Video problems after RAM upgrade

I recently upgraded my ram from 1GB to 2GB DDR2 667 MHz and everything looks fine with regards to recognizing the RAM and starting up. However, I recently started to notice some video problems in certain areas. For example, my VLC player has problems playing back video now, and it shows a black screen for the video for some avi files but plays back the audio fine. Some games, like Plants vs Zombies, play audio and not the video as well. Has anyone else had this problem?

Don't know anything about 4AllMemory.  But they do indeed have a small Mac section listed.  Hard to tell if the memory listed is specifically for your model.  Also not obvious if they have lifetime warrantees too.
As for OWC's page.  Yes, that 4GB selection, which if you clicked on it would take you here, is memory that will work on your 3,1.  The only real difference between it and the one listed below it for a few dollars more is that the latency of the ram.  You probably woudn't even notice the difference (cas 4 vs. cas 5).

  • Display problem after RAM Upgrade to MS6712

    Hi there,
after a RAM upgrade (512mb to 3GB) my PC has developed a display problem. The graphics are slow / rippled and video playback is very poor. In device manager no "display adapters" are present and there is also an error mesage referring to the VIA CPU to AGP2/AGP3.0 controller not having enough free resources to run due to a conflisct with VGAsave? I've downloaded the latest VIA chipset drivers to no effect?
System info: MS6712 MB, AMD Athlon 1.25GHZ, XP SP3.0

    OK, here's the info on my PSU;
    It's a Powerman FSP250-60GTU(PF). Input: 230V - 5A, 50Hz. Max Output: 250W
While I had the case open I took out 2 of the RAM modules and without making any other changes everything appeared to work fine with just the 1GB, so I tried putting 1 more back in to take it to 2GB and again all seems fine? Does this indeed point to my PSU then? If so and it works fine with 2GB should I be thankfull for a 512mb to 2GB upgrade and send the 3rd module back to Crucial??
Before I posted this thread I did run a memtest from Memtest86+ with all three modules installed and it came up with NO problems?
Re Henry's post, I searched using the format of the part no on the RAM modules themselves i.e. M368L2923FLN-CB3 and it took me here:
    http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/productListNonflexTable.do?fmly_id=118&sht_id=1
Other info on printed the modules themselves: 1GB DDR PC2700 CL2.5
According to Everest my CPU temp (with 2GB installed) is: 43 degrees (MOBO 30 degrees and HD 42 degrees) - do these seem normal?

  • K7 Delta 2 Nforce2 boot problem after ram upgrade

Ill start out with the stats of the system
    Delta 2 w/ DDR-400 Ultra support
    Althlon XP 2100+ 266fsb cpu
512 Mb Mushkin High Perf Level II 2-2-2 Ram
80 GB IBM Deskstar HD 7200RPM
    30 GB Maxtor HD 7200RPM
    Radeon 9700 Pro
    SB Live 5.1 Soundcard
Standard 400W power supply, all voltages were normal
So here is the issue, this system was running perfectly until i purchased two more sticks of mushkin ram, 2x256 mb ram sticks of Hi Perf Level II 2-2-2 ram, i placed this in the dual channled slots.  Machine then restarted and i got into BIOS where i set the clock to 166 to obtain my 333 fsb for the RAM, and selected the high performance timings.  This is when disaster happened, upon saving to cmos, nothing will work now, no bios screen, no beep errors, just the two green lights on bottom, and red lights on top of the MSI s bracket.  I have swapped out the ram, and cleared the CMOS, same thing, im all out of ideas, im going to try swapping the CPUs, but how could there be anything wrong with the CPU, i know all this stuff worked on the system.  Any Ideas?

First Refer to your manual to make sure I have this right as I am going from memory.
As Wonkonoby suggests, the J10 jumper can be set to safe mode 100mhz for the CPU FSB.
Then remove the jumper block from J11, this will set the CPU Frequency to 100mhz.
These settings will usually help in recovering from bad settings in the BIOS or an overclock gone awry.
You may have to Clear the CMOS with JBAT1 Jumper, but please make sure you DO NOT start your PC with the JBAT1 jumper in the clear CMOS postition! You will probably bork your motherboard!
    To clarify:
Please unplug the power supply from the power outlet or remove the power plug from the back of the unit.
Then, press the power button to purge any remaining power that is in the capacitors in the power supply. (sometimes you will notice the fans spin for a millisecond when you do this)
    Set Jumpers J10 & 11 as described.
Clear CMOS by moving the JBAT1 Jumper to the "CLEAR" CMOS position for a few minutes. (it's often recommended to remove the battery after moving the jumper to the "CLEAR" position and waiting a few minutes befor replacing it and then replacing the battery and moving the Jumper back to the "KEEP" position)
Thats it, you should be able to start your PC and enter the BIOS. Make sure you set the jumpers J10 and J11 back to where they were and then enter all your BIOS settings again but this time be careful about timings.
If that does not work then you have a more serious problem.

  • Problems after RAM upgrade

I just installed 2 * 1Gig Kingmax DDR400 (PC 3200) into my imac. Replacing the 2 * 512Mb sticks that were installed when it shipped.
Since installing (about 3 hours ago) i have had 5 programs quit while not being used (activity monitor counting for 3 of those)
Then, the system froze and the fan started going crazy. ive never heard it spin that fast since i bought the system. I couldn't even get the mouse to move. Once i shut the system down (holding the power button down) and rebooted the system has run fine, though its only been 10 minutes.
Is it the ram? should i be taking it back? from what i have found the kingmax ram should be fine for my imac.
    any thoughts?

I will try that now. Thanks.
I have tried the test that comes on the install CD, and after an hour or so it came back as everything being Okay.
I have had the system crash about once every week. So I have decided that the time it is saving me is worth the reboot time. :/ Dosent look good when people are around tho. (But i manage, quite successfully IMHO, to blame KingMax).
    I will report back soon.

    Hi,
Just to help the folks out here.
    In my case,
Inspite of going through several valid NOTES & program, my issue didnt resolve (you reply was pretty accurate - but dint help me :-)).
I have resolved the issue by adjusting the PSA table for the same.
    Procedure:
Take the psa name  --> go to table rstsods --> find the ODSNAME_TECH name for the relevant psa  --> se38 t.code --> enter ODSNAME_TECH and click on 'adjust & activate database table' (make sure you have selected 'save data' radio button.
Just in case anyone who come across this problem, can do the above steps.
    Regards,
    Dubbu.

I installed iOS 5.0.1 on my Iphone 3GS. I never can not write in my calendar. Anyone else having this problem after their upgrade?

I was going to suggest - Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings, but if you are restoring to factory settings, that should restore the settings back to factory defaults. But if you are restoring from a backup, after restoring to factory settings, try resetting all of the settings and see if that fixes it.
It might be something in your backup.

  • I have a mac, would like to upgrade to mountain lion from mac os x, anybody experienced any problems after this upgrade, thanks

i have a mac, would like to upgrade to mountain lion from mac os x, anybody experienced any problems after this upgrade, thanks

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) model number 5,1 or higher
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) model number 2,1 or higher
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Xserve (Early 2009) model number 3,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
If you can/do upgrade, I recommend you make a copy of the installer and move it out of your Applications folder. The installer self-destructs. The copy will keep you from having to download the installer again.  You can make a bootable DVD/USB stick to install using this free program.
Bootable Drive DVD or USB Flash Drive – Lion Diskmaker
Our 2 computers haven't experienced any significant problems, even though others have. I find it much better than 10.7 Lion, which I used for a week before reverting to 10.6.8
Mavericks is supposed to be released this fall, so you may want to wait.

pull the ram, problem goes away? - bad ram

did you get it from a good source - Crucial.com is my favorite, OWC is popular too - both have lifetime warranty

  • IMac Still Has Video Problems after Upgrade

I did the firmware and software upgrade to my iMac, which was supposed to fix the video problem, however the problem continues. I am using OS 10.4.11. My computer never "froze" however the screen went haywire. I would have to do a soft restart (if I could find the restart dropdown window) or I would have to do a hard restart. Now I can do a screen refresh to do a soft restart.
Is Apple aware the these Intel iMacs are a POS? I use it for 3D design and I can't work more than 10 minutes before my screen starts going wacko. I've used Macs since 1985 and this is the first POS Mac i've owned. I don't want to have to get another computer, I can't afford it.
Any others out there with the same problem? Any solutions?
    Thanks

I like AppleCare, as you get three years of that unlimited phone support. I know many consider it just another extended warranty, but note it can be legitimately purchased at a discount.
Amazon, retail computer stores, also a number of sellers abound online and on eBay, and a price mentioned by someone else on here two years ago that hasn't changed since then - check out L. A. Computer Company, online - you might be surprised!
(I have no affiliation with them.)

  • Boot problem 10.4.11 after RAM upgrade of PowerPC G3

My PowerPC G3 won't boot. Not sure what to try next.
I tried to replace my RAM with four 256mb sticks. Previously I had four 128mb sticks of PC100. At some point in the install I received the error of a grey screen that stated (in several languages) I needed to press the start button? My power button would not shut down the computer. I wind up with a blue screen and the mouse cursor.Since then, the OS will not load. At start up, I get the Grey Apple with the twirley status icon for several minutes; then a blue screen with the twirley for several minutes. Then just the blue screen, with my mouse cursor.

The gray screen in several languages indicates you had a kernel panic. Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, kbd & mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
I suspect you may have some bad RAM. Where did you get the RAM? Have you tried reinstalling the old RAM? Some recommend that you do a CUDA reset when you install new RAM. Another thing to try is to install just one 256MB module. If that doesn't work, remove & install a second module.
     Cheers, Tom

  • MacBook not booting after RAM upgrade

I'm sorry if the case has been already posted.
Yesterday I took my MacBook Alu unibody late 2008 to a RAM upgrade (from 2 to 4gigs) to an offical Mac Reseller. They installed it and showed me that the system loads properly and recognized the new RAM.
I took it home, started working on After Effects and Photoshop and when i wanted to check a video on Quicktime, this program refused to boot.
Then photoshop freeze and after effects did so. I quited all aplications and restarted. On restart after the 'bong' i've got the grey screen white an apple logo and a loading bar underneath, that was it, it never finished loading but shutting down.
After the 2nd try the computer gave me the BAD RAM alarm signal right before the start button was pressed and nothing more. I just managed to start it ONCE on safe mode, but this one also freezed and colapsed.
Today i didn't get the BAD ram alarm but the grey screen and loading bar after shutting down.
I took it back to the reseler, the shop boss who did the upgrade wasn't there , the guys on the morning shift placed the old RAM back resulting the same. So they told me it's a software problem, not hardware and might be caused by a failed firmware update or something i did wrong and since i was showed that the system booted after the upgrade i can't complain or argue that they did somethiing wrong.
So basically the want 80euros to check what's wrong with my computer plus the 120 i already payed them for a RAM that doesn't work and of course the repair cost of the computer.
On monday i'll go to talk to the boss, what do you guys recomend me to tell him? i'm frustrated that the guys there treat me like if i broke my computer for beeing stupid and wanted to get it fixed for free, when it clearly broke after they did something wrong on it!
    please advice me!
    thanks!

What brand is the RAM? From what you said, it is obvious that the RAM is at fault. I would simply tell them that it is not compatible and return the RAM.
Check the System Profiler to see what it says about the RAM (Apple Logo - About this Mac - More Info) and run this application to test the RAM:
    http://www.memtestosx.org/joomla/index.php
If either shows any errors, print out the results and take them with you to the store.

  • Avoid overclock after ram upgrade on MBP late 2009

Hi guys, I'm from italy so please accept my poor english.
    The problem is the following:
I installed a couple of 4gb ram 1066 (together with a 256 SSD) and all works fine but after the upgrade the computer heats very easly.
It reaches temperatures of 70-80° (celsius) if cpu usage goes over 50-60%.
I managed it with smc-fan-control, even if it is not namely correct.
Today I was editing a video in iMovie and I recognised that in activity monitor the cpu usage wass telling 170% with respect to iMoive process.
    Is it possible???
iStat pro always tells me max 100%, but probably it's wrong because if really an overclock occured it explains my problems of temperatures after the upgrade.
Moreover, I never see a RAM usage more than a couple of Gb, so it seems that the ram is recognised, but not used properly!!
Running iBench the ram seemed to be used a lot, well above 6Gb.
    Please help me

No overclocking going on. You have a dual core cpu which can have 200% cpu activity, 100% for each core. 100 + 100 % equals 200%.
Yes doing video editing put a stain on the system and it will heat up. Since your mac is a few years old it might have some dust build up in the fans or heatsink cooling fins. Use some compressed air to blow them out.

  • Toshiba 32TL838: video flickering after fw upgrade in menus, using HDMI input

    Hi,
yesterday I upgraded my 32TL838's firmware to version 6.4.0Y.1 / 94.6.27.8 using the network upgrade feature.
After the upgrade I reset the TV to start over with factory settings.
During the quick setup after the reset I noticed a very poor video quality. The whole image flickered, had a ghost effect and looked interlaced. The menus were almost unreadable.
After completing the setup the TV switched to normal TV mode (DTV cable) and at least the tv picture looked quite normal. While cable TV input is selected, I can also open menus like before, they're displayed correctly.
But as soon as I switch to HDMI input, the picture is getting nuts again, just as during the initial setup, including the TV's menu overlays. Sometimes it's getting stable for maybe 30 seconds but then it's crippled again.
Some words about my setup: the TV uses only HDMI input 1 and the cable input, nothing else is connected.
The HDMI input links to an Onkyo TX-SR508 AV receiver that is being fed by a Fantec 3DS4600 media player and BDP-S373 BluRay player.
Because I expect the what-about-your-HDMI-cabling question, I exchanged the HDMI cables but as expected that did not help at all.
At least I seem to be successful in working around the problem when using the Fantec player.
Before I upgraded the firmware I was able to use the player with 1080p/60Hz and the player was setup accordingly.
Now I switched to 1080p/50Hz and the video picture looks okay again. (However I did only a short test and as I said, sometimes_
the picture is okay for a short time.)
Unfortunately my BluRay player has no menu to change the frequency, so watching BluRay or the online services the player offers, is impossible.
So what can I do now? A firmware downgrade (if that's possible) would be a quick temporary workaround I could accept. But in the medium term I expect Toshiba to restore the features they promoted and for which I paid.
(Youtube stopped working with the old firmware and it looks as if 1080p/60Hz doesn't work anymore with the latest firmware.)
Does anybody know a way to downgrade the firmware using an USB key? I already downloaded the previuos release tl838_853886.bin but I don't have a clou how (and if) it can be installed.
    Thanks for your hints
    belektro

    > Before I upgraded the firmware I was able to use the player with 1080p/60Hz and the player was setup accordingly.
I think you mixed simply the PAL and NTCS settings.
Usually all external players provide an option where you could choose between PAL and NTSC.
NTSC standard is the common one for countries in South / North America and Japan,
The PAL is used in Europe and some countries in Asia.
Both PAL and NTCS support 24p (24 frames per second) but most output for PAL and NTSC use interlaced frames which means that:
    NTSC (60Hz) supports fps 60i or 30p
    PAL (50Hz) generally uses 50i or 25p;
Probably the external player supports PAL settings and its set to 50Hz and therefore its play properly using the 1080/50Hz.

  • Mac mini won't boot after RAM upgrade.

Tried installing new RAM in my Mac Mini, 512MB stock to 2GB of Crucial. Followed the directions to a T, grounded myself the whole time.
    Things I've tried so far:
    1. Resetting the PRAM, no luck.
    2. Holding option at start-up, shows no icon.
    3. Holding shift, no luck.
    4. Holding X, nothing.
How do I get it to accept a CD if it won't boot?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You clearly have a problem, but you don't describe exactly what that is other than that your mini won't boot after the upgrade. What happens when it starts up? Does it attempt to start and hang up on the grey or blue screens, or does it start beeping at you almost immediately after you try and start it up, and also flash the power light?
If the former, then you may have dislodged a connector while working inside the system, in which case opening it up and checking that everything is firmly connected would be the first thing to do. If the latter, then the beeping/light flashing is the system telling you it has failed the power-on self test and the pattern of beeps/lights indicates why. In your case likely the system can't find workable memory. In that instance, opening the system and ensuring that the RAM is firmly and fully seated would be a good step, and if the mini continues to fail, then replacing the new RAM with the original to test that the system will then start.
It is not likely that anything had damaged your MacOS install in the process of upgrading, thus normally no reason to need to boot to CD as a result of a RAM issue.
