloading software?

I also just started having this trouble on my 6 month old nano. I have it set to automatically update selected playlists only. I update the songs in those playlists in itunes, then I connect my ipod to my PC. The ipod and itunes say it is updating, but when done the same old songs are on the playlists in the ipod. Itunes does show the correct playlists with the update songs, they just don't seem be updating on the ipod, even though there seems to be a good connection and the ipod says it is updating when plugged into the PC. Any thoughts?

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    iRepo Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Once you have recovered the songs from your iPod and you are happy that everything back is safely back in iTunes then restore the iPod. Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists choose no and it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

  • New iPod won't update

I recently purchased an iPod with video to replace my mini. I registered my iPod video on itunes and it shows up on the device list. However, when I connect it to my computer the "Do not disconnect" keeps flashing and itunes bar says that it is updated. I have the most current version of itunes, have restarted my computer, restarted my ipod, I have even tried to restore. I have had it plugged in for 45 minutes now and the "Do not disconnect" will not go away! I have tried everything I could think of. PLEASE HELP!!!!

This Apple knowledge-base article may help address that issue.
    Strange iPod behaviour.
As to the "do not disconnect" message.
If you have your iPod set to automatically sync with iTunes version 7 or later, connect the iPod and when you see the summary screen, uncheck the box marked "enable disk use".
If you are using an earlier version of iTunes, right click on the iPod in the source list, select options and uncheck the same box.
In future your iPod should automatically disconnect after it’s finished transferring music.
One other thing. When posting here on Apple Discussions, beware of points trolls.

  • Does putting ipod on manual update

Does putting your iPod on manual update mean that I can put the songs on my laptop on it, and then go to my desktop computer and put those songs on it without deleting what was on it already?

Yes it does. If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. In this mode you can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library:
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
    Managing content manually on iPod
    iPod 101: Fill 'er Up
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod

  • IPod will not update AT ALL

I have owned this iPod Shuffle for about seven months, and it worked perfectly fine until about a month or two ago when it would not let me change the songs on the iPod. I manually deleted all the songs off of the iPod in iTunes, and added a whole new set, but when I put on the headphones, the original music was all still on the iPod, despite it saying that music had been deleted and added. I lived with it for a while, but now the music is getting extremely boring, as I am constantly adding more tracks to iTunes, which I can ONLY listen to on it or by making CDs. No point in having an iPod if I can get better variety from a CD player. So I used the Restore command, but it did not change anything except apparently clean the songs off the iPod (they could still be on there, I'm about to check), either way I still cannot add anything to the iPod.
More to the point, whenever I try to update the iPod in any way (add music, change the preferences, etc.) it says that it is Updating and then after about a minute and a half it gives this message:
The iPod "Owner's iPod" cannot be updated. The disk could not be read from or written to.
The amount of memory does not change: Used: 300 KB, Free: 489.5 MB. Which is the factory settings I assume.
    Pentium(R) 4   Windows XP

Update: I tried the iPod out and I now get the flashing green orange lights when I press play that I have seen so much about on this forum.

  • The ipod "IPOD" cannot be updated.  The disk could not be read from or.....

The ipod "IPOD" cannot be updated. The disk could not be read from or written to. First, what disk is this talking about. Also, when i "update" my ipod none of my videos get transfered to the ipod any more. Couple weeks ago the series "Monk" was always transferred from itunes to the ipod, but now, it doesnt show up on my ipod. When i go to the ipod options and select the videos tab, it doesnt let me choose to manually update the videos or automatically do it.

It's referring to the iPod's hard drive, see if any of the troubleshooting steps in this article help: "-36 or "Disk cannot be read from or written to" when syncing iPod or "Firmware update failure" error when updating or restoring iPod

  • IPod cannot be updated. Unknown error (-208)

I have all latest updates installed on both Mac and iPod.
Keep getting error message that says "iPod cannot be updated. Unknown error occurred (-208).
But, after I dismiss this dialogue box, the iPod updates with no problems.
How do I get rid of this? Is there a problem?
2.1 GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   iTunes 7.0.1 (7); iTunes 30 GB video play capable, software version 1.2

    Hi there guys,
I had the same problem and have just fixed it for me. I used the process of elimination. If you go to your ipod summary and make slight changes to what you want to sync with your ipod and keep applying the changes until you get no error message. This will tell you where the error is. For me, when I chose not to sync photos with the ipod, I no longer got the error message.
I had a feeling from looking at other peoples problems that it may be to do with the files being corrupt or just slightly wrong(it's only a minor glitch) that you're wanting to sync. When I went to my folder I realised I had two versions of my 'Ipod Photo Cache' (not sure what the Windows equivalant is, i think it's basically where it stores the ipod versions of your photos on your hard drive) and the new version was in the wrong place. I then replaced the old with the new and voila. No more errors. (I now just have error -48 to contend with)
    Hope that helps, God bless

  • IPod cannot be updated because it contains files in use by anaother applica

Whenever I try to update my 60gb iPod, it tells me:
iPod cannot be updated because it contains files in use by anaother application.
How do I stop this from happening & applow my iPod to update?
It's preventing me from watching some recent video downloads.

Re: First Gen. Nano and 30 gig video
I have been getting this same error on both of above referenced iPods that I have. I have tried to post questions on ipodgarage, and no one can answer this. I am seeing more and more people post this same problem.
C'mon Apple. What is going on with this? Please help us. This problem only started happening after updating to iTunes 7.0.
