Video RAM failed test

After running TechTool Deluxe, the video RAM was reported as "failed". I tried following all of the suggested steps but the outcome remains the same. Is this something I can resolve myself or should I call for support? How serious a situation is this? I am new to Mac (less than a month) and I've never even owned or used a pc, so please be patient and gentle with me

Hi suzy g!
Is your TechTool Deluxe on a disc, or did you download it? If it's on a disc, it may be an older version of TTD that's not recent enough for your machine. If so, it would be best to download a current version by using the TTD link in the right hand column here:

  • TechTool Deluxe-Video RAM fails

New iMac running Leopard. It came with AppleCare and TechTool Deluxe 3.1.1. I did a check on my iMac, and Video RAM failed. I am wondering whether this is due to Leopard imcompatibility?(I did get a warning when I started TechTool). or there is something wrong with iMac. Thanks.

Try running the Apple Hardware Test and see what it says. I have heard of incompatibility if the Tech Tool Deluxe is not for Leopard. You could probably take the Tech Tool Deluxe back to Apple and ask for something that is current and will work with Leopard. They should be willing to swap out the disc for you if they have something more current on hand, or have a suggestion as to what to do. There might be a download.
    Good luck!

  • Video RAM fails in Tech Tool Deluxe....

    Hello again,
I reformatted my harddrive a couple days ago, and the computer is getting quicker but I KNOW it could be faster so I did a Full Diagnostics using tech tool deluxe. The first time I did it, it passed on everything. Then the next time I was browsing the Internet, I get a Kernel Panic out of the blue. I downloaded the "menu Meters" program and None of my computers resources were Anywhere from intense (1-3% tops CPU usage) So I reboot and do the Tech Tool test yet again and This time my Video ram Fails the Diagnostics. It tells me that I should Close all Applications, Check any recent hardware installs, Reinstall the OS , then call Apple care, in that order. I tested it again after unplugging my 17" LCD from my macbook pro and I passed the Test?!
I am going to call Applecare tommorow afternoon, but do you think they will fix/replace my macbook pro if it is now passing the tests? Before I install Final Cut Studio I want to make sure I don't have to worry about any other problems with my computer. Especially something as vital as V-Ram. Plus according to my friend at a techshop, the video ram supposedly has a bad sector which was randomly diagnosted during the Techtool session, because I was using a second display, and that my Video Ram will gradually get worse and worse until I will have to send it to apple either way.
I'm interested in any information you would like to post on the subject. I am going to get it fixed one way or the other, but it's nice to have some extra input on my side when I call Applecare (it will be my first time actually).
If anyone has any tips, or comments they would be appreciated,
    Thanks.

When you did a clean install of your MBP did you write zeros to the hard drive. While it probably has nothing to do with your VRAM failing its tests it is good idea to do it anyway.
As for your VRAM failing, I would reset PRAM and NVRAM…

… and the System Management Controller…

… imediately prior to clean installing (and writing zeros to the drive) a second time.

  • FYI TechTool Deluxe & desktop choices can result in false Video RAM "fail"

If you choose to have your desktop display random pics or images, when you run TechTool Deluxe you will end up with a "fail" on your video RAM test.
    This is a false failure.
All you have to do is change your desktop to a constant image and the test will pass.
I found this out after having to reinstall my OS X and I ran TechTool Deluxe before restoring my backup and all tests passed. After restoring from backup to my desktop choice of random images changing every 5 secs, I ran TechTool Deluxe again and the test for video RAM "failed". Resetting my desktop to a constant image resulted in a "passed".

Well the apple test (on disk 1 of OSX) states that nothing is wrong. Though I will test again when the temp gets high since some people had been detecting problems.
as for 10.4.6 I downloaded it the other day.
I repaired the permissions had a couple things that it corrected (I don't know if I posting them would do any good) Out of curiousity how to permissions get incorrect? I'm so used to the windows file structure and DOS before that that i am a little confused. The last apple used alot before this macbook was an old Applee IIE.
and the TechTools still says there is an error, every time I have run the test. Though there have been some differences when I reboot or turn of and wait a second and then restart.

  • Video ram fails techtool deluxe exam

Ran Techtool Deluxe utility because of constant freezes. Diagnostic shows that the video ram portion of the test has failed. Does this mean bad video card? What are the possibilites that I must look for?
    Thanks

Cross check with the Apple Hardware Test program, extended tests. If it fails or not, contact AppleCare and get it fixed.

  • Video Ram failed, won't boot from Leopard Install Disk

    Hello,
Recently, I ran the techtools software, and got a report that my video ram had failed. It was suggested that I attempt to reinstall OSX. I put in the Leopard install disk, click the install or setup button or whatever it is, click to restart. When it restarts, a gray screen comes up, but the computer never actually boots up, from either the DVD or my hard disk.
    Any suggestions?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Since your MacBook is still very new, you shouldn't have an problem with the DVD. If I were you, I'd call AppleCare Support and have someone walk you through re-installing Mac OS X. However, I really doubt this will help resolve what seems to be a hardware failure on your MacBook. Hopefully the folks at AppleCare Support can help figure out if you need to send your MacBook in for repairs.

  • Tool Tech Video ram says failed ....hardware test shows fan problems...

Tool Tech Video ram says failed ....hardware test shows fan problems...in reference to error 4MOT/1/0000003:HDD
Anyone else experience this...and how is the fan a problems via hardware test but tool tech shows video ram failed?
Any feedback is appreciated.Computer only 6 weeks old.......:-(

My computer listed as having failed the VRAM test as well, but when I installed the Tech Tool software, it gave me the warning that the results of the test were not yet reliable for 10.5 and it might not test correctly. I've had none of the problems the the VRAM failure listed, and assume it's just an issue with the new OS and Tech Tool not being on the same page yet. PS: I love my Mac...but don't we all?

  • TechTools Deluxe (Re: Video RAM and reinstall)

I have the annoying screen inverter/logic board whine (yes I know this has been talked to death here), sometimes not so bad and sometimes I can hear it over a desktop PC is the bearing going out in one of the fans. I happen to be visiting family in a city with an Apple Store this weekend, so I thought I would talk to a real person face to face. Anyways, I ran the TechTools Deluxe CD that I received a week of so after I got my MacBook Pro. To see if there was anything else besides, my whine to mention to them and will you look what came up
    Video RAM
    Failed
Video RAM, as all components of your video circuitry, must be fully functional for graphics to be properly displayed. Damaged VRAM can cause missing bits, screen noise, system lock ups, or freezes. TechTool Deluxe tests the VRAM on the Macintosh main logic board, as well as some third-party video cards.
If the VRAM test should fail, try these steps in order and run the test again after each step:
    o Quit all other applications.
    o Restart the system.
o Check any recently-added hardware for proper installation.
o Run the computer from another volume (if available).
    o Reinstall the OS.
    o Contact AppleCare.
I have done everything except reinstall the OS and contact AppleCare.
Anyways I wanted to know first of all if anyone else had gotten this error and if so did a reinstall fix it? Secondly how hard is the reinstall, I come from years and years of DOS, 3.1, 95, 98, Me, and XP, and one thing all of them have tought me, is reinstalls are horrible, drivers don't work again, ect. So is OSX easy or should I just ask them to look at it this weekend?
Oh and the Apple Diagnostic on the OSX cd 1 says everything is fine.

Well the apple test (on disk 1 of OSX) states that nothing is wrong. Though I will test again when the temp gets high since some people had been detecting problems.
as for 10.4.6 I downloaded it the other day.

  • Video Card failing, Apple doesn't care?

Ok, i posted a few days ago about my intel based 20" imac's video going down the drain
I ran techtools, and the video ram FAILED
lines of pixels will go out and turn multicolored, almost like a spectrum, and stay that way until i turn the computer off, or, it not-so-unexpectedly, freezes.
So after about my 3rd call to apple regarding this, I informed them of what happened with techtools and they had me run apple hardware test, there were no problems found, in either the short or extended test
so, even though I have my 3 year applecare plan and it obviously needs repair, since it passed the tests on apple hardware test, they will not fix it.
I figured I could just do what i had been wanting to do, and upgrade the video card either way, and pay for it myself, that would fix the problem, and my machine would be better, well, you can only upgrade it at the time of purchase
so I'm stuck with a lemon and they won't do anything about it
    some customer support.

I actually took my iMac in on monday for a similar issue. They're benching it right now to see if they can reproduce the problem. I took pictures of my issue, cause I have a pessimistic view towards computer issues. They happen to you all the time, but never for a technician.
Be prepared to wipe your system drive, if they find anything with Version Tracker they don't like, they may just want to blame the software. I told them to wipe mine after they found "questionable" software, even though the problem appeared long after the software was installed. As if some drag and drop .app was actually causing this... :P
Mine had horizontal black lines appear during scrolling in Finder or Firefox. It would also reboot or freeze during any Quartz Composer based screensavers and once during Flurry.
$10 says they can't reproduce it on their end on my machine...

  • Apple  Care Tech Tool disk indicates video ram failure

I have a MBP purchased in 3/08 - 2.4 with 256MB GeForce 8600M and the tech tool disc keeps telling me the video ram failed the test process. What does this mean and could this explain the pages taking so long to load in safari that have pictures and video? Safari on certain web site pages will sit there in a continuous loading position. The status bar will progress about 1 inch and never move again or load the page. I have to continuously keep reloading the page until it will finally complete the page. Even then half the pictures will not load. This started about a month ago, which is why I bought the apple care.
    Thanks
    Frank

It means the video RAM has failed. Take it in for service.

  • How do i repair video ram failure?

My imac 11,3 has been starting and running extremely slow. TechTooldeluxe shows that the video ram failed. How can i repair this?

if it's real video ram and not shared system ram working as video ram
then the memory chips are soldered into the pcb not something a non pro even if they bought the memory chips to replace with can do with a smd soldering iron

  • Techtool deluxe on osx lion does not run video ram test

I ran Techtool Deluxe after having installed OS X Lion. When it gets to the Video Ram test it quits. If I disable this test all is fine. What's wrong with testing video ram on OSX Lion?
    Thanks.
    G

Same problem. I've been having a lot of weird issues ever since Lion. Safari has crashed about ten times in the last two days and my mac keeps logging off all by its self. It seems that Techtool Deluxe and Lion don't go well together...when it starts it says that it hasn't been tested with Lion, and they no longer include it with AppleCare, so it seems that apple has discontinued the application. I'd say that from here on out, Techtool Deluxe will simply be a memory of the past...so probably just don't use it anymore.

  • Error message AHT 1.2.3: Error code disp/13/2 in video ram test section

    Hello to the forum,
i have garbage on the screen on my Titanium DVI 867MHZ, so i run AHT in extended session and on video test section the first test with green-red stripes on screen runs but then the message Error code disp/13/2 appears. Does that mean the display has a problem or the video-ram is faulty or the grafic chip?
    Greetings iMacG5-User

Unfortunately, AHT's very cryptic messages are intended to benefit Apple technicians, not ordinary civilians. That said, any message about a video or display problem is bad news, because it probably means replacing either the logic board or the display, and each is very expensive.

  • Video service quality test failed

Very pleased with my broadband speed (ethernet connection), no complaints whatsoever. But have never come across this before - "video service quality test failed". Tried googling it, but came up with nothing but rubbish-speak.
I ran the BT test and this was an option so clicked the box and it ran another test and up popped this message.

  • TechTool Deluxe Crash During Video Ram Test

I have a 2008 20" iMac and I keep getting random freezes. The cursor will move bet every other function is disabled. I tried to use the TechTool Deluxe to try and figure out the root of the problem, but everytime it gets to the video ram it crashes. I unchecked the video ram test and all the tests after it ran smooth. Btw I'm running Lion with Intel dual core
