Video software cause Mac Pro to lose power
My Mac Pro has begun doing something very strange. On Mac OSX Snow Leopord or Lion, when using video conversion software (HandBrake or MacX Video Covnerter) My Mac Pro acts like it los power from the outlet as my UPS connected via USB starts alarming. If I let the software continue to run my Mac shuts down. It never did this before and I recently did a clean install of both OS versions and the software.I have tried disconneting the UPS and my Mac stills shuts down. I have also reinstalled the two video conversion softwares with the latest version and get the same results.
I could use some serious help here.
...and the overheading may be caused by dust. So when was the last time you blew the dust out?
Also, would go get the same overloading problem if you bypassed the UPS?

I'm having multiple crashes on my new 5s. I can't connect to my Mac Pro!! Power cord broken. How can I fix this without connecting to my MacBook? Very frustrating and disappointing. Please help!!!
Hi there Rlong50,
You may want to try force closing all open apps and resetting the device as an initial troubleshooting step. Take a look at the articles below for more information.

ATI 5770 1GB Video Card For Mac Pro dvi hdmi cable
I am sending video signal over a 50FT HDMI To DVI from my Mac Pro (3,1) via ATI 5770 1GB Video Card For Mac Pro (5.0 GT/s) (181062917108) and I cannot get a constant signal to my TV. The signal stays on for a few seconds or several hours or my TV (Samsung) says there is no signal or I get just a gray static screen.
I never had a problem before with my previous video card the 512MB nVidia GeForce 8800GT with a 25ft long cable. Any ideas people?A cable of about 5 meters (16 ft) can be manufactured to Category 1 specifications easily and inexpensively by using 28 AWG (0.081 mm²) conductors.[114] With better quality construction and materials, including 24 AWG (0.205 mm²) conductors, an HDMI cable can reach lengths of up to 15 meters (49 ft).[114]

You may need a higher-quality cable or a lower resolution for your display to make this work without an HDMI Repeater. -
How can I do Streaming Video from a Mac Pro
I want to set up a small family web site and run streaming video off my Mac Pro. Do I need to have OS X server to do this? Can I run OS X applications like Final Cut Express on OS X server?
You can run all the same apps on OS X server as on the client. for streaming video you may want to upgrade QuickTime to QT Streaming Server.

Mac Pro PCI Express Power "Booster Cable"
hey
anyone happen to buy that vid card power cable from welovemacs.com??
http://www.welovemacs.com/9227128.html
i'm planning to buy a pair.. but i'm not sure if it will fit....
one end plugs into the motherboard.. the other end goes into the vid card
but the question is does it fit the Mac Pro pci express power socket?
and the other end of it does it fit any standard pc vid card? or is it also smaller?
as i plan to buy this for my Mac Pro so i can power up the 8800 gtx
thanks!"Connecting the range extender to an Ethernet network so that the range extender could act as a wireless access point instead of a range extender."
Yes, I am essentially using it as an access point for the Mac Pro (attaching a simple ethernet cord in the back, it will automatically get a handshake with the network), and a wireless extender for my P.C. laptop and Power Mac G4.
If this doesnt work, I'm gonna move my cable modem and wireless router to my office (and attach Mac Pro directly to modem or router).
I dont want to have to buy a new Apple Router when I have a perfectly good D-link system going. It currently works with my roomates Powerbook and Airport Express Sation (air tunes), as we got it working last night. If all else fails, I wait till the new express card comes out and get it installed at my local store. -
My Mac Pro will not power on. I've replaced the power supply, still will not power on.
Is there anyone with a solution?Try a pram reset:

Going into my hard drive causes mac pro to lock up like fort knox
Hi, I have been a mac user for just a hair over a year.(Apple will not help me with anything)
All has been swell until now.
If I go into my hard drive my computer locks right up. I can do
nothing to move it along. The only option I have is to hold down the
power button for six seconds, which kills me and the computer a little
each time. I booted up the computer using the mac install disc and I
used disk utility to "repair" the disk. It reported the disk was "OK".
I thought swell, and went into documents on the hard disk and it
locked my computer up again. I let it sit there for an hour and
nothing moved. apple/option/esc does not do anything. I went into time machine and
went to the documents there and it locked up the computer too. I went into finder and went to documents and it locked up the computer. I went into other areas of the hard drive and it locked up the computer. The funny thing is I can go on the internet, use programs, read email, and everything works fine. Can anyone guide me in
the right direction in solving this problem I am facing?

<Edited by Moderator>Sounds like itneeds some good basic maintenance and troubleshooting. Stop using this drive. Start trashing temp files, and off loading good files.
Everytime you freeze and do a hard restart, the chance that the journal, directory, file system and data are compromised increases, in spite of the "OKAY" from Disk Utility's repair routines it is not reliable. And leads to false sense of security. Disk Utility only checks the basic directory, not the files themselves.
It may be something like a damaged Finder plist/preference, or worse, but either you look for an easy fix, or just start cleaning up and moving files and system to a good drive and system.
You may have bad blocks on your drive causing all this. Or not. TechTool can detect bad sectors, but not map them out. (Deluxe is part of AppleCare; or Pro, commercial version).
Start using SuperDuper if you don't already, and Disk Warrior, premiere for disk repairs.
http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
What you need to be doing is rebuild your system from the foundation up.
You may need to check out Data Rescue II demo from Prosoft Engineering to recover files.
I would begin by installing OS X on another drive, or restoring from TimeMachine. Create/name an "emergency" boot drive partition. Doesn't need to be that large. Keep it handy just for doing repairs and maintenance. Keep another as a clone of your working system and backup - in addition to TimeMachine.
You may want to start by erasing the drive (not just the OS volume) with a 7-way write (not just zero all, it does NOT do a reliable safe job mapping out bad blocks) and restore from TimeMachine. Or work with a new drive. -

So I have to reboot manual with holding power button, but cannot load osx (blank screen), I try to hold smc reset button, don't work too.
So I unplug and plug the memory raiser, so finally everything back to normal. It can loading osx snow leopard normally.
So what is the problem?
Thank you,
DavidIt's a hardware fault. I suggest you make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have it tested. It's a free service. The repair won't be free, but if it's something simple, such as a bad memory module, you may be able to fix it yourself.

Need help with video on older Mac Pro
I have a 2008 Mac Pro that more than meets all of the specs for FCP X, except the Mac App store won't let me buy and download because the video card in the system doesn't meet specs. I've found an apple support page that lists the compatible video cards for FCP X. Here's my issues:
1. Most of the cards on the list are older and not easily obtainable anymore.
2. Even with models that are newer, it's had to find one labeled for Mac - so can I just use any old model of, say, a Radeon HD 5670 or do I need one specificlaly made for Macs?
3. Bottom line is what card can I use in a 2008 Mac Pro that will meet the specs and that I can actually purchase?
Thanx...Jonjhyiesla wrote:

A Radeon HD 5670 is a Radeon HD 5670 - if it's on the compatible list, it will work in your Mac.
This is my pet checklist for questions regarding FCP X performance - you may have already addressed some of the items but it's worth checking.
Make sure you're using the latest version of the application - FCP X 10.0.5 runs very well on my 2009 MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB. I run it with Lion 10.7.5.
First, check that you have at least 20% free space on your system drive.
For smooth playback without dropping frames, make sure 'Better Performance' is selected in the FCP X Preferences - Playback Tab.
If you have not already done so, move your Projects and Events to a fast (Firewire 800 or faster) external HD. Make sure the drive's formatted OS Extended (journalling's not required for video). You should always keep at least 20% free space on the Hard Drives that your Media, Projects and Events are on.
Check the spec of your Mac against the system requirements:
http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/
Check the spec of your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended.
Keep projects to 20 mins or less. If you have a long project, work on 20 min sections then paste these into a final project for export.
If you ever experience dropped frames, I strongly recommend you use ProRes 422 Proxy - it edits and plays back like silk because the files are small but lightly compressed (not much packing and unpacking to do) - but remember to select 'Original or Optimised Media' (FCP X Preferences > Playback) just before you export your movie, otherwise it will be exported at low resolution.
If you have plenty of processor power, for the ultimate editing experience, create Optimised Media - most camera native files are highly compressed and need a great deal of processor power to play back - particularly if you add titles, filters or effects. ProRes 422 takes up much more hard drive space but is very lightly compressed. It edits and plays back superbly.
Hide Audio Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power. (Use the switch icon at the bottom-right of your timeline to select a format without waveforms if you don't need them at the moment, then switch back when you do).
Create folders in the Project and Events libraries and put any projects you are not working on currently, in those folders. This will help a lot. There's a great application for this, called Event Manager X - for the tiny cost it's an invaluable application.
http://assistedediting.intelligentassistance.com/EventManagerX/
Unless you cannot edit and playback without it, turn off Background Rendering in Preferences (under Playback) - this will help general performance and you can always render when you need to by selecting the clip (or clips) and pressing Ctrl+R.
The biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.

Mac Pro 8-core Power Supply Making Humming Noise That Comes And Goes
This is in reference to a Mac Pro 3,1 8-core purchased around Feb 2008.
Lately, I've noticed a strange noise coming from my power supply that sounds like the noise a refrigerator radiator makes. It's a humming noise that rapidly comes and goes, constantly.
The power supply fan speed is running at 599rpm
I'm not sure if the problem could've been caused by adding additional ram (12GB, OWC) or an additional HDD (3rd HDD, WD), but I didn't really notice the noise until after adding these components.
What could be the cause of this problem? What are my repair options if necessary (without Apple Care)?
Thanks in advance.I know for a fact it is not any of my hard drives because the noise is becoming more frequent no matter what hard drive I use, I actually have a 1.5tb, a 1tb, two 500gb and two 320gb drives, I have set an appointment to take my system in and have it tested, it is starting to crash 5-6 times a day. I can not get a lot of work done with this annoying spinning noise and the shutting down. Thank god for my Apple care, and I have visited various forums that lead me to believe its the power supply going out, with the symptoms it is having. This article and others like it explain what to look for when a power supply is going bad.

I have a Mac Pro 12 core, with a Nvidia Quadro Pro 4000 video card. I have been using lightroom with this video card since 2011 without a problem. I updated to os 10.7.5, which apple says it is the latest f and now when i use lightroom (after about 15 minutes), my monitor goes black, which i am sure is a video card issue which involves lightroom settings, and i have to restart my system. After restart I get a kernel panic report. I unistalled lightroom, and had no crashes. I reinstalled it and i started to get computer crashes again. (not lightroom crashes but computer -) When i open lightroom, the color labels appear saturated and much darker than usual. I took a screenshot www.jlanceimaging.com/lrscreenshot.jpg.
Since updating to 10.7.5 i have had this issue with lightroom and the video card.
I also went into photoshop an unchecked the graphics processor but still got the crashes.
and last;y, i opened up lightroom 4 and had no problemsYou don't say what, if anything, you have done to test, resolve or rule out causes, so you can always assume hard restarts, freezes, and not safe shutdowns will make for more problems (corrupt files, file system, directory, etc).
Running Apple Hardware Test; Reset SMC; repairing your drives; ruling out cables, controllers, external devices, even drivers for printers and other devices.
If you are on a UPS, it should be 1000VA or larger (1300-1500VA). If there are other devices and you could be exceeding the load on circuit breaker, also worth looking into and sometimes requires adding a new circuit line.

No Flash Video Playback on Mac Pro with Leopard
I recently purchased a Mac Pro with Leopard, Final Cut Studio
2, and Adobe Production Premium suite. I got everything setup
yesterday, and I exported a Quicktime reference file from Final
Cut, and brought it into Flash CS3 Media Encoder. The file seemed
to encode fine, but when I try to open it, it shows that the Flash
Player opens, but the video never actually opens. I also tired to
import the FLV file into Flash Pro, and it acts as though it
imports, but it does let me preview it. The ONLY thing that I think
could have caused a problem is that I also have Sorenson Squeeze
installed, which has its own On2 VP6 encoder. Again, this may have
nothing to do with it since I copied the file to another Mac
machine that did not have Sorenson on it, and downloaded the
standalone Flash Player, and it acted the same. Any ideas on why
FLV files would not play back would be greatly appreciated. I have
ALL updates installed for OS X Leopard, as well as the CS3
collection. Thanks in advance.I really appreciate your help with this. As simple as it
sounds, I was really wrapped up in getting a second HD editing
suite up and running, and had not done my homework. Prior to your
post, I tried to play 5 different FLV files on 3 machines. None of
them played until I downloaded a great FLV player. Once I installed

My early 2008 Mac Pro is dropping the signal to the monitor and the fan on the back begins to run at max speed. I have to do a force shut down and start again. It will then run ok for several hours. This typically happens when it wakes up, I log in and begin doing a task. However, it has been known to do this at a random time. This has progressed to a once a day event mostly in the morning after it has been sleeping for several hours.
I pulled the cover when it did it last and pressed the diagnostic button. LED's for the GPU and PWRG did not light.
I am wondering if it is the power supply beginning to fail or if it is the logic board or, is it something else.
Can anyone help with this?
Thank you

The sensor X shows the reading Y. Is this normal?
If you want to find out whether a sensor value is within normal limits, please select the menu item Window > Show Overview (or press ⌘+1) and look for the limits in the third and fourth columns of the sensor table. They contain the known official limits Apple has specified for readings acquired at the given sensor locations. If no limit is given in the table, this either means that it does not make sense to specify a limit for this particular sensor (e.g. the battery capacity should not have limits), or Apple hasn't published any specifications for this sensor.
Note that all up-to-date Macintosh models automatically shut down or enter sleep mode if one of the readings exceeds a critical limit. For this reason it is impossible that your computer can be damaged in an overtemperature condition.
For old computers without temperature managment, no limits have been specified by Apple. In this case use the following limits as orientation:
Most older G3 or G4 processors are designed for a maximum operating temperature of 105 degrees Celsius (221 degrees Fahrenheit), measured at the chip die of the CPU.
G4 processors of type 7455 or later (typically used in Macintosh systems with 867 MHz and above) are designed for a maximum operating temperature of 65 degrees Celsius (149 degrees Fahrenheit), also measured at the chip die of the CPU.
Most desktop hard drives are specified for a maximum operating temperature of 55 degrees Celsius (131 degrees Fahrenheit). For exact information, use the Drive Overview window (⌘+8) to get the manufacturer and model code of your hard drive, and then direct your web browser to the manufacturer's web site to download the official data sheet for this drive. The temperature limits are always specified.

And don't forget you can look at the fan speeds (there are several in the Mac Pro) - that sometimes will give you a hint something abnormal is going on if the fans start running a lot. -

It says my mac pro (2006-2007) model had PCIe slots, but it doesn't mention PCI 2.0 slots. i'm looking to upgrade my video card to one of the better ones for this computer. currently i have a radeon x1900 XT 512 card. it can get clunky at times. I've been reading a lot about the Radeon HD5770, but it says it works with PCI 2.0. i've been reading that a lot of people that currently have the x1900 XT upgrade to the HD5770. but I don't want to buy an incompatible one. I just did that on my RAM and had to return it.
Does anyone know if this card will work? and will both mini display ports work as well?
or do you have a better suggestion for an upgrade?
i don't do a whole lot of gaming, but i like having a junky desktop with 30 browser windows open and 10 other programs open at the same time. i would like a card that is good for that. thanks again!OpenGL 3.2 support15

Barefeats: adding the Radeon HD 5870 or 5770 to your 2006 Mac Pro won't cause it to "leap tall buildings in a single bound." But these new cards will help you "clear low buildings with a running start."
OpenGL 2.1 Released on July 2, 2006. Where is the 4.2 support, or even 3.2 support??
Apple lags by over half a decade and has not done much to modernize graphic driver support to current available standards.
OpenGL 4.2 Released on 8 August 2011[33]
Supported Cards: Nvidia GeForce 400 series, Nvidia GeForce 500 series, Nvidia GeForce 600 series, ATI Radeon HD 5000 series, AMD Radeon HD 6000 Series, AMD Radeon HD 7000 Series
Support for shaders with atomic counters and load/store/atomic read-modify-write operations to a single level of a texture.
Capturing GPU-tessellated geometry and drawing multiple instances of the result of a transform feedback to enable complex objects to be efficiently repositioned and replicated.
Support for modifying an arbitrary subset of a compressed texture, without having to re-download the whole texture to the GPU for significant performance improvements.
Support for packing multiple 8 and 16 bit values into a single 32-bit value for efficient shader processing with significantly reduced memory storage and bandwidth.

OpenCL 1.1 was ratified by the Khronos Group on 14 June 2010 - "Hello, that is full two years ago." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenCL#cite_note-11
OpenCL 1.2 On 15 November 2011, the Khronos Group announced the OpenCL 1.2 specification,[13] which added significant functionality over the previous versions in terms of performance and features for parallel programming. Most notable features include:
Device partitioning: the ability to partition a device into sub-devices so that work assignments can be allocated to individual compute units. This is useful for reserving areas of the device to reduce latency for time-critical tasks.
Separate compilation and linking of objects: the functionality to compile OpenCL into external libraries for inclusion into other programs.
Enhanced image support: 1.2 adds support for 1D images and 1D/2D image arrays. Furthermore, the OpenGL sharing extensions now allow for OpenGL 1D textures and 1D/2D texture arrays to be used to create OpenCL images.
