Video not importing correctly into After Effects CS5

I just downloaded a trial version of After Effects CS5 to work on a couple corporate videos, but I'm having issues importing the footage (.WMV). When I try to import, I get a message saying that there is an unnamed alpha layer (with a few options on how to fix the alpha layer). Regardless of the option I choose, only the bottom half of my footage imports. It looks like this.
How can I fix this?

Probably an issue with whatever created the files in the first place. WMV doesn't have Alpha, but can have multiple streams... anyway, AE is crap at dealing with such stuff, so convert it using an external tool like Handbrake or whatever...

  • Bridge not importing files into After Effects

From AE I go to File > Browse in Bridge...
Bridge opens up and I find the file I want.  If I double click the file, an AI for instance, it opens the file within Illustrator.  I could find, double click it, and it opens in Photoshop.
I feel as though I'm missing how to import files into After Effects by using bridge.
    I'm running CC 2014 on a Win 7 machine.

  • Problems importing iPhone 4 video into After Effects CS5 - Audio sync out

    Hi there,
I am currently experiencing problems trying to import iPhone 4 video into After Effects CS5.
Firstly i'd like to note that the video plays perfectly fine on the iPhone, VLC and in Quicktime Player. The audio and video is in sync.
When I add the footage to After Effects the video becomes slightly out of sync with the audio. I have noticed this in RAM preview and also in renders I did just to test.
I also want to note that, both my iPhone and After Effects have latest software updates.
    Thanks for your help

    Thanks Rick and Mylenium
    Thanks that worked!
I thought that changing the frame rate in the composition settings would have worked.
Instead what I should have done is to go the the footage in the Project Panel then right-click on the footage > Interpret Footage > Main... then Conform to frame rate: Frame rate: 23.986607 (or whatever more accurate frame rate your footage actually is)
I used the more accurate frame rate reading from VLC which went to 5 decimal places. I got that info from the top menu in Tools > Codec Information
Its a shame AE doesn't  pick up on the more accurate fps. It seems that all the videos from my iPhone 4 have slightly different frame rates and I guess I will have to interpret each clip properly.
I hear that the frame rate on the iPhone 4 is different depending on the lighting? I wonder why that would be the case?
Hope this helps anybody else that might face this problem.
    Cheers

  • What is the best video format for importing into After Effects CS5

Please look at this video, work in progress.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49_wbdKALQk
The opening, featuring a ribbon of videos, was created in After Effects, using Digieffects Freeform.
The  issue is the poor quality of the videos that are featured in the  opening -- compared to the higher quality of videos from the original Premiere  project., which you can see at the end of the clip.
To create the After Effects project, I exported a series of video clips from Premiere  to mp4.
Then I imported them into AfterEffects.
The bottom line, and the purpose of this question, is I am thinking that  MP4 was not the best choice for the Adobe Premiere export.
What  is the best format to export video from in Premiere Pro CS5 to import  into after effects, or to import into any other editing program,  incuding importing right back into Adobe Premiere, if that is eever  needed.
    AVI?
    MOV
    MP4
And any other settings that will result with the highest qualiity videos for importing.
    Thanks

To follow on with Wade's suggestion...
There are lots of ways to get movies and projects and other things back and forth between After Effects and Premiere Pro. This page outlines them:
"Working with Premiere Pro and After Effects"
If you must render and export a movie out of one application to bring it into another, there is a very basic piece of video workflow advice that you need to keep in mind (which applies to _all_ video software, not just After Effects and Premiere Pro):
If you're creating a movie to be used in the next step of a post-production pipeline, you _never_ want to use a format that does lossy compression. You either use no compression or (preferable) lossless compression. Examples of codecs that provide lossless compression are the Animation codec and PNG codec at the highest quality settings; these can be used in a QuickTime container, for example. Never compress a movie with lossy compression except at the very end of your pipeline, when you're creating the final movie for distribution.
MP4 (MPEG-4) is a lossy codec. The quality loss is acceptable for the last stage in the pipeline, but it's not acceptable for an intermediate file.
It seems that you would benefit from reading this and and working your way through this.

  • Problem importing .vpe into After Effects CC 2014

I am having Issues importing .vpe files exported from Photoshop CC 2014 (2014.1.0 - most recent update to date) into After Effects CC 2014 (13.0.2.3 - latest update to date) on Mac OSX Mavericks 10.9.4. After a (lengthy) couple of chats to Adobe customer support I was advised to update both programs to fix my original issue outlined in this thread VPE issue and this has half way fixed my issues (The export from Photoshop now works properly).
The problem I have now is that when importing the .vpe file to After Effects I get an error:
"Unable to execute script at line 107. Function newLayer.transform[sel].setValue is undefined".
The process creates a composition and a folder which is meant to contain the .png's. Inside the composition, the one imported .png is present, but no parent or camera layers.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Is the bug present on Windows? Does anyone know if this will be fixed in the update forthcoming? It isn't listed as one of the stand out bug fixes.
    Thanks
    Simon

To be honest, its been so long that i'd actually forgotten whether the issue was fixed, just went through the process here to check...
That'll be a no then, thanks Adobe.
We're getting kinda tired of the Beta nature of the CC suite here in my department at work. Our internet speeds are currently not great and so having to download so many updates is a bit of an issue. Is there any other way to download updates remotely? That is to say on a different machine than the install of After Effects? Could I perhaps download update files at home, put them on a USB drive and bring them in?

  • Random sync problems importing aaf into After Effects from Avid

The source footage is 23.98 H.264. The Avid is importing DNX36 and editing in a 23.98 timeline. When the AAF is brought into After Effects the clips are all there but the sync drifts and in some cases is randomly more out of sync than other clips.

  • Photoshop CS6 PSDs into After Effects CS5.5

    Hi there,
Our graphics department have recently upgrade Photoshop to CS6 version 13.0 x64. I am trying to open a .psd file they have created in After Effects CS5.5 version 10.5.1.2. However I get the following message:
'After Effects error: could not open (.psd name) because it is not a valid Photoshop document. ( 51 :: 19 )'
Is there any way they can save their photoshop files differently so that they will open or do I need to upgrade to After Effects CS6?
Thanks in advance for the help.
(wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the photoshop forum - thought I would try here first though)

I've never encountered such an issue, and switch between both versions regularly.  On the machine I'm working on right now I have CS6 Creative Cloud installed, but do most of my AE work in CS5 or 5.5 because the clients I'm working for haven't upgarded yet.  But all my PSD work is done in CS6.
Is there anything unusual in the file, ie 3D content?  As Mylenium says, PS 3D has changed and is no longer supported by AE.  Otherwise, are you moving between platforms, ie Windows to Mac?  Does the file have a valid PSD extension?

  • Really my question is about after effects, which then renders to a quick time movie.  I have imported music into after effects many times, and all of a sudden after import and playing it under ram preview, it stops about 4/5 through the work.

when I import a song into after effects it only plays 4/5 and then stops.  I'm viewing it in RAM preview.
    the composition time is fine.
    can you help me???
    Roxanne

    See this:
"FAQ: Why does RAM preview only play part of my composition?"

  • Imported song into After Effects CS6 and won't fully render.

I imported a song into After Effects CS6 to use audio waveforms. I click RAM preview but it won't render or play past 18 seconds. What am I doing wrong and how do I render the entire audio track so it will actually play all the way through with the effects on it.

Ram preview length is determined by the amount of available ram. It is also usually limited to the work area. Either lower the resolution of the comp window or extend the work area.
Please read the FAQ section at the top of the forum. You'll have your answer there.

  • Illustrator layers into After Effects CS5

A client supplied an eps Logo with one layer and many "sub-layers" (sorry, don't know Illustrator well enough to call them anything else but
it's broken down to every tiny element such as every letter, portions of graphics, etc.),
When importing into AE CS5, it just recognizes the one "layer" like it was flattened. How do I separate these other layers in AI or After Effects
    so I can animate them?

You need to import the document as a composition to get access to the individual layers.
See this page for information on preparing files in Illustrator: "Preparing and importing Illustrator files"
See this page for information about importing layered still images as compositions: "Importing a still image as a composition"

  • FW HTML not importing correctly into DW

    Hello,
I have made a navbar in FW and exported it following some tutorials I've watched.  I have imported it into some of the pages on my site in DW and the import works fine.  However, on a number of other pages, I insert my cursor in the "topnav" div and when I import it, the table goes straight to the top of the code and when I refresh the CSS, all my styles from before disappear and becomes a blank white page.  I think it may have something to do with my stylesheet because the other pages that it does work properly on is a different stylesheet, but I cannot figure out where the issue is.
I have attached code below.  The first section is what it looks like when I try to import the navbar into the topnav div.  The second section is the code for the stylesheet that goes along with it.  And third, is the CSS code for the one that works correctly.
I appreciate any help given.  Thanks!

With this problem, it would be better to give us a link to an online web page. It's easier to spot the problem than to wade through a lot of code and you would have better success in getting others in the forum to help.
One problem that sticks out is that you imported the code generated by FW into the head section of your document. It should be in the body section. That problem should be obvious to you if you know a little about markup and can recognize javascript. I mention this because if you don't know what you're doing, then importing FW images and code into DW can be very confusing. It might be easier for you to work on the Dreamweaver side and find a good tutorial about building a menu in DW. Most web designers will tell you that it's not a good idea to use code generated by Fireworks although it can work.
Let me make two points. First, if some of your pages are working okay (you said the import worked for some pages), then use a page that is working to override a page that is not working by doing a Save As and then do a little editing if necessary.
Second, if your styles are not working in your page, you probably have a link problem. In the markup you provided, I don't see a link to your css stylesheet on your web page. But, again, if you do a Save As using a page that works, this problem should be solved by acting on the advice of the first point.

  • AVI video not importing correctly

My codecs just got messed up today when I was trying something out and so I had to download new ones. When I try to import .avi files now, the footage, during certain times, has some issues. (It's hard to describe) I wouldn't just say it's pixelated, but large pixels are distorted showing other colors, in the shape of some objects in the video. It does this every few seconds. The video is compressed, too. Even after I render the movie, it still does this. The playback speed is normal, it's just these pixels that keep destroying the footag. It's almost as if the program is not conforming the video correctly when I am importing it, and it's corrupting the video. What do I need to do to fix this? Additional codec(s)? I used to be able to import .avi movies with no problem. This is really bugging me. Thanks!

If you look at the CODEC, it is Xvid, the opensource version of DivX, just as I suspected. These will almost never work in PrE. The best workflow is to go to before the Xvid compression (these are heavily compressed, loosing a ton of data and quality), or to convert them to DV-AVI Type II files with 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV Audio. I use DigitalMedia Converter, but it is shareware. Many users sing the praises of the free Prism to do the conversions. I have never used it, but many here have, and give it very high marks.
Note: no conversion program can ever reclaim that lost data and quality. It is lost and gone forever. That is why my first option was to go back to before that compression was applied. However, conversion will yield files that can be edited with both Video and Audio.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
[Edit] not sure why/how they were working before. Usually, with either the Xvid, or DivX CODEC's, one will get a Cannot Import error, or will get either Audio, or Video only. I have never been able to edit any Xvid, or DivX files, in either PrE, or PrPro - never even once. I just convert, if the client cannot get original source files, and I even have a quality loss diagram to show them how the footage will look - not very good, IMHO. I make them sign-off on that quality loss, before I start.

  • Sony TRV-350 8mm will not import correctly into iMovie 8.0.4 (Any ideas?)

I purchased a Sony TRV-350 because it is supposed to play all 8mm tapes, and has a bridge function that converts analog signal to DV. The camcorder also has inputs to connect a VCR to the camcorder and convert the signal to DV. I am trying to import hundreds of VHS and 8mm tapes to iMovie. I connect the camcorder via firewire to the computer. The computer recognizes the camcorder and has control of the camcorder. When I try to import the video everything seems fine. I can import a five second clip or twenty min. clip. The problem starts after you click "Done" on the importing screen. The importing screen closes, and the clip appears in iMovie. The problem is when viewing the clip in iMovie it is only half the length of the import. (I import a 10 min clip, only 5 min shows in iMovie) It seems like every other second is missing. So far I have tried these trouble shooting tips.
    1. Made sure the camera DV feature is turned on
    2. Made sure the camera is set to ilink
    3. The camera is set to NTSC with 30 FPS
    4. Opened played a note and close Garageband
Someone suggested I should try find a copy of iMovieHD (6.0.3) and try importing the videos. If you think this will work let me know.
Any suggestions, idea or help would be greatly appreciated. I am a new mac user, so please give detailed instructions.
    Thanks for your time.
    Tyrel

I believe the new 8 core mac pro only has firewire 800 connecters. So you would need a converter cable to connect your camera. Is that how you system is setup? If so, what kind of converter are you using? That could be the cause of your problem. A blue screen usually means you have some sort of connection issue.

  • .AVI video not importing correctly. Imports as audio only.

    System: window vista 64 bit
Project type: whatever the standard new project is at the startup screen
Problem: I am importing .avi video files and they are importing as audio only. it will not allow me to drag them into the video slot on the timeframe, and it displays only the speaker symbol in the media management area. Here's the funny bit. I used these files previously in another session June-July 2009, and they worked fine then. I am lost and need assistance!(PLEASE!!)
