Video storage transfer

I have footage on tape that I need to transfer to an external drive to be sent to another editing studio.  I use Adobe Premiere, they use FCP.  What I have in mind to do is start a new project and use that drive as a sratch disk.  The question is, will they be able to read the content with FCP?  Or is there another way to do that?
Thanks!

I'm not real clear on the problem (other than I wouldn't touch quicktime mov files with YOUR ten foot pole, but that is another issue)
Once you use Firewire to get video from tape to pc (be it DV or HDV) you simply copy to the external drive
I don't use Firewire (Canon Vixia with SD memory card for AVCHD) so I don't know if DV or HDV well capture as mov on a pc
If they will, just copy from capture drive to external drive
If not, you will have to capture in your usual format and then convert to mov
If your external drive is too slow to use for direct capture, you will have to go to your faster internal drive and then copy

    Early 08 Mac Pro mod 3.1, 2x Intel 2.8 Quad Core Processors. Bus speed 1.6 Ghz.  10 GB DDR2 FB-Dimm 800 MHz. USB2, Firewire 400, 800. ATI Radeon HD 2600 PCIe 256 mbVRAM.  Currently running OS 10.6.8.
I use machine for photo and video storage and editing. I tried using 2x 3TB and 2x1TB HDD internally ( 8 TB total).  All are Seagate Barracuda SATA 7200.  Experienced constant spinning wheel and lockup requiring manual shutdown.  I had upgraded to Lion and to Maverick.  Did not help so I did a clean install of primary with  Snow Leopard and did not install past 10.6.8.  Works now if I don’t exceed 3.5 TB internally.  I also discovered that my Disk Permissions experienced voluminous corruption that could not be repaired if I installed  Java for Mac OS 10.6 Update 17 as suggested each time I check for software updates.
I need to be able to have a total of about six TBs available in my system for storage and editing of video via Imovie. I don’t know the maximum of HDD storage that can be used in the four internal bays without causing lockup and corruption. If 3.5 TB is about the max, then I would like to have some ability to have external storage via firewire 800 if that would facility fast enough transfer for either video edition and or playback. I don’t know if thunderbolt can be installed via PCI card. I could add a SATA PCI card.  However, I assume that would cause the same problem as experienced with 8 TBs installed internally in the four bays.
    I would appreciate any suggestions.

Yes, I've got a total of to TB and I'm running Snow Leopard.  If your hardware checks out, that pretty much makes it a software problem,,,  reinstall the OS?
Does the High Point Technologies SATA3 PCIe connect to eternal drive enclosures or does it somehow connect to drives in some of your four internal bays?
Highpoint makes several RocketRAID 2700 series SATA3 controllers for Mac with external mini-SAS connectors, probably the cleanest/least expensive external hook-up. They also offer a combo internal/external board that (for marketing reasons) is listed as not working for internals with Mac Pro.  I believe that this is due to pressure from Apple (who apparently does some business with High Point Tech) but to the best of my knowledge it will. Technically, the "not supported" statement is true since all the internal bays are tied to the motherboard SATA 2 controller, but this can be remedied with a special cable.  HOWEVER... the boards are not bootable, so your system disk needs to be on the motherboard controller.
In truth, I bought one of their 8-port "internal only" boards designated for PC only and flashed it so the Mac Pro sees it as a 2722 board, so I have 8 internal ports.  I'm not recommending you do the same unless you're pretty geeky, but the 2721 would give you half-and-half or the 2722 would give you 8 external with no mods to the board.

  • HD video storage for Final Cut Pro HD suite

I'm looking at setting up a Final Cut Pro HDCAM online suite, and I need to know what RAID system would be best for video storage. My reseller has told me that SANman systems are much better than Apple Xserve RAIDs, because of the data transfer rates. Can anyone tell me what systems they are running and what data rates are needed?

    Hi,
Apple Xserve RAIDs are great but not cheap. Never heard of SANman, though!
Depends on whether you want a cheeper system to start with or ... HD uncompressed (single stream) needs sustained data rates of 200 MB/s. We have an HD system running OK (Media100HD, not FCP, though, but it shouldn't make a difference) with 4 large ULTRA ATA discs, striped with a cheap controller. The whole storage solution (1600 GB) costs less than $1500. Write back if you need the details.

  • How do i increase video storage

My iPhone only records a few minutes of video, then it stops and says that there is no more storage.  It also says to change the video storage in settings. but I can't find where to make the change?

Not on the device itself. You can remove content that you don't use too often and transfer it into iTunes to get back space - or simply delete stuff and download it again if you want - but you cannot add storage capacity to the device itself.

  • Can I use two Time Capsules? one as an extension of my laptop (for music and video storage) and the other one to back up everything from the laptop and  Time Capsule (for music and videos)

Can I use two Time Capsules? one as an extension of my laptop (for music and video storage) and the other one to back up everything from the laptop and  Time Capsule (for music and videos)

Not via Time Machine.   It cannot back up from a network location.
The 3rd-party apps CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync may be workable alternatives.
EDIT:  And, if you're going to do that, you could back up from the Time Capsule to a USB drive connected to the TC's USB port.  Second TC not required.

  • What is the best way to set up an external drive for video storage

What is the best way to set up an external drive for video storage?

Check the formatting. It need to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). This is also known as HFS+.
FAT32 and NTFS formatting will not work with iMovie.
If necessary, you can reformat using Disk Utility.
Make one large partition. No need for multiple partitions.
Do moves or copies to the external drive through iMovie as detailed in iMovie Help. If you move Events in the Finder, they may become unlinked from the projects that use them.

  • Prosumer video storage: sub $1000 firewire solutions

This question has been asked before [1], but that thread went in a different direction.
I want to edit and manage about 0.7 to 1.0 TB of family video on hard drives, perhaps using FCPX. My home backup and data management won't scale to this level.
I'd like to hear what other prosumers do for $1000 or less (I assume professional setups are different.)
    I'm assuming something like this:
    3 1TB drives
RAID 0 setup with two drives (OS X RAID?)
Periodically take one drive offsite, the mirror rebuilds. (So only real backup is offsite backup, every year retire one drive and add another)
Mac formatted drives (so presumably not SAN/Drobo, though low-end DROBO is in my price range)
I assume over time, as drive capacity grows, I'll integrate my video storage with my other data use/backup. For a few years though they'll be different. For example: Video work would kill my Time Capsule Wifi backup.
Any suggestions? What vendors do you like?
    [1] https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3664396?start=0&tstart=0

Sorry, got my RAIDs switched! I do want redundancy.
I use CCC as a Time Capsule complement for routine backup, so I could go that route rather than RAID.
I woud like a solution where I didn't have to deal with multiple power cords and multiple data connectors.
What do you think of the LaCie d2 or 2big solutions? They have a new thunderbolt series out with MacOS RAID (so presumably FCPX compatible)
    http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?id=10573
The LaCie 2Big 4TB solution is $650. With a 3rd drive to swap offsite I'd be in budget.
The Pegasus R4 Thunderbolt solution is a bit higher end, but is sold through the Apple store:

At $1150 it's over my budget, but it's something to think about ...

  • HT4993 when switching from my htc evo to the iphone 4s they said all my photos and videos would transfer over time, but after 6 hours still nothing has transfered.  Anybody have this issue or know what I can do so I won't lose all my pictures and videos

When switching from HTC evo to iphone 4s on sprint service the attendant said all my music, photos, and videos would transfer after some time.  Does anyone know if this is true, or has anyone had this issue happen to them?  It has been 8 hours since the switch and only my contacts transferred right away.

Well i wouldn't see why your photo's, videos and music would trasnfer. As that is a android device, there is no way to have them transfer over the air to the iphone.
Contacts probably came from google. Your videos and such you would have to move them to PC then to the iphone. Same with your music.

  • Video storage for all videos: In iPhoto? In iTunes? In iMovie? Or...?

I want a simple solution to gain acces to all my videos on Apple TV
I want to have all my videos in ONE PLACE!!! Right now they are scattered all over my system. I don´t want to search iPhoto, iMovie, iTunes and different folders every time I want to play my different video files and movies on... let´s say Apple TV. Why can´t we have ONE deticated unified "storage and play back" solution for all our video files on Mac OSX? Or at least a front-end that showcases ALL your videos and that is enabled to fetch ANY of those videos for directly playback right there.
I do understand the need for different input solutions/apps for videos such as iPhoto, iMovie, iTunes, Aperture. BUT after processing (or what ever you do with your videos) in those Apps, it would be great to be able to transfer... or keep a grand overwiev of all your videos and movies... in ONE place!
Right now I have video file duplicates all over the place because I want to acces videos easily on my Apple TV and from what ever of the following apps I have open... iTunes - iPhoto - iMovie- (Vimeo) - (Youtube).
I can acces all of my music in ONE place in iTunes. I want a simular "ONE place solution" for my... holiday videos... my downloaded videos... my production videos (iMove etc.) etc. etc.
My question for now is: As we don´t have a proper solution for this yet, then what is at the present, the best and most simple solution to gain acces to my many different videos via Apple TV? I would like to avoid a media server and keep the files on my Mac.

If you want to play them on AppleTV, they need to be in iTunes - simplest way to do this from iMovie is using Share to menu and adding to iTunes.

  • Using dvd as video storage

I have a dv camera that uses the mini cassetes which hold about 1 hour of video. I want to transfer the 1 hour of video straight to a dvd for storage. I use the onestep dvd button and everything works fine, but, after about 15 minutes of video the program stops and wants to burn on the dvd. What is happening? is the program not compressing the data for the dvd burn? The dvd will hold 4.7 GB of information. All I want to do is transfer directly from tape to disc for file storage. Any thoughts on why I'm having so much difficulty would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi Fireguy
Have not tried this function but I can speculate.
    a. Save Your original miniDV tapes - DVD disks are no good substitute.
    b. The information on a 60 min miniDV tape is huge. When imported to
Your Mac (it will be compressed on Your hard disk) it will take about 13 Gb.
So there has to be a lot of coding to fit the material on a 4.7Gb disk and
to be able to play the DVD it has to be in mpeg2 coding (which also lowers
    the quality)
My guess is that "onestep" has to make a lot of calculating and this needs
space on the hard disk to be done.
    When I work in iMovie a 60 min project needs about 13Gb + 5 - 15 Gb for
editing. Then an additional 20Gb needs to be free for iDVD to work with.
I think that Your Mac has some cleaning to do after 15 min to get more
    space to continue with.
    Yours guessing Bengt W

  • X4500 RAID Configuration for best performance for video storage

    Hello all:
Our company is working with a local university to deploy IP video security cameras. The university has an X4500 Thumper that they would like to use for the storage of the video archives. The video management software (VMS) will run on an Intel based server with Windows 2003 server as the OS and connect to the Thumper via iSCSI. The VMS manages the permissions, schedules and other features of the cameras and records all video on the local drives until the scheduled archive time. When the archive time occurs, the VMS transfers the video to the Thumper for long term storage. It is our understanding that when using iSCSI and Windows OS there is a 2TB limit for the storage space - so we will divide the pool into several 2TB segments.
The question is: Given this configuration, what RAID level (0, 1, Z or Z2) will provide the highest level of data protection without comprimising performance to a level that would be noticable? We are not writing the video directly to the Thumper, we are transferring it from the drives of the Windows server to the Thumper, and we need that transfer to be very fast - since the VMS stops recording during the archiving and restarts when complete, creating down time for the cameras.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd put as many disks as possible into a RAID 5 (striping) set. This will provide the highest level of performance, with the ability to sustain a single disk failure.
With striping, some data is written to all the disks in the stripe set. So, if you have 10 disks in the set, then instead of writing data to a single disk, which is slow, 1/10th of the data is written to each disk simultaneously, which is very fast. In effect, the more disks you write to, the faster the operation completes.

  • IPad as a photo/video storage device?

I'd love to replace my netbook with an iPad for travel. I use the netbook for internet access and for storage of data from my camera. I know I can transfer images to an iPad via the camera connection kit. However, my camera also takes video in a wacky AVCHD format. I know there's no way to view this sort of unprocessed video on an iPad. However, is there a way to copy the file structure from the camera ? AVCHD, at least on my Panasonic GH1, uses a series of subfolders.
Is there a way to copy this data to an iPad via, I presume, the camera connector, and then sync it intact to a MAC?

Apart from format compatability you may also want to consider resource management while on the road. It was only via a tip of a developer that I learned how to remove video's directly on the iPad (choose cover mode, keep the finger on the video you want to remove until a delete cross appears). For Photos the filemanagement is still very primitive, though. On the iPad you cannot delete events or albums at once, and if you've synced them with iTunes you cannot remove them at all. In short, you have to consider rather carefully beforehand how much space you will need for your data vault.

  • Iphone 4S video/photo transfer to Iphoto

I own a new iPhone 4S and I have issues with transfering photos and videos to iTunes.  Whenever I try to transfer my recent iphone roll, I either get an error message saying that theire was a problem with "one of my photos" and it stops the process.  And if I succeed on transfering (one by one) the picture comes out half the photo OK and the other half yellowich pixelised??!  And for videos, they look fine on my 4S but when on iTune, they turn out pixelised and jumps micro seconds of play time every 4 or 5 seconds?  Anyone experienced the same?  Thank you!

Ahhh... right. Thanks, forgot about making sure all systems are the latest.
iPhoto isn't the latest version, so that's probably what's gumming up the works. I've successfully used ImageCapture though, so photos are useable now.
    Cheers for that!

  • Managing video storage with iOS8 - video usage not showing

I've typically deleted video (iTunes tv shows) using manage storage/usage from General settings.  For some reason video data usage is not showing and I'm not aware of any other means of freeing up space. I'm not able to delete directly from video itself once data has been downloaded. Help!

    Hello vmclelland,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
To delete videos from your iPad running iOS 8 please follow the steps below.
Delete a video from iPad. Tap Edit in the upper right of your collection, then tap on the video thumbnail. If you don’t see the Edit button, look for on your video thumbnails—those videos haven’t been downloaded to iPad, so you can’t delete them. To delete an individual episode of a series, tap the series, then swipe left on the episode in the Episodes list.
Deleting a video (other than a rented movie) from iPad doesn’t delete it from the iTunes library on your computer or from your purchased videos in iCloud, and you can sync the video or download it to iPad again later. If you don’t want to sync a deleted video back to iPad, set iTunes to not sync the video. See Sync with iTunes.
Important: If you delete a rented movie from iPad, it’s deleted permanently and cannot be transferred back to your computer.
    Add videos to your library
    Take care,
    Alex H.
