Video on Firewire monitor produces dropouts in audio

Syncing a DV with Firewire produces severe and intermittent audio dropouts. If the movie is set to "Window" there is no problem.
Using a Canopus ADVC 110. Never had the problem until yesterday, it worked fine. Anyone have the same problem?

First thing you're missing is an accurate description of what exactly your issue is.

  • Audio monitoring follows video to Firewire Output

I'm a new FCS/Soundtrack Pro user but have been using ProTools LE and HD for some time.
When I select Video Out Firewire to view my video on an external monitor my audio monitoring follows and feeds the firewire device instead of my internal Mac outputs or my DIGI-002R.
I only want to view the vision on the monitor and keep my audio outputs playing through the DIGI002R. Is there any way of achieving this or am I missing something in the setup?

Using iMovie 7.1.4 on an iMac w/ Snow Leopard; HD video imported with a Firewire cable transfers fine, but audio arrives with major static; problem persists w/ different cameras & Firewire cables; source DV tape has no audfio static.

  • Simultaneous import of video via firewire and audio via in-line audio port

I have a converter that takes the S-video and audio input from my DVR then converts both to DV format, and then outputs via firewire. I hook the firewire up to my G5, open iMovieHD, and the application recognizes that as a camera and imports wonderfully.
Well, the audio comes through with a MAJOR buzz or hum. It's probably the converter, but the buzz/hum is not enjoyable.
So, I removed the audio from the converter, and the video converts wonderfully in iMovie without the audio. I have the audio coming in through my audio line-in.
I start to import my video, and iMovie starts recording the video. But I want to record the line-in audio at the same time. But when I switch to audio to turn on the input from the line-in, the video stops capturing.
When I start to capture audio first, then switch to capture video, then the audio stops capturing.
Is there any way that I can capture the video via firewire for one "track", and my line-in audio for the other "track", and have them play simultaneously in iMovie during capture??
Any help would be appreciated. thanks Adam

    hey there badkitty 42,
i don't think you can do that. it sounds like your issue is electrical. try turning the plug around on each piece of gear in the chain & listen for the buzz. if it's not heard you've found the cause of your ground loop. you can also pick up some of the 3-prong orange or grey electrical adapters from Lowe's or Home Depot to see if you can "lift the ground" to get rid of the buzz. i'd try one on the convertor 1st. one last thing, do you have any flourescent lights in use on the same circuit or in proximity to where you're doing your transcoding? these are notorious for inducing 60Hz hum in audio & video gear.
    good luck.

  • Can't output video to Firewire via Canopus..

    Hi all,
All of a sudden today, I am not able to output video via Firewire to my Canopus ADVC-110 with Final Cut Pro 6. I do however have video output when using programs like Logic, so the Canopus appears to be working fine. I checked the Audio/Video settings in FCP and have Firewire as Video playback, but no output is going to my monitor. What settings do I need to be looking at, in FCP. It's clearly something I did, and would like to correct it, so I can monitor video again. Please advise.
Also...one other note, I can't seem to playback video through Firewire in Soundtrack Pro as well. But Logic Pro plays vide through the firewire device just fine. Anyone have any insite on this? Thanx in advance....

Make sure the light is in the DV mode...press the big button a couple times to make sure. Also make sure you didn't switch to PAL mode from NTSC or something. AND...
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • Viewing video on external monitor

Using an external monitor. I am able to view the desktop on this monitor. However, I am unable to view my video on this monitor. What "Preference" settings do I need to enable me to view my video. Using Final Cut Pro 4.5. External monitor is JVC TM1400SU.

I have the first selection as "None" followed by the others
4 -Digital Cinema Desktop Preview selections. None
is selected. (Is that the default setting?) I don't
see a selection for my external monitor.

Wow -- slow down and read the posts.
Hook up your external monitor BEFORE starting FCP.
    Start FCP
View - External Video -- ALL FRAMES
View - Video Playback -- Apple Firewire (etc.) Use one of these based on where you are from and the size of your video.
DO NOT use desktop preview!! You'll be messed up and have NO way of figuring out how to get out of it.
    then...
View - Audio Playback -- Take your pick from the three... but make sure you've got all the correct buttons on your external source configured correctly.
Take your time and read the posts. You'll get it figured out.

  • Is there a way to remove screen flicker from recorded video of a monitor in iMovie?

I have video footage showing a large-screen display, with a person pointing to different items on the monitor. There's audio narration as well. My problem is that the monitor is flickering—mainly just brightness, there's no banding or anything like that. Is there any way to fix this in iMovie 11?

    Thanks Karsten & AppleMan1958.
These are good solutions, and it's good to know that I'm not missing some simple feature that's available in iMovie. Your solutions will fix most situations that encounter this problem. My specific situation leaves me a bit handcuffed, as the speaker is pointing to things on the screen. I know about the better alternatives for demonstrating software, but this is just a unique application/situation. I appreciate the help!

  • Sound but no video on tv monitor when capturing/viewing timeline

Can someone please suggest a solution to my problem? It seems that my settings have all of a sudden changed and I can no longer view the video on my tv monitor when capturing or when playing the clips in my timeline. I've already checked to see that I'm using "firewire" settings.
Any ideas what the settings should be?
    Thanks!

I'm gonna jump in here as I'm in the same boat....
I'm having trouble connecting my camera as a d to a converter for monitoring.
Firewire out from computer to DV Camera / camera analog rca out to monitor. Camera shows input from lens on monitor. FCP is set to - video playback>firewire>ntsc. External video> all frames.
What do I need to do to allow throughput from FCP - camera - monitor?
    Thanks for the tag-along....

  • Watch Video from One Mac, on Another (not Audio)

    Hi All,
Here's what I'd like to do:
Step 1: Set a movie to play on my Macbook Pro.
Step 2: Have the video play on my iMac, and the audio out of my Macbook Pro.
    The reasoning:
The new iMac doesn't have a firewire input for my Firewire 410, which connects to external speakers.
My Macbook Pro however connects seamlessly to the hardware and then to my speakers.
So, the need is to be able to watch the video on my iMac, but audio come out of my Macbook Pro...
An alternative to the above situation is the following:
Step 1: Set a movie to play on my iMac
Step 2: Have the audio come out of my Macbook Pro.
    Any solutions?
    Thanks,
    Sean

The Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire adaptor plugs into a Thunderbolt port on the iMac. The other end of the adaptor is a Firewire 800 port, just like the one on older Macs. You can use that just like any other FW 800 port.
If you wnat to use a Firewire 400 device with it, you will also need a Firewire 800 to Firewire 400 cable like this one, or you can use an 800 to 400 adaptor like this one & a Firewire 400 cable that you already have.
I use the Apple adaptor & an 800 to 400 adaptor with FW 400 cables I already have to attach Firewire 400 external hard drives to my 2012 iMac. That works quite well. You could do something similar with your M-Audio box, although as I mentioned earlier, the M-Audio drivers may not work well with Mountian Lion.

  • When will LT have "View ext. video through Firewire"?

Just installed the FCS upgrade and was dissapointed the I can't yet see using firewire to the monitor in LiveType. I do see that Soundtrack Pro has this now, which delights me but I would think that being text and all, that we would see this in LT as well. We need this!

(I'm answering in the off chance that you're asking the question seriously, David...)
Provided you have a video clip in your multitrack project, Soundtrack Pro will feed that video (via FireWire or PCI Capture Card) to an external monitor. (This needs to be setup in your Preferences first, of course). STP even uses the same shortcut as FCP to toggle External Video On/Off - Command-F12.
As for the question posted originally, LiveType does not have external monitoring because it works with Animation codec files - files which are way too beefy to play both on your computer monitor and send externally unless there is some type of GPU (or other hardware) acceleration, like there is with Motion. (and, of course, there is no hardware acceleration for LiveType currently)
Though I agree, it would be awesome to have external monitoring for LiveType.

  • Video portion of podcasts not playing only audio

I recently purchased an Apple tv and have not had issues until recently. Whenever I either stream or download a video podcast through the device only the audio portion plays. I have tried through itunes on both my pc ans iphone and they work just fine there. I have searched the forums and am not seeing any resulutions for this particular issue. Any help would be appreciated.

no sorry but they are coming from Apple through itunes
apple don't produce the podcasts though.
it is up the person making the podcast what format it is produced in.
appletv has a small set of supported formats, so it is not uncommon for podcasts to be not compatible. this has nothing to do with apple. just because they play in itunes or iphone does not mean they will work on appletv.
anyone can submit a podcast to the itunes store.

  • Can't resize video in Sequence monitor window anymore ???

OK Help... I have been working on a project in CS4 and the project settings are HD 1080. I have been able to bring in other SD clips and simply "click" on the video in the monitor window and a box comes up around the video and I can resize it and then render and it looks acceptable. This works if I want to shrink it and have a black border also. Now the ability to do this is GONE ! Same computer - same everything. I click and there is no box or ability to re-size. Only thing I ever did was load up another project at one time in standard DV - NTSC and encoded with Encore.  Whats Wrong

Glad that you found it. You can also do the same thing with the Bounding Box, if you open the Effects Control Panel, and then click on the name Motion in the Effects list there, and you'll get a Bounding Box in the Program Panel. Personally, I like the numerical method, but some like the Bounding Box.
    Good luck,
