Video is not importing, only audio

I am trying to import a video to do a couple really quick edits (I just need to trim a few seconds off each end and would like to use a fade in/out transition at the beginning and end), but when I import the video, it doesn't work. I can hear the audio playing, but I only see a static frame shot for the video. Nothing ever changes/moves.
First I imported it as a .mov file, but then I read somewhere that .mov doesn't play nice with iMovie. So I converted it to an mp4 movie file. I can watch both (undedited) versions in Quicktime without any issues, so I don't believe there is anything wrong with the original file or the conversion.
Any ideas of what I am doing wrong?

One thing I forgot to mention: The original video was shot on my Nikon D7000 in HD and was imported into Lightroom for a couple quick color corrections. Then it was exported from Lightroom. The exported/edited video plays perfectly in Quicktime. So there is some sort of breakdown between in iMovie's capability to import the video.

this and another video did not import. all the regular photos did.
video from another camera imported a video earlier so I know its working.
did not get any error message that the file was too big, etc.
Ideas as to why the videos did not import? File too big? If so, how to fix?
The videos are on a card on a Nikon Coolpix camera.

thx. most videos taken are 1-3 minutes. One of the kids cranked out a long video and no one knew what to do about it. Never knew about image capture. Thx for the help. All the vids downloaded fine as you instructed.

  • Only CERTAIN videos will not import in BOTH versions of iMovie

Heya, I'm dying here, hoping someone can help:
I've been filming video with my camera, but for some reason, one out of every 6 or 7 times a file will absolutely not import into iMovie.
They play absolutely fine with audio and everything in Quicktime, but when I try to import to iMovie '08, they simply do not show up as thumbnails even though it goes through the whole "creating thumbnails" process.
When I try importing them into iMovie HD 6, I get a "file cannot be imported: unknown error" message.
Everything else I film with my camera and import into either version of iMovie works just fine! It's only certain ones... but it always happens to be the most important clips!
There's GOT to be some way to fix this, right?

Everything was filmed with the exact same settings.
Your argument here is "inductive" and does not confirm that all stored files are in fact in the same compression format and settings. You need to apply a "deductive" approach. As I implied and QT Kirk specifically stated, you need to actually examine the files to determine their internal specifications -- comparing the working with non-working files to look for differences.
I've tried Streamclip, but when I try to save it as an avi, mpeg, dv, or even a renamed mov file, it says "Error: Could not prepare clip"
If your are trying to use the "Save As..." option here, you are not, in fact, performing a "conversion" but rather merely attempting to place the same content in a different file container. MPEG Streamclip does not, for instance, have the ability to export non-MPEG2 content to MPEG (MPEG-2 'muxed" or elementary streams) which would be incompatible with iMovie '08 in any event. As to AVI, you mush have one of the required AVI QT components installed and the compression formats you are trying to place in the AVI container must be compatible with the AVI container which is itself compatible with iMovie '08 as long as its contents are already edit compatible. As to DV, this one one usually difficult to mess up unless you were trying to turn it into a transport stream.
today I tried taking the original quicktime MOV file from the camera (the one that plays just fine in quicktime AND streamclip, just won't convert or import)
This statement seems to imply that something is wrong with your attempted work flow. If the file opens and plays in the QT Player and MPEG Streamclip, then it should be convertible. Once again, the primary problem is determining how to best perform this conversion which is why Karsten, QT Kirk, and I need specific information regarding the actual compression format, whether or not the compression settings were compatible with the QT structure, and whether or not an extraneous track (e.g., a "Tweener") might be causing difficulties. Posting a screen capture of the "Inspector" and/or "Properties" window or a sample file should provide the needed information.

  • Can't get h264 footage to import, only audio?

I'm brand new to Premiere. I have a simple project to edit and thought it would be perfect to get my hands dirty in CS6.
Unfortunately, I've already run into some problems.
    • I can't import any h264 footage. I primarily shoot on a Canon 7d, and have a lot of 1920 x 1080 h264s. I was hoping to edit natively, as this is one of Premiere's selling points -- but when I import the footage, it shows it as an ".mov" file, yet no video plays, only audio. In fact, it won't even display a frame rate for the video -- rather than reading 23.976 like it should, it reads "48000 Hz". Why is it only reading the audio?
These files play normally in quicktime.
    Any help?
Separate question, but regarding the same project.
This footage was shot in 24 fps, but just looked at final export requirements and I'll need it in 30 fps.
    • Should I edit in 24 fps, and then try to somehow convert to 30? How?
    • Should I edit in a 24 fps or a 30 fps sequence?
    • What options do I have with 3:2 pulldown vs compression?
    • Any recommendations of what point in the process i need to do a conversion or compression.
Again, I'm working in Cs6 on a Mac.
Let me know any other questions regarding specs.
    Thanks!

Hi katevers34 - welcome to the forum!
I have found that giving those portrait pics a very minor edit in Photoshop has fixed the problem - any adjustment at all, perhaps a slight colour shift. Now you may not have Photoshop, but doing the same thing in iPhoto would most likely suffice as well. I'm sure that in iPhoto you could select all of those pics (Command-Click on each one) and in the Edit > Adjust window, make a minor change to them all in one action e.g. a tiny sharpness adjustment.
Post back if it doesn't work for you.

  • Premiere 7.2.2 not importing all audio channels of mpeg-ts

I'm trying to work on an MPEG-TS, but Premiere is only importing the audio related to the first PID.  There are 6 PIDs in this file, each with two channels of audio, for 12 channels total.  But Premiere only sees the first two.  If I open the file up in Telestream Switch I see all 12 channels.  MediaInfo output is below, any thoughts?  Is this a bug in Premiere?  An import setting I've missed?

Not certain about HDV but using DV it used to work something like this ...
    - Log the clip then do your capture of the video and Ch 1+2
    - In the Log and Capture window select the Clip Settings Tab
Set Capture to AUDIO ONLY and the AUDIO FORMAT to Ch 3 + Ch 4
    - Right clic on the clip in the Browser and Select 'Batch Capture'.
    - in the Batch Capture dialog box, uncheck 'Use Logged Clip Settings'
click ok and away you go.
in the fwiw catagory, on some cameras, in order to hold 4 channels of audio it will be recorded in 32k/12bit format. It will not be happy in FCP. You may want to up rez it to 48k/16bit in Quicktime before using it. But you probably knew that.
    good luck.

  • Video will not play, yet audio does.

Like the header says, all of a sudden I go to work on a project I've never had trouble with and the video will not play; it is frozen wherever the cursor is. Yet the audio does play. I've tried clearing cache, clearing premiere cache, gone all over the internet to try and find an answer, of course India is closed right now, so no help there, not that they really give it anyway. So I'm asking if anyone might have experienced this one and figured it out despite Adobe. I'm on a PC with Windows 8 and terabytes and terabytes of storage; plenty of space left on disc, too. As I said; this has never been even a hint of a problem Just started up today. This even beats most Adobe "beta testing" problems they heap on us unsuspecting sheep. So I'm completely flummoxed. A prize to whoever knows what's up with this! It's a new one on me... Thanks in advance to whichever genius knows the answer! :-)

OK, I found the answer by myself and wish to share it with those having the same issue. It turns out that the saved workspace can corrupt allowing audio to play, while video remains frozen. The fix is to change the workspace. Go to WINDOW, after creating a new style workspace and save the new workspace. Problem fixed. Also, if there are already a number of other saved workspaces that involve video you can simply change to that one and it will be fixed. Delete the corrupt workspace. That's it! This was discovered through a simple process of elimination which proves that bugs really can surface anywhere for no intuitive reason. Hope this helps you!

  • No video in Viewer/Canvas, only audio

I use Final Cut Pro X since Day One and I survived bugs and endless beachballs on my 2011 17' Macbook Pro.
A week ago FCPX stopped playing any video in viewer/canvas while scrubbing. Only audio is audible. Impossible previewing a single clip or playing the timeline. The beachball is immediate and the program hangs and need forced exit. This happens whatever the video source is: only audio plays. Same reinstalling from scratch 10.0.4. Trashing preferences and using quickfix from Digitalrebellion didin't help.
A momentary solution has been creating a new administrator user and working from there, with many limitation and commodities I have "on the other side".
I can't identify anything particular that might have caused this! Quicktime runs fine and so do Final Cut Pro 7, iMovie and all the video compartement.
I searchead the web but nobody seems to have follen in this situation.

Have the same problem. Did you ever find answer?

  • When I sync my iphone to be able to import all the photos from a specific photo album onto my iphone.. why do the videos included not import?!

So I used to have an iPhone 5 with 7000+ photos inc videos. I finally decided to free up some memory by exporting the entire camera roll into a specific folder on my windows pc. In the album are all the photos and videos, matching the content from my camera roll (obviously). Now I have the 5S and would like the entire library of photos back into my photos app. So obviously it was as simple as plugging in my iPhone and clicking the photos tab, then 'Sync Photos from' and choosing that specific folder that I had previous exported my camera roll into. I then ticked the include videos checkbox. After the sync was completed, I then went onto my photo album and found the correct album being listed. However the number of photos on the iphone album did not match the number of photos in the actual album on my windows pc. Then I realised the reason.. the videos have not transferred? I've tried resyncing several times. iTunes identifies the album to exist the correct number of photos/videos as it should do, yet my iphone still has not imported any videos. Is there anything i'm doing wrong?! Thanks in advance for any help.

Seems that you can no longer hide them on your phone.  Try doing so in iTunes: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4919.

  • HT3290 Video will not import after updating my iMovie from '09 to '11

I updated my imovie '09 to '11 and now my video files from my camcorder JVC (model GZ_MG330HU) will not import.  The video files show up in my iMovie library but when I try to create a project or movie and then share what I have created the files are listed as still on my camera and it says that I need to reimport.  It says to go the File Menu and click "Reimport from camera archive" but there is no such option.
I used to import my files with my old iMovie version and create mini home videos but now even those video files are not listed.  I would like to reload the old version.  How can I do that?  Will iMovie '11 get fixed?

If there are problems with importing the IE Favorites in Firefox then export the favorites in IE to an HTML file and import that file in the Firefox Bookmarks Manager.
If you do not have the menu bar in IE then right-click the toolbar at the top to enable the Menu Bar.
*Export the favorites in IE to an HTML file (bookmarks.html):<br>File > Import and Export
*Import the HTML file in Firefox:<br>Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Import Bookmarks from HTML

  • Video will not import onto sequence, only audio when inserted.

    Hi,
I'm trying to import AVCHD video into a Premiere Pro project sequence. I was able to do this only seconds ago and when I came to just one clip, it wouldn't import. It is the same file (AVCHD) and I was just able to do it. Note that when I press insert, just the audio part will show up, but you can't hear anything. Also, I tried converting the video to MP4, however it still did the same thing. The video does play in the source monitor and when I scrub through it in the project bin. However, I now cannot import any of my other AVCHD files that worked only seconds ago. I am working with Premiere Pro CC.

    Hi Sarah,
Do you have the folder structure intact?
If yes, then please use the media browser window to import the AVCHD footages.
Also try opening the same files in Premiere Pro CS6.
    Try trashing the preferences.
    For the Mac, press Shift+Option
    For the PC, press Shift+Alt
Please try the steps & see if that helps.
    Thanks

  • Video portion of podcasts not playing only audio

I recently purchased an Apple tv and have not had issues until recently. Whenever I either stream or download a video podcast through the device only the audio portion plays. I have tried through itunes on both my pc ans iphone and they work just fine there. I have searched the forums and am not seeing any resulutions for this particular issue. Any help would be appreciated.

apple don't produce the podcasts though.
it is up the person making the podcast what format it is produced in.
appletv has a small set of supported formats, so it is not uncommon for podcasts to be not compatible. this has nothing to do with apple. just because they play in itunes or iphone does not mean they will work on appletv.
anyone can submit a podcast to the itunes store.

  • IMovie imports only audio - video is gray/green

When I import videos from either my iPhone or iPhoto library, the video shows up gray or green.
    I have a MacBook Pro 13 inch with 8 gb ram.(Early 2011 model)
How can I resolve this issue?

I can't find any reference anywhere to a Samsung SC-D363 ..perhaps there's an error in the model name or number.
Any device which creates videos on SD storage should automatically copy them into iPhoto when you start that up with the device connected via USB.
Or, if that doesn't work, connect the Samsung and look in your Mac's 'Applications' folder for the 'Image Capture' program: that should recognise the camera and import from the SD card.
With either of those methods - but especially with iPhoto - any movies which are playable in iMovie can then be imported from iPhoto.
iMovie can play MPEG-4 videos (..mini videos which have been saved in MPEG-4 format ..see your Samsung's instruction book to find out what format the camera uses for movies..) and it can play some .avi and other movie formats. In some cases, though, you might find that the video plays OK, but there's no sound. In those cases you could try playing the movie(s) using the QuickTime program.
If your Samsung is a normal DV camcorder which also saves mini-movies to the SD card, then you'll be able to use a USB cable to copy the mini-movies, as described above, but you'll need a FireWire/DV/i.Link (different names for the same thing) 4-pin-to-six-pin cable to copy normal DV video from the camcorder to your Mac.

  • Quicktime Video Conversion Not Preserving Multiple Audio Tracks

    Hi All,
I'm trying to convert a H.264 video file to a ProRes MOV using quicktime pro 7.
This is a video file that was created using Handbrake.
In Handbrake I am able to rip several audio tracks from a VOB. In this case I need to rip both the 5.1 audio and 2.0 audio. Instead of splitting this up into separate exports, I can attach both audio tracks to the H.264 mov. I can view and edit them in the Properties window of the video in quicktime.
So what I'm starting with is a video file with two Audio tracks:
    5.1 Surround: C,L,R,Ls,Rs,LFE + 2.0 Stereo: L, R
What I'd like to do is unite the two audio files to create an 8.0 track: L,R,C,LFE,Ls,Rs,Lt,Rt
By changing the naming of the stereo track from L,R to Lt,Rt in the properties windown, an option appears in the audio export settings to use the SMPTE DTV audio output (L,R,C,LFE,Ls,Rs,Lt,Rt). But when I use it, assuming it will recognize my naming structure and rearrange the tracks according, the export results in a stereo file.
What am I doing wrong?? All logic makes me assume that this should work...
I should note that when I open the H.264 in quicktime the 5.1 audio track is not enables (or clicked on) in the properties tab. I must turn it on for quicktime to recognize it in the inspector window. However, when I try to save the video it requires me to save my file in an MOV container.
When I try to simply export the file as a 8 discrete channels, it will export with 8 channels, but the first two are a stereo pair and the other 6 are silent tracks.
The only way I've found to keep these audio tracks together is to extract each audio unit separately (5.1 and 2.0) and then add one of the audio tracks to the other using the copy and "Add to Movie" feature. This is not my preferred workflow since I'd like to keep the audio and video together. I'm creating a workflow that will be repeated several times so the more I can streamline this process the better.
Please help. Any ideas would be great.

I don't think Quicktime Pro is able to export individual audio tracks.  It sounds like Handbrake create an AC3 sound track and a 2.0 channel stereo track.  I don't think iMovie will handle multi-track audio and Final Cut Pro X won't let you assign audio channels to individual outputs.
If you have the original VOB file, DVDxDV Pro will break it out to individual audio channels into separate AIFF audio files which you can then import into Final Cut Pro 7 and remix the audio that way.

  • Premiere CS5 Imports Only Audio from AVI from HD Camcorder

I recently purchased this camcorder and recorded some video in 1080p HD. The camera saves its video in .AVI format. When I go to import the files into an HDV 1080p30 preset project sequence, Premiere only recognizes the audio. A friend of mine suspects that it's because Premiere doesn't recognize "the AVDHD stream within the AVI wrapper." Does anyone have a solution. I uploaded a sample video clip here. Any insights would be much appreciated. I'd hate to have to send the camera back because it seems really nice aside from this issue.
    Thanks,
