Video playback--mba 2010 w/mountain lion

Has anyone noticed terrible video playback on 13" 4Gb mba 2010 with the mountain lion upgrade? Youtube using flash (11.4.402.265) at 1080p is unwatchable and 720p is barely watchable at full screen. Connecting to a larger monitor is much worse. I could do all 3 when I had Lion. I'm not running any other applications at the time and used the app Free Memory to clear the RAM cache before playing a video. I've tried firefox, chrome, and safari (which I prefer), and they all had similarly poor results. I previously used html5 on lion, but those gave me choppy results and found flash to be better. Any suggestions?

I tried unchecking "enable hardware acceleration", but the results were similarly poor in safari 6 and chrome. However, while using safari 6 on youtube, I opted for the trial html5 setting and it now plays 1080p smoothly at full screen. Hopefully, this might helps others struggling with the mba 2010 processor.

It is stated that mirroring requires recent hardware (2011 or later)

  • My MacBook Pro (2010) running Mountain Lion is getting slower and slower. How do I fix the orphan files?

My 2010 Macbook pro is running slower and slower. I went to the Genius Bar about eight months ago, and they botted up from the disk, and let it go through and find what  its process to find and fix what I think were "orphan" files. I cannot remember what they did, but when they did it, the speed on my Macbook picked up considerably.
I have since upgraded to Mountain Lion, but these problems do not seem related to that. My 500 GB HDD is about 80% full.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Extremely sluggish MBP (mid 2010) on Mountain Lion

    Hello All,
I have a mid-2010 13" MBP (2.4 GHz C2D, 4GB RAM) which runs extremely sluggish on the Mountain Lion. I do not have Windows installed on my Mac. Most of the usage is for browsing, videos and MS-Office. Booting up from sleep takes much longer than earlier; restarting the mac takes even longer The Mac was much faster with the last OSX version: Snow Leopard. I am not even considering to OSX Mavericks for the fear of slowing down the system further.
Should I downgrade to Snow Leopard? I do not see too many features that I will be missing out on.
Or should I upgrade the RAM to 8GB? This is less preferable cos I'm unlikely to sell my existing 4GB RAM and will have to spend ~$100 on additional RAM.
Or is there any other option?
Any help in this regard is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Back up all data in target disk mode. The internal drive has malfunctioned, or you have some other hardware fault. I suggest you have the machine tested by a service provider, but if you want to continue trusting it, you can reinstall OS X by booting the working Mac into Recovery and installing onto the non-working Mac, which is still in target mode. The results will depend on what caused the failure.

  • Video "Dropouts" with FCS and Mountain Lion

I would like to see if anyone else is having this problem and maybe save some folks from the experience.
    I have two macs.
    #1- Imac, 2.93, core 2 duo, 4g ram, 24".
    #2-Macbook Pro, 17", 2.53, 4g
    4t g-raids
Clean Install done on Imac of Mountain Lion.  Reloaded fcs.
Did NOT touch macbook.  Still running Snow Leopard.
Working on large video job...1080 60i, avchd, panny cam.
Went to transfer footage using all usual settings.
Video on imac looked like "old school" video drop outs.  As you can imagine, it was a long night to figure this out.
Erased footage and hooked up my g-raids to the Macbook.  Looked fine.
Took hard drives back to imac, tried transfer again.  Stuttering and drop outs continued.
Back to Macbook with Snow Leopard, no problems.  My guy is editing job right now on Macbook.
I am in the middle of a clean install of Snow Leopard on the imac.  I'm gonna have to send the "boys" out to get my $20 bucks back from Apple.
Thought I'd post it in case someone sees same thing and thinks they are crazy.
Mountain lion could not capture footage without drops.  Snow Leopard (my trusty os) did it all.
Shocked I say, Apple....Shocked.  (Not really, been down this road before) Never believe what they say.  Don't upgrade unless forced by gunpoint.

  • Dashboard widget with streaming video breaks after upgrade to Mountain Lion

Hi.  I recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.  Under SL, I had an OS X widget that was a web clipping of a streaming mpeg image being produced by a Linksys/Cisco WVC54GCA web camera.  When I brought up the dashboard, the OS would start streaming the data from the mpeg filename, which looks like "hostname.com/img/video.mjpeg".
After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I noted that the widget never fully loads, indefinitely displaying a "Loading Clip..." mesasge.  After deleting and re-adding, I can still get as far as adding the web clipping to the dashboard at the right dimensions, but there's no content.
Unfortunately the camera unit doesn't provide for the display of HTTP access logs, so I can't see if there's an issue there, but my understanding is that if I can display the image in a Safari browser, it should work just fine in Dashboard too.  (I did make sure that, where needed, the username/password for accessing the video are included in the URL.)
I did sniff the network traffic between my system and the camera host, and show that video traffic starts flowing between the two as soon as the widget is brought up.  So, it's almost like the widget doesn't know when to stop "loading" and start "displaying," perhaps because the HTTP request is never truly "done."
Can anyone speculate if something may have changed in Mountain Lion affecting the ability of web clipping widgets to display streaming video?
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi James
I have exactly the same problem with the same "Loading clip" then blank.  I have been trying a lot of stuff to get this working, but haven't had the chance of sniffing the network traffic as you have done.  By reading what you said about the traffic seems to be flowing without the picure being displayed makes me even more puzzled by this.  I never had a streaming video while  I were using Snow Leopard, but I had a still-image, as I also do now in Mountain Lion.  I recently began to research for a way to display the video.cgi MIME image that my camera produces, and I've also concluded that this should be an easy task for the dashboard web clip function; the video does display in safari after all.
I suspect that our cameras uses the same built in webserver solution written by a "Steven Wu".  Cheap webcameras frequently uses his script with MJPEG (stream of JPEG pictures) to avoid the expensive licenses of using other video codecs.
I read this a bit down at this site: http://channel9.msdn.com/coding4fun/articles/Everyone-Loves-Babies-Webcams-and-M otion-Detection
Have you come any closer in your research?
I have started to think that maybe I have to write a dashboard widget on my own to accomplish this.

  • Best practice to use Time capsule for back-up of 3 different products (MBP 15 OSX lion, MBP 13 OSX lion and MBA 13 OSX mountain lion)?. Only the MBP15 is back-up regularly.

When I want to save data of the MBA13 on mountain lion (wireless) with time capsule, hois there any best practice to perform?
After that, assuming that data are back-up, can we easily differentiate data in time capsule belonging to MBP15/13 and MBA13?

Unfortunately, Apple left off the Ethernet port....the most important port in networking....on the MBA, so your first backup of the entire Mac will need to be done using wireless.
That may take a day or two unless your MBA has a Thunderbolt port on it in which case you could add a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter and connect the MBA to the Time Capsule for the first backup using an Ethernet cable.  It will probably only take 3-4 hours or less doing it this way.
Once you have the first complete backup done, other subsequent backups can be done using wireless since they will ony take a few minutes, on average.
Both Macs will backup to the Time Capsule using Time Machine automatically. Backups will be kept completely separate, so one Mac will normally only be able to "see" its own backups.

  • Airplay On 2011 MBP to ATV2 sends video but no audio using mountain lion

    Hey peeps,
Watching a video on VLC and using airplay on mountain lion I have mirrored it to my TV and that its working fine except the audio is still coming out of MBP not the TV. I click on system preferences > Sound and it says the apple TV is selected as my device for sound output but the sound is only coming out of my speakers on the MBP.
Any ideas because this is driving me crazy, I was so looking forward to mirroring films rather then converting them for itunes.
    Cheers in advance

I have just got the same problem today when I changed the airplay mirror for a while. I dind't find anything about on the internet so i tried by myself and it worked just fine. The solution is very simple:
    1 - Go to VLC
2 - On option of VLC go to Audio, than audio devices
    3 - Change to airplay

  • MBA crashes after Mountain Lion upgrade

I was finally able to convince my friend that he needed to upgrade his Snow Leopard OS to Mountain Lion on his MacBook Air (purchased in the last two years) because he was running into various problems.  I've been using ML on my MBP with few problems since its first release.  To my chagrin, his machine is now crashing daily.  Not just a kernel panic, but full "screen goes black" crash.  We went through the normal diagnostics, including basic stuff like permission repairs, resetting PRAM, iCloud settings in Mail, etc. Problem persists.  He's planning on going to a Genius bar but I'm hoping someone here might be able to help in the meantime.

I have developer's tool that can provide that but he's not authorized to use it.  Is there a hidden utility or location where crash reports are stored?

  • Which HD video file formats work with Mountain Lion?

I use Final Cut Pro v. 7.0.3 and want to work with HD video. Have tried to open some HD video files and have not been able to. Are there specific HD file types that Can be used with this older system?

I've googled the camera for info and I think it should work in FCP7.0.3
Connect it to your Mac with the USB cable and switch it on.
In the FCP menu select File>Log and Transfer
A window will open and all the clips in your camera should start to appear.
Select the ones you want and click the pause symbol on the lower, centre part of the window to start the capture.

  • Transfer digital video/Hi8 tapes to iMac mountain lion.

Hi, I have iMac mid 2007 running OS X10.8 a Sony DV8/Hi8 video camcorder. Want to transfer tapes to dvd. Which version of iMovie would I need for compatibility with both machines. If not possible, can someone recommend a low cost alternative.

The best app to record your display is clearly QuickTime Player, preinstalled with OS X. Just open this app, go to File menu (on the menu bar) > New Movie Recording.
Apart from that, there are third-party applications that have got more features as the ability to modify the recorded video with that app, without having to export it to another application. I recommend Screenflow > http://www.telestream.net/screenflow/overview.htm
Another option is to use "Photo Booth", preinstalled on OS X

  • MacBook Pro 13 2010 running Mountain Lion: will not boot and shows a folder with a flashing question mark. Will not start in 'safe mode' i.e holding shift on start up - nor can I call up any utilities with the OSX shortcuts. Any thoughts?

Following an automatic update, the machine wouldn't boot. Screen came on (shows white) - then either showed a 'No-Entry' Sign and a spinning cog, or a folder with a qusetion mark. I  tried to start the machine in different modes ( eg. holding shift after the tone ) but nothing worked. after leaving the machine alone for 1 hour. It worked perfectly again. I did a 'verify disk' check which found no problems. 2 hours later it then froze ( In - Photoshop). Could not force quit, so shut down, and have not been able to boot again since (white lit screen - flashing folder with question mark) . I have also taken the hard drive out and checked the connections which seem fine. Any suggestions? - Is the Hard Drive dead. : other info : It was also running parallels 8, with Windows 7. at the time of the update....

This article may help: A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac.

  • Restoring my Mavericks OS Macbook Pro (mid 2010) to Mountain Lion factory settings, will I be able to upgrade back up to Mavericks?

I have a Macbook Pro that has become bloated and really slow, so I backed up everyting to an external hard drive and want to restore my Macbook to factory settings. I have my orignal Snow Lepord install disk, but if I begin this process, will I be able to upgrade through SL --> ML --> Mavericks? Can I jump from SL to Mavericks? I downloaded both ML and Mavericks through iCloud on the App Store.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Instead of doing what you want, simply use the Recovery partition your Mac has got in order to reinstall OS X Mavericks.
Hold Command and R keys while your Mac is starting up to start up into OS X Recovery, and open Disk Utility. Then, select your OS X volume (normally labelled as "Macintosh HD") in the Disk Utility sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase it. Finally, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X. You will get OS X 10.9.1.
By doing this, you will not have to reinstall Snow Leopard and go back to Mavericks
