Video playback stutters in small viewer

When I start playing an event or project in the small viewer window in iMovie 11 (at the top right of the screen), the video plays for a few seconds then stops, then plays some more, and pauses again. It keeps stuttering during playback. The strange this is, when I play back in full screen mode (command-G), it plays back smoothly without interruption. The video source is a DV file. It used to play back just fine in the small viewer, but then something happened. My iMac is a quad core and plenty fast enough. Any ideas?

easy answer first: your audio properties do not
match your sequence audio properties, hence the need
to render. if you're working with mini dv, the audio
should be sampled at 16 bit 48k but as you've a
problem, i'll surmise that you're not using the easy
setup to capture and set up your project.
I did the capture awhile ago. I don't think I did anything unusual, but I can't guarantee I didn't. See my answer above to Jim Cookman. If I did, I'm not seeing what it was - nor, more importantly, how to resolve it. Would batch-processing the clips to reconvert the sound in some way be appropriate? If so, any ideas what I would convert to?
it would be helpful if you would go into more detail
about your set up. none of us can look over your
shoulder. where's this media stored? system drive
or another hard drive? if another hard drive, is
that an internal or an external hard drive? if it's
external, how do you have it connected; firewire or
usb? if it's firewire, what else shares the firewire
bus? if it's usb, stop using usb!
External Firewire 400 drive - 4th and last on a chain.
what have you done to your computer recently?
I keep it upgraded with normal Software Update changes. Got the new version of FCP (5.1) a couple months back and it's upgraded to 5.1.4. I don't think I've done anything else out of the ordinary.
Of course I don't want to rule out anything - but the clips play back fine in the Canvas and in QT, so I'm skeptical it would be a hardware issue.
Thanks - I appreciate your interest and help.

  • Audio and video playback stuttering...sometimes

I'm having issues with audio and video playback stuttering at times in several applications. It's the same kind of skipping or stuttering in each application, whether it's iTunes (version 10) or YouTube or Netflix (Safari). I can also hear it when I'm just adjusting the volume via the keyboard, the "clicks" stutter.
I'm not running anything other than iTunes and Safari at once, the iMac has 2 gbs of RAM, it's running Snow Leopard. It also will work sometimes for a while. I just can't figure out why it will work sometimes and not others. Any ideas about what the cause may be? Quicktime X have anything to do with it?

    Quicktime wouldn't work either.

When ever I try to play video in hd, the video playback will stutter. Meanwhile Xbox Media Center can all three videos just fine using the appropriate free video plug-in.
Can the Adobe Flash Player be fixed and optimized to play videos with smooth playback, on the Atom-ION PCs.

Can you say even more about what it is you want to do? I mean, what will the application do, not what are the technical aspects of how it will work?
For a point of comparison, look at this thing I did:
    http://www.cartoonnetwork.com/mixit/
If you try out the Make page, both the template ones and the from scratch one, as well as the View page to see the playback unit in action. Is what you're going to do anything like that?
I have tried the playback part of this as a mobile app, and it so very nearly works ok! Amongst the many problems are that the overall data rate needed is quite high, and mobile devices aren't as consistant or high bandwidth as desktops, the external swfs often need code in them, so that rules out iOS, and to do the layering involved rules out H.264.
At some future time there will hopefully be StageVideo that can use H.264, but I don't know when that will be, or whether it will be responsive enough (FLV is much faster to connect to and play than H.264).
Incidentally, even in the Objective-C world you can't lay things on top of the standard iOS H.264 player. To do that you have to use the AV Foundation class, so it's fairly low level programming. Using FLV in Flash is a lot easier!

  • Apple TV video playback stutters - even with SD

    Hi,
i don't know what i am doing wrong, but i have some serious video playback troubles with my new atv:
All files start to play fine, but somehow - like every few seconds - the movie seems to stuck for a very short time - just an eyeblink. it looks quite the same when you play a HD Movie on a computer and the CPU is not really capable of playing back this files...
it doesn't matter if the video files are on the internal drive or streamed over wlan - same problem...
i'll tried lots of different software for the video converting: visual hub, handbrake, quicktime pro... always the same problem...
The strange thing is - all apple trailer movies playback just fine!!! even in HD - smooth as butter...
    Please help me!
    Thanks - Matt
    my setup:
    Apple TV 2.3:
    720p - 60Hz
    TV:
    Samsung Le-40a557p2 LCD-TV
Sound via optical cable from aTV:
    Sony DAV-IS 50

Assuming you're using conservative video encoding and not pushing things to the limit, I'd say something is probably amiss with the AppleTV.
If you were just streaming I'd look at the network first of all, but you say it hapens with synced files too.
Assuming you've pulled the plug and rebooted at some stage, I think I'd do a system restore (which will delete all media so make sure any purchases are transferred first), and if it was still an issue, then I'd get the new AppleTV replaced.
Occasional glitches happen but they shouldn't happen all the time.

  • HD (High Definition) Video playback stutters and there is lag

When I play HD content on my Macbook the video stutters alot, although the audio is fine. Thus I basically cannot watch HD movies.
Any ideas how to solve this. I've closed all other programs when I'm playing the movie, and I'm not running off the battery.

YouTube playback is going to be limited by your internet connection speed more than anything else, so I wouldn't use that as any test for HD playback. Besides, YouTube is running on Adobe's Flash technology which is notorious for its poor performance.
You say you are having problems even with .m4v files but where did those files come from? Can you try the Disney video clip ("Earth" HD 1080p preview) I mentioned earlier since I know that it works well on my MacBook. If you are playing files that have been encoded by just any user with just any third-party tool then I'm not certain that you can use those as a test either (since some files that you will find on the internet will be encoded, well, just badly).
As for Spaces and Exposé the relative performance with those tools can be affected by a lot of factors, some completely "normal" (i.e. I wouldn't expect their operation to always be smooth).
Have you tried running with _all_ peripherals disconnected and with networking/WiFi/Bluetooth disabled?
Have you confirmed that you don't have a memory or disk "hog" that is running in the background? How about checking for any high-CPU loads that are running in the background? Have you used Apple's Activity Monitor in the show "All Processes" mode (with a sort on % CPU)?
Here is what I see in Activity Monitor while viewing the "Earth" HD preview in the QuickTime Player on my 2.0GHz MacBook (with only the QuickTime Player and Activity Monitor applications running):
Activity Monitor: All Processes Sorted by % CPU
     QuickTime Player     27.6 (% CPU)
     WindowServer            6.2
     Activity Monitor         5.9
     pmTool                      2.9
     kernel_task                 1.9
     Finder                         0.0
<and many more all running at 0.0>
These numbers (% CPU) will fluctuate but generally you should only see QuickTime Player, WindowServer, and Activity Monitor running at more than a few percent. You may see _very_ brief spikes from some other processes but these should be rare and very short. In particular for the "Earth" HD 1080p preview you should see the QuickTime Player at the top of the list and generally running in the mid to upper twenty percent range (% CPU).
Here is the System Memory data from Activity Monitor (this was taken immediately after a restart of my MacBook but while playing the HD video in QuickTime Player):
Free 1.3GB  (this will vary with the amount of installed memory, my MacBook has 2GB SDRAM)
     Wired: 162MB
     Active: 255MB
     Inactive: 9MB
     Used: 426MB
     VM Size: 30GB
     Page ins: 85MB
     Page outs: 0 bytes
     Swap used: 0 bytes
Once again, these numbers will vary so don't expect an exact match to what you will see. However, the only figures that I would think would vary by much are the VM Size and the Free memory if you have more than 2GB installed in your MacBook. This also assumes that you've done a restart immediately before you play the video in the QuickTime Player. By the way, have you installed any third-party memory in your MacBook? You seem to have 4GB, is that all Apple installed or did you upgrade it yourself?
Under Activity Monitor's Disk Activity you will see a lot of variation (up and down in the Data read/sec) while the movie is playing but generally you should stay in the low, single-digit MB/sec range (e.g. 2.1MB/sec). The range will go from only a few hundred KB/sec to maybe (rarely) up to something like 6MB/sec. However, Data write/sec should be very low on average (actually around zero).
Next download the AJA System Test application and check your hard drive performance (it's a free download from http://www.aja.com/products/software/ ). When running the AJA benchmark you should be seeing transfer rates that are consistently and steadily in the 40 to 50MB/sec range. AJA System Test allows you to watch the transfer rates in a graph so you can look for unexpected "stalls" in the hard disk access and transfer rates. To test for long period transfers increase the File Size option to something over 1GB. You may want to run this test several times while you have nothing else running on your MacBook. You may see a few brief but significant drops in the I/O Transactions rate but generally both the read and write rates should stay quite close to 50MB/s. If you don't see numbers like I've noted above then you may have a hard drive issue (either hardware or software or some background task that is using your disk even when you don't know it).
After all the above checks if you are still seeing obvious stutters while playing the "Earth" HD preview then I suspect that you either have a hardware problem or have some third-party software installed that is causing playback problems. This assumes, however, that you have tried all of the troubleshooting steps that I've outlined before (such as disconnecting all peripherals and turning off WiFi and Bluetooth).

  • HELP - Interlaced video playback stuttering!!

    Hi all,
I'm having problems with Quicktime playback of Interlaced video. For testing purposes, I'm playing back a PAL 20 second h.264 clip on a secondary display attached to my MacBookPro with the Apple DVI-S-Video adaptor (set to 720x576 interlaced PAL 50Hz).
When I play the clip, it stutters/flickers (almost like the fields are inverted?).. If I pause then play the movie repeatedly (i.e : stop/start with the spacebar) the problem seems to rectify itself for a few minutes and everything runs smoothly, then it happens again, until I pause/play again.
I'm on Leopard with the latest updates.. I desperately need to find a fix for this ASAP as I have a tradeshow install in a couple of days time.. Any help would me most appreciated.
    Thx

I've never tried how well interlaced material transfers from the Mac directly to an interlaced TV...
But I do know that feeding interlaced .dv from iMovie (in passthrough-to-camcorder mode) via FW a a TV is fine. Or burn it to avideo-DVD via iDVD and use a standalone DVD player to present it.
Maybe H.264 sometimes loses its field sync? Could you use brute force and deinterlace it and live with the less smooth movements of progressive video?

  • 1080 30 video playback stutters on 2011 15inch 2.3 ghz i7 8GB Ram

When playing back 1080 30fps video the clips stutter and drop frames full screen in Quicktime. The MBP is a 2011 15inch 2.3 GHz i7 with 8GB RAM, AMD Radeon HD 6750 and Intel HD Graphics 300.
I would think that a machine of this sophistication would play back 1080 30 full screen with ease.
Does anyone have suggestions on how to improve full screen playback?

These are .mp4 1080p 30 files from GoPro HD2 cameras. Average file size is 2GB. The problem is not consistent...but intermitent. There may be something that I don't understand about memory usage/reservation during long review sessions.

  • 7.0.2 Does NOT resolve video playback issues

Still no fix for video playback stuttering in this version. Maybe it will help some of you having iPod problems, but I don't see any other improvements.

On the iPad, close any open windows so you see the "favorites" screen, then you should see the Private link at the lower-left of the screen. For the iPhone, see:

When I use my IPhone 4S to view the Shaw Go Movie Central App when I am at home I only use WiFi which is automatic, I start watching a show and sometimes I will get a message like "you can not use your cellular for video playback" or something close to that. Then I received an email from Telus saying I had used my 3G instead of Wi-Fi  using 75% of my data. How can this happen when I'm on Wi-Fi at home? If it switched to 3G for some reason I should have been disconnected and not just transferred to 3G network using up my data. What is the fix for this??

It doesn't have to be that complicated, Verizon iPhones come unlocked, just tell VZ you're going on Holiday/Traveling and suspend the service, no need to pay for service if you're not going to be using it. Pick up local SIM cards in the countries of your choosing, pop them in, re-activate iMessage and you're set!
I recommend getting a SIM card from the Three network in England, they have great EU roaming rates and free like-home roaming in Italy.
Set your phone's region to match the country you're in, it'll save from some headaches when calling local/international numbers.
    To answer your questions,
    1. If you choose not to have a local SIM card, it is good to keep your phone in Airplane mode to save battery.
    2. Make sure the two iPhones have different names to reduce sync/restore issues.
    3. If husband has an iPhone also, you can chat with iMessage/Facetime, just give him heads up about the new number you'll have. Otherwise, use Whatsapp if he's got an Android. You can activate Whatsapp with your American number or the international number if you choose to get a SIM in Europe.
Also, Get the MagicJack app and/or Google Hangouts, both of those apps provide you with free calling to the USA and Canada using any internet connection. Google Voice is another good way to SMS across the seas.
Let me know if you need any more tips for iPhoning across the pond.

  • Why is video playback continually stuttering after the Mountain Lion 10.8.2 update?

Since updating to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 video playback in iTunes and QuickTime is unwatchable. The video stutters constantly then plays catch up to the sound. I'm running a 2011 Mac Mini i5 2.3 GHz and 8 Gb of RAM. Anyone know how to roll back the update to a working version of Mountain Lion?

Hello, you'd have to reinstall 10.8.0 or 10.8.1, but...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

I have successfully run Apple Hardware Test and it returned the error code...
    4SNS/1/40000001:VPOR
A  Google search reveals that this is a sensor error. The "V" of VPOR indicates a voltage sensor and the "P" indicates the sensor is on the Power bus. However don't yet know what the "OR" refers to.
I have had a non operative optical disk drive for a year or more but the fault with the video only developed in the last week or two. Could the "O" in VPOR refer to the Optical drive?
By the way, I got the impression from the instructions on running the Apple Hardware Test that I had to use the internal dvd drive to run the APT program from the install disk. But this turned out to be not the case. Just put install disk ito an external drive plugged into the usb ports and use system preferences to set this drive as the start up disk.

  • View Video Playback DV50

I learned on here to use DV50 for photo only slideshows. I also learned on here that I cannot view the output with this codec via my Canopus converter like I do with DV sequences.
If I go to View>Video Playback>Apple Firewire NTSC, I can view my DV50 sequence on my monitor. I'm assuming that I'm viewing it as if it were a DV sequence? Seems like it would be OK to view it that way realizing that the DV50 codec will only make it better? Is that right?

Just wanted to confirm what I was doing. Appreciate it.

  • How can i monitor network traffic to debug video playback issues from a NAS?

I am having problems playing videos on my new Mini that i am using as an HTPC.
I have a brand new Mac Mini running Lion with a 2.7 i7 processor and 8GB of RAM with a wired connection to a switch. .
My switch is a NETGEAR ProSafe GS108T-200NAS set to default settings. I haven't had a chance to start messing with VLAN settings or anything else. There is a bit of a learning curve on my part on this end.
My NAS is a ReadyNAS Pro (RNDP6000) with 3 x 1 TB hitachi ultrastar (HUA722010CLA330) drives and a 1.5 TB seagate (ST31500341AS) drive setup in RAID config using X-RAID2.
The problem I am having is video playback when accessing large video files off of the NAS.  These are typically 1080 HD mkv files.
I have tested movies as small as 7.5GB with only slight stutters on occasion.  I tried a 10.5GB movie and the stalling was much more pronounced. Movies larger than 11GB are completely unwatchable stalling every minute or so.
I have also tried large movies on the local drive and that is not a problem at all - they play back just fine.  Beautiful playback in hidef.  Mind you, some of these are the same files that were stalling over the network.
I have also noticed that some other network devices get kicked off the network when a movie is playing.
I think it has something to do with the transfer speed of files over the network and the switch - i am no expert at this mind you.
I am wondering if there is some sort of utility that i can use to monitor network activity on the mini so that i can fix my problem.  Or has anyone made chages in their switch settings to optimize data trasfer speeds.
    Any advice or recommendations on.
    Thank you all!

OK, I did a couple of things and ran things a couple of times.
First what I did settings wise:
I enabled jumbo frames on the Mac Mini, ReadyNAS Pro, and the Netgear GS108T switch.  All with MTU set to 9000.
I went ahead and enabled jumbo frames on the rest of the computers on the network just in case.
After these changes I ran into the same problems with videos timing out - very annoying and frustrating as you can imagine.
Then I started playing with device configurations.  My original configuration was NAS > Netgear switch > Mac Mini. I went ahead and switched the switch to an Airport Extreme I have as my WAP and the setup looked like this - NAS > Airport Extreme > Mac Mini.
Well, long story short, no go.  It appears to me that the NAS is the one having issues providing the necessary data at the proper speed.  I also tried playing sopme movies off of the NAS onto a desktop i have and had the same issues - choppy frames and crashing movies.  I even tried connecting wirelessly to see if that would work.
BTW, I have the Mac accessing the file system using CIFS.
I don't know what else I could do.
I am going to have to go to the Netgear forums to see if i can figure this out.  Hopefully, I can get things going to be able to help some people out.
If anyone has any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated.
My only other alternative is spending $2000 for the thunderbolt capable NAS that Apple sells - it's only money!

  • Video playback in Aperture

    Hi,
I've imported alot of video in Aperture, converting with handbrake and I can view it fine. My problem is the archaic viewing options that come with Aperture. It's very difficult to make the slider go back or forward. I like to watch my kids sports etc. and when I need to analysis a play, it's painful to try and go back 10 seconds or so. Is there a way to have a more powerful player be used as a default inside Aperture?
    Thanks for any insight.
    John

Your options are limited; there are ways to get what you want, but they are not as smooth as they should be. Video in Aperture is, as you've discovered, quite limited.  One shouldn't have to resort to external editors to simply play and analyze video.  You might suggest to Aperture that they provide video playback controls at least equivalent to QuickTime 10:  "Aperture→Provide Aperture Feedback".
    1.  Learn to use two fingers on the trackpad (if you aren't already).  Trackpads work better if you use one finger to click, and another finger to drag.  I use my index fingers.  For small adjustments to sliders, click-and-hold with one finger, then set your other finger on the pad, and roll that fingertip left or right.  (I'm on an early 2011 MBP {5.5}, running 10.6.8.)
    2.  For playback only (DO NOT edit this way), you might make your video files Referenced on import.  Then you can right-click a movie and select "Show in Finder".  From Finder, simply use Quick View (still not quite what you want), or open the file in QuickTime 10 (iirc, is part of the OS).  QuickTime 10 has much fuller playback options, including changing the speed both forward and backward, and using the arrow keys to step through frames.
    3.  If you prefer to use an external editor to view your movies, set one up via "Aperture→Preferences→External Video Player".  You can specify QuickTime 10, QuickTime 7 (you may have this pre-dumbed-down version of QT on your system if you've upgraded from previous versions of OS X), or any other editor.  I use MPEG Streamclip -- but it's likely overkill for what you want.  The problem with this method is that even if you don't make any changes, Aperture will create a second Master.  Since these Masters have no use to you, and take up significant storage space, you will want to delete them manually.  This process is flawed and not recommended.
Note that QT 7, QT 10, MPEG Streamclip, and others all have the ability to move forward or backward using the arrow keys.  This gives excellent control of playhead positioning, and will, I think, be exactly what you are looking for.

Greetings! I just loaded Final cut 5.1 after being a final cut 3.2 user. I have the fire wire out from my computer into my small Sony camera then to my televison everyting was working fine with it playing through to my camera then out to my television. I let someone else get on and do some editing and now all of a sudden I can see the video play fne on the computer monitor but it will not play out to my camera. I trashed it then reloaded it and it still won't play through there must be some setting he unknowingly changed or something can anyone help me? When you hit the space bar it is supposed to play through. Please help. Thanks !

    Hi,
Check to see that external video is turned on.
