Video mask

A "pocket question" (that i know that is impossible ... i think!?)
Is there a simple way of masking an object that is moving (?) there´s no chroma but i would like to "mask it", the only way is frame by frame, correct (?) or is there a "moving mask" or "attach mask" to the object (?)
I know that it´s a "strange" question, but i have an image that i have to detach from background ... HELP!!!!!
Thank you!

hi,
If i understand you correctly welcome to the mind numbingly slow world of rotoscoping. You basically have to draw around your object with a mask, and then go through this frame by frame animating the mask. Now actually there are several tricks to help you. Firstly if it is a really complicated shape like a person walking or running, it is best to do bits at a time. so for a person you might do the legs, arms and torso and head all separately. Also you can key frame at the start and then the last frame and motion does a great job of interpolating the positions inbetween. You can then go in and tweak every four frames or so to get a better fit. And then do a third pass and fix errant frames. its amazing how quickly you can do it, once you get into the rhythm.
Here is an example of some rotoscoping of people I did some months back
http://www.noughte.co.uk/television_recentwork.htm
then click on the first line of pictures to view the Zutons commercial. All the little people runing and flipping across screen were rotoscoped. Tokk a couple of days to get them finished in all.
Hope this helps

  • Intermittent video mask

    I have inserted a video mask into QT Pro 7.2. The background movie is on loop. when in full screen, the mask works first time (all black) and then goes grey and then goes back to black. This alternates irregularly as the movie re-loops. Any ideas?

    First of all, thanks for your attention, nbar
    I have two ongoing problems:
    1st - intermittent video loss - I have to press any button on the remote every minute or so (sound will go through, steadily), just to get the "image" back...
    2nd - This content requires HDCP for playback

  • Video masking in Flash

    Hi gang,
    This is my first post here, and your help is most
    appreciated.
    I attended an Adobe webinar last week entitled "Thinking
    Outside the Box", which focused on video functionality within
    Flash. Towards the end of the broadcast, the instructor used a very
    cool technique to mask out a portion of the screen (in this case a
    hole in the wall), and insert the video behind it. You can see the
    exact method at
    http://www.paultrani.com/video/.
    I jotted down what I thought to be simple instructions as I
    watched the video, but when I tried to do it later that evening it
    would not work correctly. Does anyone know or can anyone point me
    to a resource to accomplish this? I know I am missing something
    very simple, which is quite embarrassing, but I have reached my
    frustration point and need guidance.
    Thank you in advance for any help you can provide, and I look
    forward to looking through some other posts for inspiration and
    tips.
    Regards,
    Bryan

    You just need to apply a mask in the layer above the video.
    Here's an example that allows you to turn the mask off and on:

  • Video masking problem in Quicktime Pro 7.5.5

    I've been using Quicktime for Windows for some time. I have had Quicktime Pro 7, and upgraded as needed (when Itunes says so). I've discovered that I can no longer mask videos with Quicktime 7.5.5 When I mask the video track as usual by adding an image, the video frame starts to resize, but then freezes, and quicktime quits running. I can still mask videos if I uninstall 7.5.5 run an earlier version of Quicktime 7...but then Itunes doesn't work. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Multiple video playback issues

    Hi All,
    I would dearly appreciaty any light anyone could shed on this issue - I have run into a couple of Flash bugs that have stumped me for quite a while, and my deadline is aproaching fast.
    Essentially, I would like to play back 3 reasonably high res videos (On2 VP6-S) simultaneously in one Flash App (using flash.video, netstream and netconnect - code only). Unfortunately, when I do this, the video playback drops a lot of frames, however, CPU usage does not go much above 50% - spread over both cores. I'm using a Core2Duo. If I play the same 3 videos simultaneously in 3 separate flash apps (FP10), they play much better (and use close to 100% CPU). I even tried creating it as an AIR app with 3 separate windows (NativeWindow), but that made little difference. I have lodged this as a bug via the Flash Bug Reporting System (http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-2341).
    And yes, I do need to be doing something as crazy as this - it is for a pretty cool kiosk app, so I know what hardware will be used (and it has a good Graphics Card).
    One promising workaround appeared to be playing back a single NetStream in multiple Video instances, as it is NetStream that does the decoding, so I could decode once and present it in 3 places. Two of my video objects are actually the same flv (on different monitors), so there would be a 33% saving right there. If necessary, I could encode both flvs into a single 1920x1200 flv (I've checked - it would play back ok) and then use video.mask to show the relevant bits.
    However, another bug has been reported at http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-920 saying this does not work - Video in the object that last called attachNetStream(ns) will play, all others will freeze. They do mention a workaround that gets both videos to play - reset the size of freezed videos on ENTER_FRAME event. However, I cannot get this workaround to work - my first video is empty (not even frozen).
    So there are a couple of things I would love any feedback on. Firstly, if anyone has insights on how I could get this to work. Secondly, if anyone could try the "multiple videos on one netStream with workaround" code below (simply copy, paste and point to a relevant flv) and let me know if it works and the versions of software they used, I'd be very thankful.
    ---------------Code Begins-------------
    import flash.events.Event;
    import flash.media.Video;
    import flash.net.NetConnection;
    import flash.net.NetStream;
    showRedrawRegions(true); // both the placeholders and the entire window redraws every frame.
    // When only video1 is attached, only video1's region is redrawing
    // When both videos are attached, both video's regions are redrawing, BUT video1 is empty.
    trace ("Capabilities.version = " + Capabilities.version); // = WIN 10,0,22,91 // in Flash CS4 10.0.2
    //var nc:NetConnection = new NetConnection( null ); // Got Eror: 1137: Incorrect number of arguments. Expected no more than 0.
    var nc:NetConnection = new NetConnection();
    nc.connect(null);
    // Connect nc here ...? Unnecessary in this case?
    var ns:NetStream = new NetStream(nc);
    ns.client = new Object(); // Simplest way to deal with cuePoints and metaData by doing nothing. For more, see http://blogs.adobe.com/pdehaan/2006/07/playing_back_flvs_with_actions_1.html
    var stream:String = "test.flv";
    var video1:Video = new Video(); // Defaults to size of 320x240
    var video2:Video = new Video(); // Defaults to size of 320x240
    video2.x = 320;
    addChild(video1);
    addChild(video2);
    ns.play(stream);
    video1.attachNetStream(ns);
    video2.attachNetStream(ns);
    // PROBLEM: Video in the object that last called attachNetStream(ns) will play, all others will freeze.
    // See WORKAROUND below for solution:
    //WORKAROUND to stop the first split stream from freezing:
    addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, onEnterFrame);
    function onEnterFrame(e:Event){
    video1.width = 320;
    video1.height = 240;
    trace ("video1.videoWidth = " + video1.videoWidth);
    trace ("video2.videoWidth = " + video2.videoWidth);
    // When only video1 is attached, video1.videoWidth = 1920, video2.videoWidth = 0
    // When both videos are attached, video1.videoWidth = 0, video2.videoWidth = 1920
    ---------------Code Ends-------------
    Letting me know what exact versions of the following software was used would help a lot:
    - Windows/OS (e.g. XP SP3).
    - App code was written in. (e.g. Flash CS4 IDE 10.0.2, Flash Develop 3.0.1).
    - App code was compiled in. (e.g. Flash CS4 IDE 10.0.2, Flex SDK 3.4.0.6955).
    - Type and Version of Flash Player used (e.g. Standalone Debug Flash Player v10,0,22,91).
    The versions I used are listed above.
    Lastly, for what it is work, I found three interesting/informative results, but they didn't help me:
    - When only video1 is attached, video1.videoWidth = 1920, video2.videoWidth = 0
      When both videos are attached, video1.videoWidth = 0, video2.videoWidth = 1920
    - When only video1 is attached, only video1's region is redrawing
      When both videos are attached, both video's regions are redrawing, BUT video1 is empty.
    - var nc:NetConnection = new NetConnection( null ); // Got Eror: 1137: Incorrect number of arguments. Expected no more than 0.
      So I had to change it to:
        var nc:NetConnection = new NetConnection();
        nc.connect(null);
      Does this mean my NetConnection class is different and maybe incompatible with this workaround?
    Many, many thanks,

    Assuming you already run OS 10.4.9 or above and have Quicktime 7.2, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer from http://uk.real.com/player/
    Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
    Adobe FlashPlayer from http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
    In Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
    In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).
    The world should now be your oyster!
    You should also have the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.

    Is there a way to take a full color video and make half of the video black and white and the other half full color?  For instance imagine a line down the center of the video, on the left the video is black and white, on the right side it's full color.  Taking that concept if an object or person moves from the left to the right side of the screen, thus crossing that invisible line they automatically switch from black and white to color.
    Almost like a video mask overlay..  How would I accomplish this in FCP?  I have FCPS  not FCPX

    Why would duplicating the video onto a track above mess up the sync?
    What you need to do is edit your piece first, once EVERYTHING is where it should be, THEN do the effects...
    unlink your audio (shift-L), select all of your video clips, shift-option click and drag up. Select one of your clips, apply the desaturate or channel mixer effect and the crop... Now, if you do not have any other filters already applied to your clips, select your clip and press command-c to copy. select the rest of the clips that will be destaurated/cropped and right click, select paste attributes. Select filters and Crop, and viola... Tell me where the loss of sync is?
    Make sure to press shift-L again so that your audio & video is linked.

  • Embedding links in video

    Is there a way to embed a link in a portion of a video frame as opposed to the entire frame?
    Can QuickTime export a video with overlay layers? If so, at what bit depth and how many layers?

    Yes. QuickTime .mov files can have up to 99 tracks and each can have its own layer number. Lower numbers are "closer" to the viewer.
    So you could have a "frame" that contains many different layers and each could point to different links.
    If you're old enough to remember the opening to the Brady Bunch (TV show) they used nine "movies" inside a single frame. Each could be a link to the cast member Web page.
    You can also use "transparency" or "blends" and each track can also have a video "mask".

  • What happened to Kost CS6 masking tutorial(s)?

    I tried searching for the masking tutorials I had previously viewed, but very little comes up for advanced masking techniques through the Adobe site. There are some tut's for video masking, but I recall in particular a detailed vid from Julianne Kost that covered advanced use of refine mask edge techniques for still images. The Kost Video was more useful than the annoying Russel Brown version.
    If you are monitoring this Adobe, please make all CS6 tutorials available.

    Hi,
    Is this the video you remember?

  • Bitmap as mask

    I have a few imported images in my library I'd like to use as a mask to fit over a video but I can't get it to work. Here's how it works so far. The imported image is a photoshop .psd with some transparent layers.
    import flash.display.Sprite;
    import flash.media.Video;
    import flash.display.MovieClip;
    public class Main extends Sprite {
    public function Main() {
         private var video:Video = new Video();
         private var dot:MovieClip = new Symbol1();
         video.width = 160;
         video.height = 90;
         video.x = 443; //Video position
         video.y = 190;
         addChild(video); //Add video to stage
         dot.x = video.x;
         dot.y = video.y;
         addChild(dot);
         video.mask = dot;
    This doesn't work. The video just gets masked by the whole image, and not the shape with the trasparent layer.
    So I figure I'd have to convert the psd to a bitmap, cause it sounds like you can only use bitmaps. So I just draged the psd image into flash to get a bitmapdata file in my library. But it still doesn't work. Here's the new code:
    private var dot:BitmapData = new Bitmap6;
    public function main {
              video.x = 443; //Video position
                                            video.y = 190;
                                            addChild(video); //Add video to stage
                                            dot.x = video.x;
                                            dot.y = video.y;
                                            addChild(dot);
                                            video.mask = dot;
    but now I get these compiler errors:
    1119: Access of possibly undefined property x through a reference with static type flash.display:BitmapData.
    1119: Access of possibly undefined property y through a reference with static type flash.display:BitmapData.
    1067: Implicit coercion of a value of type flash.display:BitmapData to an unrelated type flash.display:DisplayObject.
    1067: Implicit coercion of a value of type flash.display:BitmapData to an unrelated type flash.display:DisplayObject.
    So now I'm not sure what to do. Can anybody help me out?
    Thanks, if anyone can help.

    Nevermind, totally figured it out on my own. The image needs to be imported as a png or as a bitmap. Then:
    public class Main extends Sprite {
    public function Main() {
         private var video:Video = new Video();
         private var dot:BitmapData = new Symbol1();
         private var mymask:Bitmap = new Bitmap(dot);
         video.width = 160;
         video.height = 90;
         video.x = 443; //Video position
         video.y = 190;
         addChild(video); //Add video to stage
                video.cacheAsBitmap = true;  // this is pretty important
                mymask.cacheAsBitmap = true;
         mymask.x = video.x;
         mymask.y = video.y;
         addChild(mymask);
         video.mask = mymask;
    Well... thanks anyway to anyone.

  • Collage videos

    Hi there
    How to collage two or more videos to one big video ( which both of them are playing in one ) like this:
    Thank you!!!

    Assemble your clips and edit them to the way you want. Each can be added to your "start" video and repositioned via the Movie Properties window. Further editing can delete tracks (like the audio until you want to use it). Frame by frame editing is possible.
    Each video track can also have a level of "transparency" and video "masks" that can hide or shape the video track to blend it into the background image.
    All of my Web pages are offline so I can't show you an example file.

  • Tracking a blur

    I want to blur out a person in a video. I need it to be an oval or irregular shape. So I dulicated the video, Masked the upper layer, and applied the blur to the mask, then used animation to have the mask follow the person that I an blurring out. The problem is when the blur reaches the edge of the video screen it starts to sharpen up again. It is like the blur becomes feathered as it hits the edge of the screen, and you might be able to see the person I am trying blur out as he goes off camera. Is their something that I can do to fix this?
    Thanks

    Select the blur filter in the layers tab. In the Filters tab of the Inspector, select the Crop checkbox.

  • Best Slideshow Approach....

    Hello There,
    I was just wondering what the best way to create a sideshow for several band photo's for a web site would be.
    I have iLife, QuickTime Pro, an older version of Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004, RapidWeaver 3.6.7, and I'm still using 10.4.11.
    What's the most compatible across the board, Flash, QuickTime, or what??
    Of course it will have music etc..
    I'd like to have the photo's fairly good sized, yet not too big file size wise..
    Thanks for any help you can offer..

    Easiest and smallest file size would a QuickTime file made with Pro.
    Simply open your image files, copy, switch to the audio track, make a selection and add the image file "Scaled to the selection".
    QuickTime .mov files can have up to 99 "tracks" and each can have video "masks", "transparency" levels and "layers". This allows you to have a video "background" image and 97 other images tracks positioned anywhere over the background.
    QuickTime .mov files can also have "text" tracks. Real, scalable text that can be scrolled, colored and even use "karaoke" styles.
    QuickTime .mov files can also contain "links". A click on the file could send the viewer to a Web page for more information (a Web page that sells your music for example). Some of mine as examples:

    When I do that it only makes a short portion (the top video) color somehow it shortens the clip to 2 seconds, I tried to edit for the full 47 second clip (just a sample to play with) but it keeps going back to 2 seconds for the top video.
    Any other ideas?  I do have Final Cut Pro as well as Adobe After Effects as well, but I just figured iMovie would be easiest way to do this simple effect...
