Video plays fine in iTunes / only plays audio in iPod

I put an MPG4 movie into iTunes and it plays fine in iTunes. After syncing it into my iPod, I find that it plays the sound but not the actual video and it shows a tiny still of the video where the album cover usually goes.
Please help.

What type of iPod are you using? You've posted in the "iPod with color display" section, this model isn't designed to play video content. To play video files you need a 5th Generation iPod with video. You can read more about what formats you can use on this page: iPod 101: Which Files Work With iPod and iTunes

  • Videos play audio only?

Since the iPod got dropped on the floor recently, everything works but we can't get the video from the videos, we get the audio only. Games work, music works fine. If this was a problem with the screen, these wouldn't work, right
Videos play fine on iTunes on the computer, but not iPod. Only audio plays on iPod.
If the files were corrupted, wouldn't play full videos on mac. or would it.

    Possible cable connection error...
If you have a cable +designed for use with the Apple iPod,+ then all you need do is match up the colors, red to red, white to white and yellow to yello. If you're curious...
    Red is right side audio
    White is left side audio
    Yellow is Video
If you have a cable +designed for use with something other than the Apple iPod,+ the following may be your situation:
White is Right Audio and should connect to the TV's Red jack
Yellow is Left Audio and should connect to the TV's White jack
Red is Video and should connect to the TV's video jack

  • Mpeg video plays in iTunes, but no audio on iPod

I have a 10 minute video that plays fine in iTunes 7.0.1.8 on Widows XP. I did the "Convert Selection for iPod", which then allowed me to download the video.
However, when I play the video on the iPod, there is no sound.
The article "iPod plays video but not audio of some exported files" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302588
describes this same condition, and attributes it to "muxed audio".
The suggestion to do "Show Movie Info" in Quicktime Player did not confirm the format as "MPEG1 Muxed" or "MPEG2 Muxed". Instead the Format field has ", 25971 x 28257, unknown" - kind of an unsatisfactory description.
The video file plays fine in Qucktime Player, it plays fine in iTunes - but it has lost all audio on the iPod.
Does anybody have a fix for this?
    Dave

First, make sure you are running the most recent update on your iPod.
Second, what are you using to convert your video? Have you tried purchasing any of the videos from iTunes? Do they work okay??

  • Video podcast only playing audio on iPod

    Hi,
In the past (iTunes 11.4) I was able to download a video podcast from a website and link it to iTunes by adding it to the library. It would automatically show up in home videos so I would right-click the file, get info, and then change the media kind to podcast. It would then join the rest of the episodes in podcasts. Then when I synced my iPod it would copy the file to the podcasts app and I could watch the video.
Now using iTunes 12.0.1.26 when I repeat those steps the podcast joins the rest of the episodes in the podcasts section in iTunes and plays as a video in iTunes, but when viewing the podcasts in episode list view the video icon is missing (although strangely it appears in the standard podcast view). And when I sync the podcast to my iPod and I play it through the podcasts app it plays as an audio only podcast. When I check the file system at /var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control/Music/Fxx the video file is there and can be played as a video using the default video app, so there must be something iTunes is doing to tell the iPod to play it as audio only.
I have noticed in iTunes that when I get info of the previously added podcast episodes that it shows video properties whereas the newly added episodes do not and if I select new and old episodes at the same time and try to Get Info a message pops up saying "Your selection contains more than one kind of media." Whereas if I only select the new episodes or only select the old episodes, it doesn't pop up.
Also in Get Info, under options, the new episode show an option for equalizer (although it is greyed out and cannot be change), whereas the older episodes do not. And under Sorting, the new episodes have an option to sort podcast whereas the old episodes do not.
*(Old episodes refers to episodes added in iTunes 11.4, new episodes refers to episodes added in iTunes 12.0.1.26)
    Thank you.

Hello, I just had success getting things to work once with podcasts then tried it with iTunesU after I could not repeat it with podcasts. I had the same problem, What I ended doing with iTunesU I'm sure you can apply to podcasts it appears to be an iTunes 12 issue not an iOS issues but affects iOS devices 6,7,8. I just got lucky with solution. I am quite vague on what I did, so in coming days ( had enough today) I'm going to attempt it again and write an exact procedure. but while its fresh in my mind this is what I think I did with iTunesU to get same functionality as podcasts. Firstly talk about what we use to do, as you would do in the past I i used get info then changed it to podcast, as we know that won't work and files play as audio only. So I got my (the ones that wouldn't work on iPad but did on the mac) podcasts in iTunes and selected all (contents of podcast) then get info, i then changed them on mass to home video again( it protests but you continue). I then went to normal library ( can't recall what its called these days) created an empty playlist folder, then from my standard library i dragged all videos into it. I then selected all get info changed to iTunes U (i tried podcast i did succeed once but could not repeat) also changed institution and and instructor ( i think they must be in to work????)( I would say as it relates to podcasts you follow a similar procedure, my gut tells me its not working due to missing fields, we must work out which need filling in)
From there plugged in iPad clicked devices tab, strangely then left the actual collection in question unchecked, however below that box is another that says include items from playlist, i checked mine that i created earlier , playlist will only appear there if you went through the painful approach at start ( i.e. in get info you made the whole playlist is of type ' iTunes U' , I assume will be a similar case with podcasts). I then synced. didn't think it worked, then closed app on device and opened it and perfect there it was and it played video and then played next after etc
I am sure i have unnecessary steps but it was guess work. once I've refined it ill post technique. I'm certain it all hinges on making other fields right other than podcasts and them all being changed to the same at the same time. was weird that include from playlist worked rather than collections. that is probably key too.
Hope this is helpful, just a disclaimer i included to much info because the answer is in there.

  • FCP Video files burn to DVD, Only gets audio when played

    Hi,
I know this has been asked many times, but, it's late at night and I'm looking for a quick answer please.
I burnt ideo clips, which I have exported thru FCP, and burn them straight onto a DVD thru the Finder.
The person who got the DVD said he only gets audio from the clips, so, he can't see them.
Have many ideas of what I should do, but, what is the most common solution to this problem?

#48 - Cannot view DVCPRO HD or HDV or ProRes on my computer.
Shane's Stock Answer #48 - Cannot view DVCPRO HD, HDV or ProRes QT files on your computer.
The DVCPRO HD, HDV and ProRes codecs only comes with FCP. If your computer does not have FCP installed, it cannot view these quicktime files. It doesn't matter if it is a Mac or PC, without FCP installed, you cannot view these files.
If you need to view ProRes material, you can download the ProRes decoder (mac and windows compatible) for ProRes
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/AppleProRes_QuickTime_Decoder_1_0_forWindows.
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/AppleProRes_QuickTime_Decoder_1_0_forMac
If your footage was captured as DVCRO HD you can buy the Calibrated DVCPRO HD decoder:
    http://www.calibratedsoftware.com/QDVCProHD.asp
HDV, XDCAM? Calibrated has you covered too:
    http://www.calibratedsoftware.com/QXD.asp
If you have MXF files from a P2 camera and you need to view the footage on a computer without FCP, you can download P2CMS from Panasonic:
    http://www.panasonic.com/business/provideo/p2-hd/downloads-and-updates.asp
Or you need the other party to compress the footage into a format your computer can play, like H.264.

  • M4p files not playing audio on iPod

Recently I have tried to convert mpeg files so that I may play them on my iPod video. It really has not worked out for me though. I am using quicktime pro to convert the video but as soon as I put the video on my iPod there is no sound. I am using all the updated versions on iTunes and Quicktime but the problem is not going away. Can anybody help? Thank you.

Quicktime or Quicktime Pro (which iTunes uses) don't convert "muxed" ( muxed means multiplexed where the audio and video are stored on the same track) video files properly. It only plays the video and not the audio.
See:iPod plays video but not audio.
You need a 3rd party converter to convert the file with both audio and video.
See this for help: Guide to converting video for iPod (Mac/Windows).

  • Downloaded a tvshow but only getting audio on ipod

I downloaded 2 tvshows. They appear on my ipod but when I play them, I only get audio. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I've tried finding the proper settings in a manual but can't find any reference to confirm if mine are set properly or not.

On your ipod go to settings>video settings>tv out. Make sure tv out is on off. If it is'nt on off you can change it to off by clicking the center select button.

  • MPEG4(mp4) video plays audio only

    Hi all,
Being noobie here, I have searched and it seems I am the only one confused by this. I have a new Xmas pressie 8800 Sirocco, all else seems great. BUT
Whenever I receive an MP4 video (even one that is playing fine on friends phones) I get good audio and a black screen with just a static 'film-clip' icon i.e. no video track.
This casme to my notice because all 3GP videos I receive have really distoted audio.
Hurumph. Any help or ideas please?
    Thanks :-)

I have erased this line, completely.

    jerry_lewis, many thanks!
That and koRngear's post have set me on the trail of knowledge
After much frustration I have a definitive answer to my (and maybe others yet to come) problem with this phone.
It crashes the phone's OS or processor if the AAC audio codec is used to encode a video. (even though the AAC codec is a part of the 3gp sec)
Using the AMR_NB codec produces AWFUL biscuit tin rattle soundtrack.
I have verified this completely by removing all other variables (i think ) and through repetition.
Either I have a faulty Sirocco OR the Sirocco's handling of video soundtracks is (sounds like) plucked.

  • Music videos play audio only

i have a bunch of music videos i downloaded from youtube using PodTube. the videos are in .mp4 format that are converted for the ipod. when i sync them to the iphone they appear in the music video section, but when i play them i get a blank screen but it plays the full audio. my question is, how do i get the video to play (along w/ the audio)?
the video dimensions are 320x240 and the codec is MPEG-4.

found a temporary solution, but it still strange. for each clip I did "get info" and changed the media type from "video clip" to "films". Now they play just fine.

  • AVI video plays audio only on MacOS, QuickTime 7.2.0

    Hi,
I recently received an AVI video from a friend. When I play it on either QT 7.2 or RealPlayer -- I get the audio, but no video.
I transferred the file to a PC running Windows XP, and QuickTime plays the video properly there.
    Any suggestions?

But how would I know which codec is correct for my particular AVI?
If the file opens in the QT Player, open the "Inspector" window and check the "Format:" line. For most files it will indicate the video codec used, encoded dimensions, and color depth of the video track, as well as, the audio codec, channel assignments, and sampling rate of the soud track. Usually this is enough for you to google the codec for Mac use to see if something is readily available. For most commonly use AVI formats, Perien is frequently sufficient. If the codec turns out to be proprietary (e.g., DivX, WMV, ext.), then you may have to purchase a codec. If it turns out to a really old one like "Indeo," then you may simply be out of luck as far as the QT Player is concerned.

  • Imported Video plays audio out of sync in PPro

Imported C-Span file using Houlo. I converted it to MP4 using Houlo.  Plays well.  Using Gspot it plays at 23.976 fps which Premiere Pro correctly identifies.  However when I play the two hour file in the Source monitor at the one hour mark the audio is badly out of sync.  I started a new project and only pulled up this video to try to make sure there were no other settings to affect this. I want to pull a couple of quotes.  Where am I going wrong here?

  • Videos played on my iPod earlier today, now they won't...

haven't seen this one on the forum...
i was watching videos on my ipod earlier today. they worked fine. then I plugged the ipod into my computer to charge it, shut the computer down, the screen read "ok to disconnect", and I unplugged it. now when I try to play any video, even ones that worked before, the screen goes black for a moment, i can't control anything, and the screen goes back to the list of videos.
i use osx10.2.8 at home so I can't add videos on this computer. i used a friend's computer to load the videos on but I've plugged the ipod in to my computer several times since then. any idea what could be going on?

I assume this music is still in your iTunes library correct?  Are you getting any error messages when you try to sync the music back over to it?  Why won't it sync?
How exactly do you have your iPod configured to sync music from your iTunes library?  In other words, what options do you have enabled from under the iPod's Summary and Music tabs?

  • Video play back on ipod nano 6th gen

Just curious, since the 7th gen has video playback features, is apple going to have a firmware update for 6th gen ipod nano to play video as well?

More than likely not, but since all of us here are only end users like yourself, nobody would know such information and its against the Terms of Use of these forums to speculate. Sorry.
