Video Storage / Mirroring Question & Advice

Good Day
I am assembling about 5 years worth of video from tape, card and disk and putting it all onto a Drobo Pro w/ 8x2TB drives. The drive should be big enough. And my plan is to just get another Drobo if need be and daisy chain them together. I am not editing off of them (Drobo ***** for that!), just need a very reliable backup / storage solution.
However, due to my paranoia, I want a mirror of the drive(s) just in case there is a fire at the office, flood, theft etc. Just can't have all this footage existing in 1 location.
We are a small operation so things like Xserve seem a little much to me. Any ideas on options? Is it as simple as we have to get a second Drobo and make a copy of the main one and keep it off site? Is tape backup a good option? Online would be great, but 20TB+?
Need advice! Thanks in advance

You will need Screen Spanning Doctor(SSD) with your iMac to get 2 different screens. Of course, if you are a UNIX geek and know how, you can turn off mirroring in the terminal. SSD is a lot simpler for us non-geeks. You should be able to find it on VersionTracker.com or MacUpdate.com
With an expanded screen, you might still be unable to use your 1920x1080 or whatever because of VRAM limitations.. I was able to run the 14" and 19" in thousands of colors, but not millions from an iBookG4. I can run the 19" at 1280x1024 and the 15" MacBookPro at 1440x900 in millions, but the MPB can handle a 30" at millions. With the iBookG4, I had to have SSD to get an extended screen. I am pretty sure the iMacG5 required that, too.
Hope this helps.

  • Prosumer video storage: sub $1000 firewire solutions

This question has been asked before [1], but that thread went in a different direction.
I want to edit and manage about 0.7 to 1.0 TB of family video on hard drives, perhaps using FCPX. My home backup and data management won't scale to this level.
I'd like to hear what other prosumers do for $1000 or less (I assume professional setups are different.)
    I'm assuming something like this:
    3 1TB drives
RAID 0 setup with two drives (OS X RAID?)
Periodically take one drive offsite, the mirror rebuilds. (So only real backup is offsite backup, every year retire one drive and add another)
Mac formatted drives (so presumably not SAN/Drobo, though low-end DROBO is in my price range)
I assume over time, as drive capacity grows, I'll integrate my video storage with my other data use/backup. For a few years though they'll be different. For example: Video work would kill my Time Capsule Wifi backup.
Any suggestions? What vendors do you like?
    [1] https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3664396?start=0&tstart=0

Sorry, got my RAIDs switched! I do want redundancy.
I use CCC as a Time Capsule complement for routine backup, so I could go that route rather than RAID.
I woud like a solution where I didn't have to deal with multiple power cords and multiple data connectors.
What do you think of the LaCie d2 or 2big solutions? They have a new thunderbolt series out with MacOS RAID (so presumably FCPX compatible)
    http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?id=10573
The LaCie 2Big 4TB solution is $650. With a 3rd drive to swap offsite I'd be in budget.
The Pegasus R4 Thunderbolt solution is a bit higher end, but is sold through the Apple store:
    http://www.promise.com/storage/raid_series.aspx?m=192&region=en-global&rsn1=40&r sn3=47
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H5184VC/A/Thunderbolt
At $1150 it's over my budget, but it's something to think about ...

  • Can I use two Time Capsules? one as an extension of my laptop (for music and video storage) and the other one to back up everything from the laptop and  Time Capsule (for music and videos)

Can I use two Time Capsules? one as an extension of my laptop (for music and video storage) and the other one to back up everything from the laptop and  Time Capsule (for music and videos)

Not via Time Machine.   It cannot back up from a network location.
The 3rd-party apps CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync may be workable alternatives.
EDIT:  And, if you're going to do that, you could back up from the Time Capsule to a USB drive connected to the TC's USB port.  Second TC not required.

The question I need answered is ( and not able to find the answer on any of you help pages).....
Do the following have free copyright to publish on facebook and U Tube?
    1.Garage band sounds?
2.Slide show...Sample music and Theme music?
3.iMovie...iMovie sounds and iLife sounds ie.Medal Ceremony and Memorial etc?
I note one can publish to shared net places directly from iMovie so one assumes these are copyright free for non-profit making and non-comercial use.
It is impossible to contact apple direct. No email address. We put our selves at risk without this knowledge and like applemac, facebook will not communicate direct. Will applemac please take responsibility for copyright/the above that they are all too willing to sell to us but not support us with that knowledge.
I have Mac OS X Snow Leopard version 10.6.2 (2009 bought in 2010)

Thank you Klaus1.The large font, I copied and pasted from my mail box.I'm visually impaired...not to a huge degree but it helps to use the large font.I believe you are right about the copyright on the imac stuff but if facebook decide otherwise, you have to reply electronically to their challenge. If you can't provide a reference directly from the copyright owner then they remove the video.I believe this is a programmed response and no human is involved which now makes it impossible for me to get my video uploading restored. They detect added soundtrack automatically and then challenge. There are many others in the same boat and facebook will not communicate. They have various discussion sites on which I have left messages including Mark Zuckerbergs own facebook but I don't think anyone from facebook ever reads them.I intend to start a second facebook which I can use purely to get my videos uploaded as a lot of my friends enjoy them BUT don't want fall foul of their programming again. If only iMac would put something on the net to this effect.I think it is so unfair that with modern technology it is impossible to contact these large conglomerates personally and receive an email response.I tried emailing [email protected] but I got a failure notice. If you have any ideas on how to get verification from apple direct, I would be very grateful.Thank You.

  • What is the best way to set up an external drive for video storage

What is the best way to set up an external drive for video storage?

Check the formatting. It need to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). This is also known as HFS+.
FAT32 and NTFS formatting will not work with iMovie.
If necessary, you can reformat using Disk Utility.
Make one large partition. No need for multiple partitions.
Do moves or copies to the external drive through iMovie as detailed in iMovie Help. If you move Events in the Finder, they may become unlinked from the projects that use them.

I wouldn't think so because the newer ones with Retina displays don't have an internal SuperDrive that can be replaced. Therefore the newer logic boards wouldn't have the two SATA/SATA Express connections on the logic board.
At least that was the case as of 2012. I've seen newer ones and they also don't have a SuperDrive.

  • External storage for early 08 mac pro for video storage and editing

    Early 08 Mac Pro mod 3.1, 2x Intel 2.8 Quad Core Processors. Bus speed 1.6 Ghz.  10 GB DDR2 FB-Dimm 800 MHz. USB2, Firewire 400, 800. ATI Radeon HD 2600 PCIe 256 mbVRAM.  Currently running OS 10.6.8.
I use machine for photo and video storage and editing. I tried using 2x 3TB and 2x1TB HDD internally ( 8 TB total).  All are Seagate Barracuda SATA 7200.  Experienced constant spinning wheel and lockup requiring manual shutdown.  I had upgraded to Lion and to Maverick.  Did not help so I did a clean install of primary with  Snow Leopard and did not install past 10.6.8.  Works now if I don’t exceed 3.5 TB internally.  I also discovered that my Disk Permissions experienced voluminous corruption that could not be repaired if I installed  Java for Mac OS 10.6 Update 17 as suggested each time I check for software updates.
I need to be able to have a total of about six TBs available in my system for storage and editing of video via Imovie. I don’t know the maximum of HDD storage that can be used in the four internal bays without causing lockup and corruption. If 3.5 TB is about the max, then I would like to have some ability to have external storage via firewire 800 if that would facility fast enough transfer for either video edition and or playback. I don’t know if thunderbolt can be installed via PCI card. I could add a SATA PCI card.  However, I assume that would cause the same problem as experienced with 8 TBs installed internally in the four bays.
    I would appreciate any suggestions.

Yes, I've got a total of to TB and I'm running Snow Leopard.  If your hardware checks out, that pretty much makes it a software problem,,,  reinstall the OS?
Does the High Point Technologies SATA3 PCIe connect to eternal drive enclosures or does it somehow connect to drives in some of your four internal bays?
Highpoint makes several RocketRAID 2700 series SATA3 controllers for Mac with external mini-SAS connectors, probably the cleanest/least expensive external hook-up. They also offer a combo internal/external board that (for marketing reasons) is listed as not working for internals with Mac Pro.  I believe that this is due to pressure from Apple (who apparently does some business with High Point Tech) but to the best of my knowledge it will. Technically, the "not supported" statement is true since all the internal bays are tied to the motherboard SATA 2 controller, but this can be remedied with a special cable.  HOWEVER... the boards are not bootable, so your system disk needs to be on the motherboard controller.
In truth, I bought one of their 8-port "internal only" boards designated for PC only and flashed it so the Mac Pro sees it as a 2722 board, so I have 8 internal ports.  I'm not recommending you do the same unless you're pretty geeky, but the 2721 would give you half-and-half or the 2722 would give you 8 external with no mods to the board.

  • HD video storage for Final Cut Pro HD suite

I'm looking at setting up a Final Cut Pro HDCAM online suite, and I need to know what RAID system would be best for video storage. My reseller has told me that SANman systems are much better than Apple Xserve RAIDs, because of the data transfer rates. Can anyone tell me what systems they are running and what data rates are needed?

    Hi,
Apple Xserve RAIDs are great but not cheap. Never heard of SANman, though!
Depends on whether you want a cheeper system to start with or ... HD uncompressed (single stream) needs sustained data rates of 200 MB/s. We have an HD system running OK (Media100HD, not FCP, though, but it shouldn't make a difference) with 4 large ULTRA ATA discs, striped with a cheap controller. The whole storage solution (1600 GB) costs less than $1500. Write back if you need the details.

  • How do i increase video storage

My iPhone only records a few minutes of video, then it stops and says that there is no more storage.  It also says to change the video storage in settings. but I can't find where to make the change?

Not on the device itself. You can remove content that you don't use too often and transfer it into iTunes to get back space - or simply delete stuff and download it again if you want - but you cannot add storage capacity to the device itself.

  • Use PE Organizer or Lightroom to Catalog Videos + Storage Questions

Hello everyone. I'm re-entering the video arena after several years and have purchased a new entry level HD camcorder and plan on using Premier Elements for editing home videos. Nothing professional, just home movies, youth sports, stuff like that.
I have been an avid stills photographer however and have defined a workflow that I'm comfortable with. With stills - usually RAW files, I import them to an external hard drive first, import them into Lightroom, then proceed to catalog and keyword them appropriately.
Question 1: I know my way around Lightroom and it does allow for the cataloging and keywording of video files. I see that PE 12 has an organizer built into the program. Is there any advantage of me using PE's Organizer over Lightroom? They are all Adobe products, I'm just wondering if there is some sort of integration between PE's Organizer and Editor that will buy me an easier workflow or not. Otherwise I'll just use Lightroom.
Question 2: So a few years back I was taking videos with a DV camcorder, importing the video, editing it, burning a DVD, then deleting the source files AND the finished product that was burned to the DVD. I was certainly a novice and as I became more involved with photography and the technology itself, I came to realize that blowing away the finished product and relying on DVDs as storage was a bad idea. This means for those yesteryear videos I took I must hope a) that the discs never go "bad", which I know now they won't last forever, and b) that I must keep at least some machine around in the next decades that can play these discs. Yes, Blu-Ray players are backward compatible, but who knows in 20 years, right? At some point I'll try and look into capturing those DVDs back to a digital file, but that's besides the point. So I know I do not want to rely on DVDs as a "preservation" or archiving method for finished produced videos. The raw source files I'm not too worried about. I'll keep them around on an external drive and burn them to DVD-R, and worse case I'll have to roll them off the external drive if I run out of space and cannot afford a new drive right away. So my question is: a) what is the best format to store the finished video so that I am not reliant on DVDs as my primary preservation method and b) a format that I can use to re-burn a DVD or Blu-Ray disc later should I need to make additional copies and the original DVD/Blu-Ray disc is no longer available for a straight copy? The "b" portion of this question is of key importance to me right now because while I have a decent Blu-Ray player, I do not have the capabilities to burn a Blu-Ray (or even a DVD for that matter). I plan on getting a Blu-Ray burner within the next 6 months, but until then I will need to create finished videos that will eventually be turned into DVDs/Blu-Rays. What format could I store the finished product in so that I can go back and easily burn video to a DVD or Blu-Ray disc later? I would think the format would be very specific for Blu-Ray burning later especially.
Sorry for the long post. I tried to keep it as short as possible.
    Have a great weekend!

Thanks for the follow ups. Sorry for the delayed response. Was thinking about your questions but got detoured several times.
Let us start with archiving....I do not know that there is a perfect solution with changing times et al.
    1. Project Archiving would appear at face value to be a good choice
    a. preserves your source media that the project file needs to trace back to
    b. preserves the project file with all its edits so that your re-entry into the project will allow you further edits and/or alternative
    export choices.
    c. there is a concern about disc menus in archived projects but you say that the disc menu aspect of the matter is not important to you
ATR Premiere Elements Troubleshooting: PE12: Archiving Projects With Disc Menus
My main problem with Project Archiver is that you are dependent on being able to open the archived project file in the same version in which it was
created or a later version...the later the version, the more the concern.
    2. When it comes to burn tos DVD, AVCHD, or Blu-ray....VIDEO_TS, BDMV, BDMV & Blu-ray disc image....
    a. The best of all worlds might be accomplished by saving the VIDEO_TS Folder from a burn to folder for DVD and saving the BDMV from a burn to folder for AVCHD. There is no Premiere Elements burn to folder for Blu-ray. Depending on the version of Premiere Elements and the computer operating system, you could try for a burn to Blu-ray disc image with Phantom Burner in conjunction with Premiere Elements.
ATR Premiere Elements Troubleshooting: PE12: Disc Image/Phantom Burner & PE
I would probably have more confidence on finding a program now or in the future - ImgBurn, Nero...to be available to take the VIDEO_TS, BDMV, or Blu-ray disc image to disc. You might even consider a burn to Blu-ray, followed by copying the BDMV Folder from it for archiving purposes. The video files from VIDEO_TS and BDMV are easily extracted.
    3. If preserving the edited Timeline is the target, then SD project I would probably go with DV AVI standard or widescreen, if HD, probably an AVCHD.mp4 or AVCHD.m2t.
If Premiere Elements versions got stronger on disc image, I suspect I would go that route to preserve a project. Right now, I am doing a mix of all of the above.
As for Lightroom, Elements Organizer, and Premiere Elements. I am not a great fan of Lightroom. Neither am I have heavy user of Elements Organizer. However, I have looked a some Lightroom tryouts along the way to see what it is all about.
    1. With regard to your use of Photoshop Elements 9 plus Lightroom, that seems consistent with the workflows suggested by others and the gains to be gotten in using the best attributes of each.
Integrate Lightroom with Elements – Photoshop Elements User
You would probably get greater advantage using the same version of Elements Organizer as Photoshop Elements for the sake of integration.
Just in case note....Premiere Elements and Photoshop Elements are standalone programs, each coming with its own Elements Organizer. When Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements same versions are on the same computer they share the same Elements Organizer catalog..
    2. For me, Lightroom and Premiere Elements, unlike Photoshop Elements, and video never seemed to integrate well.
The following is a link to some work I did with LIghtroom when I was at a forum that I no longer visit
Lightroom 4.1 Slideshow Module Visited - Elements Village
From my perspective, Premiere Elements integration with Elements Organizer and Photoshop Elements gives me a workflow that meets my needs.
My camera does not record raw image format. But, if I have Camera Raw installed on my computer with Premiere Elements, I can import raw image format and dng as source media into a Premiere Elements project. For edit of the raw image format, I need the Camera Raw dialog which requires the presence of Photoshop Elements which I have.
Please review and consider the above and then let me know if I have targeted your question.
    Thank you.

  • IPod Video Storage Question

I have an older 30 GB iPod Video (called the Classic now, I think?). I keep only music on it, and while I've long since outgrown the storage capacity, I like to keep it as full as possible.
I understand that I only have about 28 GB of usable space, but when I sync my music I'm also showing about 1.8 GB of "Other". What is this? Since only music is set to sync the only thing I can think of is album artwork. I feel like there's a way to disallow album art from syncing, but I can't seem to find it.
    Any help appreciated.

    Hello KeenerKat,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
The Other section could apply to any Notes, files you may have stored on the iPod (if you have it enabled as an external hard disc), album artwork as you noted, and lastly, some of it is decidicated to the iPod's O/S or software. So basically, there will always be space occupied by this section on your iPod.
If you feel as though the amount of space occupied by the Other section is unusually large (in the GB's) then I would recommend restoring the iPod via iTunes. Of course, much of this space in your case may be applied or due to the album artwork stored on the iPod.
If you have upgraded to iTunes 9, then the option to not include album artwork is no longer available. No word on if it will ever be returned either. You could suggest getting it back to Apple through the link below.

    Hope this helps.

  • Storage spaces simple mirror question

I just have a simple mirror at the moment, with just two 1tb drives in mirror mode, and it works just fine.  Two things I do wonder.  If one drive fails, I assume the files would be preserved on the other.  I wonder however if it can be plugged
into another Windows box, a Windows 7 machine for example, and read by that machine, or if it can only be read by the machine on which it was setup?
I have assumed Storage Spaces was like hardware raid in this way, but now I wonder....

    Hi,
For mirror mode, it means that Data is duplicated on two or three physical disks, and  this storage layout requires at least two disks to protect you from a single disk failure.
But you can't view the content in the disk since Storage Spaces records information about pools and storage spaces on the physical disks that compose the storage pool. Therefore, your pool and storage spaces are preserved when you move an entire storage
pool and its physical disks from one computer to another.
Windows Server 2012 starts storage that could potentially be shared with a cluster in a safe state. For Storage Spaces, that means the first time Windows connects to a storage pool, the pool starts as read-only and the storage spaces will start in a detached
state. To access your data, you must set the storage pool to read-write and then attach the storage spaces.
These steps do not apply to Windows 8 – storage pools start as read-write and storage spaces start as attached.

  • X4500 RAID Configuration for best performance for video storage

    Hello all:
Our company is working with a local university to deploy IP video security cameras. The university has an X4500 Thumper that they would like to use for the storage of the video archives. The video management software (VMS) will run on an Intel based server with Windows 2003 server as the OS and connect to the Thumper via iSCSI. The VMS manages the permissions, schedules and other features of the cameras and records all video on the local drives until the scheduled archive time. When the archive time occurs, the VMS transfers the video to the Thumper for long term storage. It is our understanding that when using iSCSI and Windows OS there is a 2TB limit for the storage space - so we will divide the pool into several 2TB segments.
The question is: Given this configuration, what RAID level (0, 1, Z or Z2) will provide the highest level of data protection without comprimising performance to a level that would be noticable? We are not writing the video directly to the Thumper, we are transferring it from the drives of the Windows server to the Thumper, and we need that transfer to be very fast - since the VMS stops recording during the archiving and restarts when complete, creating down time for the cameras.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd put as many disks as possible into a RAID 5 (striping) set. This will provide the highest level of performance, with the ability to sustain a single disk failure.
With striping, some data is written to all the disks in the stripe set. So, if you have 10 disks in the set, then instead of writing data to a single disk, which is slow, 1/10th of the data is written to each disk simultaneously, which is very fast. In effect, the more disks you write to, the faster the operation completes.
