Video Poster Frames

Hi Everyone,
Can someone assist me please.  I'm trying to automatically auto-generate poster frames for videos.  Currently I have videos that's embeded into our site, before pressing play a blank screen is displayed.  I would like to have someway of going into the video for say 30 seconds and display that as the poster frame prior to pressing play.

The YouTube preview images are created during the upload/encoding process.
It has nothing to do with the YouTube player.
Strobe Media Playback is a video player.
There is no encoding process which can create and save an image.
You may be able to automate the create-poster-image process on your server using FFMPEG.
Search for "FFMPEG poster image" and you will find some methods using PHP for example.
There was (may still be) a plug-in for JW Player for creating preview images.
It involves a SWF plug-in file and some PHP code.
I could not get it to work as there was little to no documentation.
Perhaps for commercial subscribers they provide help to get it working.
It may be possible to create a Strobe plug-in to do something similar.
But the Strobe project seems to have gone dormant so you are definitely on your own for that one.

  • IPad video poster frames white box with grey tv, looking for fix

I have searched the forums and can not find a working solution.
I have mpeg4 Apple TV/ iPad videos that I have added to my iPad through iTunes.
When they came in, all the poster frames were black, as that's the first frame of video.  I manually went though iTunes and set each poster frame.
I then sync and reboot on the iPad.  Poster frames are now white squares with grey tv.
    Repeated the above twice.
Signed in and out of home share (as suggested by one forum) and reboots iPad.
Have removed all files from iPad and then added back.  Back to black poster frames.
I have no way to check if the poster frame are correct as in iTunes, I can only see files on the iPad in list view.  When I do get info, there is nothing about the poster frame.
Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Still looking for an answer on this.  In addition to the above:
I have tried setting the poster frames inside of iTunes
I have tried setting the poster frames outside of iTunes and then importing onto the iPad though iTunes.
    Setting ratings made no difference.
I can not add artwork manually, it is greyed out in the info pain and not accessible.
Still same results.  Now all video files are a Grey Square with a different symbol depending on what "Media Kind" the file is set to.  And in fact, when I do this, the files disappear from iTunes and I can no longer find them.
    Apple, Please help!!
Reading the Forums, this is a problem that has yet to be answered.

  • Strange Imported Video Poster Frame Colors

I've had this weird problem since the days of iTunes 9, and I haven't found a solution yet.
When I import videos into iTunes, the colors in the poster frame are all messed up, and very much different from the colors that actually appear in the respective frame of video.
This has significant ramifications since when I sync these videos to my iPhone, the "corrupted" poster frames are shown in the iPod app.
What could be causing the problem, and how can I fix it?
EDIT: I should add that the videos I'm importing were either created in iMovie on my Mac, or converted to a format playable on my iPod using Handbrake. This anomaly appears to be affecting all imported videos, not just the ones converted using Handbrake. Video purchases from the Store do not appear to be affected.

I don't know how it was fixed, but the problem seems to have gone away in iTunes 10.1.

  • How Set Video Poster Frame (Image) for Intro Media?

    iBooks Author Mavens,
How can the Poster Frame (aka, Poster Image) for the Intro Media segment of an iba video be set?
Irrespective of anything I do with the Widget Inspector...such as attempting to move the Poster Frame to a frame at the desired ~7 second point (in a ~10 second clip)...iBA keeps resetting the Poster Frame to ~2.5 seconds (not wanted).
    Very, very frustrating...suggestions?
    Many, many thanks!
    Plane Wryter

If you use a video in any place but intro, will your iBA let you choose and keep any poster frame setting you like?

  • Has anyone else encountered a problem with poster frames not recognising a video's pixel aspect ratio

I'm discovering a strange effect with some of the .mp4 videos I've upload into iBooks Author. They're Pal SD 4:3 .movs with a 16:9 pixel aspect ratio and they play out fine on the iPad. However the iBooks software seems to be ignoring the pixel aspect ratio of the poster frame. This leads to the situation.
    1) When I drag my video into iBooks author all looks good - the video is 16:9 and if I choose to set a poster frame (or leave it at default) it looks 16:9 in the iBooks Author.
    2) I preview my book and it opens in iBooks on the iPad. But now the poster frame aspect ratio is 4:3
    3) I click on the video to start playing and it immediately jumps to 16:9 aspect ratio and plays out fine.
    4) If it scroll down a couple of pages and then scroll back the video poster frame has now reset itself to 4:3
This sounds like a bug to me. Anyone else had it? Do you know if it's possible to report bugs without having a Developer licence?
    Thanks for any help
    Rob

While there is no formal bug reporting method similar to what devs have w/apps, iBA does have a 'Provide iBooks Author Feedback' menu item.

  • Lightroom 5 Video - What is a "Poster Frame" ?

Hi, in Lightroom 5's video editing i can set a "poster frame". Could you tell me if that is one or more of the following, or something more/else?
the definition of the Youtube preview image if i upload the video?
the definition of the video's preview image inside Lightroom?
a new, separate still image file showing the video's moment i had selected when clicking "Set Poster Frame"?
I have very conflicting information about this from experts and i would appreciate answers from all who are really sure about what they say and who have actually used the "poster frame" feature successfully.
    Thanks for your help!

Hi.  Did you ever get an answer?  I'm curious to know how the poster frame is useful outside of lightroom.  So far, I've noticed that it does not translate when i import a video into aperture.  Does it write the frame location to metadata?

  • How do I select the Poster Frame when exporting to video?

    PP CS6
I cannot find how to select the frame that I want to appear as the Poster Frame in the exported video.
I can select it I can change one by right clicking an imported video OK but not the sequence!
I've been through every menu I can find & even Lynda.com training!
I'm sure that there must be a way but I'm blowed if I can find it!!

There are two common meanings for the phrase "poster frame":
A standalone image on disk (JPG etc) which is displayed by a player before the video is loaded - commonly used by video player apps on websites (YouTube etc), InDesign and PDF files, etc. so the video asset doesn't have to be opened in order for the viewer to see what they're about to watch - although the image is normally captured from the video it doesn't have to be.
An image resource embedded into the XMP/ID3 data of a video or audio file which can sometimes be shown in the player, but is normally set because it  appears as the thumbnail image when viewing the files in Finder or Windows Explorer. It's not part of the content stream, it's in the file header. In MP3 files it's used to store album artwork.
You can create standalone JPEG images from PP using the camera icon below the monitor and can semi-automate the export of a still image alongside your video using presets in Adobe Media Encoder, but there's no option in PP (or via Adobe Media Encoder) to specify the embedded poster image in a rendered media file. Several third-party apps can do it, either during render (Compressor / Squeeze) or after the fact (Quicktime Pro), but support for these embedded resources depends on the wrapper for the video file.
The ability to set a 'poster frame' in the clip bins in PP is solely there to help you organize your project assets visually - for example if the imported footage starts from black, or if you want to choose a frame where the slate is visible - but your choice has no effect on the sequences at export and isn't written back into the original footage.

  • Music Video displays wrong ARTWORK.  Displays a POSTER FRAME rather than the JPG that I have given it.

I am using ITunes 11.05.5 on Windows 7 Professional.   Have thousands of videos ... MP4 Music Videos.   I make my own "ARTWORK" (on JPG per artist for all music videos by that artist).  I place the artwork in the file by "GET INFO", "ARTWORK", copy in my own JPG Image.    I confirm that there is only one image in the ARTWORK and that it is the correct image.   When I save and go back to the GET INFO everthing is fine.   When I view it in MS Explorer or in ID3-TAG the ARTWORK is also fine.   This process works fine for most everything but unexplainably fails and I can't fix it on certain occasions.
THE FAILURE:    Let me explain the problem that occurs on rare occasions (and once it occurs I can't ever fix it).   Lets say I have 5 music videos from the artist, John Jones.    I embed my own artwork (the same ARTWORK for all music videos from this same artist, John Jones) and all five videos group under the proper. same ARTWORK in the GRID VIEW.   Now, I obtain another music video from John Jones, once again I put the same ARTWORK on this file and now when I go into GRID VIEW it displays a POSTER FRAME (of that artist, John Jones) that I have never seen (although it must have come from the video since it is a POSTER FRAME of John Jones) .....  from that point on, all six music videos from John Jones also display that same ARTWORK (the wrong poster frame - but same poster frame for all John Jones music videos) even tho the first five were displaying properly before (but not longer).     It is as if a POSTER FRAME of John Jones is in cache and associated with the artist John Jones and can not be deleted.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling ITunes, but it doesn't work.    I have tried deleting the new Music Video that I added and that started the problem (number six); hoping the the original five would return to nomal ...  but that does not work.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

this one is actually a really rare symptom of a flaky connection to the ipod on a Windows PC. there's more going on in terms of hardware on nanos and 5th gens than in the earlier models ... so if the connection is flaky to precisely the right/wrong degree, itunes will see the ipod, but misidentify it as an earlier version of ipod.
tracking down the cause of the flakiness can be tricky ... as you already know ...
just checking. have you tried connecting with a different (known-good) USB cable? does that seem to have any impact on the rate of occurence of the problem?

  • Is it possible to add a poster frame to video in HTML Resources

I have several videos that will be repeated throughout a folio, so I have made the HTML Resource zip containing them, how do I control the appearance?
If I put a image behind the HTML Content and set the web overlay to transparent I just get a black box, If I set the web overlay to autoplay I just get a white box with a play symbol. so is there anyway to specify a custom poster frame?

I've also tried adding the image as a background image in the HTML but the default white poster frame sits on top of this

  • Using PHP to Create a Poster Frame from a Video

I have a PHP script which I am using to grab a poster frame from an arbitrary video ($video). Currently it breaks the video into all its frames, counts the files, and grabs the middle one...
    system("mplayer -vo png $video");
    system("mv " . sprintf("%08d.png", floor(system("ls -1 | wc -l") / 2)) . " /home/.");
The issue with the code above is that, until completion, it fills up a large portion of the hard drive on the server. I know I can figure out the number of the middle frame with the code below, but I do not know of a way to pull out the middle frame without pulling out all the other frames too...
    $fps = system("x=$(mplayer -msglevel all=0 -identify -vo null -frames 0 $video 2>&1 | grep ID_VIDEO_FPS) ; echo ${x#*=}");
    $length = system("x=$(mplayer -msglevel all=0 -identify -vo null -frames 0 $video 2>&1 | grep ID_LENGTH) ; echo ${x#*=}");
    $midframe = floor($fps * $length / 2);
Does anyone have any ideas? At the very least, is there a way I can read each frame but only save the middle one?

tony5429 wrote:Yeah; I may end up going with a solution like that. I had hoped to be able to seek to a specific frame. Really I'd like the script to be very robust - for example, if I pass it a 30-fps video that is one second long, I'd like to get the #15 frame...
Google told me mplayer can't seek to a specific frame, but does 1/100th of a second seeks. I'm not sure how precise the duration estimates are.

  • Poster Frames on Ripped Videos Lost, Not Synced to iPad or iPhone

iTunes 10.2.1 on latest Mac OS X 10.6.7.
I have videos which I've ripped from Blu-ray via MakeMKV and Handbrake. When I import them into iTunes and then set a poster frame, more often than not:
    1. The poster frame is easily lost, especially if I do a Get Info on a movie. Sometimes the poster frame disappears without me having done anything.
    2. The poster frame is not included when I sync the movie onto my iPad or iPhone.
    3. Also, chapter thumbnails for chapters appear in all black on the iPad or iPhone.
This is seriously lame. Does anyone know of a solution for these problems? Is ANYONE from Apple working on this? This USED to work in the days before iOS 4.2 and iTunes 10.

I've just experienced  similar problem at work and found a solution to some extent. Initially we got the video artwork looking correct in itunes by right clicking on the video window whilst it was playing and clicking 'set poster frame', however although this worked for itunes the artwork dissappeared once on the iPad. The solution I have found is to use metaX on the pc to set the .mp4 video artwork and then use itunes on my mac to sync the videos. It's worth noting that every time I tried to use the mac version of metaX to add the artwork it made the entre video into a black screen.
Basically it seems itunes fails to proerly tag the metadata of some files, luckily other programs like metaX seem to do it ok.

  • No poster frame displayed on music videos

    Hi all,
I have a 60 GB iPod video with cover art enabled and can see cover art when playing music. When playing music videos from the music side, I get no cover art. I understand that you're supposed to see the "poster frame" that you can change in iTunes. I asked this question when I first got my iPod video on 10/19 but didn't get a resolution. No other problems with it (except for the video fast-forward bug).
    Thanks for the help.
    Dana

Thank you. I thought it was me. Another bug. What blows my mind is Apple releases an iPod updater on Nov. 30 that only fixes another shuffle bug, yet there are several iPod bugs and a glaring iTunes bug that still remains unfixed. What's up with that?

  • Setting poster frame for video automatically?

Does anyone know if there is a way to automatically set a poster frame for imported video files in Aperture 3? I was very pleased to be able to import all of my camera video files, but once imported they all were black. I am able to click and "Set Poster Frame" but that is a very tedious process to go through for even a small amount of video files.

Thank you!!!! I've been working on this for hours. I've completely erased and re-imported the videos no less than three times. The poster frames would show...and then disappear on final import...it was driving me crazy!
Just in case I can help someone else track this post down with google...
Aperture 3 was giving me black thumbnails when I imported Flip HD videos. I tried setting poster frames, but no love. Generate thumbnails corrects the problem of black poster frame, black key frames, black thumbnails, whatever you want to call it. thank you.
