Video looks fine in preview... goes mosaic, loses audio on DVD????

I have 3 and 1/2 hours of video edited in FCP and burned on a dual-layer DVD with iDVD. The video looked good in FCP and looked fine in preview in iDVD. The DVD burned without any pop-up warnings of problems, BUT when I put it in to check it, it goes bad about 40 minutes from the end. The picture goes mosaic (it looks like a satellite picture losing signal - sorry I don't know the exact technical term) and the audio completely disappears. On the menu page if I forward to the last chapter the counter (minutes) keeps counting away but we never leave the menu page and I can't move to other chapters.
There aren't any edits or transitions where the video goes bad. I've tried re-saving to QT and reburning with the same problem in the same place. Anybody have any ideas on what's causing this and how I resolve it?

Hi
Just thinking. Can iDVD 5 handle DL-DVDs OK ?
I would.
• Use iDVD'09
• Pro-encoding Quality
• from FCP - Export out as QT.mov file, NOT Selfcontained, NO QT-conversion.
• Low free space on internal boot hard disk gives all kind of strange resulst
My mimimum 25GB for 4x3 SD video and x5 for 16x9 HD
I use
• Verbatim DVD-R
• DVD-R
• burn speed set down to x1

Why are some jpg images scrambled when they appear in my screen saver?   The same images look fine in Preview and Finder.  Some images appear scrambled in the screen saver 'preview' window and the actual screen saver. Other jpg images look fine.

The desktop image is fine, taken from the exact same pool of jpg photos.  However, as soon as the slide show screen saver comes on, the images are scrambled.  What is it about the apple screen saver algorithm that scrambles the pics?

how can i improve burning quality of dvd.looks fine in preview on idvd, but final burn quality is poor.

Had same problem with iPhoto pictures and poor burn quality. Went back to original picture file and dragged images into idvd project from there. Set encoding at professional quality and burned at slowest speed. Got very good result with high quality slideshow when played on TV.
Also tried Old Toad's Aug 30, 2011 advice to get a slideshow into iDVD with transitions, music, etc. from iPhoto.
Again the quaility of the burned CD was very good.

  • Without changing anything: Live view looks fine, but "preview in browser" does not

I haven't made any changes to our website in months. When I opened my index page, I did not change anything yet, but did a "preview in browser" and my whole slideshow is missing! It's still fine on the live website, as I haven't uploaded anything. Help.... why is it doing this? I need to add a small icon to our homepage, but I don't want to upload this page if it's not going to work!

And, being embedded in JavaScript, they will not be found to be 'adjusted' by DW, even when using temporary files to preview.  I'm afraid you will have to just lump the fact that they are not displaying in preview mode.

  • Video looks fine on NTSC / TV, looks bad on computer screen?

Hi, sorry for the basic question, but i seem to have forgotten the best method for converting my video to a format best suited to play on a computer screen.
I understand the difference between ntsc and computer screens, as well as why ntsc or most standard tv's play interlaced video well, but i can't seem to find a good codec for exporting (or converting) my video so that it will look sharp on a computer screen.
The project is for a school, and the primary playback for them will be 1, via a computer out to lcd projector, and 2, simply on a computer. BY the way, the school uses PC's (UGGG!).
I'm currently doing tests with quick time conversion and trying (amongst other things) Dvix, wmv, and h264.
The videos are all 720 / 480, dv/dvcpro ntsc as far as fcp sequence settings, and have all been exported via compressor > dvdsp4 as standard DVD's. All of them look great on the tv (of course) and now it's just a matter of whipping out versions that are formatted to play best on computers.
    Any advice

apparently there is a de-interlace filter in FCP. i don't know much about solving your problem. it has always been a mystery to me. but found this article yesterday which could be your problem. check it out:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25318
for some reason this link is not working. google this:
"Interlacing: How to prevent jagged lines in video"
itll be the apple.com article of the same title.

  • Video plays fine in iMovie but is messed up on DVD?

I made a 15-minute video using iMovie. I then made a DVD using iDVD; however, about 5 minutes in on the DVD, stuff gets weird. There are clips where I muted the video and had a voiceover, but for some reason on the DVD you can still hear the audio from the video clip. Voiceovers are getting jumbled up and playing over each other. I tried burning two separate DVDs, and it happened both times. I also tried just exporting it to my desktop, and it happened again.
Does anyone know what the problem could be, and if so, how to fix it? Thank you.

    Which version of iMovie?
If you are on version 8.0.6, this is probably due to the use of speed changes like fast motion or slow motion.
If you have speed changes in your project, you need to stick to the pre-set tick marks of 25%, 50%, 100%, 200%, 400%, 800%, etc. If you use a custom percent like 58% or 139%, you will get weird audio behavior in your final product.

  • Project appears fine in preview, exporting is a total disaster.

My 5 minute project looks fine in preview, but when I export it, I get stuttering between 2 frames, and this is repeated intermitently throughout (same couple of frames).  If I switch to another project and export, that project uses some of the footage from the 5 minute thing I'm trying to finish.  Older projects (from before today) export okay.  The thing I did today was imported footage from a Sony camcorder that was AVCHD.  That's the only thing I can pin it on.  Moving that footage and the project it was associated with has not helped any.
Between other export issues (it often takes me several attempts, including restarting) and then re-fixing my TITLES, this software (coming from a complete novice) feels like a beta release.

I assume so (my expertise is more in sound than video, though I used to work alongside a video editor, so I'm not completely ignorant!). Though I'm not sure what you'd call the larger scale effect that looks like the image is being projected on slats. Anyway, here's screen grabs of 3 versions, the 2 newer one (after the re-importing) on the left. You'll notice that the lower image is still not exactly great. Again, all of this looks fine in the Viewer, before exporting.
Viewer appearances - that would be the Show Both Fields option? ... Ah yes, that looks bad. So what should I be doing about that? (Or where in the manual does it talk about that?)
Is that something I should have set on the camera? I notice there's no deInterleave option in the FCPX Share items - so how does someone who doesn't have compressor deal with this?
    Thanks for your help,
    David

  • Video looks ok in source window but distorted in Program window.

I am trying to work with video clips shot using a Canon XF 305 at 1280 X 720 at 60P FPS.  Using the Canon XF utility, I have injested the clips from the card to my hard drive where they are stored as MXF files. Using Premiere’s media browser, I imported them into bins from my hard drive.  I set up the sequence to match the clips settings . The video looks fine in the Source window but when I bring over onto the timeline- the same clip looks distorted with artifacts in the program window. I then used Adobe Prelude to convert the MXF files into ProRes 422 LT files with same resolution of 1280 X 720 at 59.94 frames FPS.  I used the media browser to bring those pro-res clips into Premier and set up another new sequence to match the clips setting.  I get the same problem- the video looks good in the source window but terrible in the program window when I bring them into the timeline.  They are completely distorted with artifacts.  This is the first time I have tried working with 1280 x 720 60p fps clips.  I have successfully worked with 1920 X1080P 30P clips from the same camera with no issues.  Any ideas on what I am doing wrong and how to correct my workflow will be appreciated.
I am using a 2009 Intel Mac Pro with Snow leopard 10.6.8

Is your 'Playback and Pause' resolution set to 'Full' for your program monitor?
Also, why not just drag one of the clips to the 'New Item' button at the bottom of the project window to make a sequence with the settings of your clip?

  • When using Final Cut Express, the video in the Viewer window looks fine, but when I insert the video into the Canvas Timeline it appears to lose resolution, and look fuzzy and blurry. Are there preferences or settings for the Timeline that cause this?

When using Final Cut Express, the video in the Viewer window looks fine, but when I insert the video into the Canvas Timeline it appears to lose resolution, and look fuzzy and blurry. Are there preferences or settings for the Timeline that cause this?

Thanks David. I had to convert the mts file to Quick Time (using AunSoft Conversion software) before I could import it into Final Cut Express. And I made sure I kept the size of movie (720 X 480 with letterbox) to compliment what I set my Panaconic AVCCAM video recorder at (720/60). Even after I fully render it, it still looks fuzzy in the Canvas window at the right that plays what I have editing down in the Timeline. A friend that edits some using Final Cut Pro helped me to narrow things down to this problem. This is also wierd. If my Viewer window at the left is set to 200% to get the person's head the same size in the Canvas window at the right we needed to put it to 400%. Does this make any sense. We think we need to control the Time line resolution somehow but cannot find any options from my manual, or the help, or in the various drop down menus. Do you have any clue? What is going on?

  • Print preview looks fine but window space on worksheets prints all black

Recently purchased new HP Deskjet 1512 .    I digitize embroidery and Chenille designs.   Since purchasing the new printer,
intermittently  the worksheets , which look fine on the print preview,  will print completely black in the window workspace
area.   The rest of the page prints ok.     I have already had the problem trouble-shooted with my software company.  I've been told that the printer driver is most likely the problem.    Windows 7 Professional is my operating system.   Has anyone encountered this problem???

    Hey,
    1. Uninstall the printer software (*click on the Windows 7 instructions) >> http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02259020&tmp_task=useCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=e...
    2. A clean boot of the computer to get the clutter out of the way. Here is how to do that >> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
    3. Restart the Computer.
    4. Disable all of your firewalls and anti-virus scanners.
    5. Reinstall the software off of hp.com.
Best of luck let me know how it goes.
    I worked for HP.

when i print a pdf from preview it prints strange characters - it looks fine on screen

You can also try opening the PDF with preview, then doing a copy and paste to TextEdit and printing from there.
Adobe makes it easier, but you do have software to accomplish this.
Only download Adobe reader from this site, to avoid "fakes/spoofs/malware" that will cause damage to your machine.

  • When I print a Word document to a shared printer, print preview looks fine but the printed page has too much blank space at the top and doesn't print the bottom few lines.

When I print a Word for Mac document to a shared printer (that is connected to my iMac) from my Macbook Pro, print preview looks fine but the printed page has too much blank space at the top and doesn't print the bottom few lines.  I have tried to adjust the margins and the page setup settings but to no avail.  It used to print fine until recently.  Is there a way to fix it so that the printer prints what print preview shows?

I should add that when I e-mail this document to myself and print it directky from the iMac, it prints fine.

    Hi Jaap,
Are you sure about your FTP credentials (FTP folder and site URL) that you are using for the upload? Are you able to see the updated files in the remote directory of the FTP server, after you finish uploading the muse file, using an external FTP client like FileZilla?
    Thanks

I have the same problem with lectures slides.
Furthermore, sometimes the text box, when doube-clicking, turns  the text into a one-liner. Causing the text box to sometimes get 3. times wider than the pdf itself.

By pressing [cmd + I] the Inspector opens up and clicking on the rightmost tab 'Annotations' you should be able find those Annotations again. I do this regularly to find the empty annotations I accidentally create while clicking through slides.

The default settings mostly likely use an audio sample rate of 32k. This doesn't work probably in FCP. You're probably better off capturing the tape in iMovie.
