Video is "white" in VIewer, but okay in Quicktime, etc. - SET TO RGB

When I try to view MPEG4s and FLVs now in my FCP Viewer, the audio is there but the video is white, or blank. I can view them just fine outside of FCP, in QT, etc. I am stumped. I used to have no problems, happened a month ago or so.

I have:
1) Deleted com.apple.finalcutpro preference file, and FCP User Data Folder, rebooted.
2) Checked and made sure that RGB was checked and not "Alpha".

I have been viewing MPEG4, MP4, and even FLV files in FCP, because I have installed various applications and codecs, such as MPEG4Streamclip, Flip4Mac and others. Currently I can view FLV files just fine in FCP. But with many MPEG4 and MP4 files, they can be viewed in the new Quicktime X fine, but with QT 7 (full) and FCP, it is a blank, white screen.
I am going to try and reinstall FCP 7, and see if that fixes it.

Sony SR-11 video "backjerks" in Project viewer but not Log Transfer viewer

For example, in both the project canvas and viewer, people's heads may be turning to the right in the frames leading up to "backjerk" frame and again after the "backjerk" frame, but their heads jerk to the left at the "backjerk" frame. For example,for clip 805:

The "backjerk" frames move 1 frame with each succeeding frame count of 24. Hence in the next batch of 24 frames, the "backjerk" frames are 08:08 and 08:21, and so on.
When viewed in the Log and Transfer Viewer or camcorder, there is no "backjerk". Quicktime was unable to open the files copied directly from the camcorder stream. Quicktime could open the files after transfer and saving but had the same "backjerk" problem.
The video was recorded on a Sony SR-11 at 25 fps, AVCHD 1920x1080 and transferred to FCE using Log and Transfer. Capture did not work due to lack of firewire connection. The clips appeared in the Log and Transfer Window, were dragged to the lower area where "drag media here" appeared, and were saved in a project.
When the clips were dragged to the canvas in the project, I tried both yes and no to the question as to whether I wanted to change the format to be compatible with the External Video. Neither worked.
The Easy set up is "HD", "25 fps" and "AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec/50".
FCE is version 4.0.1. Computer is MacPro, OS X Version 10.5.7; Processor: 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon. Memory: 6GB 1066 MHz DDR3, 170 GB of memory available on HD

Can watch youtube videos w/o a problem, but all I get is a white screen everywhere else

Videos from youtube are the only videos that I can view from my computer. When I try to view videos from anywhere else (Facebook or anyother website) all I can see is a white screen. I can usually still hear the audio and sometimes the picture will flash in and out when I move the mouse back and forth across the video. Anyone have any ideas what my problem might be? I have Internet Explorer 9, windows 7 64 bit system. Any help would be appreciated.

I have the same thing going on with my computer. When I click the vide to play it the screen whites out and I can see shadows of whats on the screen and can hear audio but the screen whites out. I can watch the video on Youtube's site just no where else.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe flash player, I've run CCleaner, antivirus, checked drivers, gone back to a restore point...
So far nothing's worked.

Exporting video for iPod - audio OK but video is "white"

I know this issue has been raised before but I cannot find a clear resolution anywhere - happy to be pointed to the right place.
Some time ago I converted some old VHS home movies to DVD and they play fine. To view them via AppleTV I've converted them to MP4 using H.264/AAC via MEGUI, and they work fine in iTunes on the PC and on AppleTV.
Once they were in iTunes I tried converting them for iPod but the output is a blank white video screen though the audio is fine.
To diagnose the problem I tried loading the MP4 version directly into Quicktime (Version 7.6.8)where the play fine. Then I tried exporting them for iPod and I get the same white screen plus audio.
I've seen this issue dismissed as due to some form of DRM but I doubt that is the case here. The video is my own, the DVDs I created are not CSS protected and the MP4s are also unprotected.
I've also seen it attributed to a missing codec, but that is unlikely given both iTunes and Quicktime play the videos without a hitch.
Any clues on how to proceed?

Last post before I leave things alone for a while.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes and Quicktime and iTunes no longer chews up lots of CPU when trying to convert one particular Quicktime created file.
I've also recreated each file again from the same source, the AVI encoded as DV-PAL with screen res of 720x576. I created a series of test cases to try to pin the problem down and I think the best exposition is the following -
The problem
An MPEG4 file exported from Quicktime loads and plays in iTunes, plays on AppleTV and can be converted for iPod.
An almost identical MPEG4 file created by MEGUI using the x264 encoder, latest build 1649, and all the same settings as Quicktime loads and plays in iTunes, plays on AppleTV but when converted for iPod produces a file with audio but the video is "white". Looking at the file size, less than 2mb, it is pretty obvious that the video stream is simply not there.
Clues
Quicktime Movie Inspector reports the screen resolution of the file it exported as 720x540 while for the MEGUI created file it reports a very odd 787x576. Note that Windows Media Player and YAMB (MP4Box utility) both report this same file as 720x576 which is what I would expect as MEGUI did not resize the video. As an aside, WMP and YAMB also report the Quicktime created file as 720x540 so they agree with Quicktime on that score at least.
Obvious Question
Why does Quicktime report an incorrect screen resolution, and is this contributing to the conversion problem in iTunes?
My understanding is that MPEG4 uses 16x16 macroblocks and so the dimensions of anything to be encoded must be in multiples of 16 and 787 is not a multiple of 16.
Of course, the 787x576 screen resolution could be a red herring.

However, the DVD+R works on both my Dad's and my brother's laptops. My Dad's laptop is an iBook G4 with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.3.9. The DVD Player is version 4.0. My brother's laptop is a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.7.2. The DVD Player is App version 5500.26.1 and framework version 5.5.0. The DVD+R plays fine on their laptops, but will not play on mine.

yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
find / -iname filename -print
This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
find /Users/username -iname filename -print
Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
ls /Volumes

Drag the clip from your Event to your Project. Then use the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns Tool on the Middle Toolbar to rotate it

Without a link, it's anybody's guess.
It could be a problem the video rendering itself. Which software did you use?
Did you export to the 3 file types -- MP4, OGG and WEBM to support all browsers?
Does your web server support those 3 MIME file types?

Thanks for your reply. This video was recorded by my own professional camera, Sony PMW EX 3, two years back. But I am neither a professional cameraman nor an editor. I am just like a beginner in both. I didnt have space in my storage device, so I just copied all my clips, thinking I can edit it latter, without recompressing or editing or whatever I should have done it at that point of time. Now I need to edit it and use it in my profession. I am very upset. Please help me in going step by step to get it in FCP X for editing. Also I would like to know, do I need to buy the Compressor 4 for any reason. I dont mind in buying, if you think it is going to be useful for some reason. ItunesU videos not playing in Itunes but play ok if you download to laptop's drive and run them from windows directory

I'm having a problem playing some ItunesU videos, some play okay, some just show black screen and don't play, others show a still image but then doesn't play when trying to view them from itunes store. The audio files play with no issues.
I am using windows 7.
However, if I download the videos that don't play to the laptop's drive and run them from the windows directory they play okay. I don't want to have to download videos to see if they are something I'd like to watch.
Just for reference, an example of a video that plays okay is by UC Berkeley Math 16A 001, Fall 2011. Another is Introduction to Robotics by MIT.
An example that just shows blank screen is Stanford's Iphone & Ipad development, Fall 2011, both HD and SD versions.
While an example of a video that just shows the initial image but doesn't play is Harvard's Statistics 110. If you adjust the time of the video, the video moves to that part of the video but only shows the image at that time, ex. at 13:02, but doesn't play.
I've tried reinstalling quicktime first, then itunes. I've also tried putting directdraw in safe mode, but the problem videos still won't play.
Could it be some setting, since it plays when the file is downloaded but won't play straight from itunes store online (ie. pressing the play button beside the video in the itunes list).
Help pls.

You might have more luck asking on a general Windows troubleshooting site, but my guess would be an invalid or old audio or CD driver (or firmware in the drive). You might try checking those to make sure you have the correct and most current drivers.

Video speeds up when imported, but audio is normal in PE7

I ripped a DVD on to my computer. It's in a VOB format by default from DVD Shrink. I don't know if I can change the format and I don't know if it would help. It's not being compressed in DVD Shrink, so I don't think that is the problem. I open the VOB file in PE7 and it's like the video is on fast forward, but the audio is at a normal pace. If I try to open the file in PE3, the video is jittery and jumps around, but the video isn't faster than the audio.
The frame rate in PE7 is 29.something, whatever it's at normally. I thought it was DVD Shrink causing the problems, but I tried DVD Decrypter as well and got the same results. Any ideas on how to make the video slow down?
Sorry in advance if someone has asked this already and I just failed to find it. I just upgraded to PE7 and it's been giving me problems all weekend. I'm a complete idiot when it comes to technical video stuff, so I might not have any idea what you're talking about if you attempt to tell me how to fix it.

A couple of things here to hopefully clear the air.
If the DVD content is store bought, then more likely than not, it is copy-protected. The typical encryption used is CSS (but there are many flavors around).
Using DVD-Shrink, or DVD-Decrypter, will remove encryption and rip the VOB's to your hard drive. The only difference for your purposes between the 2 programs is that Shrink will rip and compress content to fit on a 4.7gig DVD disc, while Decrypter will rip with no compression.
Once a ripped VOB is on your drive, see how it plays with Windows Media Player, or whatever Player you use on your PC to view DVD content.
If it's broke at this point, importing to a Video Editor buys you nothing.
If it works okay, use Prism (Or Power Director) to convert the VOB's to DV-AVI, then import the converted file to PE7.

Help..Flash Videos work for Chrome/IE but NOT Firefox

So I cannot see some flash videos on Firefox (like sites CNet & Disney do not work) which use flash. It does work on Chrome & IE.
1. ALL Programs are the newest/latest versions.
2. I removed and downloaded all programs- restarted the computer after each download.
3. I have the latest Flash (according to the website) when I view the Adobe Flash Website on Firefox.
I don't know why some flash videos work...and some do not.
I am running Vista. All my programs are legit...and I do have McAfee running..I don't download porn, no viruses etc.. Anyone have advice?!!

No more audio or video preview in column view?

weird one... on my powerbook (g4) i suddenly have no ability to play/preview audio or video file in column view in the finder. works fine on my desktop machine with the same os and such...? highlighting a file just gives its name and dates and such, no ability to preview.
using 10.4.8 and QT 7.1.3. tried updating prebinding (and other normal quickfixes). think i might need to reinstall quicktime?

well, yes i tried all the basic quick fixes. (plus diskwarrior and applejack, etc.)
i thought i might find it in some of the preferences of finder or quicktime but no go.
the weirder thing is that if you highlight an audio or video file in the column view, while it gives no audio or video preview, if you click on the "get more info" button (or command-i) there will be the audio or video preview.

FX-5200 No Video on TV Out (all else okay)

Hi All,
Recently replaced my old AGP card with an FX-5200-TD128 so I could have TV out. Everything is okay except there is no video on the TV. It shows everything else though that is on the monitor.
The tv is connected via the composite cable adaptor that came with the 5200. The monitor is connected to the VGA port on the 5200. The computer is a P4 with XP Home. I have the displays set as 'Clone'.
I found that if I set the TV to be the 'Primary Display' instead of the Monitor that I would get video on the TV. But then the monitor wont show video and also it only shows part of the full screen.
Also found that I could get full screen video on the TV by changing 'Full Screen Device' from 'Disable' to 'Secondary Display'. But then the TV wont show any text overlays or the controls for the media player - only the video.
In researching past posts I found some with similar sounding problems. One solution was
"Overlay->full screen device->secondary display". This is rather cryptic to me, and I couldn't find any settings that matched.
I also found suggestions that with TV out being used the analog monitor cant be connected to the VGA port. (Seems Weird!) Do I need some kind of adaptor to connect my monitor to the DVI output?

DVI Convertor is a converter which converts DVI output to VGA output. You have mentioned it as a VGA to DVI adaptor. Does ur monitor have a DVI Input?? If not how are you connecting it to the monitor.

IF ur TV has an S-video port then there shouldn't be any problem with ur selection.
Suggest to undo the changes, connect ur monitor back to VGA port and check whether you are able to use the TV out individually. If yes then use a DVI to VGA connector and connect the analog video cable from the Monitor to the output from DVi-VGA Converter. Use the same composite cable or S-Video out and check out whether you are able to clone the images.
