Video problem after boot [SOLVED]

Hi everyone, I have the this issue
I already installed arch on a vaio VGN-S360 but after it boot the screen first goes white per pixel, I mean each pixel goes from black to white and then to black I don't know how to explain it exactly. The thing is that the screen after boot the system is completely black.
I can access like root, and reboot so I realize that the command line is operational but the screen is no giving me the output.
Can it be a grub problem or a specific hardware issue???
Any suggestion and help will be helpful
thanks everyone

I found the solution to the issue, this laptop has a ATI graphic card and it seems that the problem is there.
in the boot menu, hit ' e ' for edit the menu settings and and the end of the linux line add radeon.modeset=0
whit that the system goes fine.
I thinks that I should add that line to the menu.lst

  • Fresh Install and no modules after boot [SOLVED]

    Hi,
Been with this problem for quite a while. I'm piss€d off
(Sorry about my english.. I'm Portuguese...)
    I've installed this release
    Current Release: 2013.01.04
    Included Kernel: 3.6.11
As i stop using Arch on a daily basis, i decide to install it again on my laptop. (I'm still using slackware, though)
I followed the wiki procedures and when i reboot i've got no modules loaded.
    The reason:
uname -a give me 3.2.29 and the modules installed are 3.7.4.1.
I don't know what to do more. I've done 2 fresh installs and the results are the same.
I've upgraded with pacman -Syu, i've done:
    pacman -S udev
    pacman -S mkinitcpio
    mkinitcpio -p linux
    pacman -S linux
    once or twice and... nothing.
something is missing and i don't know what. I'm out of ideas.
    Thx for the help,

  • IMac Still Has Video Problems after Upgrade

I did the firmware and software upgrade to my iMac, which was supposed to fix the video problem, however the problem continues. I am using OS 10.4.11. My computer never "froze" however the screen went haywire. I would have to do a soft restart (if I could find the restart dropdown window) or I would have to do a hard restart. Now I can do a screen refresh to do a soft restart.
Is Apple aware the these Intel iMacs are a POS? I use it for 3D design and I can't work more than 10 minutes before my screen starts going wacko. I've used Macs since 1985 and this is the first POS Mac i've owned. I don't want to have to get another computer, I can't afford it.
Any others out there with the same problem? Any solutions?
    Thanks

I like AppleCare, as you get three years of that unlimited phone support. I know many consider it just another extended warranty, but note it can be legitimately purchased at a discount.
Amazon, retail computer stores, also a number of sellers abound online and on eBay, and a price mentioned by someone else on here two years ago that hasn't changed since then - check out L. A. Computer Company, online - you might be surprised!

  • Video problems after RAM upgrade

I recently upgraded my ram from 1GB to 2GB DDR2 667 MHz and everything looks fine with regards to recognizing the RAM and starting up. However, I recently started to notice some video problems in certain areas. For example, my VLC player has problems playing back video now, and it shows a black screen for the video for some avi files but plays back the audio fine. Some games, like Plants vs Zombies, play audio and not the video as well. Has anyone else had this problem?

Don't know anything about 4AllMemory.  But they do indeed have a small Mac section listed.  Hard to tell if the memory listed is specifically for your model.  Also not obvious if they have lifetime warrantees too.
As for OWC's page.  Yes, that 4GB selection, which if you clicked on it would take you here, is memory that will work on your 3,1.  The only real difference between it and the one listed below it for a few dollars more is that the latency of the ram.  You probably woudn't even notice the difference (cas 4 vs. cas 5).

  • Sound/Video Problem after Downloading iTunes 10.5

I recently downloaded the most recent iTunes update, 10.5. After downloading it, I am having problems with the sound and picture of television shows. When I try to watch a tv show, the sound is muffled, and the picture slows or skips constantly. This happens on every tv show I've tried to play, not just one. I haven't noticed any problems with sound from songs though. I had this problem once before after downloading the previous version of iTunes, and completely uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes to solve the issue, and it worked. However, I tried doing it once again this time, and there was no success. I've tried disabling sound enhancements, and that also had no effect. Quicktime is installed and updated as well. I'm running Windows 7. Any help or advice is appeciated.

I'm not sure I quite understand what you mean. iTunes doesn't save a folder of playlists, but if you mean that the iTunes library is empty, or doesn't contain playlists that it had before the upgrade then either restore your backup or make use of the following...
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps youshouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • New video problems after replacing bad cap

We are attempting to repair our first gen IMac G5 after it started having a problem with randomly shutting down. After much online research, and everything pointing towards bad capacitors, we opened up the machine and sure enough there was a bulging cap. We did the LED tests as well (fine), and ran hardware test (which also pointed to a problem on the logic board). After ringing the local Apple tech and confirming that they would only replace the whole board, not individual capacitors, we found a repair shop locally that was willing to solder on a new cap for us.
So we've put the whole machine back together today, and again the LEDs light fine. However, now, the video is totally messed up! It starts up as far as the login screen but it'd be impossible to log in as the screen is so badly scrambled.
Now we're trying to decide what the culprit is--incorrect reassembly? Accidental damage to the video cable during disassembly/assembly? Static electricity zapped the board at some point? Replacement cap not good enough (it's got a much higher uF and voltage rating but that seems to not be critical)?
Any pointers on how to proceed? We're loathe to throw in the towel just yet!

Don't throw in the towel, take it back to your local tech and have her replace the cap with one of the proper rating.

  • Video problems after coming out of sleep mode

    Here's my setup:
Apple TV connected to HDMI switch (Rocketfish) then to Samsung DLP TV.
If I turn everything off and then later in the day try to watch the Apple TV, I get sound, but no picture. I shouldn't say "no picture" as the TV detects input (ie, not showing the "no input" screen)... just a black screen.
I can hear the Apple TV as I move through the menu by using the remote, but again... no picture.
I've tried power cycling the switch and the TV to no avail. I've also unplugged and plugged in the HDMI cable (as soon as I unplug the HDMI cable, I get the no signal screen). None of that does anything.
The only thing that works is unplugging the power cable and then plugging it back in. It then re-boots and works fine... until the next time when the exact same stuff happens.
    Anyone have any thoughts?

I was going to write that I have the same problem, but I think I've just found the solution! (If you can call it that…)
It seems that when you switch to the input to the one that the Apple TV is on, a signal is sent through the HDMI cable that automatically wakes the ATV. If you interrupt it with the remote while it's auto-waking, it gets upset and shuts the whole business down. Try this after you've had your ATV asleep for a few hours
1.) Turn on the television/display and make sure it's on the correct input
2.) Turn on the receiver and set it to the input coming from the ATV if it isn't set to that already
3.) Wait at least 30 seconds
This has been working for me. I just tried to replicate it before posting this, but I'd apparently used my ATV recently enough that I needed to wake it with the remote. I still haven't been able to find much consistency in the behavior, but I haven't needed to unplug and replug the device since I started doing this.
Let me know how it goes!

  • Small problem after installing - solved

After doing a soft-raid install, I forgot to edit my ect/fstab. Of all the things to forget! Ugh
The system still boots ok but because the file system in fstab is not using the raid md dev lines,  I can't get write permissions, even as root and I can't set a root password. Can I chroot back into my system from the install cd to edit the fstab to the correct format. I'm hoping I don't have to reinstall because of this. I have a very confusing setup with raid arrays. Is there a simple way i can fix my fstab?

  • Problems after Booting Just Started

I've been using 10.8.3 for 2 months with no problems.
Twice in my last five boots, my login items do not load, and windows and apps are opened when I do not check the pref in the Shut Down window.
I can log out eventually, but each attempt is initially blocked by one of these open apps, e.g., Firefox.  I didn't know that Firefox could block a log out.
It looks like some kind of corruption, but it doesn't happen every time, at least not yet.   Could this be a virus?
Should I reinstall 10.8.3?  (I have the combo updater.)

    I appreciate your response.
After doing the Safe Boot, I restarted and everything worked properly:  the login items were opened and there were no other apps opened or windows opened.
I'll see what happens over the next several cold starts and let you know.  If your suggestion fixes the problem, that will be very good.  Reinstalling the 10.8.3 update is not my preferred solution.
    Thanks!

  • Keychain access problem after boot to Tiger on another partition

    Hi,
I ran into an odd problem today. I have two partitions on my PowerBook's internal hard drive, the main one, and a smaller one that I boot into to run maintenance jobs on the main partition. The main partition is running 10.5.2 and the maintenance partition is running 10.4.8. When in the maintenance partition, I noticed that Spotlight was indexing, so I stopped it. I was in the maintenance partition to try to run DiskWarrior on the main partition, but it kept giving me a "Disk in Use" error, so I was never able to even start this. After rebooting to the main 10.5.2 partition, however, I was unable to connect to my home wireless network. I had to retype the network name and password. After that, I started being asked for passwords for things that I knew were stored in my Keychain. I looked in Keychain, and the passwords are still there; it seems that the connection between the apps and Keychain are broken somehow. Does anyone know what might have happened, and if so, if there's a quick fix to get things back to where they were before? I don't have a problem with lost passwords, as I have them all recorded in a safe location, but life would be easier if my PowerBook could resume remembering all of the passwords that it remembered before today.
    Thanks!
    Ken

Whether you believe it or not, I routinely booted between Tiger and Leopard for over sixteen months (beta-tester) and never saw your problem, but then I disabled indexing on all bootable volumes that weren't running Leopard, using the *mdutil -i off* command. Keychains were the same on all boot volumes because I routinely copied them from the current boot volume to the others before switching. Ditto with Safari stuff.

  • RE: Video problems after disconnecting DVI to VGA adaptor...

I was playing a game (C&C Generals) the other day on Vista with an external monitor connected via the DVI to VGA adaptor. During the game, I decided to move my MBP so I disconnected the adaptor. The screen started flickering and I had to reset the MBP. After resetting, I tried to re-launch the game, but an error popped up saying that I don't have DirectX 8.1 or greater (actually, I have DirectX 10) or don't have a supported video card (I have Nvidia 8600 GT). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Bootcamp drivers and resetting my PRAM, to no avail. Any ideas? I tested my MBP on other games (e.g. Company of Heroes) and it works fine -- the only time the video card gives me trouble is when I try to launch C&C Generals!
    Thanks for any help!

Why was this port changed to something that does not work when the previous on worked so perfectly just plug and play????????
Yes blaming your MBP is your first step, but completely illogical. Have you checked the System Preferences>Display? Have you set it up correctly?
Plug and Play, does not mean that an ancient monitor (anything on VGA is several generations ago) will automatically take over your MBP to create the perfect profile. You need to fix things.

  • Nvidia TV out problem after upgrade [solved]

I upgraded my system today after a long drought.  I'm running a mythtv system on a CRT tv.  There is an LCD monitor on the system.
I couldn't get X to work, as it couldn't find my mouse (or apparently keyboard) since the system appeared frozen after I started X.  I found information that, if I understood it correctly, seemed to indicate that xorg.conf is no longer needed and hal should be installed to run things.  I put hal in my rc.conf, rebooted, and now I have a working X configuration running gnome.
My TV is another matter.  Typically during boot up the picture on the TV rolls vertically until I start X, then it stabilizes.  Now, it is continuing to roll and is in black and white.  I haven't found anything to help me figure this one out, so I thought I'd ask while I continue to look.

Duh, basic Arch-ness.  If the default doesn't work, build your own!  I rebuilt an xorg.conf file with info from my old one that wouldn't work, but based on the new one generated from hwd -x.
Seems to work fine so far.
