Video length Quality
I'm apologize if this has been discussed ahead of time.
I have read that at Best Quality settings, "iDVD evaluates the amount of video and chooses the best quality setting possible"
So my question is at what amount of video do I get best quality settings possible?
I have read that 60 minutes for older versions of idvd, is this still true for idvd 6? Can anyone tell me at what video length I would get best quality?
I have just burned a dvd with 112 minutes length, and I'm not very pleased with the quality, I see pixels at times.
Dear Mr. Shippey...
thanks. just the info I was seeking. i guess i'd steamed my glasses and couldn't find the answer in the 500 pages of David Pogue's "the missing iMovie manual" . and there it is on pg. 380. What a relief that I found it here. I was despairing that I'd taken a couple of months, few hours a day, putting together a present for my twin 7-yr-olds, that came in at 1:10:52:26 and when I opened the "Project Info" pane, to top bar was full, 4.2 of 4.2 GB filled, but only 77 minutes! I nearly croaked.
I'd have to say that the "Best Performance" and "Best Quality" radio buttons are misleading to the total newbie. I was thinking the context was how the movie will look/work when the target audiences see it, now how long it'll take to digitize it.
(I also didn't find, in Pogue's $35 magnum, comprehensive iMovie opus any table trying to at least roughly relate throughput rates by CPU clock speed/Gigabytes of data, video/audio, to munge, etc. I'd love to know how well a dual-CPU would do. --- Gadzooks--just configured a new dualie with max ram, max disk drives, dual optical drives, (no x-server), dual 30-inch screens--(well, one can dream and hope to hit the lottery--that's hard when you don't buy the tickets, tho <smile>) and we're quickly up from 2499.99 (I hate those 99.99.99.99.99 things) to a mere $16,716.00. Good God--that's getting back to the workstation prices of the Xerox Star in Jimmy Carter's White House (remember those days?)) But, good lord, what a difference in capacity, performance, ease of use. We've come a long way, baby.
Speaking of the non-intuitive "performance" radio buttons in iDVD, it reminds me of the trash can--I was trying to tell my late dad that he had to drag the diskette icon to the trash to eject it, and he immediately asked, "But doesn't that wipe out what's on the disk? You just told me that to delete anything I just had to toss it into the trashcan!"
(This was in the 1st five minutes of my "orientation" class for him. I explained the inconsistency. "I thought this was supposed to be 'intuitive' to use," he grumped. I felt better when I read Tog On User Interfaces to find that at least there'd been a battle about the illogic. Steve won; Tognazzini lost. (users lost a little bit, too, IMHO.))

IMovie Theater video length limit
Why does iMovie Theater limits you to a 15 minute max video length? Most of my home movies are around 20 to thirty minutes. Seems silly to limit the video to such a short length if you are paying for the iCloud storage for your video.
Any thoughts on this one? I'm completely perplexed.

TV Anywhere poor video capture quality
I have a Celeron 1.7, 20 and 60 gig hd at 7200 rpm, 512M of ram. My capture is of very poor quality. I have used the MSI software and also Virtual Dub. Still poor video capture quality. Anyone tell me what I can do or how to do this right?
geo-elaIf you use a compressing codec in real time, you need lotsa CPU.
Try using a lossless codec such as Huffyuv (you'll need lotsa disk) for the real time capture and then compress afterwards. -
Possible to adjust video camera quality settings?
I realize this is a shot in the dark, but is there any way to adjust the video camera quality settings on a 5th-gen nano? I'm wondering if the poor quality of the video is a result of the hardware or the built-in compression settings.
Hello Matt,
is there any way to adjust the video camera quality settings on a 5th-gen nano?
No. What you see is what you get.
Here are the specs for captured video on your nano.
H.264 VGA video, 640 by 480 pixels, up to 30 frames per second with AAC audio
Not exactly top notch, but still decently quality for a decent price. It's more than likely due to both reasons. This may improve with future generations.

I have been trying to find out what the maximum video length shot by the camera will be on the iPhone 4 without any success. I have also had no success in finding out the maximum video length for video on the 3GS too.
I was wondering if anyone knows what the max video length shot with the camera on the iPhone is please.
Thanks in advanceThere are a number of factors that affect the file size in a digital video. The amount of color changes being one, and the file compression algorithm is the biggest. Right now, there is no way to know the file size for the iPhone 4, since we can only guess at what the files sizes will be based on the 720p HD recording. I don't have a 3GS, so I cannot speak on that matter.
The last aspect that would affect how much video you can record is the amount of free space that you have left available on the iPhone. Maybe someone with a 3GS can come in here and let you know what kind of file sizes they have experienced, however that may not be a predictor for the iPhone 4. -
Hello,
I am currently stuck with the following problem...
I have a table with 3 fields; id, description, and filename,
in a table named videos. All videos are in flv format. I do not
have info of the video length in database, and I have too many
videos to enter the data manually into a new field. I want to
retrieve the length of the flv videos when i output the videos as a
list like such:
ID Description Filename length of video
1 machinery video machine.flv 9:20min
2 quary video quarry.flv 3:20min
So i am assuming MYSQL wont do it... can coldfusion parse the
video file to determine its length so i can output that?
If not... how can I get around this problem? There's a PERL solution at
http://search.cpan.org/~clotho/FLV-Info-0.17/lib/FLV/Info.pm.
You would have to install PERL You could probably access this via
CFEXECUTE, or even add additional PERL code and produce something
like a tab delimited datafile which would be consumed by
ColdFusion.
Also take a look at FLVMDI (FLV Meta Data Injector)
http://www.buraks.com/flvmdi/
along with CFEXECUTE. This would create copies of the files,
inject the metadata into the copy and then with the xml switch,
create an xml file as well which could then be used to read the
information you're looking for.
There is also a commercial product ($175) that will batch
extract metadata
Metadata Miner Catalogue PRO software

Two questions: 1) How do Skype and iChat compare for group video? Quality, reliability, cost, etc are important. 2) Is my MobileMe ID what I need to input in the window in making an iChat buddy? It only says AIM above the window, online tutorial differs, saying MobileMe, AIM, GoogleTalk (Jabber) all work. Thnx
Hi,
IChat uses better Video Compression than Skype does.
On a top flight Mac you can send a 640 X 480 pixel frame up to 30 frames a sec.
Skype can't match this.
iChat in Video is Peer to Peer. (you can actually Log out of the Buddy list)
Skype seems to borrow something from everyone's bandwidth to make connections.
What do you mean by Business account Tracking ?
iChat Adds (or can add) the First Name, Last Name of your Buddies and create an Address Book Entry
Whether you mark those cards connected with a company is up to you.
(I have heard of issues with earlier version of iChat and the Address Book that "saw" the Company Name as the part of the Name and linking several Screen Names to the one name
Audio on a Mac using Skype tend to be the same as the streaming needs are less.
However you have to rely on any PCs audio abilities from PCs which may not be to the same standard.
Mac to PCs in iChat and AIM can be difficult though. (It should work but it rarely as simple as Plug and go)
Skype may suit your needs better on ocassions.

How to hide video length informaiton
Dear all,
I created a landing webpage with embedded video hosted on Vimeo. When I use Safari on iPhone 5 to visit the webpage and click the video link it always shows the video length information, which I want to hide. I am wondering if I can do any customization on the video iframe code in order to hide that information ? Please kindly advise, thank you very much all folks.
Yours sincerely,
KennyThere isn't an option per se.
However there is an app in AppWorld that will let you do it.
Personally, I just use the Air Browser in AppWorld to rename the file extension from .mp4 to .mp4.me.
This hides the video from the player until I name it back again.

IChat Video Conference Quality?
Hello,
I am thinking about purchasing a Macbook and using it for one-on-one video conferencing, but would like to know if the webcam video quality is really as good as it is in the store demo. That is, when you video conference with others (Mac and PC), is the video you receive sharp, or is it blocky (more like big pixels) and response slow even with a cable modem? I am asking because we also have a new Sony Vaio and the webcam quality is pretty poor with video conferencing using AIM, Sightspeed, and Windows Live Messenger. While at the Apple store the salesperson was not able to connect to anyone outside of the store, so I was not able to gauge the quality. Also, are you able to make the video window larger? (it seems so small)
Thanks for any feedback…
Windows XP ProThe primary determinant of iChat video conferencing quality is the upstream Internet connection speed on both ends of the call.
But for a given connection speed such as yours (whatever it is), I'd say that Mac to Mac iChat video conferencing would be clearly better than PC video conferencing on AIM, SightSpeed, or Windows Live Messenger. It's not going to be as good as what you saw in the Apple Store unless you have an upstream connection speed of 1500 Kbps or greater.
I have both Macs and PCs, but I always choose to use iChat Mac to Mac video conferencing whenever possible. As a Mac alternative to iChat, I prefer Skype for Mac with video and recommend it for Mac users who need to video-connect with PC users.
Both iChat and Skype offer up to full-screen video. -
Premiere Pro CC 2014 imported video length mismatch
I've got a problem in Premiere Pro CC 2014 where the audio and video get out of sync the farther you go into the imported clip. While troubleshooting I noticed that Premiere isn't properly reading the video length of the imported file. Windows reports the right length, as do VLC and Handbrake, but Premiere shows a time about 30 seconds shorter than the real file. I've included the file info from MediaInfo and Premiere here. Windows reports a (correct) length of 1:56:39. This happens on two different Windows computers both running the latest release of Premiere Pro. Has anyone seen this? I've tried to search for similar issues but haven't found anything like this. Thanks!

For some reason, I don't see video length displayed anywhere! I really looked around, but I can't locate where the time is shown.

I could be wrong but I think that is a computed number based on file size, frame size and frame rate. -
Steps or path to revert to original file after Media Encoder has shortened video length by 15min
I was trying to encode the video to decrease the upload time and instead reduced video length by 15 minutes. I dont know how or what happened. after selecting encode. It seemed to do what it was supposed to and then upon viewing the movie i realized much of the import video is not there... I would appreciate any steps or measures i can try to rever to the original file. i have the original on an sd card but, even when i right click and play its the 5 min video instead of 20
What apps are you using to open the original file that you copies to your local drive (list all that you have tried? QT, VLC, WMP, PPro)?
You say original was 20 min and is now 5 min. I don't see how AME or other Adobe apps would have done this to original file.
I'm wondering if there was an issue with file before it came into AME and AME encoded what all the other media player are seeing which is only 5 minutes.
In Windows, if you right click on the file and get properties, how long does windows think it is?
