Video quality of some iTunes videos is BAD

I've seen several articles around the net about older videos having been up-converted to be the new 640 x 480 size but when I downloaded episode one of Battlestar Galactica, Season 3 I was really disappointed to find that it was obviously up-converted as the quality was terrible! episode 2 looks great. What gives iTunes??

  • Video quality terrible in iTunes 11??

The playback for videos is awful in iTunes 11. I tried to watch music videos that I have purchased and they are no where near as sharp as they were when I watched them in other versions of iTunes. For some reason, the quality is just as poor when I try to watch in Quicktime as well, however these are videos I purchased from the iTunes store...

I've had video syncing problems (not with music though) when I updated my iPhone 4s to the new IOS 7, but I finally figured it out. What I did was I plugged my 4s in to my computer (Windows 7, 64-bit), then opened iTune (11.1.3.8), clicked on my iPhone tab on the upper right, under "Summary" put a 'check' in the Manually sync music & videos.
Looking at the picture above, notice the: Movies, Music Videos, and  Home Videos; are now available. Before this method, these three wasn't there. These are all in the original Videos app for the iPhone. I hope this help you guys too.

  • Poor video quality in some recycled clips

We're throwing a high school graduation open house for one of my sons tonight.  I grabbed some of the old DVDs I've made over the years of his sports and music achievements to put together a highlight DVD to have running throughout the evening.  I converted VOB files to MPG and imported into CS4 and exported to Encore to burn.  I  have all the original DV tapes but no time to work with them by this evening.
On the resulting DVD some of the clips are poor quality.  Some  are fine, but some come out looking a little grainy or like they're running just a little too fast or something.  It's just enough that you kind of look at it and think 'what's wrong with that?'.  The problem seems to be most noticeable  in clips with the fastest motion.  Two clips of his 4x100m Relay team are the most obvious.  It almost looks like someone is fast-forwarding slightly.  (All the clips may suffer from the same problem but it's just not noticeable in clips  with less motion. ?)
Any ideas how I can fix this from within Premiere Pro or Encore?  (Anything more than that and I probably don't have time to get a new DVD out by 6:00pm this evening.)
    Thanks!
    Dan

    Here's a couple screenshots:
Also note that you can select your clip(s) in the Project window/bin, right-click and select Interpret Footage, and then under the Field Order options, change it from Use Field Order from File: (it should say upper field first here) to Conform to: Lower Field First. Now that I think of it, this is easier and makes more sense.

  • Poor sound quality on some iTunes songs

Downloaded some songs from iTunes and realized a really poor sound quality on some files.
The worst example is "Precious" from "Depeche Mode" (Album version). It seems to me that the AAC file is encoded at a much too high level, so its overdriven and distorted.
If i burn the song to CD and than analyze the track in WaveLab it is obvious that the song was encoded with a level more than 6dB over the usual level and i can see a lot of clippings.
Downloaded another song of another band that i allready have on CD, just to compare... and this song was much better. Even this was 3dB over the original CD level (and the song on CD had a peak level reserve of only 0.1dB), but while listening that song i heared no negative effects...
So from my point of view iTunes is not really an acceptable offer if i can't rely on a minimum sound quality of the songs that i pay for!
    So, the question is:
Is this normal or is the "Depeche Mode" album only one rare bad example???

    Yes, of cause, tried all.
EQ off, or EQ with all sliders a little below 0dB.
With my tests i saw no effect of the EQ to the CD burning quality.
Only if i change the CD burning options (in german "Lautstärke anpassen", something like "adapt volume" or so), than i get a CD that has the same bad quality, only at a lower volume.
The same distorted and overdriven sound with clippings at a lower level (peak -12dB).
What if it's really a bad file?
    Do they fix such files?
Will i have a chance to download it again? (without paying another time?)

  • Video quality poor under iTunes 10

I have a MacBook Pro running 10.5.8 and I downloaded and installed iTunes 10 just yesterday (Sept 1). Now videos that I purchased as recently as a couple of days ago have vertical distortion lines. I've seen that kind of distortion before, though never on a Mac and it's usually due to some sort of resolution mismatch, but that would be hardware whereas I'm pretty confident that this issue is related to iTunes 10.
Any ideas? Does anyone know if 10.1 is just around the corner?
    Thanks,
    Rob

I'm having the exact same problem. Watched a movie last night on iTunes 9, and it was just fine. Upgraded this morning, and watched an HD podcast I down loaded after the upgrade. It was horrid. Heavy pixelation and I had the same experience that pixelation only went away on mouse-over. I was curious and opened the movie I watched last night, the quality has dramatically decreased. Same with all previously purchased SD and HD content. I'll make no more purchases until this is fixed. Great job when one of the new features being hyped is HD TV rental.

  • Can't synch video files, video podcasts or convert iTunes video to iPod vid

I don't know what has changed recently - I don't recall a new version of iTunes being installed but I am on iTunes 9.1.0.79 under WindowsXP.
I am no longer able to synch video podcasts which have been downloaded via Juice and video from iTunes-subscribed podcasts which were both in the right format and synching happily before whatever it was that changed, changed.
In addition, I cannot right-click and convert video to iPod format - that option isn't there. It has either gone (boo) or the video IS in iPod format in which case why isn't it synchcronising?
I've spent many hours now trying to work out what's changed, gone wrong, what kind of settings need to be changed to get back to where I was.
    HALP!

I'm having the same issues! I used to be able to convert video, but that option is no lnoger there. My video is in a Quicktime format(which I thought was supposed to be compatible with itunes anyway) and it won't play.
And since when aren't you allowed to email customer support?? They want me to pay a min of $29 to have an analyst call me at my convenience? Bunch of greedy bastards!

  • Very poor video quality after transcoding in Adobe Encore CS5.1

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I have very poor video quality after transcoding the video file (MPEG) in  Adobe Encore CS5.1. Below you see my used settings in my filmproject.
The problem exists after transcoding in Adobe Encore CS5.1. I checked all steps and found out that there is no problem until transcoding. My exported file  in MPEG has very good video and audio quality.
    Facts:
    1. Camcorder: Panasonic AG-AC160AEJ
Operating System : Windows 7, 64 Bit, Ultimate edition
    Source files: MTS files
    Recording settings (clip settings):
    Type: MPEG Movie
    Image Size: 1920 x 1080
    Frame Rate: 25,00
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - compressed - Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1,0
    2. Sequence settings in Premiere Pro
Sequence was created from Clip directly with settings above.
    3. Exporting settings in Adobe Premiere Pro:
Match sequence settings was activated. Now other changes were set.
    4. Exported File:
    Video
    Image Size: 1920 x 1080
    Data Transfer Rate: 25920 kBit / s
    Frame rate: 25
    Audio:
    Bit rate: 384 kBit / s
    Channels: 2 (stereo)
    Frequence: 48 kHz
    5. Transcoding settings in Adobe Encore:
I used different transcoding settings such as automatic DVD Transcoding, CBR and VBR.I also set “use maximum render quality”. But all results were always the same: very poor quality.
Why does the encore transcoding cause such bad video quality?
How can I solve this problem?
    Please help me soon.
    Best regards.

    Hi Ann,
    1) I did not only „Automatic (based on source)“ options in my tests, but also many other customized options.
The results are very poor. I have done a new test with the following settings. The result is also poor:
    Download link: http://www.klavierlehrer-bayern.de/download/test_mpeg2dvd_1.m2v
    Export Settings:
    Format: MPEG2-DVD
    Preset: Custom
Codec: MainConcept MPEG Video, Quality: 5
    Frame Rate: 25 fps
    Field Order: Upper
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Automatic (based on source)
    Render at Maximum Rate: [active]
    Bitrate Encoding: VBR, 2 pass
    Minimum Bitrate (Mbps): 5
    Target Bitrate (Mbps): 9
    Maximum Bitrate (Mbps): 9
    GOP Settings
    M Frames: 4
    N Frames: 12
    Use Maximum Render Quality: [active]
    Multiplexer: None
    2) Why shouldn’t I use the “Match Sequence Settings” in exporting? Because of the big output file size?
I used it and the results are very good as I expected:
    Download link: http://www.klavierlehrer-bayern.de/download/test_MatchSequenceSettings.mpeg
    Export Settings
    Match Sequence Settings [selected]
    1920 x 1080, 25 fps, Upper, Quality 50
    User Maximum Render Quality: [active]
    3) I tried also Dynamic Link in PremierePro (to Encore).
    The results are also poor.
    4) I will test also LagarithLoslessCodec and frameserving +DGMPGDec. But the video is vertical long drawn-ot.
I think I did not use it correctly.

  • Video quality of Nano

Got the new Nano and I am underwhelmed with the video quality of the new video camera. I have a mid priced Nikon Cool Pix camera that takes much better video.
Nano users, how is your video quality? Mine certainly doesn't look like the video clips on the Apple site that are advertised for the Nano. Maybe I am doing something wrong or my Nano is not up to spec?
    Thanks.

As with ANY camera, you have to hold it steady to get sharp video. IMHO, the 5G is NOT a camera. It just happens to have a video camera built-in for those times when you need a video camera, but you left your "A" camera home.
I have a 42" HD TV at home that does a better job watching movie than my Nano, but once again, the Nano video playback is for when I'm on the move.
I just don't understand why all you critics need to tear down the Nano (mainly a audio player, the IP mainly a phone, the IT because it doesn't have all the goodies the IP has, etc).
I like my Apple tech toys for what they do.

  • Opera Mini Video Quality

    Hi All,
I use a BB 9360 Curve 3G and at times I use Opera Mini which is an amazing browser however when I watch youtube videos on it the quality of the video is pathetic as compared to the video quality when I stream videos on the BIS browser??
Please suggest if there's any way to enhance the youtube video experience while streaming them from Opera Mini???
Or if the Bolt browser is better and if compatiable with BB 9360 Curve 3G then can someone please provide me the link to directly download it to my Blackberry. I will be really grateful for that??
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi All,
No response or suggestions from anyone. Please advise.

  • ITunes movies poor video quality (very pixelated)

Just bought a 5th gen nano, and synced it with some videos we bought on iTunes. The videos play but they are extremely pixelated. I have tested it on a few movies, and they are all the same. They are just SD movies or TV shows. Even our kids cartoons are poor quality.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Still bad video quality

even is catalyst cs 5.5 two of my problems do not resolve.
bad video quality in fullscreen. i have some videos for offline view (768x576 @ 2600 kbps) but still fullscreen view is messed up, all blocky, not proper video interpolation. in vlc or any other player the flv file looks fine!
the videos also have a 4:3 ratio and show white borders in fullscreen on a 16:9 screen in letterbox, how can make the borders black?
    is there any solution?

    Hi
    as example
Creating a PAL movie in iMovie HD 6 then import this into a NTSC iDVD project
    • Works but with a losy quality
I do use JESDeinterlacer3.2.2 and let this do the PAL to NTSC conversion
Now burned as an NTSC iDVD project
    • Best result possibly without buying PRO-applications for $$$$$$$
This way should work the other way around too.
Most modern PAL DVD-players can playback NTSC (if TV is old in Bl/W)
Most modern NTSC DVD-players can't playback PAL
If playbacked on a Mac PAL or NTSC is of no interest.

  • Bad video quality with AMS and Citrix

Some clients connects to our network with vpn Citrix and get the screen presentet from Citrix.
The video quality is bad, choppy and sound out of sync.
Is it possible to set a specific quality for clients connecting with Citrix in AMS?
Do you have a best practice when using Citrix.

    Hi Drago
It is very bad situation. Toshiba with every notebook must offer functioning product and because of that offer tested drivers. Those drivers are adapted for each notebook model and also have protecting function. That means the graphic card will not be forced to run on the highest level.
As you can see with original driver you have problems playing some games. For me it is nothing unusual for mobile computers. Problem is that every modified driver is not supported and tested by notebook manufacturer. I recommend you to use tested Toshiba driver. At the end maybe you must make compromise between gaming and watching movies.
By the way: are original DVD movies also so bad while you use preinstalled WinDVD?

  • Hello can some please help I am trying to watch my HBO go on my apple tv I have sound not picture. I can watch my iTunes videos and youtube so I know it works. it is working

Hello can some please help I am trying to watch my HBO go on my apple tv I have sound no picture. I can watch my iTunes videos and youtube on my airplay with my ipad and everything is updated so I know it works. But not on HBO go, Max go, showtime go.

What you want to do does not work with an iPd running iOS 5. See the screenshot.
The latest update for HBO GO does allow for AirPlay on Apple TV - sound and video - but only on devices running iOS 6 and Apple TV running 5.1.1 or later - according to the app description.

  • Itunes video quality, my impressions...

When I heard Apple announce that the itunes site would offer selected tv shows for download, I was pretty excited. So today I downloaded the "Desparate Housewives" pilot for $1.99. I was impressed with the ~30min download and the slick looking itunes interface.
I was not impressed by the proprietary *.M4V file format. The media player format is clunky, without obvious controls available when in full screen mode. itunes crashed twice when I was trying to toggle between the preview screen and full screen. I actually had to ctrlaltdel the application.
My biggest problem, though, was video quality. The file was 1/3 smaller than most bittorent tv, and it shows in the quality. When I played the file on my HDTV, the quality was not acceptable. Edges were blocky and the audio was sub-par.
Apple, you are on the edge of something great. People will download TV for a fee, if your servers are fast, the price is right, the format is convenient and the quality is good. In my opinion you are halfway there, and no one else is even close.
If you were to release your shows in HD format and have a reasonable media playback option (read as: make a deal with DIVX), I would accept DRM limitations and would get all my shows on itunes. $1.99 seems a bit high for a low definition file that can only be played on a proprietary and clunky player. Especially when there are free sources on the net offering the same shows in full HD with 5.1surround for free.

    Agreed.
I just purchased my first legal download (as well as QT Pro), only to be sorely disapointed with the file I downloaded. As my laptop runs at 1280x800 (and I grabbed BSGalactica), I was horrified of the video I saw.
How the heck am I supposed to put that up on a 40' plasma screen?
I'd pay a little more (not much), for HD video. Until then, I won't purchase another video.

  • Bad video quality of final product when viewing on computer in full screen

It looks like a picture does when you blow it up and it's a low quality image. Everything I'm reading says the problem would be with the video capture...but I have the same bad quality when I'm viewing the menu! Around all the text on the menu, it's fuzzy and same with my video on the menu. So are my video clips in the movie itself.
I have tried playing it on Windows Media Player, the apple DVD program, and WinDVD and I get the same problem when I view it on full screen.
I assume my family will mostly be playing it on a TV. Do you think it will play properly or worse on a TV? I don't actually have a DVD player myself to test it out. Any suggestions on why this could be happening?
    Thanks!

when I started using iDVD, one of the hardest adjustments for me to make was video quality on TV screen vs on computer screen. (I am used to satellite to S-Video TV and HD screens on my computer.)
My camera it a miniDV, and playback via SVideo to an Svideo TV screen is awesome.
I was sorely disappointed when I played the same tape back on the computer. It was grainy/fuzzy, etc. Same with the DVD I made.
But when I played the DVD back on the TV, the image quality was the same as when I connected the camera to the TV - crisp, sharp, video and text.
I've since burned numerous DVDs, and the result is always the same - blah on the computer, sharp on the TV.
As someone else in this thread stated, the average TV is low-res compared to the computer screen.
If I recall the spec correctly, standard NTSC is 240 line, SVideo is up to 500 line. HD is 720 line and higher...ergo an NTSC source is roughly 1/2 the resolution of the typical CPU screen, or 1/3 the resolution of low end HD screens. So yes, NTSC output on your computer screen will always be fuzzy compared to your TV screen.
I think you will likely be very pleased with the DVD when you playback on your TV.
