Video/mp4 attachments incredibly slow in Mail
When I receive an email with an mp4 attachment (from my remote camera), it appears mail is trying to preview the attachment and it locks up mail for 5-10 seconds. I get the spinning rainbow and I can't do anything else until it completes. The video attachments are about 1MB, so not huge. A 10MB non-video attachment is fast.
Note, my mail server is gmail and I "Keep copies of messages and attachments for offline viewing". I'm running Lion 10.7.2, same experience in Lion prior version.
Figured it out (or at least found a fix). The folder was marked as shared, but somehow filesharing had gotten turned off during the upgrade. I reenabled filesharing, set the folder back to shared, and everything works perfectly again.

Just got a new iPad2 last week, installed OK, updated to iOS 5.0, able to access my home's wireless network. However, it is incredibly slow in loading web pages, so that most web sites time out before they will load, like http://finance/yahoo, which I have to use my desktop (Windows XP) or laptop (Windows 7) computers to access, since the iPad will time out almost every time before it can open the site. Same for most other sites, unless real simple like my own web site, which will open OK.
Apple tech support was no help at all. Any suggestions, other than buying a new router?Have you tried (1) restarting your router, and (2) resetting the wifi on the iPad? To do #2, go to Settings, General, Reset, Reset Network Settings.

Early 2011 MacBook Pro incredibly slow after installing Mavericks
I'm really hoping someone can help me out. As per the subject line, I installed Mavericks on day one (and learned my lesson!).
Since installing Mavericks my MacBook Pro runs incredibly slow. If I open the Mail App and Safari - it almost grinds to a halt. I have the "Memory Clean" App which I now have to run constantly (it appears to help a little) and I try to only launch one app at a time where possible, but it's not really pratical.
As an aside, my MacBook ran really well with Mountain Lion, so there's little doubt to my mind that Mavericks is the culprit.
I'd be eternally grateful for any help & advice :-)
I spotted other people advise running EtreCheck, here are my results:

CleanMyMac is crapware.
Crapware is anything that purports to "optimize", "clean", "accelerate", "monitor", or "protect" your Mac. These apps are unnecessary, poorly written, overpriced (if they were free, they'd still be overpriced), and harmful. The people who sell this stuff know this, but they keep selling it because people keep buying it. They can damage your OS and be difficult to uninstall.
I would try to uninstall it, but if that fails, you may have to erase your HD and do a clean install. -
Mac desktop running incredibly slow.
Hi I have a 2010 Imac which is running incredibly slow!
3.06 GHz processor, 4GB memory running OS X Yosemite
I was hoping someone could please help me get to the bottom of what is wrong with it - i did wonder does it need a new hard drive? The original hard drive was replaced by Apple under warranty in summer 2013.
It was running really slow and then last week I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.3 which seemed to give it a new lease of life. however yesterday there was a power cut and since I have restarted it it is taking forever to do the smallest task. It takes about a minute to open up mail and then you have to wait around 30 secs to see the messages, then wait even longer to click and write.
Having looked up common faults I have tried looking at the utilities section but there is nothing showing a high percentage and I really don't know what else to do?
I have done an Etrecheck as recommended by support and have attached it below:
Can anyone advise why it is going so slow and what do all the red bits on the etre check results actually mean?
Many Thanks
Catriona

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." Incredibly slow internet (Connected through airport)
Hey there!
I just got myself a new Macbook around 2 months ago and so far I'm very happy with it. I haven't had any problems except for one.
I'm connected to the internet wireless through Airport and since about a week ago loading web pages is going incredibly slow, whether I use Safari or Firefox. I didn't have this problem before and I didn't change any internet settings. Nothing else changed eigher. I'm still connected to the same network and I didn't install any dodgy programs on my network. Downloading or loading videos doesn't seem to be a problem though. When downloading from a fast server like mac or windows (I know I shouldn't but hey, all my friends use msn ;)) I can easily make the 300 kb/sec. Also waching video's on apple.com/trailers isn't a problem. It's only the loading of web pages or sending e-mails. It sometimes takes up to half a minute to even load google.com. I'm not sure but it might have started after a software update. not at all sure though! Can anybody help me please! Thanks!
Regards from the Netherlands,
Jop

Two things to try first...
Fix Permissions using the Disk Utility, then reboot. or better yet, get Applejack...
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Try putting these in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers:
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
Might be better ones for you over there, but worth a try.

My iMac is running incredibly slow
Hello:
My iMac has been dragging lately and I'm wondering what is the best way to correct the issue. After searching the forums, I saw that running EtreCheck could assist in the experts' pinpointing issues. I've done so and included the Summary below:
Problem description:

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

17" i7 MacBook Pro incredibly slow
My i7 macbook Pro has become incredibly slow. Boot time is well over 3 minutes, bringing up a program (such as Microsoft Word or Pages) takes upto 2 additional minutes. When I look at the activity monitor, it does not appear that the machine is CPU bound--- CPU sits there at about 10-20% utilization at the most. I have a 7200 RPM drive, but it almost looks like it takes a long time to load. I have tried many programs: Disk optimization, DIsk Warrior, Clean my Mac, Mac Keeper.... so I have dedragmented my disk, cleaned all the caches, got rid of temp files, and done basically everything I can do. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong? I do not have many programs that I run regularly;; Mainly Safair, Chrome, Microsoft Office, iWork, and Mail. The vintage of the machine is June 2010. MacKeeper is saying my machine is at optimized. I have also removed virtualy all the programs that I had at startup including Growl, Flip4Mac. I have also cleaned my desktop.
Ideas will be appreciated. I am now spending more time on my MacBook Air which is blazingly fast, but I am constrained by the small hard drive and the small screen.
Thanks,
Paul

Says it all right there. Uninstall this P.O.S. software if you can, they don't provide a method neither.
The Mac based Internet wants to crucify these jerks. It's as bad as MacDefender.
Download the free Easy Find here, it allows more deeper of a search than Spotlight, even invisible files. Seek and destroy MacKeeper.
http://www.devon-technologies.com/download/index.html
When you first boot your machine and you have no programs open, look for a process that consuming a lot of CPU, it's likely your culprit, you can force quit it.
Look at your System Preferences > Accounts > log-in items for anything your not using and click the "-" to stop it being a log in item.
OnyX will deep system clean a Mac, do ALL the cleaning and maintenance tasks and reboot, it will do it without installing or running anything afterwards, unlike those other programs.
http://www.titanium.free.fr/
What I suspect is your caches are thrown off by the defrag. Do the OnyX and remove MacKeeper, I think you'll be a happy camper after that.
When you reboot, there should be hardly anything running, your CPU usage should nearly zero.
If all this fails, your looking at backing up your data. Hold c and booting off the installer disk that comes with your computer and using Disk Utility to Erase, format HFS+ Journaled and reinstalling OS X. Programs from fresh sources and files from backup.
Next time Carbon Copy Cloner your boot drive to a external drive, it's hold option bootable and you can recover/repair, run the computer off the clone or reverse clone if need be. -

Incredibly Slow with Spinning Ball
In the last week my MacBook Pro has become incredibly slow. I have contacted Apple Support, done a safe start, verified the disk with no issues. Even typing into this box is met with constant pauses and freezes.
Below is a check I did through EtreCheck. Can anyone tell me what the issue may be. This makes no sense to me.

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Hi. I'm new-ish to the Mac world. I've had my Mac for a couple of months and have had no complaints at all. I have the 20" iMac, the one before the 24" was released.
However, lately, my Mac is incredibly slow. Applications quit or stall out for no particular reason, it takes a millenium for programs to start up, and half the time when I try to restart, I have to click the restart option 3-4 times to get it to actually restart.
Is there any particular reason for this, and how do I fix it. I dont have that many files on my computer so formatting wouldn't be that much of a problem at all. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Charlie FrySubcutaneousPhat & ipod4meok, the very first thing you should do is open process viewer located in appications/utilities/Activity monitor. In Activity monitor click where it says %CPU and it will list the applications that are using all of your CPU. Sometimes just quitting an application and trashing that applications preferences located in your user account ~/library/preferences will fix you problem. Still not working properly then open disk utility located in applications/utilities/disk utility and then reset permissions. After you are done with that and the Disk utility is still open click the verify disk button. It won't fix your hard drive but it will say if something is wrong. Mac still not working properly, then add another user in the System Preference pane which can be accessed in the drop down menu from the Apple in the top left corner. Login as the new user and if your Mac is quick again then it is a problem in your account only however if it is still slow then you have a system wide problem, possibly a corrupt file. If after you add a new user and it is still slow then my suggestion rather than spending hours troubleshooting is to do an archive and install off your original install disk. You can drag the mail folder and other important files over to the new system file from the old and have fresh start. You will have to run software update more than once but you should be good as new. Someone else in this thread was talking about memory well when I first bought my iMac it came with the stock 512mb and ran very quick. I had already ordered another 512mb from OWC but the mail(post office) was running slow. I only had problems with one application Adobe Photoshop which is still just as slow as it was with 512mb vs. 1 gig. Bottom line is Adobe needs to update their software I don't need to update my Mac so take all the memory talk with a grain of salt. Still having problems after this post back here and their are a few other tests to run.

iPhoto 11 (upgrade) is incredibly slow. Any ideas why?
It took me from Friday afternoon until Monday morning to narrow this down, but here's what it was on my system, which has 6,300+ photos and a library size of 17+ GB:
It wasn't the number of photos, or the size of the library, or Faces, or Spotlight, or anything "normal" that was causing my machine to virtually lock up about a minute after launching iPhoto '11 (9.1.3). Activity Monitor showed almost no CPU activity, and little to no disk or network activity.
What was causing the slow-down was something in the Accounts preference within iPhoto. I had about half a dozen e-mail accounts, Facebook, Flickr, and MobileMe listed as accounts. Once I deleted them, iPhoto sprang back to life.
I have since discovered that iPhoto will continue to wait for services in your Accounts preferences to come on-line indefinitely ... with no warning or notice that it is doing so. While it is waiting, it for some reason kills the performance of your entire system, so whatever other applications you have running (including Finder and Dock) will be extremely unresponsive. -
Tengo Windows 7 y iTunes 11.0.4.4.
Muchas gracias a tod@s por anticipado!!Google Translate:

It appears that the specifics of the videos are not compatible with the iPod. There are many variations in .mov and .mp4 formats. The 4G iPod supports these formats:
H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format -

IDVD is incredibly slow when burning to DVD
Hi,
I have just recently upgraded to iLife 06...why is iDVD so incredibly slow. It took nearly 3 hours to burn a 43 minute DVD....I don't understand.
My computer is iMac G5 1.8GHZ PowerPC
Memory is 1.25 GB
It is so frustrating. Is anyone else having this problem?I was surprised how long my MacBook has been taking to burn DVDs. It took about 4 hours to burn 2 episodes of Lost with "better quality" — couldn't use "better performance" because it can't even fit 84 minutes of video on a DVD — and I noticed that iDVD came nowhere near using all of my processing power. I've got 2 gigs of ram and a 2 GHz processor, so I would like it if iDVD actually used all of it, when I'm not doing anything else. I saw about 130% CPU usage max (out of 200%). Anyone know how to bump up iDVD's process priority or something to make it use all of the power it can?
Edit: I forgot to mention that the episodes were divx or xvid files to start with, so I'm not sure if that slows it down a lot, since it has to transcode. -
MacBook Pro incredibly slow slow slow
i have a week old macbook pro (2.8Ghz, 4Gb) and have not installed any apps yet, but just the bootup and running safari and mail is insanely slow.
its 10.5.7, and my almost dead, 8 yr old TiBook 667 is actually faster!!
infuriating, frustrating, ***?!?!
anyone else?Slightly Different situation here. My MacBook Pro is about 3.5 years old (2.16 GHZ, 3GB(max)Ram) and it has been running incredibly slow since installing snow leopard. To be fair, I've had some issues with the user account all of my info is on before (I use a separate user account for Logic Pro and Photoshop). That other account on the same machine runs fine. I've found lots of forum posts telling people to repair disk permissions, try a new user etc. I've done all of that, the permissions are all fine, cache is freshly cleared and if I open Safari and Mail at the same time and try to type john in a search bar it shows as jjjjjjjjjjjjoooooooooohhhhhhhhhhnnnnnnnnn.
So my question: another user profile works, how do I get my stuff to it / what do I do if I know my main user profile isn't working right?

Can anyone give me some advice. I'm about to get a new 24inch iMac at work but I'm planning to keep my G4 so I still have access to OS 9.2.2. I'd like to get rid of the 21 inch CRT I currently use with the G4 as it's 8 years old and seen better days.
