Video size in iMovie

Hello,
I am importing movies to iMovie and for some reason the size of the movie is six times bigger.
For example: I have a 12MB movie and after I import it and select "Reveal in Finder",
I see that the same movie is now 77MB. Why does it happen?
I select the large and not the full size.
The movie in the example is HD so its resolution is even better than the "large".
I can't understand why it make it 6 times bigger.
Is there anything I can do to change that?
Thank you

The likely answer is that your camera is recording your footage using a compression codec which uses inter-frame compression where any given frame of video may be dependent on other frames.
In order to be able to remove or reorder any frame you want when editing in iMovie the compressed file first needs to unpacked and each frame compressed separately.  This accounts for the larger file size you're seeing on import.

How do you reduce vidio size on imovie ?

Do you mean the size of a shared video file?     You have to choose lower resolution or quality.  What version of iMovie are you using?

  • Hello guys! Do you know how to make a video smaller on imovie? Not by size or trim, i mean simply show the video as small as possible in the middle of the screen! Please text back.

Go to the Map, Background & Animatic Browser (last button in the centre tool bar alongside the Transition button). Drag the Black background (or any background) to your project. From an Event, drag the video selection directly onto the Black clip in the project. As you drop the video clip, a pop-up menu will appear. Select Picture in Picture.
Your video will appear as a small picture within the black clip. Click on it and reposition it to the centre of the viewer, using the yellow guide lines to get the exact centre position. Resize the Picture in Picture if desired by dragging the corner handles.
NOTE: You may need to extend the duration of the Black clip to match the duration of the video clip. Double-click on the Black clip to open the Inspector, then adjust the duration there.

  • Final Cut Pro X Exported Video Size

I've recently bought Final Cut Pro X and use it for editing videos before uploading to YouTube.  I used to export my videos from iMovie as a .mov file to my hard drive to then manually upload to YouTube.  There doesn't seem to be this option in Final Cut, so I've taken to using the YouTube share feature but it never uploads so I just manually upload the .mov file that it saves somewhere in the Final Cut shared files folder.
The problem I have is that I export a 720P file so assumed that the video size would be 1280 x 720, it always was with iMove.  I've found that Final Cut spits out the video at 1248 x 702 and this is quite annoying as it sometimes cuts off the top and bottom of a video.  Is there any reason why it does this or any way to get it to export at the correct display size?

How can I change the size? Normally I export at 720P in iMovie and the video and format are both 1280 x 720.  I did a screencast using Quicktime and due to the change in display size it's chopped off the toolbar at the top and a small portion of the dock.  I've had to resize the clip in Final Cut to 95% of the original size to get it to fit in the 1248 x 702 size that it chooses to put it in.
As this was only a screencast the file size tends to be this small, but normally I shoot at full HD on my camcorder and the video can be about 10 mins in length.  I used the export media function and the resulting file was about 8GB in size!  iMovie would typically give me a .mov file anywhere between 700MB - 1.5GB depedning on the length of the video and that suited me fine, but there doesn't seem to be any way to get it that small using the Export Media.  Not much of a problem really coz I'm fine using the YouTube share option to get what I want.

  • How can i decrease the fuzziness of my video clip in imovie?

I have imported video clips into imovie and when i crop out the background so the person is closer, it becomes fuzzy ... so i uncropped the clip and now i have exported the video using quick time and chose the 1920 x 1080 HD size which made it a little better although still kind of fuzzy ... when the screen is small, it is clear ... just want to know if there is something else i can look at ... thanks everyone!!

It is not possible, however, there are other measures that can possibly prolong your battery. You may watch this informative video courtesy of Nokia Support Videos - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLa4ZJX_lAs

  • How to change export video size settings?

I just upgraded from iMovie to Final Cut Pro X.
I am trying to export my 1080P content as a 720P file, something that was very easy on the basic iMovie setup.
I noticed when I tried to export to Vimeo I was given options for file quality and video size.
Where do I find those options if I am doing an export to a file as opposed a direct Vimeo upload (i.e. Quicktime)?
Please don't tell me I have to buy Compressor for this...
    Thank you!

    Share>Export Using Compressor Settings>Apple>Apple Devices>HD for Apple Devices (10mbps)
    This will give 1280x720 HD
I don't think you need Compressor as the Compressor Settings are included in FCP X  .  .  .  I hope!

  • How do you reduce a movie size in iMovie 10 to upload to youtube?

how do you reduce a movie size in iMovie 10 to upload to youtube?

Go to File>Share>File, choose the size (probably should choose either SD or Large) then click Next, give it a name, then click Save.
Go to iDVD. Go to File>Import>Video and select the file you just created. It will bring the video into your iDVD project.
This was always the way I did it in the previous version of iMovie. Works just fine.

  • How to improve poor video quality in iMovie?

I have a movie in iTunes (version 10.6.3).  When I play the video, the quality is good on my Mac, on my iPad 3 and on my Apple TV.  The Apple TV is hooked to a 42-inch LCD TV.
Next, I open the video file (MP4) using QuickTime Player.  I use the Edit and Trim commands to create a 1-minute segment from the video.  I save the segment from Quick Time Player.  The saved segment is a MOV file.  I drag and drop the MOV file back into iTunes.  When I play it from iTunes, the quality still is good on all my Apple devices - no noticeable difference from the original.
Now, I import the MOV segment into iMovie 11 (version 9.0.8).  At import, I tick the Optimize Video check box and I select the Full - Original Size setting. Once imported, I select Share > Publish To iTunes.  I do not make any changes to the video clip in iMovie.  I publish to iTunes using all five size settings: Mobile, Medium, Large, HD 720p and HD 1080p.  Once in iTunes, I play the video again.  Now the quality is poor, lots of pixelation in all five size settings.
iMovie appears to be doing something to the video to degrade its quality.  Maybe I have a setting wrong somewhere.  Anyone have any suggestions on how to prevent the degradation in video quality?  Thx

Hey Brad, the MP4 movie in iTunes is 806 MB.  The segment I trimmed in QuickTime Player and saved as an MOV file is 18 MB.
When I export the MOV segment from QuickTime Player to my desktop, the export format options that appear are: Movie; 480p; 720p; and iPad, iPhone 4 & Apple TV.  Which do you recommend?
When I do Share > Export Using Quicktime in iMovie, there are a bunch of Export and Use options.  Which do you recomend?
    Thx

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • End video size

    hi,
i want to use imovie for some basic editting and rendering.
i have a load of mov's, captured using snapz pro x at 720x480 that i simply want to import, cut bits out, and export as one file for use in idvd.
    i have 2 questions...
    1. is there a way, in imovie, to change the end video size? im using 720x480 source files, and when i export as a movie it either crams it into a 640x480, or letterboxes it. i just want the output size to stay the same as the input size (720x480). if not, whats the optimum size people use for tv viewing?
    2. the content of my video is pretty intricate. its got a feint grey box in the middle of the screen, which the video plays in (screen in screen basically).
assuming that imovie will only give me 640x480 output, i cropped the clips to 640x480, inputted them, pieced them together, and outputed them. imovie gives me the right size, but really messes up the video. the grey line is blurred and not visible at the bottom, and the moving images themselves look awful.
all i want is to export a video that has the same properties (size, resolution etc) as the input files!
if screen grabs would help, i can put some up.
    thanks in advance

yes, i've had varied success with transferring screen grabs to tv. problem is, its the only option - im using a moving image enivronment (pure data) and the only way to save the video you create is through snapz (well, theres no way of saving it within the software).
one way i will try is to video out from the laptop into a tv and record with a dvd recorder, see if that helps.
i think its trial and error with the captures. the 720x480 looked pretty good, but the refresh rate was out and it flickered a fair bit. the refresh rate was better on 640x480, but it didnt look as good.
    thanks for the advice

  • Recording with iSight - Video Size option missing

Ok, I hope someone can help me. I record video directly into iMovie using the built in isight on my mac. On the import window using the camera I used to have the option on the bottom to select the video size (640x480 or 1024x576). For some reason this is missing (the bottom frame is blank except for the camera selection options).
I can't figure out how to get the higher resolution option back. Where did it go? Help!
    Thanks.

I now use iMovie9 and Lion 10.7.2.  The choice bar is gone for me, too!
To validate your experience, I started a new wide-screen project and imported from inbuilt iSight.  After dragging the new capture event into the new project, I clicked the "crop" button and found that all the resolution is still there!  I can  crop or re-frame by dragging the crop bars or area.  However, I cannot select the entire frame for inclusion in my project.
Based on this, it seems to me that full frame iSight recording has been sacrificed, probably so stabilization can use the edges.
Unless someone else knows a way, it seems to me that if we want the old choices bar back, we will need to retreat to an older version.

How do I get home video clips from iMovie Mac to iMovie iPad?  Surely there is some degree of cross-compatibility?  I have a load of clips in iMovie on my MBP that I wanna download to my iPad2 so that I can edit movies on the move.  Any ideas?  (The clips are in a .mov format, they have been imported / converted into this format in iMovie, original files were from a JVC camcorder in some other strange format.)

I copied the iTunes file from the external drive and it's in both places.  I thought all I would need is the iTunes program (which I downloaded to new computer) and my iTunes library file.  There must be something else that's missing.  My iTunes library looks the same on the new computer as it does when I open it on the external drive.  If I click on an iTunes library song from my new computer, it will only play if I have the external drive plugged in.
My back-up drive is a mess.  I have multiple copies of music, video, photo, and document files and I don't know how that happened. ={  Obviously, I don't know how to back up stuff properly and there are back-up files extending over a 6- to 8-year period.  I think all I did was just drag and drop the main folders from the back-up drive to the same main folders on the C: drive.  Also (and I'm kind of fuzzy on this) Windows used to automatically save music files in a folder within my document files (which makes no sense to me).  As my Jewish friends would say, "Oy Vey!"

  • How to move Projects and Events with iPhoto video included in iMovie '11?

I work with a group of educators using iPads for video. One method for getting their clips into iMovie '11 is via iPhoto and then using the iPhoto Video link in iMovie to get the footage on a timeline (trying to import directly into iMovie '11, using the iPad as a "camera", has proved inconsistent, especially with footage from iStopMotion or Filmic Pro 1 and 2).
The problem is, when it comes time to copy or move an event and project, the iPhoto clips don't come along; they are dependent on the iPhoto library, so you can't continue editing on a different machine. I tried File > Consolidate Media, but it was inactive (in my test project, all clips came from iPhoto). If I look at Reveal in Browser, it goes to the bowels of the iPhoto library. If I copy the project to another drive, it too, points to the iPhoto library (if I'm on the same machine; otherwise it doesn't see it). I also tried optimizing the footage in the hope that it would create an Event with optimized clips that I could then transfer.
Am I missing something? It seems nuts that you can't transfer work to another machine without manually picking through the bowels of iPhoto. These days, lots of shooting is done on iPads and iPhones. Any help would be appreciated.

My suggestion would be that in the future, they upload photos only to iphoto, and upload video clips directly to iMovie. In the early days of iOS, going through iPhoto was the only way, so it is a habit that I have had to break.
With iOS 5 and 6, iMovie now recognizes the iPhone and the iPad as cameras.
I agree that the Consolidate Media command should bring over iPHoto movies along with the photos. I suggest that you go to iMovie/Provide Feedback and let the developers know that you would like this feature.
