Video Ram Questions

Ok, so obviously the Blueberry iBook Clamshell has only 4 MB of video ram in the logic board. This is clearly preventing almost any video playback, preventing iTunes movie preview/viewing, and eliminating the need for upgrading to a Combo drive, as DVD playback is impossible.
I know that the later model iBooks have logic boards that will play DVD movies, thanks to their increased video ram. It doesn't make much sense for me to replace the logic board with one out of a Indigo or Key Lime iBook, although if I find a working logic board for dirt cheap......it MAY be feasible.....
Is there ANY WAY POSSIBLE to (maybe via software...) allow the video chip to SHARE some of the system RAM to increase the video ram somehow, and expand the capabilities of the displays on these models? Or is there some sort of hardware method to increase video ram on the logic board?

No and no.

  • Video Ram Error Detected Question

Had my screen lock up and when I ran Apple Hardware Test I received a VIDEO RAM ERROR DETECTED - Error code 2NYD/1/4:2122
Scrolling is all messed up, tried reinstalling system software but nothing seems to help. Only starts after quite a few tries.
Do I need to take in for service or is there a software fix?

    Welcome to the discussions Eugene.
If I were you, I'd take it in for service. It sounds like a hardware problem that a software update won't fix.
I hope it works out for you.

  • Video Ram using windows

hy everybody i've got a question.
I recently bought a brand new iMac (27' 3,4 i7 4GB Video Ram 8GB cpu ram 1TB fusion drive). I need to install a win programm which needs at least 3 GB of video ram.
i tried with parallels desktop 8 but it said i can only virtulize 1GB of video ram.
i wonder if anybody got my same problem, should i use boot camp or any other program?
i can't stand to wait a mac version of that program or any other program, i've got 4 gb of video ram and i want to use them!
thank u very much and sorry for my not perfect english!
    Apple rulez!

From what I know, that game doesn't require 3 GB of VRAM, so you should be able to install it on your Mac with Boot Camp.
First, get a 64-bit Windows 7 and 8 version, and follow these steps to install Windows > http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1636/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_ 10.8.pdf Then, install the game

  • How is performance on Macbook Pro 15" 2ghz 128mb video ram?

Is anyone running aperture with the 128mb video ram?
Trying to decide if the approx $500 difference between models is really worth it for the ram. I know there's a little more hd space and a tick faster cpu speed but I'm mainly concerned with the ram question.
    Thanks to all,
    Larry

You get 25% more hard drive, 8% faster CPU, double the VRAM for $500 if you are comparing stock systems only. However if you are building to order the price difference will be much less than $500 the way the BTO options price out. And, you should want 2 GB of RAM. To achieve that with the cheaper MBP you either need to throw away the 512 and buy two DIMMs instead of just one or pay Apple $500 instead of the $300 if you had bought the better MBP.
For a MBP with 120 GB hard drive, 2 GB RAM BTO cost is:
2.0 GHz MBP with 128 MB VRAM, $2699
2.16 GHz MBP with 256 MB VRAM, $2899
$200 difference, not $500. Of course buying third party RAM will change it some. Either way I think max HD size and max RAM is important and at less than $300 actual difference I consider the faster box a smarter purchase. Best value of all is the 17" MBP with its 8x DVD and FW800.
Note that Apple and graphics apps clearly are sharing more processing with the GPU as time goes on. IMO it behooves us to get fastest available (at reasonable price) GPUs for the future, not because of any perceived performance difference today.
This thread mirrors comments I made a year+ ago. Look what happened to folks who bought G5s and saved a few bucks because at the time better GPUs BTO mostly affected only video/3D. Then Surprise! Aperture came along and knocked multiprocessor G5s without upgraded cards to their knees. Further surprise, Apple - IMO incredibly and unethically - refused to facilitate card upgrade purchases to folks who had purchased Apple's best Macs, now lamed by an Apple app.
Personally when I buy it is always with fastest available (at reasonable price) GPUs; just trying to get max graphics performance which historically has always been challenging to hardware setups.
IMO it is essential to buy for the future, not for today. Today will be over before a new box is even delivered...
There are many earlier threads that discussed this that you can find by backtracking through the thread list. One is <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=478038&tstart=100>.

  • Is it possible to increase GMA 950 Video Ram from 64MB?

    Hi,
Sorry if this question has been answered plenty of times before, but I am wondering if there is a way to increase the GMA shared VRAM from 64MB?
If not is Apple planning to make this a configurable option in future firmware versions?
The reason I'm worring about video RAM is although the GMA 950 holds up pretty well in OS X animations, as soon as I start using 2 or more desktops in spaces, or 2 monitors, things get choppy. Has anyone else had this problem and if so did anyone find a solution?

That might be a good idea. I started out with an upgrade myself and had a few problems. I then did a new install and it runs much better. You might want to try an Archive and Install.

  • T420 Dedicated Video Ram

    Hello all,
I couple years ago I bought my girlfriend a Lenovo T420 for college. While not designed to be a gaming laptop, we've been able to get by playing most everything without a problem. Recently I started playing Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn, but she is unable to even download to her computer due to low dedicated RAM (she has 64 MB, but the minimum req is 256 MB). Is there any way to increase the dedicated video RAM or anything we can do so she can play without having to buy a new computer (since we're trrying to save for a wedding we're pretty strapped for cash)? I've read in a few places that some folks have been able to build external graphics cards for their laptops, but I don't know if this is even an option. Thank you for your help, I greatly appreciate it!
Specs: Lenovo T420; Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit; Intel Core i5 2450M CPU 2.5GHz; 4GB RAM; Intel(R) HD Graphics Family

    Hi,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Memory remapping for the Graphics is done through BIOS. If the remapping feature is not available in BIOS under configuration, it means that it is either set to Auto or to a certain amount.
Right-click on the Desktop and click Personalize. Click Display in the bottom left corner of the Window. Click the Change display settings on the left column. Click the advanced settings link and you can view the total available memory to the graphics card as well as the dedicated memory. The dedicated memory is how much memory your video card has.
Refer this knowledgebase for a better understanding.
    Best regards,
    Mithun.

  • Video RAM?

Hello everyone. I have a few questions concerning "video RAM." I'm still young, and have a lot to learn concerning computer hardware, and especially Macintosh software as I am a brand new user (just switched from many years of Windows a few weeks ago). As of now, I've taught myself a lot about computers in general, and am doing a decent job with learning Mac. But, right now, I still have no idea what video RAM is or does. So, what is it? What's the difference between 128MB and 256MB? Is it noticeable? Is it a worthy investment? Basically, I'm looking for an all out explination on Video RAM. Thanks a billion, in advance.

Again, I may be in the minority on this one as I am not a gamer so I can't say from first hand experience, but it is kind of like the Mhz myth in relation to the processor speed. The perception is the more the better and certainly games are graphics intensive but if you are running your standard resolution (20" is 1680 X 1250) with millions of colors (24 bit? 32 bit?), the standard 128 MB should suffice as it only supports the pixels available on screen. Extended screen = more pixels to support which is where you may see added benefit to having more memory available.
It is not necessarily a speed issue. That is where the bus comes into play (how fast the system interacts with the memory). Gamers, typically, want the most system they can get so they will typically shoot for the most memory available and, in relation, a faster bus. Again, I'm not a gamer so there may be reasons to have more memory available but I'm not aware of what those would be. It seems that the bus speed is much more relevant to gaming than the amount of video memory (unless, of course, they are playing on 50" plasma tv's).
    imho.

  • Video Ram Error Code

I ran Hardware Test and got an error for Video Ram. 2ATI/1/4 113xxxxx117
Can I replace the Video Ram myself? If not, how much does a repair like that cost? RAM is guaranteed for life, right? So how about Video Ram?
I am getting lines around icons and the cursor. It is imposible to watch any videos in iTunes or FrontRow without enormous graphic interference. Like a really bad connection on your TV.
    Thanks.

The video RAM is part of the motherboard. It is not something that you can replace yourself. Unfortunately it means that you need a new motherboard.
FYI, you should ask future questions in the iMac G5 discussion area since you have an iMac G5.

  • Video ram faiure on techtool deluxe

What does this mean when your video ram section of the test fails. I used the techtool deluxe that came with the apple care. Does this indicate a damaged video card?

    Kaliki,
If you are having issues then maybe TechTool's report is correct.

  • 128 MB video ram on a macbook pro - enough to drive the new 30"?

128 MB video ram on a macbook pro - enough to drive the new 30"?
meaning, can it do this well???

Even 16 MB VRAM would be enough to display a 2D picture on the 30".
Depending on 3D usage you need much VRAM.
Unless you are using a lot of the latest 3D games or Apples 3D pro apps (Motion/Shake or something like that) 128 MB should be fine.

  • Is it possible to use my ram as dedicated video ram on windows 8 bootcamp

    i have a mid 2014 MacBook pro
    8gb of ram
    dual core i5
    intel iris 5100 graphics
im using my mac for gaming and need some dedicated video ram, I saw other computers like asus or Toshiba that were able to boot into windows bios and change there ram as dedicated ram, bootcamp has no bios so im wondering if there any third party applications of something built into bootcamp that would allow me to change a setting like that.
    thanks in advance

    From http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-033984.htm
How is graphics memory allocated in Windows 8/8.1*?
The Microsoft Windows 8/8.1 operating system adds improved support for graphics, simplifying graphics, memory configuration, and management. As part of this new graphics memory management, the Intel® HD Graphics Driver leaves more of the graphics memory sizing to Windows 8/8.1.
W8+ report GPU memory differently as compared to OSX.
