  • Apple developer notes on video format for iPod, Apple TV and iPhone

I have been doing a bit of searching on information for converting video for the Apple TV and came across this web-page which contains technical information of converting video for the iPod, Apple TV and iPhone.
If you are after information on bitrates, b-frames, levels, profiles, low-complexity, etc. then this may help:
    http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2007/tn2188.html
What is interesting to note, whilst 5Mbps is the maximum bitrate, the Apple TV supports spikes up to 12Mbps.
Happy reading and please feel free to add more links to useful information on the video format for the Apple TV.

I have downloaded the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - Trailer #2 .mov file and this streams quite happily on the Apple TV. This has a total bitrate of 6505Kbps and an audio bitrate of 192Kbps @ 48KHz and video 23.98fps @ 1280x544.
So, according to the Apple TV spec., the audio is well above 160Kbps and the video bitrate is well above 5Mbps. So why does it play at all on the Apple TV let alone stream without stuttering? Maybe its because the video height is 544 rather than the full 720, but why does the Apple TV get to see it?
I don't know the answers, just offering this as an example of a video that is freely available for anyone to try out which clearly exceeds some of the maximum specs for the Apple TV.
Has anyone found or got anything that beats this?

  • Embedded videos won't play in Safari on iPhone 5 iOS 8.02

All of a sudden I can't play any embedded YouTube videos in safari from my iPhone 5. I think the issue started when I upgraded to iOS 8.02.
I can see the screenshot of the video, and the red and white play button in safari, but it isn't clickable. I can click on the word youtube in the upper right hand corner of the picture and it will launch the YouTube app and then the video will play from the YouTube app, but never from safari anymore.
I've tried closing the safari app, clearing safari history, resetting the iphone, downloaded Google chrome, and even tried to use my RSS reader to view the webpage. They all do the same thing, and none will let me click the play button to watch the embedded video.
Anyone have any ideas?  This is driving me crazy!  Thanks!

After some messing around, I found out that I can't press the red/white play button on the middle of the picture. For some reason, that isn't clickable anymore. Instead, if I press anywhere on the picture preview except for the red/white play button, then the video will play fine.
I Don't remember having to do that before, but at least I can watch embedded videos again.

I've encoded some footage using the Compressor iTV preset and it looks pretty dang good on the iPad.
Transferred using iTunes. Source was DVCProHD and some 1080/60p. Yep, 60p.
We have a component out for our iPhone, and using that out to a Pioneer HDTV produced acceptable footage, but definitely not HD.
On the iPad - wow. No hiccups at all, unlike two net books we owned

  • What is the best device for playing music from my iphone 4 through my car stereo via Bluetooth?

Do Apple recommend any products or do they sell one?

Apple does not recommend nor sell any.  Read online stereo reviews and form your own opinion as to what what's best.

  • Trying to covert video for play on IPhone

i downloaded a couple of music videos, not from itunes. i can't drag it into my iphone for play without converting it, so i converted it. after i converted it and put it in my iphone, only video w/ no audio? how do i get the audio to work?
    thanks

I use VisualHub to convert videos for playback on the iPhone.
Another great app is CosmoPod. You can download and convert Flash videos (like from YouTube) on-the-fly. It formats them perfectly for the iPhone.

  • Dynex Component Audio/Video cable for iPhone doesn't just play music?

I just purchased Dynex Component Audio/Video cable for iPhone and it plays video, but not music. It only works when I'm using Neflix or the video component of the iPod. How do I get it to just play my music?
If I run the iPod music and open Netflix the music will play, but that is just a roundabout way of getting it to play audio and is silly. How do I get it to just play audio?

don't think so but the component rely on normal analog signals using RCA connectors
you can find tons of 3.5mm minijack connector and 2 rca connectors in the other cables
they are dirt cheap and you can even make them yourself

  • No QuickTime support for playing video?

I have an iPhone 3G and a iPhone 3GS, I might just have never noticed it before but I recently tried to play a .mov file on my server via an HTML file (that plays on my PC and Mac) through iPhone's Safari with no sucess. I find it rather interesting given the 3GS capability to record Video and the iPhone being able to play video from Itunes and Youtube that it doesn't seem to support Apple's native Quicktime format to play .mov files from the internet.
Am I doing something wrong or missing something? I have 3.0 OS on both phones.

The iPhone includes QuickTime support - you can watch videos via Apple's website and other websites with video provided via QT, but the video must be in the proper format for the iPhone. YouTube converted all YouTube video for the iPhone's YouTube app in QuickTime format or in a video format that is supported with the iPhone via QT.
    Copied from this link.
    http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html
Video formats supported: H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

  • HT1399 Why cant I create a playlist for my music/song videos? Continuous play is also not possible in the video app on the phone!!!! previously, prior to IOS 6, it was possible to have both music videos & songs mixed in the same playlist in the music app

Why cant I create a playlist for my music/song videos? Continuous play is also not possible in the video app on the phone!!!! previously, prior to IOS 6, it was possible to have both music videos & songs mixed in the same playlist in the music app

I am back with an update. I turned off Match on both the ipad and the iphone 5. By doing so I was able to sync my Iphone and ipad to itunes and store the music on my devices rather than the slow streaming.  So far this has fixed my problems with the iphone I have all my music, playlist, most of the album art and so on.  But the ipad is a different story.  I have the music and artist but not one playlist  I am sure Apple will have an upgrade soon that will address these issues they are usually very good about this.
Now have any of you experienced another problem that has existed as long as I have used faces in Aperture.
I have over 200 faces and they are organized a-z problem is I have this going on A-Z folowed by a few that start over A-Z followed by another few A-Z and again a 4th time A-Z.  Imagine how difficult it is while I am showing someone the great features of my iphone, ipad and imac.  Which I do talk highly of all the time.  But how do I explain that even though their name starts with a or b or what ever they are not important enough to me to be in the first list of A-Z or even the 2nd or 3rd list of A-Z someohow they are in the 4th section of the list!!!!
I have managed to get the Imac to fix this but for some reason the IOS devices do not.   Any ideas?
    Thanks Al

  • For the past few days videos are not playing properly. They appear to load but stop and start, even though the line of thumbnails shows up at the bottom. Clicking play does nothing.

There seems to be a major problem with video playbacks both from web sites and YouTube. If I click on a video the loading circle shows it is loading but either the video starts for 2-3 seconds and stops, or it won't start at all. At the bottom of the screen there is a section that shows individual thumbnails for the video and that shows that the video has loaded, but it refuses to play. I just tried a youtube video on my iPhone and the same thing is happening. Some occasional videos seem to work okay but I have spent much time trying to watch clips.

Use SpeedTest to test the speed of your internet.  If slow, contact your ISP to confirm if the problem is on their end.
You have 2 versions of QT.  Version 7.x is inside your Utility folder.  Try that one.

  • IPod Video Specs Inaccurate?  I can sync/play 720x400 mp4 files

The stated max resolution for iPod videos on the tech spec pages is 640 maximum width for both h.264 and mpeg4.
I was ripping some files for play on my aTV at 720 resolution (both h.264 and mp4 for comparison) and noticed that some of them were syncing and playing on my iPod as well. Turns out that the 720x400 format in the mpeg4 encoding will sync and play on my 60gb (5.0gen) iPod.
Anyone know if this is just luck, a fluke, or some change in iTunes/iPod firmware from Apple? If a change, Apple needs to change the published specs.
The other explanation is that older video iPods have higher resolution capability; but that doesn't seem likely.

Its not a matter of max width, but # of pixels. The max # of pixels is 640x480, which is 307,200. In a full frame video, 640 would be the max resolution horizontaly. A video at 720x400 is only 288,000, therefore fits into the max # of pixels with room to spare. Apples specs are based off full frame video.
OFF TOPIC, but deals with apples specs. What i find cool is that the specs say max frame rate is 30 FPS, but ive run pleanty of 60 FPS mpeg4s and they work just fine.

  • What are the specs for iPod video

i wish to manually convert .mov (video with audio) to vPod format.
anyone know where there is a list of the specs required, movie size, format, audio format?
i'm trying to figure out the following:
i have two movies of like nature. i drop ,them both in iTunes. i tell iTunes to convert for iPod and it says one does not need conversion. i am trying to figure out why the other does. they are both 44.1/h.264.
what is the movie size spec and all the specs for QT to vPod conversion? (i want do to it manually.)
i think i have it, is this correct: 320x180 (16:9). i assume vPod can play both 48.hz audio and that that does not have to be converted to 44.1 (both aac)?

    QT Kirk is simply saying
you can make the file you dropped on the script in
order to make it uneditable editable once again by
loading the file in a hexidecimal editor utility and
"zeroing out" the code that makes it uneditable.
yes, i wanted to know which file to edit the script or the 'locked' movie --the .mov, thanks.
    .mov
    Format: AAC,Stereo (L R), 44.100kHz, H.264 Decoder,
    391 x 216, Millions
    FPS: 29.97
    Data Size: 58.25
    Data Rate: 536.90 kbits/sec
    Normal Size: 391 x 216 pixels
    Current Size: 391 x 216 pixels
    (Actual)
The information cited does not include information regarding
the H.264 profile used to create it. If created using the QT
"Movie to QuickTime Movie > H.264" export option,
then the file would not be iPod compatible since this
workflow employs the "Main" profile. In a similar
manner, if the file was created using the QT "Movie
to MPEG-4" Export option, it would have been created
using either the "Main" or "Baseline" profile.
However, based on your dimensions, iTunes expects the
file to be created using the "Baseline Low Compexity"
profile and proceeds to correct the situation.
how can you do that via QTP expert options? if you can. i create a lot of web movies and wish to 'feed 2 birds with one piece of bread'. (i like birds.
    if these are the only
conversion for iPod tools apple offers...
    why?
    QT Pro/iTunes currently
offers the use of two H.264 iPod compatible,
automatically adaptive workflows (Baseline LC and
Baseline) and QT Pro additionally offers one full
manual iPod compatible H.264 workflow (Baseline
profile) and one full manual MPEG-4 workflow. As to
why the QT "Movie to iPod" and iTunes workflows are
auto-adaptive, most users simply want to have iPod
compatible files when they want them and don't want
to learn how to make them properly with respect to
each compression format and/or profile requirement
and/or special case considerations (dimensions, data
rates, frame rates, key frame frequency, aspect
    ratio, macroblock efficiency considerations, etc).
yes, i wish to... well, i said that above, create web and ipod in 'one fell swoop'. i suppose these ipod auto-adaptive modes will work for web, but i'd rather use the expert options. i would like to "learn how to make them properly".
    > ok .m4v is h.264.
    Rather loosely stated. The
".m4v" extension refers to the file container while
H.264 refers to the actual video compression
algorithm. In this case the H.264 video format is
specifically stored in this file container. One the
other hand, the ".mp4" file container is a more
generic MPEG-4 file container commonly used for
either MPEG-4 or H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) video compressed
files. And, at the other end of the scale, the ".mov"
file container is the most generic since it can
basically contain any "supported" compression format
to include either MPEG-4/AAC or H.264/AAC iPod
compatible files. One key to remember here is that
file containers, like the compression formats that
they can contain, have specific "characteristics."
For instance, ".m4v" and ".mp4" file containers can
have one external piece of graphic "artwork"
associated with it (as seen in iTunes), but the
    ".mov" container cannot.
i did not know that .mp4 also served for h.264. the graphic container of .m4v i had sort of noticed, however i did not or had not for .mov, thanks.
Your file did not conform to
the required "Baseline LC" profile and so iTunes
converted it. Since the "LC" profile defaults to a
video data rate on the order of 1500 Kbps, your file
size was nearly doubled for the specific duration of
    your clip.
i'm not sure i understand why my data rate was converted where a lesser data rate was not. (536 vs. 262)
thanks very much for this 'training'.

  • Acceptable video formats for iPhone

I am attempting to download music videos and movies to my iPhone. I've found in the past the mp4 files work for videos, but recently, mp4 files have not been working. I get a message saying that the file is not compatible with iPhone. Any suggestions???

Just because a file is a mpeg4 video does not mean it is iPod/iphone compatible.
It must meet certain specs regarding bit rate, resolution, etc.
Apple spells these specs out in the tech specs found on Apple.com.
    Here they are:
    Video formats supported: H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
    H.264 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

  • What is the best compression for HDV 1080i60 video to be played on iTunes?

    Hello guys,
I would like to make an HDV video podcast for iTunes and possibly for other podcasting sites. My source format is HVD 1080i60, each episode would be about 10 minutes long. So I am wondering what format, compression and settings work best while keeping reasonable quality.
Thank you for any tip or advise.

One thing I forgot to mention: the Apple TV setting H.264 file won't play on an iPod. If you did need an iPod/iPhone compatible version, then the export setting to use would be Movie to iPod. This will make a 640x360 file. The full explanation of the differences between iPod and Apple TV formats is at http://www.apple.com/itunes/store/podcaststechspecs.html#formattingvideo

  • Can't get video podcasts to play on my Iphone

When I download them, they display properly in ITunes in the little video window. However, when I try playing them from my Iphone, I get audio only. What gives? Thanks for any help!
    - robjohn

This is an area where the iPhone does not work like the iPod with Video.
In my case, I create a series of playlists called "Podcasts 1 Day Ago", "Podcasts 2 Days Ago", etc. so I can sort through them in order that I added them. On the iPod, going in to Playlists-> will just play the audio for the videos in that list, but going in through Movies->Video Playlists will play audio and switch on video when it hits a video podcast. Works great.
On iPhone, this does not work. It ignores video items in the playlist, but if you manually allow the specified podcasts to sync they will show up under video. So you have to do it in multiple places, and can't just rely on a playlist like the iPod does.
    Maybe version 1.1?
