Video Streaming off time Capsule

Hey guys,
I have all my movies on my timecapsule and when I am trying to view them they are very choppy. Does anyone else have this problem? Any solutions?
Cheers

Hello whatsurbid. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Are the network clients, that will be watching the streamed movies from the Time Capsule, connected by wire or wireless. If wireless, which radio mode is the TC configured for: 802.11b/g or 802.11n only? Are there any non-802.11n clients on the network? Is there a Time Machine backup in progress when you try streaming?
For streaming video, especially 1080p, your network should be 1 Gbps Ethernet between the video server & the client. If Ethernet is not desirable/available, then the wireless ratio mode should be "802.11n only (5 GHz)" with wide-channels enabled. This would allow up to 300+ Mbps of bandwidth. Anything less than this, may be the reason you are experiencing "choppy" video performance.

  • How get data off Time Capsule that otherwise doesn't work

I think a power surge caused our Time Capsule to stop working. I took it to the Apple Store today and they couldn't get it to come up and be recognized. While Apple will replace it, they said they don't help get the data off (and referred me to a couple of Apple consultants). But, they were pretty sure the data was in good shape.. just most everything else apparently wasn't working.
Do I need to use one of these 3rd party consultants to get the data off, or can I do myself? Just wondering if anyone has tried and is it easy enough for the average person to do self-serve.
    Thanks.

I am having the exact same problem. I have a bunch of video on my time capsule and im in the middle of editing it and now I cant access the video and in final cut it just says media off line and there is no way to reconnect to it. Could somebody please tell us if there is a way to fix this without too much work.

Click on the Time Capsule, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Disks tab at the top of the screen
    Click Erase Disk
    Choose the Quick Erase option
    Click Erase
The procedure will take a minute or two.  The Time Capsule is now ready for a new backup

  • Streaming from time capsule.

My Apple TV 2 connected directly to my 4th generation Time Capsule and file sharing is enabled. My iMac is also directly connected to this router/TC and all of my movies reside on it's internal disk. When my iMac is off and/or in
sleep mode and I try to view a movie from the TC's disk the system pauses and buffers every 10-30 seconds. When my iMac is on it seems to work fine and it appears there is no need for buffering. Anyone have any idea why this would be happenig and is there a way to fix it?

Warning I am guessing wildly.. I have ATV1 running over network and it works very well. Running Crystalbuntu, with the crystal card.
The ATV has 8GB of NAND memory used as disk storage space.. so it is collecting files in chunks.. since using ethernet is so fast the download of one chunk is fast enough that the disk in the TC maybe has time to spin down. What I don't know is how much of the memory is applied to cache of the stream. (You are not really streaming of course.. you are reading a file across a network.. the only streaming that is happening is the video to the TV). Can you force the ATV to cache the whole movie before it starts playing?
    What about trying wireless?
Did you put your hand on the TC and just feel if the disk is actually spinning up and down.. as stated.. I am guessing ... wildly.
Can you also stick a laptop or something onto the same ethernet as the ATV is connected and test the performance of the network at that point.. maybe the issue is poor network cable, and in fact it is struggling for speed.

  • Stream using Time Capsule

Hello Everybody, i have a 3tb time capsule, 3 macs and an apple TV, also, a few ipads and iphones. My question is, is there a way i can stream my HD videos that i have it locate them on my TC? i will need to do this on every device of my configuration. I read that i could use VLC to do this, but according to VLC forum support, this is not correct as it doesn't support the necessary codecs to do so.
    Thanks in advance.

The TC is a dumb hard disk in a router. It has zero media extensions.. ie it is unable to do anything but store files.. if the files are media files, movies etc.. the TC is blissfully unaware of that fact.
So think of the TC as suitably dumb file store.. that can do nothing to help you.. from there on you can work out what needs to be done. You need a media player.. and you need a device to play it on.. maybe one and the same device but it makes no difference. The TC takes no part in it.. but the router part is perhaps your network connection.. and therefore you will have added issues if you try and stream by wireless.. you have to stream off the TC to the media player.. and then (unless it is the same device).. you must send the file stream back to the TC to be distributed to the network. Wireless networks do not handle this well.. double streaming in two directions at once is to be avoided. Ethernet is fine.. It has the ability to Tx and Rx at the same time.. clearly wireless cannot.
Also the TC has no backup.. it is not designed as a NAS.. it is a target for Time Machine backups.
So in the end it is totally unsuitable.

  • Stream from time capsule to applte tv via ipad air

    hi,
im pretty new with apple...i used android before but im thinking about a change....
i want to stream music and movies/photos from a time capsule to tv and an av receiver via an ipad air.
is that possible? do i need a special app?
if so, how do i connect the apple tv to tv and av receiver?
    use a hdmi switch or
hdmi to tv and audio optical to av receiver?
    thanks!
    jan

You are better asking this is the ATV section..
The TC is useless.. it is a dumb storage of files.. no media servers whatsoever.
Nor can you use itunes libraries. You must have itunes running for the ATV to stream content.
You will need therefore to have files in some format that the ipad can read and use airplay to the ATV.
how do i connect the apple tv to tv and av receiver?
    use a hdmi switch or
hdmi to tv and audio optical to av receiver?
It is impossible to know without info on the actual av receiver capability.. but modern hdmi switching is built into the AV receiver.. you should not need another switch and you should be able to handle both sound and video over hdmi.. but if not that is simple to fix with optical.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5209
    http://www.apple.com/au/airplay/
Notice in all this setup.. the TC is completely lacking.. it has no role in this. Anything you do without iTunes you do on your own as far as Apple is concerned.. and to play iTunes you need a computer running.. sorry but that is the result of copyright protection.
If you do not want to use itunes.. then buy a simple media player.. eg WD Live TV.. it can play content directly from Time Capsule.. because the WD is a proper player.

  • Streaming from Time Capsule to Apple TV

I'm considering to purchase the Time Capsule. My purpose is to have a wireless HD with my complete iTunes Library on it and tstreming music and video to ATV.
Does anyone have exprerience with this set up?

I am assuming that you currently have the existing model of the Apple TV and not the latest just announced by Apple ... correct?
If so, you are already aware that the Apple TV can either "duplicate" your iTunes Library or can accept streams from an iTunes host. If your goal is to use the new Time Capsule (TC) as the location of the iTunes Library, this should work, but bandwidth performance will be critical, especially for streaming HD video.
To stream, you will need to take into consideration the path that the stream will be required to take to get to the Apple TV. For HD video, you will want this path to be Gigabit Ethernet wherever possible ... so ideally (but not necessarily practically) that would mean that the iTunes host and the Apple TV would need to be connected to the TC by Ethernet. That is because, the iTunes host must first contact the TC to access its iTunes Library. The TC will stream the data to the iTunes host and, in turn, the host will stream it back to the TC, and finally, the TC will stream it to the Apple TV. The path taken, of course, will change depending on the connection types (wired or wireless) ... and if you have configured the Apple TV as an iTunes speaker.

  • Video Lag with Time Capsule!

Hi guys, I recently made the move from Windows to Mac with a MacBook Pro, and so far, it has been one of the best decisions I ever made. However, I noticed that with today's digital media, one needs more than the MBP's 250GB, so I purchased a 500GB Time Capsule to supplement my storage space needs. Time Capsule is truly a great machine, with an extremely fast router, and amazingly simple backups. With this in mind, I decided to move some of my less frequently used and my larger files from the MBP to the TC. I moved my entire itunes library over to the TC, and that was successful and itunes works fine. The next move I made was to put all my movies on the TC. Now that I try to play those movies, Standard Definition movies work perfectly fine. The problem is my HD movies (1080 and 720) which have considerable lag. At first I thought that this might be a format issue, at which time I reencoded a 1080 movie to MP4 and then to WMV, both formats also caused lag, either when played in iTunes or any other media player (such as Quicktime). Also, if I copy the movies to my MBP hard drive, they copy at very fast speeds (about 10mbps) which means a 2 hour 1080 movie copies in 30 minutes, and when i launch them from my laptop, they play perfectly fine. By the way, my TC is connected to my MBP with ethernet (gigabit) and Wifi (802.11n).
What I dont understand is how can a 7200RPM HDD connected to gigabit ethernet/wifi n not be able to stream an HD movie?
    Is there a fix?
Is the problem hardware or software?
    I really appreciate your input!

I turned off wireless and kept it connected by internet, but it actually lags even more now. However, I think I make have discovered the problem here. When I go to the network utility and point it to my ethernet connection, this is what it says:
    Hardware Address: 00:1b:63:a6:ca:4b
    IP Address(es): 192.168.1.102
    Link Speed: 100 Mbit/s
    Link Status: Active
    Vendor: Marvell
Model: Yukon Gigabit Adapter 88E8055 Singleport Copper SA
I don't understand why it uses 100 Mbit/s when its a gigabit card???
Could it be the wire? In which case, is there a certain type of wire that I need for gigabit?
Also, I tried adjusting the wireless setting to what you said (and disconnecting ethernet), and it lags, but slightly less than before, and when I go to the Network Utility and point it to the wireless connection, it says 300 Mbit/s could (with signal: -36, Noise: -94, Rate: 300). The TC and the MBP are about 10cm away from each other by the way. Could an HD movie possibly be that demanding on a network? I remember watching the steve jobs keynote on the iphone in march (which said HD, not sure of the resolution) over the internet and an old TRENDnet g router and it barely even needed to buffer. Keeping in mind that the movies I have are saved tot he HD and not streaming over the internet or anything, im thinking performance should be much better, yet its not. With this kind of hardware, im thinking software is to blame.
Thanks for the tips, any more suggestions?

  • HELP! Cannot copy files off Time Capsule

I have a 1TB Time Capsule (DualBand) that I use like a NAS (network attached storage). Time Machine is disabled, but I manually copy files on the Time Capsule's disk when I want to back them up, and share them with other computers in my house.
I am trying to copy all of the files of the Time Capsule to a 2 TB Firewire 800 drive connected to my MacBook Pro, but I'm having a problem. About half-way through the the copy process (which is estimated to be an over-night ordeal) the Time Capsule is disconnected and I get the error:
+The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data+
+in "" could not be read or written.+
    +(Error code -36)+
Also, the disconnected Time Capsule is still visible in the SHARED portion of my Finder's sidebar, but it is impossible to connect to the disk again, unless I unplug the Time Capsule and power it back up.
Every time I try the process, I receive the same error, and have to restart my Time Capsule again. Could someone please help me get my data off my Time Capsule? I would prefer not to have to resort to ripping it open, so I can put the drive into my USB Toaster.
NOTE: I've tried repairing disk permissions on my MBP and repairing disk on my 2TB external drive. I've found no way to do any of these kinds of things on the Time Capsule's internal disk.

I don't have a direct solution to your disconnection problem, but if your 2 TB drive has a USB port, you may be able to connect it to your Time Capsule and use the "Archive" function (in AirPort Utility's Disks/Disks panel) to copy that data from the Time Capsule disk.

  • Stream from Time Capsule to Apple TV without having the Mac on.

Is it possible to move my movie content to the Time Capsule and stream to Apple TV without the Mac being on?

Only if the TC is jailbreaked.. otherwise it is dependent on itunes.. and TC  is a dumb hard drive without media server or smarts of any kind.
You can buy a WD live or lots of other media players.. but Apple locked ATV to the itunes environment.. to ensure you pay.

  • Slow Streaming From Time Capsule to Apple TV

    Hi,
I have several movies and tv programmes stored on my Time Capsule..... When I stream from the time capsule to Apple TV it is very slow and is constantly buffering. How can I get around this as at present the films / programmes are un-watchable.
    Thanks
    mbchunky

Thanks for describing your current network configuration for streaming.
In your current setup, QuickTime will first have to access the media files from the TC over a wireless connection. From there it will send the stream back to the TC. The TC will then send the stream to the Apple TV. As you can see there are a number of potential Wi-Fi interference issues along this overall path. Interference is not just from other Wi-Fi operating nearby, but also includes microwave ovens, portable phones, baby monitors, etc. Very importantly, it also includes the type of building material used along the path the wireless signal must travel through.
I would suggest that you do a bit of testing to determine what exactly the data throughput you are getting. Once you understand those values, we should be able to determine where the bottlenecks are and try to eliminate them if possible.
Please take a look at the following AirPort User Tip for details on taking throughput measurements.

  • Video Sender kills Time Capsule Network

    Hi
I have been successfully using my Time Capsule for backup and wireless access point for several months. Only problem I have is that if I switch on my Video sender so that I can watch and control my Sky Box in another room it kills my network.
I can only change my video sender channel from 1 to 4 and dont know how to change the channel of the Time Capsule base station. I understand that I need to separate the channels as far apart as possible to resolve any conflict.
Can anyone tell me how I change the time capsule channel and offer any advice on how best to resolve the conflict ?
    Thanks
    Rob

use Airport Utility. Select manual/wireless channel can be changed if using N+B/G but not if using N only.
Also channel must be separated by more than 1 over 4 try 1 over 11

  • Can you run/save applications off Time Capsule?

To avoid waste of space on the new Airs, could one use a Time capsule
for all its saving needs, applications, music, videos

Software applications should be (and usually must be) installed on either a local hard drive or directly-connected external hard drive of your Mac.
On the other hand data like iTunes music, videos, pictures, and documents are all things that certainly could be stored on the Time Capsule. How much you want to store on Time Capsule vs your laptop probably depends on how much time you spend "on the road" with your laptop - and if your laptop rarely leaves your home, then there likely isn't much need to keep most of your data on it.

  • Can't get data off Time Capsule

I had to erase my HD and reinstall Yosemite (multiple times) because my machines could not boot, shut down or run reliably. I used Migration Assistant to restore my applications and user files from my 2014 Time Capsule. But on my Macbook Pro, it lied: no applications were actually restored (possibly the reason I finally ended up with a machine that could boot up), and while it restored much of my filespace, it didn't restore my music or photos, at least 60 GB of data.
I can't restore them using Time Machine because it seems to regard my erased HD as unrelated to the earlier one. And I can't open the sparsebundle in the Finder: I always get "connection failed". Resetting the TC (via Airport Utility) did not help. What can I do?

Switching everything off, then on again later, seems to reset things enough. Now to copy stuff back manually... what a pain.
