Video playback speed in After Effects

After importing QuickTime video into After Effects it plays back at about half (or even slower) the initial frame rate (13 fps or so instead of 29.97 fps). Also in the top right corner of the workspace (Info Panel) I'm getting a message that "...Layer 1 Retrieving Frame".
Could you, please, give me an advise how to return video playback to normal speed?
           Thank you.

Sure, After Effects isn't a movie player. But it is possible to edit source footage in AE in order to make a coherent whole out of it, isn't it?
Technically possible, but not an ideal workflow. I can also cut through my filet mignon with a spoon, but I can do it a lot faster and with much less frustration if I use my steak knife.
I edit in Premiere and then use the Import>Adobe Premiere Pro Project option in After Effects to bring my edit into AE.

  • Slowing the Particle Speed in After Effects Particle World?

Hi folks, does anyone know if there is a way to slow down the line particle speed in after effects?
I've already tried the Velocity and Gravity but these affect the shape and projectory of the particles, I'd like to just slow down the speed?
    Thanks

There are other particle systems that offer more control if you really need it. Expensive.
Build your main comp at a higher frame rate, render the movie, and bring it back into a 30fps comp. You can precompose and nest but the movie is generally easier to manage in your head. The highest frame rate I can use on my AE is 99fps. A more current version may offer higher frame rates.

  • Slow/unresponsive video playback, media pending, after CC'14 October update

Encountering a strange issue after the October update. It's a project carried over from the previous CC'14 version, nothing crazy, about an 18 minute timeline of video/.mov clips straight off a JVC GY-HM600U with simple RGB curves/masks on some clips, some Prores422 clips of graphics exported out of After Effects, a couple nested sequences featuring simple text w/ cross dissolves, and a lower 3rd Quicktime with RGB+Alpha. There are some linked AE comps in the project but not in the sequence. Ran fine before update. Here's my system, obviously no CUDA so Mercury Playback is software only:
Upon opening the project everything is fine, playback is smooth, scrubbing from beginning to end no problem. After a period of time, 10-15 minutes? Suddenly video playback hangs up, with audio continuing to play after . Opening a clip in the Source window displays the Media Pending thumbnail, after 15 seconds it seems to find the media but again it's only a still frame with video hanging up. Then audio seems to hang up and I can't do anything. I can still manipulate the UI but scrubbing through the timeline is completely unresponsive, pressing play does nothing.
Quitting the program seems to freeze it, the window closes but it stays lit up in my dock and shows Application Not Responding, causing me to force quit.
A system reboot yesterday seemed to clear the issue up for the remainder of the work day but it's back today. Not sure where the issue is coming from, but seems like some kind of memory leak or something similar since it seems to be a gradual degradation in performance. I'll have to roll back to a previous version to finish up this project until things are fixed.

    Hello,
Many thanks for your very long reply and your interest in my problems.
I shall try to answer you :
    - 1) OS :  Windows 7 64 bits Pro SP1, french,
                     Version : 6.1.7601.18247 (Win7RTM)
                     Framework.NET : 4.0.30319.18408 built by : FX451RTMGREL)
                     DirectX : 11.0,
                     OpenGL : 6.1.7600.16385 (Win7_rtm.090713-1255).
    - 2) Yes the media pending goes away but after a couple of minutes (one
year ago I was using PP CS6 and Encore CS6, I never had this problem
    even with very long files),
    - 3) Yes my GPU driver is updated (Nvidia GeForce 332.21 dated 12/19/2014).
I never had thiese problems with PP CS6 + Encore CS6 and my projects
built with these PP ans Encore version were with the same structure and
length (in PP CS6 : sequences up to 45 minutes, in Encore CS6 chapters
    up to the same time).
The difference between are in my hardware :
    - the RAM was upgraded from 12 GB to 24 GB,
    - the CPU was overclocked from 3,2 GHz (default) to 3,88 GHz).
    - 4) I shall try up to the disk burn to check if the problem is just due
    to display of "animated buttons".
I hope my answer will be usefull for you.

  • Trimming Video Saves Memory in After Effects CS4?

I'm working on this project, and I've got a bunch of large video files.  If I trim the video within the composition, does that save me memory  giving me longer RAM preview or speed things up?? Or would you suggest trimming it before importing it within the  composition. I'm worried if I trim the video before importing it, maybe  using VirtualDub or AfterEffects itself, I would lose the quality?
The clip was recorded using Fraps in 'full screen' mode, and I'll be  outputting it using After Effects to 1280x720 pixels. I need  to retain the quality so people can view it later in Youtube in HD.  It's a 6-min composition.
The problem is that the files are really large, a 2min30 sec footage  being around 3GB, and I'm not getting RAM preview longer than maybe 5-6  seconds now due to the number of files in the composition (most of them  will be used). I even turned on the multi-processor option and increased paging file memory. I was even using a 4 gig flash drive with Windows ReadyBoost.
    Composition Settings:
Preset: HDV/HDTV 720 29.97 (is this the correct setting if I want to post it up in Youtube HD?)
    Durating: 6 mins
PC: I got 4GB RAM on my system.
Total size of files: Around 20GB, 190 files.
There's one more issue, I actually need to crop the bottom/top part of the clips. For now, I've scaled the clips to exclude the top/bottom parts I don't need, but I was wondering if I should've cropped before importing them to the project. That would probably give me longer RAM preview, but then if I cropped the dimensions those clips beforehand would they lose quality? (Once again, done using AE4 or VirtualDub)
    Any help is appreciated

    >  If I trim the video within the composition, does that save me memory  giving me longer RAM preview or speed things up?
What, exactly do you mean by "trim"? Are you referring to shortening the duration of the video in the source file? That has nothing to do with RAM preview.
    > I'm not getting RAM preview longer than maybe 5-6  seconds now due to the number of files in the composition (most of them  will be used).
The number of files used as source for a composition aren't relevant to RAM preview length, either.
    > I even turned on the multi-processor option...
    Don't do that.
You only have 4GB of RAM. That's not enough for using the Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing feature.
Also, by using that feature, you dedicate RAM to the background rendering processes, which subtracts RAM from what's available for RAM preview duration.
You have very little RAM, so your RAM preview durations aren't going to be great. See this FAQ entry for some tips on mitigating this:

  • What program was used to make this video?  Is it After Effects?

I thought that this clip was funny: http://www.clipaday.com/videos/mccain-drums.
I want to make something similar for my brother, but I have no idea which program was used to make this.
I have the full Adobe CS3 Suite on my computer, including After Effects. I use Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator regularly for my job.
I want to try to monkey around with the video software at an amateur level. But before I buy any tutorials, I need to know what program to buy the tutorial for!!
    Thanks for any responses.

While the clip may not necessarily have been done in AE, you can achieve
these results. Careful masking along with good keyframing of the
movement properties will do it. There are other ways, but while this
might not be the fastest, would be the simplest and would provide a good
learning experience for someone starting out.

  • Changing video playback speeds

I'm trying to watch videos for class on Blackboard. Quicktime is not supported. I use Real Player. I would like to be able to use quicktime. I also would like to be able to speed up and slow down the lecture. I have heard of a program called Enounce, but it is only available for windows. Is there a similar program to use with Mac OS???

Are you able to alter playback speeds, to speed up and slow down while watching a video. What I mean is, if I'm relistening to a lecture, can I speed up the lecturer and slow him back to regular talk when it is an important portion to the lecture. I noted a product called Enounce (enounce.com). It is available for windows based computers only. Please look at this and tell me if there are settings or options in Quicktime or anyother video player that you can preform these same functions. I'm relatively new to Mac. I love the computer, but am still learning the differences from PC. Thanks again.

  • Why is video playback continually stuttering after the Mountain Lion 10.8.2 update?

Since updating to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 video playback in iTunes and QuickTime is unwatchable. The video stutters constantly then plays catch up to the sound. I'm running a 2011 Mac Mini i5 2.3 GHz and 8 Gb of RAM. Anyone know how to roll back the update to a working version of Mountain Lion?

Hello, you'd have to reinstall 10.8.0 or 10.8.1, but...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Video playback speeds up automatically?

    Hi all,
I have a number of short cartoons for my cousins on my iPod nano (7th gen), but the longest video is giving me some trouble. It starts off fine, but about 10 minutes in, it starts to play as if it was on fast forward. Is there some kind of length limit to the video playback for the nano? This particular file is 26 minutes long, while all the other files that play normally are under 8 minutes in length. Does anyone have any ideas where I can start to troubleshoot?
    Thanks!

    Della:
Not a clue about the problem, sorry, but can "imagine" a workaround just to fool the problem.
You must have a PLAY button that connect to that first scene (first chapter in the track, I guess). If you connect that button to the second chapter (just to try) that plays fine or again behaves as it was first?
If that way plays fine, you can add a "false" first scene (i.e. one second of black exported from FCP) and connect the PLAY button to the real first (now second in the track) chapter.
I told you, it's just a workaround to have in hand in case your dead line gets close!!

  • Playback speed doubles after render

Hey everyone, have this really weird issue. I have some clips I filmed at a conference recently. I put them into the time line and it gives me the spiel about changing the sequence to match the clip. I say yes. The clip plays back fine, until I render it, say with an effect or a title etc, then the clips doubles in speed.
The clips where all recorded through my Black Magic Card into FCP using ProRes.
Things I have tried to fix it with.
I have tried re-compressing the video files.
I have tried changing the render settings
I have tried exporting the video as a self contained video and also just straight from FCP to Compressor
But all with the same results. The file details look fine, but for some reason the play back doubles in speed.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? Cheers.

Actually just to add to that. I opened the original file in Quicktime 7 and it plays at double the speed too. I looked at the movie inspector and it says the frame rate is 25fps, but when I play it, the playback frame rate is 50?? How on earth do I fix that?

  • Altering video playback speed using stage.framerate

    Hi All,
I'm trying to programatically change the speed at which an
flv file plays, eg. so I can do slow-motion, or fast-motion video.
From what I have read, I think I should be using
stage.framerate = x, but I cannot get this to work.
I think I might be missing something very obvious (I am new
to flex / flash) so please feel free to test the obvious.
I have included below the flashlog output, and attached the
    single .as file.
The behavior that I would expect (and that I want) from this
is for the video to play at ~4x speed.
The observed behavior is that it plays at normal speed.
    I have also tried 'vid.stage.framerate = 100'
    What am I doing wrong?
    thanks,
    tom saffell
    flashlog output
    ===========
    24
    100
    0
Error #2095: flash.net.NetStream was unable to invoke
    callback onMetaData.

    Thanks again Luigi.
I got it to work !
I'm using flex builder, not Flash, so I had to embed the
    video another way.
I converted the flv to an SWF using SUPER/ ffmpeg, then used
the code below to load the swf. (credit to shadowmint)
It works ! Beware, this only works with *no sound* in the
swf. The first time i did it with sound the framerate could not be
    altered.
Still, this all feels a little hacky to me, so one more
    question:
    4. In your research, did you investigate how easily all this
    can be done in Silverlight?
(im not yet married to the flash solution, even though the
    penetration is better..)
    cheers

  • How to create a hotspot on a video or image in After Effects?

Hello, I'd like to create a hotspot on my video. During this video, I have a icon popup and I'd like it (when clicked) to go to a website.
    Thanks

YouTube offer authoring tools in the video manager. Dunno about Facebook since I'm not there. Normal web pages require a suitable video player like jwPlayer to do any of this. Either way, your problem cannot be resolved in AE or any other video app. You have considerable gaps in your knowledge about web techniques and need to read up on that.

  • Video playback suddenly black after ATI video driver update?

Totally bizarre - I updated to the latest drivers using RadarSync.  Now videos from my flip (mpeg4) all play back as all black, unless I move the "Display Properties/Settings/Advanced/Troubleshoot/Hardware acceleration" slider to "Disable all DirectDraw and Direct3d" or lower.
Anyone else encountered this issue where videos start playing as all black?  It seems to be independent of the decoder (xvid or ffmpeg) or video player (Microsoft Video player, VLC) application that I use.
    Thinkpad T42p WinXP SP3
ATI  MOBILITY FIRE GL T2/T2e 8.453.0.0
Xvid MPEG-4 Video codec (reinstalled with latest)
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I replaced all the ATI drivers with the ones directly from the website, which down-graded me to the 2007 version of the "ATI MOBILITY FIRE GL T2" 6.14.10.6547
    Works great!

  • Why doesn't my video have audio in After Effects?

    ?

You're using video downloaded from a web site or shot on a consumer camera, and the audio's embedded in the video track.  Theat's the most likely situation.  AE needs a separate audio track.  You'll have to transcode it.

  • Details of video preview with Mercury Transmit in the 2014 update to After Effects CC

In the 2014 update to After Effects CC, which is available today, the technology used for video preview on an external monitor has been replaced with Mercury Transmit technology from Premiere Pro. Read about it in detail here:
    http://bit.ly/AE_video_preview
Please post in this thread to discuss or ask questions about these changes.
Read about all of the other changes coming to the 2014 update to After Effects CC here:
    http://bit.ly/AE_CC_next_details

    Jef,
It's your choice if you wish to use Mercury Transmit with your AJA cards, or the AJA Preview plug-in. You do not need to uninstall anything, but you should disable the one you are not using.
The differences between the two are subtle, but can be simplified (very grossly simplified) to speed vs. accuracy.
The AJA Preview plug-in has a performance advantage over Mercury Transmit. AJA is able to optimize the frame throughput because they have better access to their hardware. You should be able to get real-time previews under most circumstances.
Mercury Transmit has better access to the After Effects pixel buffer than the AJA Preview plug-in. For example, when color management is enabled in the project, Mercury Transmit will apply color transforms. These color transforms require additional processing, which can slow down the preview speed and drop it below real-time.
Performance of video preview in After Effects (any version, using any of the available technologies) otherwise tends to be a straightforward equation of the computer's processor horsepower vs. the requirements of the frames being pushed (frame size + frame rate + color depth + color management). In the "performance of RAM preview when video preview is enabled" section of this page, I've detailed what levers you can pull to affect the performance of video preview in After Effects:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2014/05/video-preview-mercury-transmit-after-effects.h tml
If you continue to have problems, please post more detail about the settings you are using, especially whether you are using greater than 8-bpc color or color management in the project. Machine specs and the state of the machine, including the amount of RAM, free RAM, and other applications running, will also be helpful. Please also state, given all of the above, what frame rate is being reported in the Info panel during RAM preview playback.
