Video Reviews for Corporate Clients
I'm a 3D animator and I need to be able to post QuickTime video reviews that corporate clients can view reliably. The reason I mention that they are corporate clients is because they often times don't have the ability to install software, including upgrades, which means I have to assume that they aren't using the latest version of QuickTime.
I see embedded videos all the time on apple.com/trailers that look great and stream smoothly. I believe most of those videos are using the h264 codec, but I think I'm better off not using h264 since you need QT7 to decode it. Let's assume my clients are using QT6 and cannot upgrade due to IT department restrictions on their end.
That being the case, I'm probably better off using something like MPEG-4 Video as my compressor. The point being I want to use something that will give me the most bang for my bandwidth buck, quality-wise, while at the same time sticking with something legacy that older versions of QT can view.
My videos in Premiere are almost always D1 NTSC Widescreen 720x486, pixel aspect ratio (PAR) 1.2, and when I export them as an MOV, I export as 640x360 PAR 1.0 so I can keep it in a widescreen format and avoid PAR-related distortion. I save them out as MOV with PNG compression at 100% quality, so I can quickly convert them to anything the client needs via QT Pro, without having to re-render the Premiere project multiple times. It's a real time saver. Up till now, I've been putting FLV videos on the web, but I'd like to start using embedded QuickTime videos instead, because you get finer control out of the scrub bar in the QT player than you do with a Flash video.
So my question is this. What are the magic settings (don't laugh) I should use when I'm exporting an MOV that I intend on embedding into a web page? I've already read Apple's tutorial on this, found here:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/embed.html
...but that really just glosses over the topic, without giving you any recommended settings. I fully realize that the settings you use are extremely dependent on each individuals needs, due to video size, the type of content in the video, etc. However, we know the size I'm working with (640x360) and we know I'm showing complex animations with gradations of tone and hue.
Currently I'm setting my compressor as MPEG-4 Video, and I'm choosing "Hinted Streaming" for my streaming preset. I'm using all of the Hinted Streaming default settings.
Thanks,
Dustin
Last part answered first. No need for "hint" tracks unless your files are served via streaming server software. Just use "Fast Start". File size is smaller (no hint tracks) so you'll get a faster download.
Compression is an art form and there is no "magic" setting. You are correct in choosing MPEG-4 Video codec for backward compatibility.
Export is about two goals when working with Web based files. Quality is subjective and your viewers want "fast" and care less about quality than you think.
The best method is multiple exports. Use lower data rates and work your way up. Start with a ten second test export at various data rate keeping all of the other settings the same. You can compare these files side by side in QuickTime Pro by using the "Play all Movies" (View menu).
Since all of your files are going to bit a bit different what works for one may need "tweaking" in another export.

Video transitions for corporate videos
Hello,
I am doing my first corporate video and wandering which transitions work and aren't too cheesy. It's for a building merchants. I have downloaded alpha transitions but haven't used them before. I had a quick look and they seem to say 'insert text here'. Am I doing something wrong? I want transitions without text.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks!Here's some advice:
Try posting on a bulletin board that has something to do with video?!
Sheesh!!
This is a Logic/Mainstage bulletin board.
But since you have my attention, and I also work with video, I can say this:
Do the transitions look cheesy to you?
Are they stock transitions that came with you NLE?
Take some pride in your work, and do what the pro's do:
Build, and automate your OWN transitions that look good to you. Chances are, they will look good to other people too.

Can I preload videos to a new ipad for a corporate client?
Hello Everyone,
I have a corporate client who is looking at distributing about 300 units to their clients and want a marketing video preloaded. The marketing video would be a corporate promotional video they want to give to priority clients.
We have had requests on this in the past, but it seems that ipods/ipads need to be connected to itunes before they are used, and a connection to itunes would personalize the ipad. So it would seem that we would have an issue in putting a video on an ipad and then duplicating that setup.
Could we create a master backup and apply/restore each unit with the video before they go out?
Do you have any ideas?
FrankThank for the response.
In the past I've checked into this on iPod Nanos and was given the recommendation to load the movie to the drive portion of the iPod (Enable disc mode). Is that a function that is available on iPad?
With repsect to your response on contacting Apple, we haven't really gotten anywhere with them directly, as our 300 pcs. doesn't amount to much with them in the big picture. I'll give it a shot though and see if their response has changed.
Thanks again! -
Creating Video Podcasts for download by clients
Hi there,
I'm new to ipods & have recently bought an ipod touch. Now as I look through itunes & podcasts, I notice people creating photo slideshows, etc for clients to be able to download as podcasts from within itunes.
Could someone point me in the direction of instructions/how-to's for creating a slideshow podcast, then on making it downloadable in itunes for my clients?
Thanks in advance

Is there a function in the Creative Cloud like the cs Review in Premiere 5.0? I simply want to allow a client to view each updated version of a video I'm producing for him. We are both CC subscribers. individually.
Hi Brian,
Is there a function in the Creative Cloud like the cs Review in Premiere 5.0? I simply want to allow a client to view each updated version of a video I'm producing for him. We are both CC subscribers. individually.
No, that was removed some time ago. I agree that it would be nice to see something similar return. In the mean time, feel free to file a feature request here: http://adobe.ly/feature_request
A company that seems to be filling that gap has a solution for you. Check out this link: Wipster | Video Review and Approval - Free

Hi all, i'm a freelance deveoper from italy. A client ask me to develop an ipad application (basically , a set of video tutorial for their vendors) , that must be distribuited only on corporate ipad's, and MUST not pass through appstore ( the videos will explain internal procedures they dont want to share).
My first thought was to develop a web app , maybe locked with a username/pass, but the application must be viewable also offline, as their vendors travel around italy, and the videos i have to include are around 30 mb.
So i checked ditribution methods here : https://developer.apple.com/programs/start/ios/ , but it seems that i can't apply to the IOS enterprise program , as i havent a DUNS number, and i'm not a company for italian laws! .
So the question is : How can i procede to don't lose my client? How can i distribuite this app on my client ipads?
Thanks in advance! As part of your development contract with them, they will provide their duns number ( You can look it up in some book ). You will enroll the firm in the apple ipad development program. You will provide firm will all passwords etc. You can write the contract to obsure any of the firms "hot" words from the head office.
You will only employ the Apple approved methods of download the applications to the iPad(s). You will provide written documentation on these procedures. The firm will own all your work products.
( Make this sound like a security issue in the contract. It is a security issue. )
They are contracting with you to do a job. Make the contract results oriented. Don't ask lots of questions that might cause issues. Do it then point to the contract as authorization because that the only way to do it!

Cisco Jabber for Windows Client SDK
Is there an SDK for Cisco Jabber for Windows client? I could only find the Web SDK. Are there no other SDKs that would let me control features of the Jabber Windows Client?
And in order to avoid TAPI limitation, they say they have started using Jabber which controls all phone functionalities through an Application User connected to the Call Manager.
Assuming they are referring to the normal Jabber for Windows/Mac/iOS/Android applications then this is wrong. Jabber - the client, not the IM&P servers which are part of the CUCM cluster (if you're familiar with Lync consider CUCM+IM&P servers a Front End Pool) - do not use an Application User at all. When a user starts Jabber, assuming SAML SSO is off, they supply an email address. This is used to find the servers via DNS SRV records, or the Mobile and Remote Access Expressway (roughly analogous to a Lync Edge pool) to tunnel through the firewall. After the email address they are prompted for their End User username and password. This is then used to access several APIs on the server, namely the User Data Service to discover what the user has. This would include what the user has configured/available to them. After this is done the Jabber client does one of three things with respect to phone functionality:
If the user has no phone devices provisioned for them - physical or software - it becomes an IM&P client only.
If the user has a software phone phone provisioned, it registers as that using SIP. In this way Jabber is the actual phone. This is called a CSF device for Jabber Windows/OS X.
If the user has a desk phone assigned to their End User account AND administrative policy is to default to desk phone control, it registers to CTI Manager on the CUCM server to control the user's physical phone.
A user can toggle between option two and three, if appropriately provisioned, but cannot have both simultaneously. In other words, Jabber is either controlling a physical phone over CTI or is a phone itself using SIP. The difference is where the audio/video media is sent from/to.
All of this happens using that human's End User credentials.
Now, if you wanted to have a server control the user's phone - either a physical one or Jabber - you would use the TSP as an interface to CTI Manager on the CUCM server and receive real-time events (e.g. the user went off-hook, the phone is ringing with this caller ID, etc.) and issue commands to that phone (e.g. make a call to X). This is done using an Application User account because the server would need to do this for multiple users simultaneously. If you also use the Super Provider concept, the CUCM administrator doesn't have to take the extra step of associating every phone to your Application User manually. Instead, you can simply issue CTI subscriptions to see any/all device activity you want.
This is all assuming you wanted to do the integration server-side to avoid having to update the Cisco TSP application on every user PC (which also limits your WPF application to machines capable of running the TSP) every time the CUCM administrator patches the servers. If you don't care about that, then you can do this all client-side on the user's PC, and have them supply their End User credentials.
Of course, you could also reconsider the Jabber SDK and just embed the make/receive call functionality directly into your application instead. -

See if this driver works. If it doesn't, you will need to install a 64 bit operating system if you want to run windows 7.
I know this driver works for the Celeron N processors, but I don't know if it will work with the Pentium N processors.
Download, unzip and run the setup.exe file.

I am planning to ofgfer the apple TV services for my client in a number of room. I know that apple TV could be set with different ID/label to differentiate them if I am, installing multiple device within the same wireless coverage SSID. However, how do I prevent intruders cutiing in with some other contents while my client is doing the presentation? For example in Room A, client A is doing the video opresentation vioa his Mac book Pro. there is always a possibility that some people with OS X Mountain Lion detect the device and decide to play a prank and start to push other contents to the Apple TV device in Room A. If the device could provide an authentication feature, there will actually resolve my concern. Appreciate any feedback. Thanks Richard
Hi soo.richard,
You say it could be intruders cutting in - same problem/solution as for any network I think. Access can be password protected or access limited via MAC address filtering. I'm not sure how Apple Tv works with a hidden SSID but that would be another option.
Airplay itself can be password protected through the airplay settings.
I'm not sure if Apple TV works with other authentication such as a password but maybe the manual will assist with this?
Hope this helps. -
FCP 5 export to .AVI for Windows client? Advice needed!
I have a Windows platform client that wants my Exported FCP 5 Sequence in .AVI format.
Obviously, I normally always use Export to Quicktime Movie in FCP, and I do know that their is not a direct choice in FCP to export/convert as an .AVI file. (I usually hand off the FCP file to another facility that does DVD Studio Pro authoring work, and haven't had a need to make different file formats).
This has made me to ponder of few bits of info, that I'm sure I could get great ansers to, here.
My normal "workaround" for making an .AVI for a Windows user is to Export as Quicktime Movie in FCP, like normal, and then open that exported file in Quicktime Pro, and use Export Movie to AVI in Quicktime Pro. Is this the best method? Secondly, I am a little unsure as to the best settings I should use in QT Pro to achieve this. For example:
I just did a routine NTSC 48k,16 bit stereo, 30 second ad in FCP, and my normal, Export to Quicktime Movie was about 260 meg in size for the finished, self-contained movie file.
I opened this in QT-Pro and ran Export to AVI. In the settings dialog, I chose "uncompressed" for video and 48k-16 bit stereo for audio. The resulting export was about 680 meg in size! Because of file size restrictions for the clients product, what settings change or choice should I be making in QT-Pro to get an "equivalent" of the 260 meg file the FCP is exporting? Should I not get an equal file size of the QT-Pro AVI versus the FCP export (both 260 meg?).
If the answer is compression, what is the best settings in QT-Pro? Cinepak? Intel Indeo?
Perhaps, I have always misunderstood what FCP Export to Movie is giving me, but I thought that was uncompressed video? If so, why do I get the 260 meg out of FCP, and then 680 meg from QT-Pro Export to AVI (uncompressed) for the same 30 second clip? Is it simply a data rate difference?
Lastly, I have actually had a Windows user take a FCP Export to Movie file, straight from me, and they say it opened fine in Windows Media Player as is for viewing. However, there is no (dot) file extension name on the end of the filename. They can simply click File/Open in Windows Media Player and choose the "unrecognized" file because of no extension, and play it just fine to at least view the clip.
So what exactly is the file type that FCP is creating? It's not a .MOV and not an AVI file. What would be the equivalent file type association (just for my curiosity).
Thanks for any help to the above as I value the more-experienced users here.
WadeHi Wade,
Sorry for letting your post unanswered for two days, we were all busy (I know, it is not an excuse).
Seriously, I think the reason you are not getting answers is you have asked too many questions in one post. Don't know about others, but I get slightly confused.
Let me tell you what I do with FCP material when I send it to our sound department where they work with Nuendo on PCs. I export sequence using QT Conversion. My settings are: Format - AVI, Compression type - DV-PAL, Compressor quality - Best. I do not bother much about the sound. I sent the resulting file over network to a Maxtor FireWire external drive connected to a colleague's PC and then take the drive down to the sound guys. If the AVI file is smaller than 2 GB I can burn it to a DVD and a PC can open it, if it is larger, PCs cannot open. Also, the sound guys ask me not to use Cinepac, they do not like it. Therefore, I use DV-PAL; I guess you may safely use DV-NTSC but it depends on who will open the AVI file. Ask your client what it wants.
I think my routine is a bit more streamlined than yours - I export straight from FCP and do not bother with QT. You are wrong in saying that there is no direct way in FCP to export AVI.
Hope this is a starter for more answers. Also, have you tried searching the forum? I am sure all the answers are already there. -
Help with business catalyst with muse for a client's website
I created a site for a client using creative cloud muse, she got a business analyst account and added me as a user, but i am not able to upload the site straight from muse using publish .. what am i doing wrong?
There is a workaround. It takes a little more work, but it is definitely worth it and will solve your problem. I subscribed and learned from tutorials on the www(.)trainsimple(.)com. They have a video series called "Muse CC Business Catalyst Integration" which was very helpful. The issue that everyone on here is referring to is covered in the 3 videos labelled, "Email Sign Up Checkbox", "Moving Muse Webforms to Business Catalyst" and "Email Marketing".
Essentially, what you want to do is create a form in Business Catalyst, turn that form into a module, assign a tag to that module, then put the tag into Muse using Object > Insert HTML. This will solve Muse deleting the web forms everytime. -
Apple Lightning to 30-pin Adapter Video Review
And now without further ado, I introduce to you the most exciting Apple video review ever created!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seEnQfq41qcAs I suggested above ,the first iPod had a firewire connection ,as did the next ( I have one)
I also had the first Bose sounddock which was designed for the first iPod and required the afore mentioned adapter to work with my iPhone 3G
As I said to charge the iPhone 3G you need the adapter to change the 30 pin wiring from having firewire to just USB as everything is today
Look at
as an example ,this is the type of adapter you require to change the car live connection to support the iPhone 3G
If you then also want to use an iPhone 5 you will IN ADDITION require the lightning to 30 pin adapter

How to make video screensaver for iPad?
Dear all,
does any one know how to make a video screensaver for iPad? We plan to use iPad's (with iOs7) in our retail shops and we want them to role video screensavers (while iPad is locked). I know that Apple Demo has it.
And did I miss something but in previous iOs versions there was possibility to make photo slide show when iPad is locked and now in iOs7 it is not possible? Or is there a work around?
Thanks! The slide show on the lock screen feature has been removed from iOS. However, there are apps that will let you create slide shows. There are probably ones that will loop videos as well. You should be able to combine one of these with the Guided Access feature (which restricts the iPad to one app) to do what you want. Search the App Store for slide show apps. Review the information in the manual for Guided Access.
Best of luck. -

Revision: 12025
Author: [email protected]

Log Message:
Switching out the old video component for the new video component that uses OSMF. Also fixing RSL issue with OSMF because a change in flex-config.xml accidentally got overwritten. Also fixing a bug caught during the last code review where you would set the volume on the VideoPlayer, but the volumeBar wouldn't be made aware of that change.
Switching out the video component results in many API changes. The changes are highlighted below:
Class name changes:
- spark.primitives.VideoElement is being renamed to spark.components.VideoDisplay
- spark.components.mediaClasses.StreamingVideoSource is renamed to park.components.mediaClasses.DynamicStreamingVideoSource
- spark.components.mediaClasses.StreamItem is renamed to park.components.mediaClasses.DynamicStreamingVideoItem
VideoDisplay/VideoPlayer event changes:
The new video component's events are:
- bytesLoadedChange : org.osmf.events.LoadEvent
- currentTimeChange : org.osmf.events.TimeEvent
- durationChange : org.osmf.events.TimeEvent
- mediaPlayerStateChange : org.osmf.events.MediaPlayerStateChangeEvent
The old video component's events were:
- close : spark.events.VideoEvent (removed)
- complete : spark.events.VideoEvent (replaced with mediaPlayerStateChange)
- metaDataReceived : spark.events.VideoEvent (replaced with mediaPlayerStateChange)
- playheadUpdate : spark.events.VideoEvent (replaced with currentTimeChange)
- progress : flash.events.ProgressEvent (replaced with bytesLoadedChange)
- ready : spark.events.VideoEvent (replaced with mediaPlayerStateChange)
VideoDisplay/VideoPlayer property changes:
Renames:
- maintainAspectRatio:Boolean has been renamed to scaleMode:String and rather than true/false, it now access 4 values: none, zoom, letterbox, and stretch. See the enum class org.osmf.display.ScaleMode.
- playheadTime:Number has been renamed to currentTime:Number
- playWhenHidden has been renamed to pauseWhenHidden, and it's "tense" has been reversed. So playWhenHidden = true correlates to pauseWhenHidden = false. Also, before we would only pause when the video component was explcitly set to visible=false, but now we detect if the video components or any of it's ancestors have been hidden.
- totalTime:Number has been renamed to duration:Number
New properties:
- bytesLoaded:Number This is a new property not available on the old video component
- bytesTotal:Number This is a new property not available on the old video component
- loop: Boolean this was a property added a while ago on the old video component but not in the original video player spec
- mediaPlayerState: this is a new property that details the state of the video component. See org.osmf.media.MediaPlayerState for all the possible values.
- seekToFirstFrame:Boolean (pending PARB approval) - This is a new property available on VideoDisplay/VideoPlayer. When autoPlay = false, if seekToFirstFrame is set to true, then we will connect to the server to start downloading the video, figure out the size of the video and resize appropriately, and show the first frame of the video. If seekToFirstFrame is false, then no connection to the server is made, there's no implicit size for this video, and the first frame will not be show automatically. By default the value of this property is true. In the old video component, when autoPlay = false, we always has the same behavior as seekToFirstFrame = true. Now it is controllable through this property. Eventually, (not for Flex 4.0), we will most-likely have support for a thumbnail source or a splash screen so the video's preview will show up without making an unneeded connection to the server. The property name may change depending on PARB.
Other changes:
- autoRewind: The default of autoRewind is now true instead of false
- enabled: before we paused the video when the video component was explicitly set to enabled = false. Now we pause the video when the video component or any of it's ancestors have been disabled.
VideoPlayer-only changes:
- videoObject:flash.media.Video property is now a new property on VideoPlayer. It was previously only on VideoDisplay.
- The skin states for the old VideoPlayer were: connectionError, disabled, disconnected, loading, playing, stopped, connectionErrorAndFullScreen, disabledAndFullScreen, disconnectedAndFullScreen, loadingAndFullScreen, playingAndFullScreen, stoppedAndFullScreen. The new skin states are: uninitialized, loading, ready, playing, paused, buffering, playbackError, disabled, uninitializedAndFullScreen, loadingAndFullScreen, readyAndFullScreen, playingAndFullScreen, pausedAndFullScreen, bufferingAndFullScreen, playbackErrorAndFullScreen, disabledAndFullScreen
DynamicStreamingVideoItem property changes:
- bitRate:Number renamed to bitrate:Number
DynamicStreamingVideoSource property changes:
- initialIndex has been added to DynamicSteramingVideoSource
- live:Boolean has changed to streamType:String which accepts values: live, recorded, any. See the enum class org.osmf.net.StreamType for more info.
- serverURI:String renamed to host:Object
- streamItems:Array has changed types to streamItems:Vector.
ScrubBar property changes (THESE CHANGES ARE NOT DONE YET, BUT SHOULD BE DONE SOON)
- bufferedStart will be removed
- bufferedEnd will be renamed to loadedRangeEnd. This property name still may change depending on PARB.
- bufferedArea skin part needs to be renamed. Probably will be renamed to loadedArea. PARB still deciding.
