Video playback on external monitor

I have a problem with video playing on my external monitor.
I have been editing a 30 second commercial with several split screens and quad screens. After my last render, the video no longer plays on the external monitor. A frame plays, and then it freezes. I went thru the "Stock Answers" section and played with the RT settings and the memory/cache settings. Nothing seemed to make a difference. I also opened some older projects and they will not play thru the external monitor either. Finally, another note that may offer some clues is that when you print to tape it sometimes plays perfectly and other times it does not.
Any help provided will be greatly appreciated!
Jeremy

#8 External Monitor Viewing.
Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • Slow Video playback on external monitor

I'm having a problem with video on an external monitor drifting out of sync. The video plays back slow on the monitor but the sound come through fine and the video is playing at a normal speed in FCP. This is only happening with video from FCP, I can play a clip in Color and there's no drift. I've opened the project on another mac and there's no problem. Also, if I set the external video play back to 10 bit the drift is worse than if it is set to 8 bit, as in a 15 sec clip takes 19 secs to play back on the external monitor at 10 bit and 18 secs in 8 bit (not exact times). I've reinstalled AJA LHe control panel and drivers, but seeing as this isn't happening in Color it seems like it must be a FCP issue. I've trashed the FCP prefs (along with AJA and quicktime), what could this be?!?

what video capture card are you using??
have you set render all to FULL, and have you rendered??

  • DV NTSC Video Playback on external monitor

I can't get my DV NTSC sequence to play on my external monitor. I know I have the computer/Canopus/external monitor connected correctly b/c I can playback some of my old Final Cut Express sequences on the external monitor. I used that as a test to make sure everything was connected properly. Since I can rule that out, I must be missing a setting in FCP somewhere?
Sequence Settings are NTSC-DV; Compressor DV/DVCPro-NTSC
View>Video Playback is set to Apple Firewire NTSC
Can anyone lead me in the right direction? Thanks.

    Hi -
Go to the menu VIew > Video Playback and select Apple Firewire (720x480):

Then go to the menu View > External Video and select All Frames:
If you don't see an image, then go to the menu View > External Video > Refresh A/V Devices, then reselect All frames.
    Hope this helps.

  • Fullscreen video playback on external monitor (overlay problem?)

I want to watch videopodcasts via iTunes fullscreen on my external Monitor/TV. It works fine with Quicktime and WindowsMediaPlayer but iTunes doesn't play my Videos in Fullscreen on my external Monitor.
I had the idea it is because the overlay mode isn't siwtched on but I can't find where to setup the display mode of video playback in iTunes.
    Can anybody help me?
    Bernd.

    oh, no...
i thouhght the iTunes Videoplayback would rely on Quicktime and thus it would be possible.
    isn't there any other possibilty?

  • No video playback on external monitor

I'm using a open-source radeon supported card with an external monitor on my laptop.  When I run a merged framebuffer setup I can see video playback on both screens fine but I just want to use the external.  However, if I don't use mergedfb I only see a black window during video playback.
I'm sure I have had it working in the past, though on a diff monitor but I am certain that if mergedfb playback AND TV-out playback then this must be doable and I am doing something dumb!
My xorg.conf is here, I've tried quite a lot of things but I am stumped atm.

OK, I thought the solution was:
    Option "OverlayOnCRTC2" "on"
But apparently that is deprecated and I need to use:
    xvattr -a XV_SWITCHCRT -v 1
How and when would you guys run this command?

  • Video playback on external monitor working. Only works when Print to Video

I'm having a problem. I'm using FCP 5. When editing, my video playback is not showing up on my external monitor (Sharp MiniDV camcorder). It does however show up on the external monitor when I "Print to Video." This is the first time using FCP 5. I never had this problem with previous versions of FCP. Can anyone tell me whats going on? Thanks

  • Video playback on external monitor only producing still frame

I am trying to use a HD TV as a playback device as managed to get it to work, however it has now stopped working and only produces a still frame. When I hit play it will play fine in the timeline but display only a still frame on the second monitor. I have made sure that the settings under video playback are set to full screen and that mirroring is turned off.
Even when I play back on Main the image on the main monitor only displays a still frame until the second monitor is unplugged.
    Am I missing something?

    How is the TV connected?
If via firewire and an analog/DV converter, are you feeding the HDTV something other than a DV signal? If so, it won't work.

  • No playback to external monitor Premiere CC

    Hello all ~
Mid-job (and of course now that I need to color correct), PP CC has stopped exporting video to my external monitor.  I have tried trashing prefs (holding Shift+Opt at start-up) and it doesn't do the trick.  In looking around, I've noticed people having this problem when using some BlackMagic cards, but my monitor is plugged directly into the Thunderbolt connector of my MacBook Pro. I've enclosed my Playback settings.
Oddly enough, when I fire up my old copy of PP CS6 it plays back to my external monitor just fine.
I've had had enough late-night edits that I may have inadvertently initiated some keystroke that changed a setting, but I can't think of what that would be or why a Preference Trash wouldn't reset it.   Any help greatly appreciated.  Thanks much.

Well, after much poking and prodding I found out what happened and how to fix it.  If you look at the picture below, you can see that there is a row of razor-thin pixels pushing into my external monitor.  So basically what happened was that I resized the window and thought that I had dragged it completely onto my main monitor, but my Program Monitor and Timeline were still ever-so-slightly overlapping onto my external monitor.  When I moved them fully onto my main monitor, the video on my external monitor reappeared.
HOWEVER ( ! ), this does beg the question of why this problem remained as I did reset my editing workspace, I did trash preferences and I did do a complete uninstall/reinstall of PP CC... and still had the same problem.  Shouldn't  any one of those processes have put things back to where they were supposed to be? Where are these residual settings being stored, and how can you get rid of them if even a complete reinstall won't do the trick?
Would have saved a lot of time if they had worked as advertised.  Happy to be up and running (and color correcting) though and hope this can help others who might be having the same problem.

  • No Video PB on External Monitor/DV unit with FCP PlayBack

    Hello.
I just bought this Sony DVCAM unit today and I am having no luck with view External video from FCP. I have it connected with FW and had no problem with capture in FCP. I tried all settings on FCP external control and checked the Sony variables also. The Deck is a DSR-1500 record/PB DVCam unit from Sony. I never had problems with my DV Camera. I would appreciate some insight on this. I have FCP 4.5 and I have a small Video monitor connected to the Sony Video Monitor. I would rather view NTSC than computer monitor visuals. Thanks

Does the deck have an input switch? If so, set it for DV. I have the DSR-11 and it has DV/S-Video/Composite.

  • CS5 Playback Settings grayed out and no longer can set playback on external monitor.

I like to view my projects while editing on an external monitor but the Playback Settings are grayed out. I've done all my prior projects with external monitor display enabled with no problems and can go back to a prior projects completed and view them using an external playback monitor.  For some reason, the Playback Settings on my latest project are grayed out and I'm not able to set Desktop Video Display During Playback.
The last project worked on was about 3 months ago. Last week, I started working on two new projects and noticed that I wasn't able to set playback to my external monitor. All my devices are hooked up and I can review older projects on the external monitor but can't set two new projects to use display on the external monitor.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Problem solved. My fault.
The Sequence Preset Settings selected must support the device the external monitor is connected to. In my case, IEEE 1394 firewire. I corrected the new project to the correct Sequence Settings and can now view playback on the external monitor.

"The Desktop Video 9.7.5 software update allows users to take advantage of many new features in the Adobe Creative Cloud desktop applications such as powerful new editing timelines and shortcuts and audio mixing with Adobe Premiere Pro® CC and new creative and visual effects tools with Adobe After Effects® CC."
So everything should be covered on that front. And as I listed, I was getting playback out of AE CC, so I feel it is solely an issue in Premiere. That was worth checking out though since CC is so new. Thanks for replying.

  • Video tearing on external monitor

I'm trying to get video playback on an external monitor which is connected via HDMI.  It all works but the vsync signal seems to be coming from the internal monitor (laptop computer).
Is there any simple solution to this?  The two monitors have the same refresh rate, but that seems to just make the tearing appear as a line the slowly moves up the screen.  Is it possible to tell the application (totem in this example) which monitor to take the vsync signal from?
For what it's worth, I'm using intel graphics and the most of the videos I'm watching is being decoded via vaapi in totem (gstreamer).

*Everyone* will have this issue, regardless of hardware or driver. It's not possible to sync to two displays unless their timings are exactly the same. And by that I don't mean just resolution and refresh rate, I mean all timings.
nvidia-settings allows you to choose which display video should be synced to. The other display (unless it's completely identical) will have tearing. No way around it. I think the Catalyst Control Center has such a setting too, I can't remember, all I remember is my friend uses Catalyst and we were playing around a bit trying to remove tearing on his TV. No idea if open source drivers provide such a setting.

  • Jerky playback on external monitor

I'm getting playback that freezes and hangs up briefly on an external monitor. The video (from Final Cut timeline) is also playing on the preview monitor of my MBP (bought just before current version). Is there a way to stop the playback on the MBP? Is that what's causing the playback problem?
    Thanks for any help.

The sequence was rendered and everything is on an external drive (spinning at 7200). By sequence settings do you mean my system settings? For playback back it's RT: unlimited, Video Quality: dynamic, Frame Rate: full, Pulldown Pattern: 2:3:2:3, and Gamma Correction: Accurate. The footage was shot at 24p on a DVX100a. Could my pulldown be wrong?

  • Playback on external monitor

    Hello!
I recently purchased a new dell 22 inch monitor to accompany my 20 inch alum imac. (and to replace a crappy old dell monitor).
Previously i used that monitor for fullscreen playback of my HDV video out of Final Cut Pro (FCS2). I just upgraded to snow leopard.
So i hook up the new monitor (VGA until the DVI adapter comes in).. looks very nice. Go into FCP and change it to play on the external monitor just like before.
But now when i try to play, it only shows the frame i started playback at (audio is fine) and then updates the frame when i stop playback. The picture looks amazing.. but i kind of need the realtime playback! On the old monitor it played back fine. (i have it set to "show all frames"
Specs. Mac OS X 10.6 SL. 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo w/ 4gb ram. Video is stored on FW 800 drive with 500gb. FCS 2.
If you need anymore info please let me know!

Try using Final Cut Pro Rescue to delete some preferences.
Can you test it using full screen with another format besides HDV to see if it works?

  • Poor streaming playback on external monitor

    Hi guys,
I never thought I would post here but the problem has gotten too annoying to ignore anymore. I have a 2008 Macbook with 4gb ram, 2.4ghz core 2 duo processor and os x 10.6.8.
I am experiencing poor playback where the video stutters/lags/skips. Usually the audio is out of sync with the video and the video looks as though it accelerates and decelerates. This happens on the macbook screen but also is especially pronounced when using an external monitor. I have the problem on youtube and netflix and am running the latest flash/silverlight plugins on firefox.
I didn't seem to have this problem before so am wondering if something may have changed. It's so annoying I am tempted to buy a new macbook but I am sure there is some kind of fix somewhere? I have a 60mbps internet connnection so it's not that, and if I play a DVD or .mpeg file, the playback is flawless.
    Any ideas?

In FCP, go to view>refresh A/V devices
    Then go View>External Video>all frames.

  • IMovie playback on external monitor via FireWire?

this seems like a pretty obvious question, but is it possible to play back an iMovie timeline on an external monitor/TV? i'm connecting my Titanium laptop to a Sony DV camera via FireWire, then directly from the camera to my TV via mini-jack/RCA cable. this works fine in Final Cut Pro, but i can't seem to get my iMovie to show up on the TV. how do you get iMovie to playback output via FireWire?
    thanks.

In iMovie>Preferences>Playback do you have "Play DV project video through to DV camera" checked?
For your information: Checking that checkbox sends the audio to the DV camera INSTEAD of to the Mac's speakers, so if you disconnect the camera, you will have no audio.
