Video quality when playing a movie

Hi there
my home theatre set up with mac mini (latest os, latest QT pro, 1GB ram) is pretty swell. One thing that is bugging me is that when watching DVD using front row, the player skip a few frames every 20-30 secondes. I first thought it was a Netflix crappy quality DVD thing but it's not. it's doing it regardless of the source of the DVD. old or new.
Doesn't do it when using the dvd player app.
any ideas? suggestion? setting changes?
thank you in advance.
cheers

Okay, here goes... Log back into your main account. Drag your "Preferences" folder from this location out to the Desktop:
<Macintosh HD>/Users/<your user name>/Library/Preferences
Then log out and log back in. Of course, everything will be reset to the defaults and a brand new "Preferences" folder will be created in your user's Library folder. Make sure your DVD Player application is running smoothly. Then, you can start to drag, one, two or three at a time, your preferences from the folder on your Desktop to the new one in the Library folder.
For example, the preference file that sets your Dock items was probably not the one causing the trouble, you might move that one back in first. It's called "com.apple.dock.plist". (You might need to drag the new one to the Trash before you can drag the old one into the new Preferences folder.) Then log out and log back in and make sure things are still running smoothly. This way, you may be able to discover exactly which file was causing the trouble.
Or you can just put all your applications back in the Dock, select your Desktop picture and re-build all your preferences from scratch. Doing this will not affect the music in your iTunes or your pictures in iPhoto.

  • Bad quality when play mov or mp4

I want to play mov or mp4 by quicktime. In my laptop it play well but in my another computer the quality for video is very bad!
Following is the features of that computer:
    Windows XP Pro SP2
    VIA C7 Processor 1500MHZ 512M RAM
Graphics card: VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP
I upload the screen snapshot of this problem on my blog. Please look at the following url:
    http://apolloxiao.blogspot.com/2009/11/bad-quality-when-play-mov-by-quicktime.ht ml
    Thank you very much!

My first thought was a video card driver because that will produce the streaks across the screen but usually more extreme.
Then it could be hardware related, do you know the history of the computer, as to any recent changes?
I don't really have a solution and don't want to string you along. But I swap around hardware, and me, I'd pull the video card out and make sure it's seated properly in the AGP or PCI slot on the motherboard. If it's not a on-board video card.
You seem to be showing a dual monitor set-up? If so wouldn't the primary be on the right?

  • 720P 30 H.264 videos stutter when played back on Windows

720P 30 H.264 videos stutter when played back on Windows
I have an interesting problem that I am hoping someone can help me with.
I have several short videos (2-4 minutes) in 1080i HDV that I have edited in FCP. When output to 720P 30 H.264 in Compressor at either 10 or 6 MB they look just drop dead gorgeous when played back on either of my dual processor Macs.
However when played back on a Windows machine with QuickTime 7, they stutter to the point that playback locks up. This happens on 1.5 GHz to 3.2 GHz P4 class machines with 512 MB to 1 GB of RAM and 64 to 128 MB video cards. On the 3.2 GHz P4, the processor utilization peaks at 100%. The interesting thing is that all of these same Windows machines have no problem playing back 720p 24 trailers at 6 MB.
    Thanks all.

First a correction. I am using the latest version of FCP – 5.
Regarding the encoding, I have tried going from native HDV MPEG-2 to H.264 at 720P from 10 to 4 MB at 24, 30 and 29.97. The Mac seems to play everything back very well, but most PCs (the latest IBM T 40 – 43 series laptops) a couple of Dell desk tops (2.6 GHZ with 64 and 128 MB graphic cards) and a 3.2 GHz Shuttle PC with a 128 MB graphic card (that we routinely use to decode four MPEG-4, 4CIF images simultaneously and display on a 42” ED Plasma) choke/stutter to varying degrees with processor utilization hitting 100%.
So, the real issue here is what is the difference between a 720p trailer that I can download from Apple and what I can output using Compressor 2 at a similar data rate – other than the frame rate?
And why does the Compressor output stutter on most PCs?

  • No video when playing QuickTime MOV file in iTunes

I received a QuickTime MOV file from a business associate who transferred it from his Canon Vixia HF10 camcorder to his Mac. When I load up the file in iTunes on my Win XP machine, it will play back the audio, but there is no video. When I try to play it back in QuickTime, a window comes up telling me that additional software is needed. When I click the button to go download the software, a browser window comes up listing about 15 different products -- with no indication of which if any will solve the problem. I don't know for certain that any of them will, and I don't have time to download 15 products to test each one. Is there not a more simple way to find out what I need and where to download it? Alternatively, is there a way to convert this file to a friendlier format? This is video of a business event that we need to edit for distribution.

Thanks. That explains it. The person who made the .wmv file says it was made with Camtasia Studio. Do you have any idea what he might have done for it to choose this MSS2 codec over something more universally compatible?
Camtasia is a screen capture application for Windows (like Snapz Pro for mac). We use it here, it works quite well but you get WMV files and tough darts, I guess if you want other than that. I presume real time capture of activity on the screen calls for a codec simple enough to keep up and not drop frames. It does work quite well though.
Play it on WMP in Parallels, Boot Camp, etc.

  • Poor Video quality when importing from SONY DCR-SR100

I am brand new to Mac and iMovie and FCE. One of the reasons I switched to Mac was frustration over poor video output from Windows based video editing programs. When importing video from the SR100 into iMovie and then iDVD, the DVD quality is noticeably poorer than when the camera is connected directly to the Plasma TV. I have been reading these forums and loaded MPEG Streamclip and purchased the Quicktime MPEG2 Download, but I still can't get the video output to look as good as the camera. I obviously have some learning to do, but is there any hope of achieving equal quality output from a DVD as straight from the camera? Is there a good source of information/textbook on this topic? The biggest improvement comes from using the "de-interlace" option in MPEG Streamclip, but the overall quality of the video appears washed out and somewhat blotchy compared to the direct camera footage.

Welcome to the macworld! What imovie does incredibly well is make it easy to create fun and interesting movies. I have used both for several years and only recently with some packages such as adobe premiere elements has the windows world kept up with the mac with respect to ease of use! And even know the packages are still not as easy as imovie. Anyway, with respect to your post and getting the video quality to the best possible output quality using DV material, you are on the right path. The best workflow is to use streamclip and de-interlace prior to editing in imovie. I am not sure if you are doing that yet with your workflow. Yes, its an extra step, but it is well worth it to avoid imovie dropping a field upon export. You can play around with the adjustments to increase contrast, color and et al on the adjustment button. Another option is shooting progressive.
To set expectations, it is second generation footage the minute its imported. However, you should be still getting very good results. FCE gets footage closer to the original footage since it is a true DV editor and uses both fields, but imovie is still preferred by me because of how easy it is to skim, tag and find the material you want then easily do transitions and ken burns for photo's. Fantastic. The way i look at it....watching footage straight from the camera is the worst quality you can get -- It's like listening to your spouse talk and talk and talk and never get to the point until you forget what that point was....editing gets the footage straight to the point....thats quality!

  • PE3 problems with video quality when exporting

I've had this issue when putting DVD movies I own onto my iPod, but because I'm doing a client video now, it's crucial that I get the highest possible video and sound quality out of my project. Because the project I'm working on will be about 45 minutes long, I wanted to avoid working on the whole thing in one file since Premiere begins to refuse to let me do the simplest functions if I have too many clips in the timeline. I've been splitting the project up into segments and my plan is to export them and work with them as single clips when compiling the final project together.
Now here's my problem: I export the segments as HDV 1080 60i files for the highest quality possible, but whenever the exported file is played, these horizontal lines appear on the screen. It's as if the colors are smeared a bit. I honestly don't know how else to describe it. On an iPod, it's only slightly noticeable, but on TV screens like this project will be played on, it'll be too distracting to be acceptable. Can anyone help me out here?

No, all I'm trying to do is export it to the highest quality video so it can be put back into Premiere to be exported again along with several other clips (also exported in the same way). From there, I'll use different software to burn the entire file onto a DVD. No Blu-Ray, no camcorders, not even firewire connections (my computer doesn't have any). It's just going to be used by some 150 families to be viewed on their DVD players once the product is finished.

  • Grey screen in iTunes when playing downloaded movie

Since the update from 10.7.5 Server ed. to 10.9 Mavericks on my Mini-mac I have problems with the playback of downloaded iTunes movies. The only thing I see is a grey screen. This not only is the case for playback with iTunes, but also for playback of DVD's.
When I want to play the movie on my AppleTV (from the iTunes library on the same mini-mac) it's no problem. On my iMac: same. No problem.
So it must be something on the mini that handles the playback of copy-protected material. I think I need to remove something and get it installed anew, probably something Quicktime related.
Is there anyone that can help me out?

  • Reduced video quality when slowed down

Is it normal for the video quality of slowed down footage to be less than the original file.
I think the orignal copied file format was MOV (JVC Camcorder seems to generate .MOV and .MOI files) which imports to iMovie09 fine and good quality.
When I move a clip into the Project Viewer and then want to change the speed of the clip, iMovie converts the clip (not sure what format it converts into). When I slow the clip down (to 25%) the quality is reduced.
Is this something I'm doing wrong or is it the original file type? Also, will my original clip be permanently converted into this other form or will it still be intact (therefore just what is in the Project Viewer is the converted format)?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    bad news..
could be, that adding effect (=any) drops quality by halve..
    often discussed here:
when source is DV, iM09 processes interlaced video only single-field.
I have no source files of SD from non-tape-based devices.. perhaps here, the same quality-drop happens..
if you don't mind, would you like to send me a PM? mail adress down below in green..- you can participate in some.. 'tests'.. no, you don't get hurt, just your camera.. kiddin'!!
there's a simple workaround to avoid this, and there's a free 3rd party tool which - maybe - offers a much better slowmo than iMovie..

  • N8: high definition video slowed when played on PC

Yesterday I shot a 1,5 min film in high definition with my N8 and that's the odd: when played by the N8 player itself it's  absolutely ok, when played by (after uploading to) my desktop's WMP, well has a correct audio but a slower than real  video, so the audio and the video soon become out of synch and the audio ends , of course, some seconds before the video.
    Any  idea?
    Solved!

Ok, self-reply: it's my Desktop not able to play hd movies correctly. Actualy I tried on a fairly "old" Windows XP Pentium 4 desktop.
Played by mi new win 7 laptop it's ok...
@yunez: no, played by the phone itself the hd movies are smooth
As for youtube, I had youtube streams problem with the google youtube app (the stream was faster than the cache could ) till I set wi-fi power saving on off. Since then, it's all ok.

  • AVI Video 'studdering' when played over local wireless network

    Here's the setup...
.AVI movie resides on an external USB drive connected to a white Intel iMac which connects wirelessly to Linksys hub (WRT54G). I then try watching the video on an IBM Thinkpad with Windows Media Player v12. The Thinkpad connects wirelessly to the Linksys hub.
When playing the video, every 7 min or so, it will start to studder for lack of a better way of describing it. I thought it was the anti-virus software on the Thinkpad, which I uninstalled and it didn't really help.
There are no other machines connect to the linksys hub.
This is a bit obscure, but it's driving me nuts!!! Any suggestions?

    Hi Stephen,
You could try your Energy Saver preferences pane on the iMac. If it is set put hard discs to sleep when possible, it may be getting in the way if your iMac is not doing anything else.

  • Video Freezes When Playing Locally

    Hello,
I just purchased a used 2012 Mac Mini i7 2.3GHz which has been upgraded to 16GB of RAM and has a 1TB HD and 500GB SSD, functioning as a fusion drive, and is running the most recent OS (10.10.2) with updates. While playing a video on the Fusion drive (desktop), I am experiencing random freezing where the computer is not usable and the mouse becomes the spinning wheel. The freezes last about 20-30 seconds and then the video resumes once the freeze ends. When I play videos from my connected external HD (connected via Thunderbolt or USB) I get no freezing at all, which makes me rule out the video card or processor.
    Is my fusion drive failing?
Was there possibly a cord that was damaged when the SSD installed?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I paid top dollar for the Mac Mini and was very excited to get it. I am not worried that I may have purchased a system that has problems.
    Thank you in advance!

Open Activity monitor and set it for CP and then memory. Have it showing when yo are playing the video. When it freezes look at the CPU and Memory usase and see if something is using up those.
Also not the exact time of a freeze and that when OK open the Console app in Finder>Applications>utilities and look for log entries at the time. Post suspicious one here.

  • Poor video quality when exporting from Adobe Premiere

Hey, I was just wondering if there was anyone here that could help me  with this problem I am having with Adobe Premiere Pro.
I have used it to edit a movie together with MOV video files from my  iPhone 3GS which are of decent quality but everytime I try to export it,  the video quality is degraded significantly from the original. I have  tried several different export options but none seem to do the trick.
Also, exporting with DivX just gives me an audio file with no video so I  have been unable to try that.
