Video stretched when exported even when "letterbox" is checked

Hi, I'm trying to export a lower quality version of one of my HD movies. I've previously been able to do this when I export using Quicktime Conversion at 640x480 with the "letterbox to preserve aspect ratio" option checked. However, I just did exactly that but when it is exported the video looks stretched and distorted and no letterbox bars appear on it. I've tried switching from H.264 to m-peg4 converter to see if that would make a difference but it is still exporting stretched videos. Why has this suddenly changed, and are there any fixes you know about?
Thanks!
Andrew

Try creating a new Project with the Sequence settings matching the footage correctly. Then copy/paste the the incorrect Sequence into the new matching Sequence.

  • CS6, long exports even when pre-rendered

Admittedly I'm a bit new to Premiere.  And I'm hoping there is some novice aspects to how the sequence is setup and what settings are chosen on export.
The problem I'm having is that even after I've already rendered all the effects in my edit, can watch it at full quality in real time playback, when I export it takes as long as it did to render the sequences in the first place... if not longer.  For example a 8 minute video is looking at 1.4 to 2 hours for an export with "Match Sequence Settings" checked.  And yes I did try "use previews" as well.
My confusion is that, doing this same task in FCP takes seconds. I've worked in ProRes422 and exported ProRes422 in maybe 10 seconds for a 5 minute edit.
Here... I'm assuming that my sequnce settings aren't quite right somewhere.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

My source footage is usually 1920x1080i ProRes HQ. Then I usually export to 1920x1080i mpeg-2. My sequence settings are generally always 1920x1080i I always leave my preview codec set to the default since I never use the "use previews" option. Generally I always just use the standard mpeg-2 i-frame only preview option since I don't mind if my preview is lossless or not since I don't ever use the "use preview" option.
Basically what I was trying to point out was that you where saying here that it would take hours to export a 30min program.
As an example if you have a 30 minute edit, and need to change a lower 3rd, and export out the change, it would take hours because the export would be re-rendering every graphic and effect for the entire show.... ever, single time.
So I was wondering what type of specs your system had if it takes it hours to export a 30 minute program. Generally speaking I almost always export to mpeg-2 because that's what our play-server in at our station supports. Unless it's a promo or HQ master copy of something that needs to be archived.
Also to answer your last question I never check the sequence settings option since I prefer to select all my options on my own because I have customized presets anyways.
If you'd like I will test the "use previews option" but quite honestly I don't usually ever need to render my timeline to preview stuff unless I try to do animations inside Premiere. My stuff always just plays in real-time. I do however agree that if you take the time to render your stuff in the timeline it SHOULD export faster so I'm not really sure why you're experincing such long wait times, but I did just want to point out that for me my timelines always export much faster than a few hours.
Also are you talking about using FCP7 or FCP X? Because the few times I used FCP7 on my friends Macbook pro it was terrible I had to render everytime I changed a single key-frame. It kept saying "warning dropped frames" It was a terrible experince. So basically I was stuck having to render something over and over and over. But when using Premiere I don't have to render very often unless I'm trying to animate something or work on something with really heavy CC, scaling, effects etc.

  • Photos copies photos when importing even when told not to copy photos when importing?

The new Photos app is pretty cool.
The one thing I didn't like about iPhotos is still present here:  Rather than handling my photos in the Finder it creates a weird database full of all the photos -- and the only way to get to them is via this one app.  I guess maybe we'll have a solution for that in the future.
But I have stumbled across something that may be a deal breaker for me:  Even when set to not COPY imported photos, it turns out the Photos copies imported photos.
In preferences:  GENERAL -> IMPORTING you can choose whether to Copy Items To The Photo Library.
Well, I don't want to do that.  I have 8G of photos on my drive, and relatively little space, and the last thing I need to do is use double the space!  So I chose not to copy items when importing.
I come back a couple hours later.  And guess what?  My Photos app/library is 8G in size!  Photos has copied all my photos when importing.   So now I have two copies of all my photos on my hard drive, and I am running out of space.
Is there a way to make that setting, to not copy photos when importing, work?

    Hi,
Thanks for the idea.  Here is what I found:
The "Masters" folder is very small.  300MB.
The "Previews" folder is a similar size.
    "Thumbnails" are under 1G.
It's the "Resources" folder that is many gigs in size.
Very interesting.  So in a sense, it could be even worse!
That is, apparently the setting prevented the "Masters" folder from getting 8 gig of photos copied into it.
But even so, "Resources" ended up with 6.5G in it -- even though no files were copied!
    Wild.
Other photo management apps (e.g., Lightroom) have sort of a 10% overhead, not a 90% overhead -- i.e., close to the same size as the actual photos themselves.
I should probably start a fresh question, now that you have solved half the mystery:  Yes, the actual photos were not imported into Masters, but Resources gets really big!

  • Stretched export even when "Match Sequence Settings" is checked

I've been stumped by an export problem I've never faced before. I'm reediting the audio of the Rocky Horror Picture Show movie, so I began this project with a sequence based on the settings of the mp4 file of that movie. I edited it and exported it with "Match Sequence Settings" checked, but the final is horizontally stretched. Here are some screenshots.
    Sequence Settings
Export Settings (the source and output previews match!!)
    Original Movie
    New Export, Weirdly Stretched
Any thoughts? The sequence settings of my edit are based on the original movie, so I can't understand how the final output could be different. What am I missing?
Also this is in CC 2014.

    Hi Ttraversy,
It may have to do with non-square pixels, however, I'm not sure you should be editing with other people's source material. I highly recommend you avoid doing so to avoid legal problems.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • Can't get flash video to stop looping even when i use stop(); in last frame

I have only just started using Flash so im sure im doing this wrong but in tutorials i have watched to stop the video looping you put stop(); in the last frame. I have done that but the video still loops... Anyone know where i am going wrong?

If the question is related to Adobe Presenter, I would recommend associating the SWF with the presentation play bar. This will allow the player to control the playback of the SWF and can move on to the next slide when the amount of silence (ideally equal to the duration of the SWF) has passed.
If this is a question related to Flash, I'll move it to the correct forum.

  • Flickery playback and export even when source footage is not flickery

when premiere plays certain clips back it looks flickery
these clips are not flickery to begin with,  but they become flickery when part of a premiere project, there seems to be no rhyme nor reason for it
any ideas how i can solve it?

there is no dialogue box coming up for me .....
I choose 'add premiere pro sequence'  , it just says it is loading, a little yellow bar loads from left to right,  then nothing.   i can see a greyed out text belown stating "sequence not available" and what appears to be a tick box beside it, but i dont know what it refers to or how i shall correct that if it actually means the sequence is not avaIable.  I have , to the best of my knowedge, created a sequence within premiere by choosing the option "render in out"  , i dont know what else im supposed to do.

  • Scoll Lagging FF7.0.1: fine in safe mode, continues to lag when not even when extensions and plug-ins are disabled (reinstalled, problem continues)

a few days ago, all web pages started to lag when scrolling. Tried safe mode and speed was restored. returned to normal mode and disabled all plug-ins and extension, however, there was no effect upon the scroll lagging. performed a complete Kaspersky virus check with no issues. Other programs on desktop (ex: outlook) are running concurrently at speed without issue. IE is not running with scroll lag.
Oh, BTW, I don't know if it is related, but I was in China last week. and Only noticed this scroll lagging here in the US when I opened it this morning ... so, perhaps there is a site preference issue?

If it boots OK in Safe Mode, the you want to check those possible causes outlined in this article.

  • Aperture now always constrains when cropping, even when it says "Do not constrain".  How can I fix this?

I cannot drag the crop area beyond a certain size.  It's driving me crazy -- it did not used to do that!
    Thanks!

Is your Aperture version the latest version 3.4.5? If not, try to update. There have been a few bugfixes in the lates releases.
Also try, if you can create a a taller cropping rectangle on a different image and lift and stamp it onto your problematic image version.
If you cannot set the crop correctly at all, your Aperture library may need repairing or your preferences file may be corrupted.
To check if the library is the problem, export the original image and import it into a different Aperture library. Can you crop it there correctly? If yes, then repair your Aperture library. If not, remove your preferences file from your user library.
Both are explained in this document: Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics

  • Pictures all grey toned when exported from Lightroom 4.

They look great in Lightroom and then look/print grey toned when exported, even photos that have not been edited.  Fix?

Can't think of any ICC profile LR would allow that would produce a grayscale appearing document. Wondering if it's another of those 'corrupted' display profile issues where a grayscale treatment is being applied to the images but in LR it isn't showing? This IS a strange one.
What if in the Print Module you Save as JPEG, Gray?

  • Keep Red Filename when exporting to QT

I have a lot of Red Footage which I need to trim/color correct in FCP. I use log and transfer window to ingest the footage and then Export > Quick Time to 1080p.
The problem is, I have to maintain the original filename for future reference.
Is there a way to keep the original file name when exporting?
When I export, it ask me for the file name as "save as" and it puts "Sequence 1" by default in. Is there any way to override that and put the original file name in?

Yes, thank you, I know about the voodoo to get things out to Compressor. Must be a sequence in the main sequence folder in the bin to work voodoo thing.
I think my problems are systemic as now compressor will not launch. I have been having nothing but problems since I installed 10.4.10. First all my Office programs would not launch then I actually installed OS 10.4.10 several times rebuilding my system by archive and installing 10.4.8 and then using the combo installer from there. I thought I had a stable system but I guess I will have to revert to 10.4.9 or reinstall compressor or Quick Time or FCP Studio or.......ARRGGHHHH?
I though that the dialog was amusing in the extreem! It wasn't "Sequence has no media" it was:
"No Movie in File" Of course there isn't any movie in the file you didn't put the movie into a file....sheesh. Anyway I'll post again.

  • Rate Stretch audio goes out of sync when exported.

Audio, which is rate stretched using the rate stretch tool to 100.01%, plays fine in Premiere Pro CS6. However, when exported to Encore or to MPEG-2 file, the audio is no longer stretched and becomes out of sync by the end of the video. When I play the preview in Encore, the audio is out of sync. Switch back to Premiere, it is OK. Export a MPEG-2 file and author a DVD, the audio is out of sync. Go back to Premiere, it is OK. I record the audio using a TASCAM portable recorder. I have recorded and synched audio many times and this is the first time that it does not work, on two separate Premiere projects. Any ideas on how to fix this. Even better, is there a way to record audio so that it matches the video (from a Panasonic HD AVCHD camcorder) without requiring rate stretch adjustment?

Try changing the speed with right click, Speed/Duration instead of using the Rate Stretch tool.

  • When exporting video from Premiere Pro?

When exporting a video from Premiere Pro it makes a .m4v file instead of .mp4, even though it saids in the Premiere Pro that it will make a mp4 file - and I can't use them afterwards. It has been there after I have updated last time.

Also, make sure that you check the box marked "Export Audio" if you want a MP4 extension.

  • Problem when exporting movie, video stops after 2 minutes

I set up a Project containing both images and videos. They were all shot using a digital camera (Canon SD400).
When I export the 5 minute movie, around 2 minutes the video freezes, but the music (from an mp3 file) keeps playing. At 2 minutes one of the videos start to play and the video has a little yellow button showing on it in the timeline. None of the other videos have this little yellow button, although I am not convinced that this is the one causing the problem. Here is an image of it:
    http://dombovari.com/stuff/imovie.png
Any ideas why the video playback would stop when I export it? It plays fine in iMovie when I preview the project, but when exporting, the video playback stops.
    Thanks!

I have this very same problem. All 640x480 clips shot with a Canon SD550. iMovie 5 will play back everything fine in iMovie, but once I export the file using H.264 or MPEG-4, the video stops after about 30 seconds (of the 3 and half minutes of the video). The music still plays, but the video has not exported properly (and it shows in the file size).
What WILL work is if you export it to web, but I can't use that. I need it exported at its full quality. (Also will not work, by the way.) But, again, it plays in iMovie just fine. I even tried exporting from the timeline file (with the reference media files) in the iMovie file package—but I get the exact same results.
Quite frustrating considering it works in iMovie just fine. Any other ideas, folks?

  • When exporting separate audio and video streams, the audio drifts out of sync

So this is my first slightly larger project in Final Cut Pro X.
When I export my finished project (around 12 minutes long) straight to quicktime, it plays back perfectly.
When I export using compressor, the resulting audio and video streams are two different lengths. The audio comes out a full second longer. If you try to lay them down in a program like Adobe Encore, the audio starts out perfectly in sync. Two minutes in you notice the video is slightly out of sync with the audio. By the end of the video it's comically bad, over a second out of sync.
What's even more vexing is if I try to take the quicktime file that IS in sync upon playback, and try to convert it burn that to a dvd or blu-ray using toast, the problem re-emerges.
I triec searching around, but most of the suggestions that came up were vauge, like, "Upgrade to a real program like Final Cut." (This was in reply to people who were using free software programs.)
I did see one idea surface where 44 and 48 kHz sampling rates don't play well together. So I combed through my project and found all the 44.1 songs that were used, and swapped them out with upsampled versions. Nothing changed. It didn't sound like it would fix it, as people usually said it was a specific amount of frames off, not something drifting out of sync.
So the question is, does anyone have any suggestions on what could be causing this? Thanks! :-)

Project settings can be accessed and changed by selecting the project and pressing command-J. Then, in the inspector, click on the little gear in the lower-right hand corner to access the settings.
Why are you trying to output video/audio separately? If the content plays in-sync when exporting a quicktime movie (using current project settings), you could try separating the video/audio using MPEG Streamclip as a second step instead of using compressor. For audio, don't change the sample rate from the project settings, and use uncompressed audio (AIFF) as the output format.
