Video on 2nd Monitor distorted and half sized

My superintendent has a X300 series laptop that he got when they first came out. We are running Windows XP Pro with SP3 on it. He has always connected a 2nd larger LCD screen on the vga output connector when in his office which has been working great until two months ago. Now the screen on the LCD monitor is somewhat distorted and is only half of the available screen width. We have changed resolutions, monitors, and video cables but nothing has worked. We do have the latest Microsoft patches and we use Sophos for virus protection.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
Bill

Bill, welcome to the forum,
it may be possible that a video driver has been installed automatically with Windows updates, I've seen occasions when this has happened and caused chaos. Try rolling back the driver to the original which should be found in c:\swtools\drivers\video, or download and install the current driver from here. Please ensure you follow the installation instructions on the site.
Hope this helps

  • Lost video on 2nd monitor after 10.10.3 update

Howdy.  Upgraded my main mac pro to Yosemite 10.10.3 this morning and find that video on a 2nd monitor (verified good) has gone away.  It seems to be a driver issue.  This is with a Radeon 5770.  It is still driving my main monitor without any problem, however, the 2nd is not getting signal and does not show in system profiler.
The monitor and cable/adapter chain has been checked and verified all the way to the card.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Eric.
Thanks for providing the easily accessible link with standard OP information.  I have reset PRAM and undergone all other hardware and software checks.  There is nothing wrong with the cabling, card, or monitor.
I can boot into earlier versions of the OS, going back to 10.5.  ALL except for 10.10.3 produce NTSC video on my Radeon 5770 as a 2nd monitor.  Something about the 10.10.3 update broke the 2nd display.  The problem is specific to 10.10.3 and no other versions of the OS.
I suspect a bug was introduced regarding multiple-display setups (I have 3) with 10.10.3, OR the feature set for multiple displays was changed without notice.  However, I can't seem to find a way to connect to apple support to investigate the issue without paying a service fee for the privilege.  I was really hoping I could get some actual insight into the issue, as I'm familiar with all standard troubleshooting and software issues.  I have, after all, but using Macs since 1987...
    Cheers.

  • Video card problems, monitor distortion

Hi, I have a 17 inch Apple Studio Display (ADC Connector). It's about three years old now. Just recently after I woke up my computer, the monitor suddenly had this crazy distortion that's a kind of banding that goes down the screen. I took a picture and posted it here:
    http://www.kickinthehead.org/temp/monitor_distortion.jpg
It actually looks a lot worse now. It's not just limited to the bands, really the entire image has crazy weird artifacts everywhere. Plus if I have a finder window open and then drag it around the screen, the window will be a nonsensical mess of randomly colored pixels. If I minimize the window and bring it back it will refresh somewhat and only be distorted like the rest of the monitor. Same goes for if I'm on a web page and scroll using smooth scrolling
I've tried reseating the card a number of times. The first time it worked for a few hours, but the last time I tried it was only working for a few seconds then went back to being heavily distorted. I tried also dusting out my computer and the card itself in hopes that would do something, but my monitor now probably looks worse than the picture I linked to.
I jiggled the connection, and at one point it looked all right if I put downward pressure on the cord (the screw wasn't in the slot so there was some room to move). My dilemma is I don't know if a new card will solve this problem, or if the connection problem is on the side of the motherboard. I can't really test it unless I get my hands on another card.
has anyone run into this problem before?
    Thanks
    Dual 2Ghz Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I am experiencing the same exact problems and anomolies as Derek with my 9800 pro 128mb and I am having the same conclusions while trouble shooting. I can tell you for sure that it is not a display conection problem for I am seeing it on 2 screens with a dual monitor set up on both a apple 23" lcd and an analog CRT.
During start up the boot screen displays clusters of virtical white lines running the length of the screen. While on the desktop I see this same blocky checkerboard type pateren that randomly changes but is also affected by on screen movement.
The problem first occured Saturday afternoon upon waking from sleep and got progesivly worse within minutes eventually rendering the computer unusable. The distortion flickers about randomly but also seems to be affected when the card is touched. I seem to recall waking from sleep to this problem in the past but it was fixed by a reboot. No such luck this time. I also tried reseating the card to find the distortion temporarally fixed, but then it came back worse then before.
The card is 2 years old now and has never been modified but has been overclocked by 5% for the past year or so using ATIcellerator II with no other problems.
Also, I am a bit concerned about the heatsink being burning hot to the touch within minutes of boot up.
So far this is the only forum I have been able to find concerning this problem. Any comments would help. In the mean time I am going to go shopping for a new card. Hopefully this is not more serious then a bad card.

  • Full screen video on 2nd monitor blacks out 1st screen

When I play a video full screen on a second monitor, iTunes blacks out the first screen and I can't see the Windows desktop. Is there a way around this?

I'm having this problem as well. Apparnetly the world thinks this is acceptable behavior. I do not. I'm trying to work and feed video from iTunes to an HDTV next to me. Why in the world would I want my 3 other monitors to blank???
Tripply amazing is that it's worked this way for quite a long time. Apple isn't fixing it, so they must think this is a great FEATURE.

  • Outputting video to 2nd monitor

    Hi there...
I have a G5 with the standard Ge Force FX 5200 which has one DVI and one ADC port.
I've just bought a 21.5' display to use as my main monitor (from the DVI port via a VGA converter), and I'm was wandering if I can use my old monitor (a 17' DVI/VGA) as a second monitor to display video on in Logic.
Presumably I would need either an ADC > DVI converter or an ADC > VGA converter to do it, but will the video card actually support this way of working?
Logic it appears can support this and I quote:
"Choosing the Video Output > Digital Cinema Desktop: Choose this option to preview your video on any available display unit that is connected to an AGP graphics card (not PCI). If you have 2 computer displays, one can be used to view the Logic interface, while the other can be used as a dedicated video monitor."
Also, will I have any issues with dimensions/resolution because the new monitor is 21.5' widescreen and the old one is 17' regular.
I hope someone can help (shiny stars for those that do)! This would really improve things for me - cheers, sidx

I don't know if your graphics card will support it, but you could try reposting your question here -

I expect you'll get more answers. If I were to guess, I'd think it would work, with something like this:

  • ITunes 9, no way to play fullscreen video in 2nd monitor?

In iTunes 8, videos would play fullscreen in whatever monitor the iTunes application window was opened to. In iTunes 9 this doesn't seem to matter, it's only playing in the Main monitor (monitor with menu bar).
    There's a script here:
    http://theappleblog.com/2009/07/29/workaround-itunes-video-and-dual-screens/
That sends videos out to QuickTime which has preferences which allow you to select what monitor to play full screen videos on, but I'd really like this back in iTunes...
    Any ideas out there?

I found a little bit or a work around... you can go into preferences under the "Playback" tab and select "Play Movies and TV Shows: in a separate window" and it will play full screen in the monitor you have it on. You can also right/control click (or "view" menu) and select fit to screen to get a near full screen experience while being able to work on the other monitor.
You are mistaken. You can only use fit to screen. Even so, your work around is a colossal waste of time as you could simply drag the video to the other screen much much quicker than opening the preferences and making that change. • Can't resize video in Sequence monitor window anymore ???

OK Help... I have been working on a project in CS4 and the project settings are HD 1080. I have been able to bring in other SD clips and simply "click" on the video in the monitor window and a box comes up around the video and I can resize it and then render and it looks acceptable. This works if I want to shrink it and have a black border also. Now the ability to do this is GONE ! Same computer - same everything. I click and there is no box or ability to re-size. Only thing I ever did was load up another project at one time in standard DV - NTSC and encoded with Encore.  Whats Wrong

Glad that you found it. You can also do the same thing with the Bounding Box, if you open the Effects Control Panel, and then click on the name Motion in the Effects list there, and you'll get a Bounding Box in the Program Panel. Personally, I like the numerical method, but some like the Bounding Box.
    Good luck,

  • MacBook Pro performance issues w/2nd monitor and FCP7

I have this MacBook Pro bought brand-new in January 2010:
      Model Name: MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 1
      Total Number Of Cores: 2
      L2 Cache: 6 MB
      Memory: 8 GB
      Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
and until today had never attached a second monitor to it. Today I hooked up my Samsung 24" to do some dual screen editing in Final Cut 7.0.3. I was unable to play back my video at full speed in the second monitor, and after a few seconds of skippy playback I'd get that error message about unable to play back video at full speed and to check my RT settings. I was using a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. My computer has no issues playing the video in the laptop's monitor at any resolution and any quality settings (I've never changed the RT settings or anything else in the menu ever but I tried every combination this time). I then tried using my TV as a 2nd monitor with an HDMI adapter. Same performance issues. I then tried my friend's newer 13" MBP 8,1 and it performed flawlessly with the same project & footage. I feel like my $3,000 computer should outperform a $1,200 one even if mine is a year and a half older. Any advice?
    Chris

Wow, you posted this perfectly to coincide with an identical problem, albeit using Logic Pro 9.1.5 rather than FCP.
Last week, I purchased a 23" external monitor to use alongside my "flagship" 2011 15" hi-res, 2.3 i7 Macbook Pro with 8Gb of RAM.
It is connected via a mini-DVI to D-sub analog (not that that should matter?) and all appeared fine.
The first issue I had was with my MBP's fan now running CONSTANTLY, when I have the second monitor attached. Even when the machine is completely idle.
When using the machine to record audio, this is a fairly hefty problem and not something I had anticipated - indeed why would I anticipate such a thing?
What is far, far worse though is that over the last few days I have had repeated problems with performance drop-outs and errors in Logic and I have trying to fathom out why. Realising that the only major system change made, was the above monitor connection, I ran some tests.
I restarted my MBP, no other apps were running and with my new 23" monitor attached acting as main display with MBP built in display on as secondary
I loaded up a fairly demanding Logic project which was hitting 40% to 60% CPU usage when using the built in MBP display last week
I ran activity monitor and had CPU usage history open
The above project now repeatedly overloads and playback halts in a given 8 bar section - with CPU at 80% most of the time
I disconnected the external display, no shut down, I just let the machine switch to the built in 15".
Started the same project, the same 8 bar section and hey presto - CPU usage back down to 40% to 60%
The above was reflected in the CPU usage history with the graph showing CPU use down by about a half, when running this Logic project WITHOUT the external display.
There is a very useful benchmark Logic project that has been used as a test by many users to gauge Logic performance on given Apple hardware.
The project has about 100 tracks pre-configured with CPU intensive plugins, designed to tax the CPU.
The idea is that you load up the project with tracks muted, press play and then unmute the tracks steadily until Logic us unable to play contiunously because of a system performance error.
On my MBP, with the external monitor NOT attached, I can play back around 50 of the audio tracks in this benchmark project.
With the monitor attached, I can get about 22 tracks playing.... which is actually a far worse a performance drop (-50% I think!?) than with the first example!
I did also try with just the external monitor attached and not the MBP display and performance was about 10% better than with dual monitors - so still extremely poor, to say the least.
This machine is the flagship MBP and has a dedicated AMD Radeon HD6750 GPU which should take care of most if not ALL graphics processing - I mean it's capable of running some pretty demanding games!
Putting aside the issue of constant fan noise, there is no reason AT ALL, why using an external monitor should tax the i7 CPU this way - it's not as though Logic is graphically demanding... far from it.
I am on 10.6.8, Logic 9.1.5, all apps up to date via "Software Update".
I will of course, be contacting Apple...

  • 1 Lightning port as both 2nd monitor AND storage SSD? - 21" 2011 iMac

    Hello!
I am considering picking up my first SSD drive for use as a work horse for streaming video and audio for my prosumer use.  My 21" 2011 iMac only has the one lightning port, which I plug my old 19" LCD monitor into for the extra screen real estate.  Not wanting to bottleneck the SSD speed by connecting it to USB 2 or even FireWire, does such a throughput device exist that would allow the one lightning port to support both  my 19" display as well as a mounted, external SSD drive?  I know that the lightning port had an expandable future, but I'm not sure if this is possible.  If it IS possible, I would imagine doing so would still be expensive.  Thanks a bunch!

Haha, THUNDERBOLT!   Sorry, mate.  I must have been thinking of the newer iPad/iPhone connector.  Goes to show you how much mind I've paid to apples new port.  Anyway, that's great news.  Thank you.  I was pessimistic about their being enough bandwidth to fully support my 2nd monitor in addition to the top notch speeds of an SSD.  I was curious to know where there might be any sacrifices one way or another.

  • My 2nd Monitor not showing up as a Video Device in P Pro Preferences- Playback

I'm on P Pro CC (Windows) and want to add my 2nd monitor (a Samsung HDTV via HDMI) for editing.  It's all connected, but when I go into Edit->Preferences->Playback, I just see one video device and that's the Adobe TV.  It doesn't show a 2nd device.  Any ideas on how to get this going so I can use the 2nd monitor to display the program monitor separately?  Thanks.  (BTW, the computer itself is able to recognize the monitor, because it mirrors the computers display.)

Yeah, you were on the right track.  Finally figured it out, and I had my computer display settings for mirror.   I changed those to some other setting (can't remember), and then Premiere recognized it as a 2nd monitor.  As soon as it worked, I was smacked with the image of video on the new monitor...and that monitor's quality was horrible.  So time to return the monitor, and leave dual monitor setup for another day when I have time to research and get a good monitor.  Plus all audio got piped into monitors **** speakers...so I will have to sort the audio out when I sort the new monitor out.  Another day.  Thanks for the reply.  Editing that feature I was prepping the last time we spoke on audio quality, 24/96 etc, so thought dual display would give me some more real estate when dealing with clips in the timeline.  Next feature, we'll definitely set up editing station properly ahead of time.

  • With Half-Sized Frame and SP/LP error, am I getting lower quality?

Seven years ago, I recorded some videos with my Canon ZR miniDV camcorder.  I want to preserve the quality of these videos by archiving them on my Mac.  The read head on this camcorder is broken. So, I'm borrowing my brother's Sony Digital Handycam DCR-PC110 NTSC to play these miniDV video tapes.
When I use iMovie 6 to import, I get this message:
"The camera is sending half-sized frames, which iMovie can’t accept. Check your camera’s record mode (this is the setting that affects recording quality, which determines the total recording time on a tape). The mode must be set to “SP” or “LP.” If that doesn't help, try removing all the cables and batteries from the camera, wait a minute, replace them, and then reset the date, time, and record mode."
The recording mode is already set to "SP". However, I still cannot import. Every time I try to play the video, it shows a fraction of a second of the video and then it stops. If I disconnect the camera from the Mac, I can play the video without a problem. It seems that iMovie 6 will not allow me to play this video.
Does anybody know what the problem is?
With my brother's miniDV tapes, I don't get this problem on his Sony Digital Handycam.
From some research, I read that it might have something to do with playing a PAL recording instead of NTSC.  However, my cameras are NTSC.  I've never (consciously or remember to) use PAL.  iMovie 6 is set to 29.97 bps frame rate, which is supposedly NTSC.
I tried the suggestion from this posting:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/1808010#1808010
    Which is:
    -  I disconnected the camera from the Mac.
    -  Started up iMovie 6.
    -  Started playing my miniDV tape.
    -  Connected the firewire from the camera to the Mac
Now, I can play and import the miniDV video on iMovie 6.  However, I'm curious as to whether iMovie is inputting NTSC and saving into PAL, or vice versa.  Therefore, I'm concerned about the possibility of losing quality.  Would anybody know if I will be losing quality?

"..the last 43 minutes of clips, cannot play well on my Canon camcorder.."
Run through the tapes to see how many total minutes of material you have on these tapes. A miniDV tape records a maximum of 63 mins at Standard Play rate, and up to about 90 mins at LP (Long Play) rate.
If you have more than 63 mins of material on these tapes, then the recording was made at LP rate.
At LP rate, the tape moves at 2/3 the speed of SP, which means that the video tracks recorded on the tape are very narrow. This means that when those tapes are played in a different camcorder the heads may read the tape properly, because there's no margin for error on these very narrow tracks. When replaying an LP tape, the camcorder's heads may not properly align with the recorded track, giving the 'half frame' error you mentioned.
No camera manufacturer guarantees that any LP material will play correctly on any camcorder other than the one on which it was recorded (because of these narrow LP tracks). [Sony created the professional 'DVCAM' speed - one-and-a-half-times normal SP speed, so two-thirds the recording time - to provide -w-i-d-e-r- tracks than normal, and thus ensure that professional DV recordings can be played back and edited on equipment other than the camcorder which was used
    for shooting the material.]
The only solution for LP tapes is to try importing from as many different camcorders as possible till you find one which will do the job. (I had to do exactly the same thing last week, and found that various other Sony 'consumer-grade' camcorders - the material was recorded on a Sony - couldn't 'lock onto' the LP track, but professional or 'prosumer' (more expensive) Canon (XLH1) and Sony (FX1) camcorders could play the old LP material.)
Before trying to play old tapes, whether SP or LP, always wind them fast-forward all the way to the end, then rewind them - at least once - to make sure that the tape layers don't stick together, and to ease the stresses in the tape. You should also do this once a year to every recorded tape, to avoid stresses, pinching, and 'print-through' (seepage of magnetism from one layer of tape to others).
P.S: Have you tried cleaning the 'broken' head on your old Canon? Dip a cotton bud in methylated spirits - or, better still, carbon tetrachloride 'dry cleaning' fluid - and slowly turn the head drum, and wipe up and down it, over and over again ..making sure NOT to catch cotton wool in the sharp narrow gap between each of the (two) heads, which are each halfway round the head (at 180 degrees to each other). Wipe carefully, then examine the cotton bud and see if there are any brown stains on it ..if so, you've cleaned old muck off the head. Repeat with a new cotton bud until there are no more stains on it. Leave the head drum to dry for 10 minutes, playing gentle (half) heat from a hair-dryer on it, but don't melt the plastic camcorder - so that the fluid evaporates and doesn't stick any tape to the head! - then try importing again.
P.P.S: "..It seems that iMovie 6 will not allow me to play this video.." iMovie's tolerance for damaged digital video frames is far tighter than any camcorder's: a camcorder will often replace 'damaged' frames with detail from the undamaged frame before, so doesn't give a clear idea of how damaged the video data may be. If it won't import, it's damaged, possibly through head misalignment, or through a weak or dissipated signal. (Earlier versions, such as iMovie 2.1.2, were more tolerant of 'dodgy' video, and could import material which later versions, e.g; iMHD6, won't allow accept.)

I cannot connect my MacBook Air to a projector - It will not detect a 2nd monitor or display. I am using an Apple made Mini Display port to VGA adapter. As I read online I see that many other peple are having the same problem. Is this an Apple defect!!???? If so it just burst the bubble about how great macs are. I never had a problem with that on a PC. I hope I am wrong. What can you tell me?

    Hi There,
I have had the exact same issue but with a projector.
The issue lies with Mountian Lion 10.8.2.
I tried many a combination with no luck to get HDMI working.
Took my mac into the apple store and came to the conclusion it was the software, so I asked them to install 10.8 onto it (this is destructive so a backup is a must)
Bought my macbook home and voila, now displaying through my projector.
There is a small graphics update after 10.8.1 which seems to be the cause.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

    1)I have a GeForce4 MX 64MB VRAM card installed.
    2) the back is dual monitor capable, meaning it has 2 vga (CRT) ports, one on the right and an another adapted plug with a vga port on the end. ( i have no idea which type it was originaly.)

    THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED:
the adapter plug ripped off, reveal copper thread things and is now unusable. Although saddened, I was not worried because I don't use a dual monitor anyway and I switched to the other port. BUT THE VIDEO DOESNT WORK ON THAT PORT. I can't figure it out it just doesnt load any video?
the truth is i would rather have a dvi cable set up because i assume its better.
