Video Storage format

I use a MiniDV camcorder. I import into iMovie08 to edit.
To store my movies I decided not to use the DVD format. I want them to be a long time inversion so don't want to face in 20 o 30 years the fact that there's no DVD players and having to convert hours and hours of video.
On the other hand I want the movies to be able to be played in a TV.
Will be a multimedia hard drive a good solution for me?
They seem to read mp4 format, does this mean that they can read h.264? I have experimented and it seem the best compresion with the best quality.
I also read about AppleTV, is this a better solution? I think is not because you need the computer, the AppleTV device and the hard disk where you have stored the video, while with a multimedia hard drive you just have to plug the drive to the Tv. I am right?
Any sugestions will be very apreciated. For me it's been a nightmare to decide a way to store my family videos that will not give me in the future trouble.

I doubt that any electronic/digital medium will last for twenty years. You're best and cheapest bet would be to keep the original tapes (properly stored) and dub them to new tapes every five years or so. As new technology emerges, copy the tapes to the new medium.

    What is the best way to set up an external drive for video storage?

    Check the formatting. It need to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). This is also known as HFS+.
    FAT32 and NTFS formatting will not work with iMovie.
    If necessary, you can reformat using Disk Utility.
    Make one large partition. No need for multiple partitions.
    Do moves or copies to the external drive through iMovie as detailed in iMovie Help. If you move Events in the Finder, they may become unlinked from the projects that use them.

  • Prosumer video storage: sub $1000 firewire solutions

    This question has been asked before [1], but that thread went in a different direction.
    I want to edit and manage about 0.7 to 1.0 TB of family video on hard drives, perhaps using FCPX. My home backup and data management won't scale to this level.
    I'd like to hear what other prosumers do for $1000 or less (I assume professional setups are different.)
    I'm assuming something like this:
    3 1TB drives
    RAID 0 setup with two drives (OS X RAID?)
    Periodically take one drive offsite, the mirror rebuilds. (So only real backup is offsite backup, every year retire one drive and add another)
    Mac formatted drives (so presumably not SAN/Drobo, though low-end DROBO is in my price range)
    I assume over time, as drive capacity grows, I'll integrate my video storage with my other data use/backup. For a few years though they'll be different. For example: Video work would kill my Time Capsule Wifi backup.
    Any suggestions? What vendors do you like?

    Sorry, got my RAIDs switched! I do want redundancy.
    I use CCC as a Time Capsule complement for routine backup, so I could go that route rather than RAID.
    I woud like a solution where I didn't have to deal with multiple power cords and multiple data connectors.
    What do you think of the LaCie d2 or 2big solutions? They have a new thunderbolt series out with MacOS RAID (so presumably FCPX compatible)
    http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?id=10573
    The LaCie 2Big 4TB solution is $650. With a 3rd drive to swap offsite I'd be in budget.
    The Pegasus R4 Thunderbolt solution is a bit higher end, but is sold through the Apple store:

    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H5184VC/A/Thunderbolt
    At $1150 it's over my budget, but it's something to think about ...

    Can I use two Time Capsules? one as an extension of my laptop (for music and video storage) and the other one to back up everything from the laptop and  Time Capsule (for music and videos)

    Not via Time Machine.   It cannot back up from a network location.
    The 3rd-party apps CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync may be workable alternatives.
    EDIT:  And, if you're going to do that, you could back up from the Time Capsule to a USB drive connected to the TC's USB port.  Second TC not required.

    http://www.flip4mac.com/ supports all but DRM formatted Windows video.  http://www.videolan.org/ and MPEG4Streamclip may support additional.  DRM Windows video may require running Windows natively on your Mac.  Or requesting the source give you an MPEG4 compatible format or Realplayer formatted file.  Running Windows is described here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2741

  • What's the best choice re video file format in a camera for iDVD production

    I currently am using a Sony DSC H1 digital camera which does shoot video in MPEG 1. I use MPEG Streamclip to convert those clips to MPEG 4. The results on my TV screen after processing through iMovie and iDVD are "acceptable" but I will want to upgrade to a good video camera at some point to expand my capabilities. My question is - what video file format should I look for in a camera in order to produce the easiest to work with and best quality result from my iMac?? I am using iMovie HD 5.0.2 and iDVD 5.0.1. Thanks for any suggestions.

    that's what the iApps are meant for...
    a superior pic quality can be accomplished with socalled 3ccd cameras, as from Panasonic...
    HD (=HiDef) offers much more detail/quality, but is (yet) not supported natively to any disk-delivery format (Apple supports the BluRay consortium); external BluRay Burners (=$$$$) come bundled with a special HD-edition of Toast7...

  • XML binary storage format impairs schema validation?

    I'm using Oracle 11g R1 on Windows Server 2003. I successfully registered schemas and created tables and indexes in the new binary storage format. However, when trying to load data, I'm running into problems. Schema validation behaves as if not the full feature set of XML Schema mysteriously isn't supported anymore.
    There is probably more but at least wildcard elements (xs:any) and element references (xs:element ref="STH") are simply ignored in the schema definition and data is rejected even when it conforms to the schema.
    Is there any solution for this or am I out of luck? I wanted to go back to CLOB storage as used in a previous installation but I'm running into problems when registering the schema. It complains about an empty SQL name although I don't have any defined. I'm pretty weirded out by all this.
    I created the schema and table in a straightforward way:
    begin
      dbms_xmlschema.registeruri(
        schemaurl => 'http://www.xxxhello.com/archive_tsd.xsd',
        schemadocuri => '/public/user/archive_tsd.xsd',
        gentypes => FALSE,
        options => DBMS_XMLSCHEMA.REGISTER_BINARYXML
    end;
    CREATE TABLE archive OF xmltype XMLTYPE STORE AS binary xml XMLSCHEMA
    "http://www.xxxhello.com/archive_tsd.xsd" ELEMENT "CompleteDocument";
    create index idx_lastmodified_archive on archive t
    (extractvalue(VALUE(t),'/CompleteDocument/DocContent/LastModified'));Because of xs:any or element references is ignored, I get errors like
    LSX-00213: only 0 occurrences of particle "REFDELEM", minimum is 1.
    Thanks for your help.

    The schema is very large (>200kb). Where should I upload it or can I send it to you? I'm bit concerned about confidentiality of company data. However, the instance is not valid yet. I'm in the process of modifying the schema to match all instances, but it breaks on places that should be already okay. No, I didn't use SchemaValidate ever.
    But I've made an example where at least xs:any doesn't work. Element references work, though.
    Sample schema:

  • External storage for early 08 mac pro for video storage and editing

    Early 08 Mac Pro mod 3.1, 2x Intel 2.8 Quad Core Processors. Bus speed 1.6 Ghz.  10 GB DDR2 FB-Dimm 800 MHz. USB2, Firewire 400, 800. ATI Radeon HD 2600 PCIe 256 mbVRAM.  Currently running OS 10.6.8.
    I use machine for photo and video storage and editing. I tried using 2x 3TB and 2x1TB HDD internally ( 8 TB total).  All are Seagate Barracuda SATA 7200.  Experienced constant spinning wheel and lockup requiring manual shutdown.  I had upgraded to Lion and to Maverick.  Did not help so I did a clean install of primary with  Snow Leopard and did not install past 10.6.8.  Works now if I don’t exceed 3.5 TB internally.  I also discovered that my Disk Permissions experienced voluminous corruption that could not be repaired if I installed  Java for Mac OS 10.6 Update 17 as suggested each time I check for software updates.
    I need to be able to have a total of about six TBs available in my system for storage and editing of video via Imovie. I don’t know the maximum of HDD storage that can be used in the four internal bays without causing lockup and corruption. If 3.5 TB is about the max, then I would like to have some ability to have external storage via firewire 800 if that would facility fast enough transfer for either video edition and or playback. I don’t know if thunderbolt can be installed via PCI card. I could add a SATA PCI card.  However, I assume that would cause the same problem as experienced with 8 TBs installed internally in the four bays.
    I would appreciate any suggestions.

    Do you mean 2x2TB and 2x3TB for a total internal capacity of 10TBs?  Are you running Snow Leopard or something else? Actually, I took it to an authorized repair facility who ran checks and said nothing is wrong with the hardware.
    Yes, I've got a total of to TB and I'm running Snow Leopard.  If your hardware checks out, that pretty much makes it a software problem,,,  reinstall the OS?
    Does the High Point Technologies SATA3 PCIe connect to eternal drive enclosures or does it somehow connect to drives in some of your four internal bays?
    Highpoint makes several RocketRAID 2700 series SATA3 controllers for Mac with external mini-SAS connectors, probably the cleanest/least expensive external hook-up. They also offer a combo internal/external board that (for marketing reasons) is listed as not working for internals with Mac Pro.  I believe that this is due to pressure from Apple (who apparently does some business with High Point Tech) but to the best of my knowledge it will. Technically, the "not supported" statement is true since all the internal bays are tied to the motherboard SATA 2 controller, but this can be remedied with a special cable.  HOWEVER... the boards are not bootable, so your system disk needs to be on the motherboard controller.
    In truth, I bought one of their 8-port "internal only" boards designated for PC only and flashed it so the Mac Pro sees it as a 2722 board, so I have 8 internal ports.  I'm not recommending you do the same unless you're pretty geeky, but the 2721 would give you half-and-half or the 2722 would give you 8 external with no mods to the board.

  • Most efficient video file format

    Hi - I have been trying to use FMLE to stream video files to Ustream. I am using several virtual camera programs at the moment like ManyCam, Fake Webcam (does not work with FMLE apparently), etc. If I understand correctly what is happening - the virtual cam software is decoding the video files (flv, xvid, mp4, etc.) into raw video such as comes from a webcam. I assume FMLE is then recoding that raw video back into Flash flv or vp6?
    The process is proving to be very CPU intensive. And it seems pointless to undo a FLV file just to have FMLE turn around and rebuild it back to FLV. I am assuming here since I am not certain what FMLE is doing exactly.
    Is there a "best" video file format to start with in this process? Or better yet, can I do ahead of time to my video files what FMLE is doing to them so I can send them up to Ustream's servers ready to go and avoid the performance hit with all the real time processing the virtual cam software and FMLE are doing? Thanks for any insight on this!

    You can play the file directly from FMS as VOD. Also you can write your own action script publisher which can take input from any device and can stream to FMS but Flash player does not support many functionality like FMLE. It can stream VP6 video only.

  • Correct Video file format for itouch

    I download some videos on the internet, then i convert them to mp4 and sync them to my ipod touch. But how come the quality of these videos are very bad. Everything appears on the screen is not clear. It is completely different to the videos that i watch on Youtube ( an app in ipod touch) High definition, supper clear. Anyone knows any video file format that make the quality better to watch ! Pls let me know. I tried Quicktime, mpg. For these files, i was able to put them into my itunes but i could not sync them. Dont know why? I even tried avi, mov, but i could not even put them into my itunes. The only file format that accepted by itunes was mp4 . But the quality of the videos after syncing them to ipod was very awful. Pls let me know what i can do.

    Usually the file converting software will have a preset for an iPod Touch and all you have to do is select it and the software does the rest. Handbrake is one of those software to convert videos.
    Below is a quick synopsis of the specs I use to convert a video to be viewed on an iPod Touch:
    Understand the video file requirements for iPod Touch videos. Before jumping in and attempting to convert a file, it may be beneficial to understand the overall video requirements that a file must meet in order to play on an iPod Touch. The requirements include:
    Video Format: Mp4, MOV, MV4
    Video Size: Up to 640 X 480
    Video Framerate: Up to 30 frames/second
    Video Bitrate: up to 2.5Mbps for MP4
    Audio: AAC up to 160kbps
    Step 1
    Open iPod Touch video converter and choose video file you would like to convert.
    Step 2
    Choose destination file format in the iPod Touch video converter software. Most often, the software will have an iPod touch setting to choose. Choose this setting and an option window will open.
    Step 3
    Customize your iPod Touch video settings. Most software will present default settings to convert your video file. However, you can often change these settings to enhance video and audio quality. However, increasing video and audio quality will increase the time it takes to convert your video file

    Does anyone know which video file format is best to send by email so as to be able to then use the file in imovie09. For a business project, I have to request short videos to be emailed to me from a variety of individuals, and then I will put them together as an imovie project. Should Youtube be avoided as a source ? Thanks.

    Emailing video can be a real drama.
    You can easily convert YouTube video if you have the free software MPEG Streamclip: http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
    Download version 1.9.3b4 and install in your applications.
    Open then File > Open URL and copy/paste the YT clip address.
    Then File > Export to QuickTime and select Apple Intermediate Codec for the compression.
    The converted file will import into iMovie.
